This is the atom gold shell Elliot Johnson about 50 minutes talk with baseball so the story like that actually texted Elliott about it Josh Donaldson, Yankees third baseman who in a snide way called to Manderson White Sox shortstop Jackie he's upset because his teammates didn't back him. We noted this immediately when we talked to Doug led the last week that the all you needed to know the manager in the face of the Yankees. Maybe the face of baseball Aaron judge both said that should reset it and moved on. Don't say don't be a jerk.

Essentially what they said about Josh Donaldson yell if you want to jerk. Maybe this is the problem, will talk to Ellie Johnson about a number of things in just a little bit, but we have though is a bunch things you need to hear.

In case you haven't heard them. It's the wall sent the wall of sound is a function of this there is no doubt starting the MBA. We have the NBA finals that start tonight. If you are in Raleigh. Listening to this program you can muster right here on which is which is very good so I will start with the head coach of the Boston Celtics. Email Duncan on how to use Golden State defendant.

Rather, how does Boston defend Golden State we do have the size and versatility of the wings are pinko, ill with who we are defensively is a really good offense and team the benefit of having Marcus and Jason Jerilyn on the perimeter, but as well you have big sufficient to speak on our grant. Nobody else that we use is that of a perfect storm. As far as the mass of all office don't have the defensive tone we have bigger size and versatility bodes well for as far as that so confident with a lot of guys guarding different players for them. I don't think you made Duke is necessarily wrong. There I said before this series started the assumption was that it's it's like a coronation for Golden State and I think they'll win the series but I don't see this as a coronation at all at all. I do find you know who's going to guard Jason Tatum. My guess is it will be Andrew Wiggins first, it will be his assignment, I think, dream on green will spend some time guarding Jason Tatum, Clay Thompson will probably get the assignment first on Jaelyn Brown but I mean this is Steph Curry get a guard Marcus Mark that's a big body for Steph Curry to deal with for the entire series of physical clerk Jordan pool's not a big guy either so there there are going to be some matchup issues that work against Golden State, but I think Golden State is the better team and they also have a lot of different ways to look like they can play big, and I do think it is that we talk to Donna about this on Tuesday. I do think a lot of it is about what does Boston get out of Robert Williams defensive right now to Jason Tatum, the Celtic star first time after couple cracks get the NBA finals follows is big accomplishment so that we should be proud of it were super excited for the fruit salad. Obviously, Ozment goes when the bishops so long test.

Yes, you do and I'm not going to like there are people who would listen to that, well, they're just happy to get there. I don't think so. I think like once the series starts you just start over. They are not on they are not overwhelming underdogs if you will alright so last night in Cincinnati the US men's national soccer team beat Morocco three nil. I know how people process this well it's just Morocco that Morocco is a top 25 fee 15.

They have already qualified for the World Cup.

They have lost. If John champion Taylor 12 and were correct on ESPN. I have no reason to believe that they weren't.

I believe they only lost once in the last 34 batches so they they were undefeated in qualifying. Now that being that's just not easy.

They were undefeated and qualified. So last night the United States wins three nil Christian full of sick was instrumental in it. I thought he was great in the first half. He came off early in the second thought he was great in the first half. He set up the first goal super first touch that pastor Brandon Aronson, but after the game he was put off by something and here is, for whatever reason I'm not happy with the amount of Americans thereafter. That work done. But once again, okay or should the listener to get a shot of the American fan. I don't know what the attendance was last night. I tried finding earlier MLS Stadium, which seats about 20,000. So what like they played in Charlotte where you get 70 or anything like that or Denver where you could get 50 or so. Thousands of roughly 20,000 fans were in attendance at the 26,000 seat stadium.

Okay, so they didn't even sell out the 26,000 hot like Cincinnati go like that Morocco's not good. Morocco is good, but it makes me there just playing ghetto Italy plate Mexico well Mexico would've been private bear stadium. It would not be a friendly either. No, plus the hope is that, though probably run into Mexico at some point during the summer we have nation's legal right that might not be really decided until next I don't know what the what the schedule is for that there are tradition leagues nations league matches coming up in the next couple weeks, so our Grenada is one and I believe at El Salvador is the other so they got much better. They play Uruguay in Kansas City on Sunday, so maybe that'll be but I was interesting. Implicit taken a shot at US fans.

