We dig into what that means and why it matters for everyday Christian living, not as performative niceness, but as the gospel made visible through action. The aim isn’t to trade doctrine for activism, it’s to let good doctrine become a life of application that benefits real people in practical ways. We talk about the mindset shift from random acts of kindness to intentional, thoughtful service, and we break down a three-part formula that sticks: intentionality plus creativity plus initiative. That kind of person shows up early, stays late, takes the distasteful chore, and quietly makes life better for everyone around them. We also get uncomfortably practical about the local church: if any place should be overflowing with volunteers, generosity, and “ready for every good deed” energy, it’s the household of faith. Then we widen the lens to culture and history. Jesus In Judgement Mode: Awake or Asleep? | Until He Comes If you asked Asian Christians their opinion of the Sardis church in AD 95, they would likely say it was a lively, fruitful church. But Jesus thought otherwise. He said it was "dead!" (Rev. 3:3). Would we like Judge Jesus to assess our church as "dead"? Why was the Holy Spirit not flowing in Sardis? Whatever it was, it was sin – disobedience to the known will of God - that cut off the flow of the living Spirit from the living Word in heaven. Perhaps they were not: seeking God privately, studying His Word hungrily, practicing self-examination, faithful in service, or serious about His return. Jesus commended the faithful remnant in Sardis but not the rest. They received not a sweet blessing but a stern warning: repent, or I will come as a "Thief in the night" (3:4), and you will not be ready! Interpretation? They will miss the rapture! (No surprise, this is one of five references or allusions to Christ's appearing or the Tribulation period in Revelation 2 or 3: 2:22; 2:25-27; 3:3; 3:4; 3:10.) Are our churches alive or dead. If dead, why?
