Have financial advisory capital financial USA.com. This is the Adam gold shell three is the most is that I say that a man you want to say what he delivered and certified as part of the question hundred miles an hour action with location you're listening to the show on the North Carolina sports network welcome to the show where in Charlotte, North Carolina in the Promenade of the Westin Hotel is the Westin right to get this right here in Scottsdale at both of us out of this. I will let me out early or largest that's right you are, you called it hurt. I think Jim Phillips. I look there are two annual rites of passage are one everybody don't make fun of the commissioner at the commissioners form sort because the Commissioner is going to do things that try to deflect from certain obvious problems between the revenue gap you bcc me to do big school to big leagues the Big Ten and the SEC and then because he is an old-school guy like just about all the other commissioners make fun of the Olympic sports and the academics do this. What we do here like I don't have any problem with what Jim Phillips had to say it. Some of it was very predictable trash talk to Jim Phillips on the program tomorrow and I am looking forward to maybe peeling back some of the things that he discussed Morgan to get to it in the second. There's actually this is sort of the day where mean I'm glad were here. There's an energy in the building, which is really cool when you see some some people that we watch on TV you the ACC network set up is right here are your loved your your your looking at me. It's from. So like behind you. To the left and so there's an energy about this because the football season is pretty close in its NC state day. Dave Doran and Devon Leary both to stop by and you can tell that they're excited for the start of the season. I think everybody's excited for the start of the season but is also some other things that are really cool to talk about that were just going to have to figure out a way to fit in today like I thought major-league baseball's All-Star game last night was just one game might not in great three to final all the runs were scored in one inning for each team so we had eight bats for each side that were useless just did nothing but the most part it's been a really, really this was a fun watch and will get to that little bit later on right now. We got things to do and Dave Doran's at the bottom of the hour, so let's start the proceedings so the Commissioner of the ACC gave his states of the ACC address today and according to Jim Phillips the state of our union is in search of healthy communities for all, not just the two or three gated communities real quick before we hear from Jim Phillips talking about gated communities of my the only one was a little uneasy about that. Like gated communities is keeping people out.

Yeah, I think we should want. I want to litigate. Like, I'd like to afford to live in a gated community without living it again to keep the riffraff out. I am the riffraff. Those little baby feel knowledgeable in our understand that we live in a very privileged sure the elevator goes right to the penthouse of the with the unwashed anyway for Jim Phillips. It was time to look out for the greater good. Here is your is what is talking about will also strongly advocate for college athletics to be a hate healthy neighborhood, not a two or three gated communities resources may be different but access education and competitive opportunity will remain the foundation going for.

I let's get to that part because Jim Phillips spent a lot of time talking about a lot of important things in college athletics. He spent a lot of time talking about the ideals and academics experience for the student athlete which I know. I hope you're like me, every time you hear the term student athlete. I think it's just at this point it's baked in its unfair their athletes or their students. We don't need constant. It's almost a derogatory anyway but talked about Olympic sports, but the reality is that in today's world of fortune 500 college sports that matters.

Matters.

But the bottom line. It doesn't really matter. To his credit, Phillips didn't shy away from the revenue problem.

He said that everything is on the table. Here's Phillips on the growing revenue chasm power five power to the Big Ten. The SEC where revenue was of the ACC and expansion. The only real solution to cutting down. I don't know that it's the only solution I think you have to look creatively been doing that over the last year.

Continue to do that all neighborhood health is not good for college athletics for not again for my reference earlier we understand where those two leads are knowledge of knowing that were all trying to find ways those that I yes we did get another all neighborhoods need to be healthy for I think that was one of three I see now two of three references to healthy communities throughout the rising tide lifts all boats tied to the deal. What he did allude to the fact that everything is on tape and expansion is the only way to improve finances leak. He addressed the potential for like us even distribution of money and that is something that probably should be on the table now in a perfect world it would be so much money coming in that nobody's going to get bent out of shape if it's all shared evenly but when some of your schools like Clemson is so far out front all wise in terms of consistency at home that maybe they deserve a little care here and there is no an extra couple million dollars off top before revenue is distributed. No, it wouldn't impact so much like Clemson ended up if the ACC pulled it when I see was $528 million in shared revenue this past last fiscal year based on tax filing, something I read yesterday so give if you scanned 10 million off top of that, and stuck it in no and Clemson's jacket pocket.

What you spread it around the league. I'm not saying it's inconsequential, but I think we can all understand right I must say that's the way to go but it is an option. By the way expansion expansion is to pay for itself otherwise is no reason to do it and I don't know that there's anybody out there that will pay for itself. Either way, we know today what obviously will get to that. He also said that he believes strongly that if Notre Dame is ever going to jointly it will be the ACC Phillips said that he also said something else that was really interesting to me that their relationship with ESPN is critical.

So I will ask this question will ask it throughout the day to certain people. What is ESPN's incentive to have a strong, vibrant, viable, ACC, I think it's pretty important. I think Carolina basketball, but your you're also clearing football revenue.