Alright Ron Rivera is the head coach of the Washington commandos. Their new quarterback is Carson Wentz and Ron is wildly may be delusional.

He optimistic the something that Carson does not know a lot of the quarterbacks can do with his arm strength visibility for the boss. Specifically, vertically you do are expected to step do I expect us to be able to really expand on what was done in the past. This is for sure, with Carson to be one do think we can develop and grow as a group together offense of defense or specialty, but to me it really does come down is sometimes I need to hear that again because honestly, he didn't say anything. The something that Carson does not know a lot of the quarterbacks can do through with his arm strength is the boss. Specifically, vertically, I just his gobbledygook. Nothing he could throw the ball vertically. Yes, yes it away. Take Michelle Taylor how to get there. But Carson Wentz is not is not good.

Good luck good luck commandos. Good luck commandos all right. Finally, we talked to Rod Brind'Amour earlier in one of the players. I asked him about was Tony D'Angelo.

Here's D'Angelo from his exit interview yesterday. By the way, to be on the show tomorrow.

D'Angelo on basically the way he was made to feel by the hurricanes last summer mean there is a lot of options that you know we thought we had were supposed to have a sense that that didn't come to fruition. As time went on there and then you come to Carolina and it was with open arms. Basically we had good conversations from talking to with ownership to coaches that management and I felt like they were going to be a listen to me.

They do not they trusted me and took me in his kind with no transient word on using the collar on you basically can't let you do your thing then you know I earn the trust display again was no they gave you do or say any little thing or you're out or whatever anything like that.

I thought I came in and just myself from the guys myself on team management displayed and play my game. I thought that it translated into in the positive thing for the team and myself so that's probably how I say on the ice incense fry could use better wording, but that I'm a little guy. I told never to beginning I said yes. You guys are good to me you again and now you I'm very loyal so we were able to do something Robert Moore also was was excited by what Tony brought to the team this year.

I hope it works out.

I do think it was very interesting and whether people caught this or not in the handshake line. After the series to all the players that Tony was teammates with four couple years Crider's advantage.

Add and Fox even keel Andre Miller are to be Piner and there was consistently a pretty warm embrace. So for the people who thought that Tony didn't get along with teammates is just not the case. Tony got along great with teammates. He was well-liked in this locker room and he was a really good teammate is a really smart player. I don't know how it's gonna work out.

I don't know if it's going to work out or not I know what Tony wants.

What I can ask him what he wants to borrow but I think the hurricanes were a very good team and a lot of that had to do with what Tony D'Angelo brought to the to the team to locker and on the ice, hopefully to work at next year will make it back Elliott Johnson, former durables*Atlanta Braves and others will talk to about baseball, about fantasy football slap fights and more. Next studio in my man Coach Pete through the capital financial advisory group were talking retirement coach. I'm a simple guy but I like colors. Tell me how I can colorcode money and get ready for retirement. I like colors to grass I don't like just buzzwords what we try to do is we try to break down all those words on your statement. All those numbers into three colors red, green, yellow people amazingly come in and most of the money is in the red getting that I want that I read means high horsepower potential is high loss potential. It's a give-and-take you can want to do that or that yellow means liquid money and get anytime stuck on anything green.

If you safe growth but also gives lifetime income as we get closer to retirement. We need some green accounts with greens only: back that result was important for you to next and people out of the thousand dollar value going to put together for you very own total planned as a green zone it's a traffic light. I hope it's green for you 800-661-7383 or text Adam to 21000B through massive 16 in a row. Not just because the Mets won six in a row, but I'm in a good mood because we get the baseball Elliott Johnson durables legend Tampa Bay Ray, Atlanta Braves, Kansas City Royals and Cleveland Guardian you have any of your Cleveland Guardian gear.

I don't have any Cleveland Guardian. They chose they chose a poor name. They think they really did what.

What's worse, the guardians or the commanders who yeah I really don't mind Guardian often considered it okay? I'm not realizing that it was already trademarked by the roller derby team yet is just terrible. It was all it was all bad. I want to sell the same to Josh Donaldson stuff, and the fantasy football slap light stuff for the end of this if we have time, I do. I do want your your thoughts on those two things, but pretty big series tonight. That's opening up between the Mets and the Dodgers and the Mets have somehow got on like a +77 run differential. Jacob grabbed his throat zero innings back shares or is out until after the All-Star break.

What how are they putting this together is is is is simply a reflection of Buck Showalter. Certainly, part of the alto that they have ownership but actually want to win and willing to write an extraordinary upper or ordinary upper going wrong, which is making much money as possible. And you know you went secondarily. But no: got all the money you care about that when and clearly being reflected in not only playing but the depth that they have as well and make down Dominic you out there haven't been darkling greater court and then I got your me. Yeah, he's been around you armies been around for a couple years he's spent some time in the minor leagues got a big beard is kind of looks like you might not be in great shape fire right now they're doing.

They're doing things the right way they got yelled or not. They're not afraid to make wise when the trade deadline comes around, you know, and you got a really respect what they're doing over there Showalter was exactly the right way to write person on this for a long time. You know how to do it, but I've been pretty impressed with how to perform not only that, but if the point of the other great Don really really like always. It seemed like a great many things like that really dried yet they got a long way to go metal seems like you had a great night day, but that go in the back switch your art aren't even trying to win the Elliott Johnson is joining us here on the gold show.

I look at the Braves as last year. They were basically this until we got to like August Ronald Kuhn yeah missed the first 130 games of the season.

It's going to take him some time to get fully back and we now good is what I think the Braves they might've put themselves too far behind, but I think there to make a run at a playoff spot.

Not really that concerned about them.

I think you're right about the Phillies. The Dodgers go have the best record. I believe in baseball and what +112 run differential, but they just got swept by the Pirates. How does that baseball Craig great game in hybrid pirates are kind of in Madland, you know the right. What right around 500. The ability to conduct Madland I find that bill. Haven't really hit their stride. Maybe a little bit of a hangover from the World Series.

I'm getting back to you can help their offenses fine. You know I love you. I can pay healthy pitching like dumbstruck, but the other dog came to the credit agreement right and it will probably add another bat. That sounds when the trade deadline comes around. Not at all ask about Aaron Judge. It came during a time in the like. The Braves had done the Freddie basically walked away from Freddie Freeman, Matt Olson signs and remember you what I had this conversation about Olson accepted less money, which I'm sure it didn't go unnoticed around big-league clubhouses where you get a player who could demand a higher wage and it doesn't sit well with other players, but Aaron Judge did the opposite. He turned down $30 million annually for I think eight years from the Yankees might've even been 31 million, because he thinks he could get the Mike Trout contract, which is closer to 36. It looks like it looks like he was right. What you just your thoughts about Aaron. Judge did and the fact that he had at least at this point seems to be pulling it off a lot a lot of comp to walk away from 200+ million dollars so obviously he feels like he's work more willing to risk it. Yankees are doing. I understand it, but at the same time I can all but guarantee you that they're raising that offer quietly held down my love you hundred hundred percent better 93% better than the average where I don't think anybody is going to get MVP about the.bmp P All-Star Yankees go to World Series you know and they win and hopefully they don't expect the whales break our Yankee fan.

But hopefully they don't win and somebody else.

But even if they do, I mean gosh back of the truck to get everything you want and then some. Because you and I both know that: knocking and once we have a bidding war great Yankees worst nightmare is that Steve Cohen has unlimited money and he doesn't care if his payroll next year like he's already accepted that the new collective bargaining agreement has a Steve Cohen threshold like he's referred to it as is dog.

I guess that's about me okay just laughs that he doesn't care. Yeah, but I think you can mind the work about billion-dollar Yankee camp before they're just choosing not they have they have just as much money they have every opportunity and ability to pay him anything that he wants later chose to do it this way, the weight of the business work you're trying to acquire the least amount that you possibly can, and I appreciate the way they went about it but it didn't go their way.

They thought you would hold that God would buckle and that you would come to them and you chose the bet on Dalton and rightfully so, now, and your cheer point their worst nightmare because just like with masters or phone basically said whatever you did all good one dollar if you want to go after the top dollar or if you want to Yankee uniform and potentially have that, you know, maybe it maybe at some point will he's in the best possible situation. I let me ask you about a teammate of his and Aaron. Judge was no friend to publicly to Josh Donaldson after the snide Jackie remark he made to Tim Anderson because I said I read the story yesterday that Josh was upset that his teammates and his manager did not publicly defend him maybe. Don't be a jerk. Is that good enough and why didn't you I don't get it. Commanders and obviously are not ran, you can't drop it, you can't drop Jackie on him unless your you're really really close with the guy and even then like you anyway I got don't think that it was anything they should be done. He backed off, apologizing to the bone… Now you just making it worse. So I just don't get it.

I do not understand, but you know he's chosen to take the tactile think of the right right way at all and yet I think the guy said this Doug Linda last week.

All you needed to know was that his manager, and is the signature player on the team didn't back him up like at that point, tail between your legs.

Mercy of the court. The whole thing. My mistake move on Buddy as he has chosen to go. I don't. I can't believe my teammates and back me up right now. We also have the slap heard round major-league baseball.

I didn't even see the slap. I don't care about the slap but Tommy Pham slapped Jock Peterson because there was a fantasy football league gone awry what it was or anything about the story that made you laugh or was that everything about the story made you laugh, so I've been doing baseball team names like don't don't let my jockstrap and I've been trying to come up with that I think are fairly clever right of the bright come up with.

I'd welcome everyone to send me your the yellow Tommy Pham and Jock Peterson, joke team name would be great but I need basically to get competitive. I don't care who you are the leader out better about the world at what they do and they don't take kindly to disrespect them topically, he felt disrespected out on Jock losing $111,000 budget.

I logged so I don't know Doc felt like he was okay with you and Tommy didn't feel like there were close enough for him to save thing Danny took a personal matter what it is about gambling. According to Jock Peterson. I said that I will interview the clubhouse like there was. He said there was a lot of money involved so that when when when guys are guys are gambling on fantasy football and that's what it is. There's a lot of involvement in series, but this is laugh about the money and it's more just about about being respected or disrespected about point.

But I gave the money. The money matter to a point. But that's just so that everything I say engage, but overall you obviously did something something made him feel really uncomfortable. Whatever it was mother with the meme about the daughters doing well orally.

I'm not exactly sure the whole story because I didn't hear from you. God yet but obviously you know he felt like it was deserving of flapping what happened. My trout might or might not be the commissioner of that fantasy football league going forward. He did say that commissioners always get booed. I final thing for Elliott Johnson in a spring training situation. Was there ever a bracket pool that got out of hand. Of course, of course accumulate for like there's something about light. They're all in everything pretty impressive, and then you guys something of an afterthought writer something I played for where it was like the person you talked about when he got there and laughing. He talked about before he left because the guys were so intent on learning every other thing that they could fit into as much as possible and finding a way to try and beat everybody out.

Most competitive government in their competition junkie.

You know about and outwit, outsmart, outdate out beat everybody whatever the dream there's deftly clubhouse that are all in all not stop and it really depends on the staff and the players. Of course a little bit to the trainers. Believe it or not. Of the guys are really working on a lot of anger onto the more the merrier, as far as I'm concerned because Jackie helped engage a lot of more team morale and camaraderie. That's exactly what I was going to use.

It's about camaraderie. Elliott Johnson like like we have we have great camaraderie on this program. I appreciate the time will talk together is you got Elliott just I haven't seen name fantasy team. I will your interview is finding a job, you can protecting the Pham all very nice, very nice, just text that the Elliott will appreciate that when we return a former Tar Heel former Virginia Cavalier TJ Thorpe is now doing some work for high school OT.com.

He's got a podcast out and it's really about the high school football experience and getting the most out of it.

I think it's fascinating. Will talk to TJ Thorpe about next June 19, 2006, but it all started May 6, 1997 with the announcement that the Hartford whalers were coming to North Carolina transition of heartbreak.

Figuring it out on the fly became 25th anniversary of the Carolina listen to TJ for if I did a Google search for TJ Thorpe and I bring up two pages one says Virginia Cavalier's official athletic site. The other says University of North Carolina official athletic site. There can't possibly be to TJ Thorpe's are you are you are you UVA TJ or are you UNC TJ man, a mercenary, I love it.

Now in high school. OT is going to be one of their analyst during the football season, but also has the TJ Thorpe show that we are going to discuss here. I want to start here, and maybe it was easier that you left UNC went to UVA to have a Duke Gion Anthony Boone on your first show.

You will didn't go that route, but were trying to highlight big athletes first happen to be in Charlotte but I got Greg and quarterback.

We go you so what work that I think it worked. I got what you got all worked out loud to Jade, what did money changing what happened when you got somebody you know about, you know, that's totally totally understand it. Give me some background on what you're trying to do with the show I watched part of the first episode which is now available in high school OT.com or wherever you get your podcast to those of us who have podcast understand that phrase you get podcast anywhere. This is, I think this is going to be great and I know Anthony Boone wasn't the only guessable that you talk about the show, and in general but what is your goal with the TJ Thorpe show. One other note also watch it on your toes. That's right.

We tried everything possible to show is on WR L sports plus will you get what my angle is to highlight you know one top top prospects throughout North Carolina not Raleigh and Charlotte, but I want to go. Every mountain rule area. Whatever we got to find the best athletes in the guys who are doing it right right you want to do it on what so laugh when I condo almost pulled my growing a little bit working out with the high school probably Passes and maybe go to Blondie you know we've got to come out there so you can pick talked with the big thing to take it all so on the backend with alumni athlete that football is the finite period of time in the lot so much more applicable and that will want to highlight guys who are great examples of doing it the right way and continue to do it right.

What about this outbound whatever kind TJ Thorpe filling left in the low. It's interesting that we have high profile football players come from all reaches of the state. You don't have to be.

We have Julius peppers from Rutherfordton was, I think it was Rutherfordton. You've got my Keith Schuller was out the mountains in Asheville. My friend Dante Williams from from Jacksonville go so yeah ball ball look at it with intricate is one of the best people I know that. So what we've always called in the unofficial mayor of Jacksonville, and I know is going back there, may I haven't spoken to him a little bit while but it was back there, you know, working with kids out there to so is high school football school sports in general because this probably is the same for other sports but I would just keep at the football high school football change and gotten better across the state. You think I figured obviously like that across all sport football.

I think you see that the blueprint is more laid out being able to access certain resources, the better your day more athletes now given whether social media come before them now.

Come back like myself and others who try to get back but I think that the biggest kid being able to build their own bright and that kinda goes in an IL portion when you when it's about you grant to sport but when you're own brand you're less likely to put your more likely to build it up and to invest in it and to pour all your drive and grind into that. So I can work hard and then when you have low platforms like this it's going to be rewarded little on keep your interview more merger wherever that looks like the right thing and excelling in your sport so that's probably why athletes are starting to block TJ Thorpe is joining us as a as a kid who stayed local ghetto for a time anyway. What was what is cool about no or what what would be available in terms of name, image and likeness. Hello, where are these kids. I know you talk to one of the best wide receivers in the state. Hello, where are they in terms of what is available to them and why it might be more attractive to say home. I think there extremely aware so when you you have your okay for one of the kids high school probably do a story on him from point about Oklahoma right on, but I know better. I heard that Oklahoma given every scholarship at athlete $50,000 per school year right I'll get you know what I think but also a kid like Sam how like granite Charlotte to Raleigh but the Bojangles want to go eat lunch group like that, that's so crazy you think that you can put your family in a better situation or yourself in relation at a younger age craving a lot of granite right now it's more for the then I think a retirement fund like that all my pocket little bit now doing what I love doing that but I think that's great.

I think the kids to leverage their hometown, where you have a bigger following what that will allow all I would definitely try to reach out to pizza flag on both his actually talked about this for a number years and TJ is joining as his check at the TJ thought show high school OT.com wherever you podcast or watch it on WR L sports plus on your television as you can as you watching this show now if you if you are, but a number years ago. You know when we were talking about, you know, the idea this was just in the formative stages. The idea of allowing an athlete while in college. To realize the value of his name near the end IL thing and I thought you were probably already gone from UNC.

At this point, but a guy like Marcus. Page point guard as as a sophomore, like he was already like this incredible spokesman for the program super kid great student, but you could heat his value was never going to be higher because he wasn't a guy that was get to play in the NBA but his value was never going to be higher than it was as a sophomore or junior to senior and he wasn't allowed at that point to me that was a missed opportunity, not just for Marcus page but also for the sport like now to for further through the college sports industry.

Those kids should be highlighted and they deserve something from my wrong not I agree with you, cut on one of the fun.

Every year, what happened to market equipment in the first part rightly click market. Marcus paid don't need the money spent in class. We had a class together and what classes we got up around the town. Number number five but again like how much money did the school.

The school might how much money do like Michael Jordan may count all people and making money without the people who, and that you like and and had he been able to now. Kobe Kobe was called white Kobe.

When Joe got all great players, but it takes away from what you cannot. Nine limelight when he couldn't note, took advantage of his name and likeness like your fact, I think that that you got that you want one unit when it got close your household mean he's a celebrity should be at least in some form of structure I know they tried to work football. I know I received the name and likeness. Check for like the videogame right back out 14 do you remember to even tell us. Could you remember the total of that check.

Eight.

Not bad, but when I got no longer play football and and not only that I would impact player on the deck so anybody know about you, though I would assume an impact player should get more money but how many copies of the game will how many global and to think that only $8000 went to one applet, but I doubt it. You know, one of those things where you figure out what glad they got it right. Now it's time to move in the right direction.

Hopefully little water down high school OT.com podcast River. You get the TJ thought show. I appreciate your time. Let's do it again.

We could talk high school football. We can talk all we could talk. We talk Saskatchewan Roughriders did you play with. There for a long time. He was a star know when I got to start with Montréal. Okay go up late again really cool*but also with the blue bomber great cook to CFL next time appreciate TJ best of luck to you and will talk soon. Good to good nice to catch up and talk to TJ Thorpe a lot and I may have this wrong is he the next guest on culture stay pocket. He is not our next guest is actually Grant Hill oh yeah, TJ will be coming up probably later on this month. Yes, all Grant Hill on the culture stay pocket that's right.

That's is big time it is pretty.

That's just enormous. Absolutely enormous good for you so I will look forward to the to a future episode of culture, state, and a longer conversation with TJ Thorpe so you know it's funny. I didn't remember that he had finished his college career at Virginia.

I honestly did not remember. I it was just a fun player that UNC could do everything like Depot Samuel before depot. Samuel was the person, but cool that somebody like him and I know you and Anthony Boone on these guys who mentor high school athletes high school athletes there smarter than they've ever been. As you become more aware of your surroundings. You be you. Your you're just able to handle a lot more but there is so much more being thrown at them like it's hard to keep up. So not the high school athlete who wants to play in college or consider a pro career they need may be more guidance than they've ever needed right so there are so many more things available to them. Now were seeing and IL being available to high school kids, which again whatever this get it while you can get it yeah gosh, I'm were you ever Dennis, were you ever that guy. We were the best player on your team and in a sport or one of the best players on the team in your sport was lacrosse and football but most of the cross, opposition to play football on offense, high school or college. I play for a year in college as a linebacker in college defensively.

I played everywhere on the front seven okay versatile I was. Jeremy Chin anyway yeah I do not like I was not that fast crosswise, I was one of our top layers of defense where your long stick, I was good for you is your question about lacrosse is in a bucket ask anything about a long stick.

Why is it okay to just repeatedly whack your opponent with a stick.

We have Bill take the ball away so I just smack you in the in the arm and the shoulder with a stick. He had to keep within reason yet to be on the hands or on the stick and I want yet you can't wind up we can't generally wind up like a baseball bat and just how well not that they are okay. What hell is going to take the ball from you because it was like what you want to stick with the stick out of the way. That's why you defending that that kind of a hater. I've taken plenty of wax on my hips. Oh yeah, it's all accepted that bad stuff from honestly, it's among the toughest games to play.

I think lacrosse is that's no joke is crosschecking subs like hockey really, except you can plant your feet is real and states. Gosh, it is that is rough I love. I love outdoor lacrosse like a but it's not like the game hasn't grown and we have a lot more schools playing you major college lacrosse that we used to, but just I thought it would be bigger than it is right now, but maybe there still are still that growth.

How long did we wait for soccer catch on right time right I think were here think were here were soccer is becoming a major US port lacrosse is next.

This is the gold shell June 19, 2000 May 6, 1997 with the announcement that the Hartford coming to North Carolina transition of heartbreak. Figuring it out on the fly came fifth anniversary of the Carolina listen