Yes, your is important right to have a vibrant viable ACC and the answer is yes. I read this yesterday and what I don't know that it's ever going to happen because there's no real I guess precedent to simply renegotiate a contract that has 13 years left on but I'll just say that all baby ESPN comes back to the bargaining table and sweetens the pot a little bit.

Maybe they do see how that works out.

But certainly it ESPN's best interest to have good ACC and now here's Jim Phillips on this specifically mentions grant of rights will get that second Phillips on the conference as a whole being together. I know where our 17 know or for what schools are we are really aligned to try to find some solutions to that revenue gap, but it can't be at the expense of all the other things that were doing and in so there's a really good plan for us as we move ahead again. Considering all of our options and in these kinds of times you have to do that.

This is unique, which happened over the last 12 months, but after staring into the camera.

Did he say 70 Jim Phillips, a 17 so you heard it here first one is your first 17 I counted about, even if we had Notre Dame I only get 50 yeah what does that tell you is, is this like live golf so we had to team logos and silhouettes coming soon. I don't know. He said it was a slip if someone followed up and asked him was like sorry they can experience about a talk about grant of rights use great analogy for grant of rights analogy, but an example why he thinks grant of rights will hold the said sectional globe made the move to the SEC last year. They're not leaving until after the 2025 season is when the rent events are there grant of rights and what's better for them to play the league's lame ducks or just to get this easy money down. The problem is they can't do so.

Those seem to be a pretty solid legal stance and if that's what holds the ACC together that there's not a lot of worry.

I guess you never know man you know it's undefeated billable hours undefeated if you're watching on video you see that Brian Murphy from W RAL sports investigative reporter is set down with us you immersed in grant of rights you have.

You really dug into that I have well over the document is what I do I should go to law school, but we all should have all been doing better right team, 16 and 17. That's what I actually thought that it was Hendrik Stinson and Cameron Smith decided not to go to live, but will play all sports in the ACC met LB. That would be great if budget Phillips would talk to him later if you'll tell me who the 60% of the schools are. That was a great that was a great faux pas tied to theirs ago. Couple things. Let's start doing mentioned headquarters very difficult. There's three cities to stay can have a two state solution. It's Orlando or Charlotte right like months ago. He said we have a decision about Ed today said, I do within three or four months website what's going use of the next month or two. Set present the proposals to the presidency of the 50 presidents. I have to budge there waiting for North Carolina's budget to pass right includes $50 million in incentives and waited for Gov. Cooper decided. I imagine Israel on the stuff may have kick the can down the middle of it all your art on the Army on the headquarters but it sounds like your things, but got ready to go in his presentations originated well but let's let's get those presentations made an I am of the mind you tell me if I'm crazy I am of the mind. It doesn't back really that's by literally could be post office, multiple lawmakers have told me they negotiated this] multiple lawmakers on the record saying basis is going Charlotte so so why why is this process now drag on for over a year when it first happened, when it was first announced, the said Charlotte right now. Lawmakers who work with the ACC on the back say they're going Charlotte why this has to drag out for another month or two. I don't understand that holding onto more money at this point but yet this was different with no one.

I will Florida come. It was some big package it doesn't become since this thing Florida. I will look at the amount of media that's come Charlotte that most of the drivable certainly… For everybody but by many of you are here because they can easily get here. It seems like Charlotte is the heart of of these think that the state of North Carolina, centrally located, we have schools in Syracuse and Boston and Pittsburgh and Miami that little bit far-fetched to have the like to move HQ but I'm not even sure HQ would matter for this, like, I don't think it would change these. Is there any indication Brian Murphy from W RAL sports investigative reporter there any indication that the location of headquarters has anything to do with like the basketball tournament.

Great the SEC is Hoover, Alabama headquarters of the wise lover who knows. I imagine that regional office space is very cheap and Hoover, Alabama right this only became an issue with the pack 12 with a they bought the most was a real good except discover system and all the submissive goes to Las Vegas later this cheaper. Everyone can work remote do whatever the right. I just don't think that your office matters all that much where your headquarters everybody works on what I don't which leisurely wire to go through this whole process is given a grant or this is my suggestion we buy this tricked out Harvey and Jim Phillips just drives around from school disclosure gas prices with getting electric are. I do understand the Charlotte light right it's an easier flight for all these people front from Boston places you just mentioned that you will get the Charlotte much easier than the Greensboro okay great dog gets a real estate get it done and just just be done with it. It seems like it there. Jim Phillips is way more important things to be dealing with them so what else other than HQ, which I think is the biggest nonstory here me. I want to disparage it but I just told Stephen Reese reasoned that the like – teeth over what are the things that you are that struck you about what the commissioner had to say today that lead you to your art on the follow-up on this.

This world already post a little story at the telecom sports sports figure, about the grant of rights that's right was really interesting talks about how confident he was and you mentioned it that the grant of rights will hold so much in our company was at the 15 schools or stick together after such a perpetual commissioner was said right before USC and UCLA left but we also talked about coffee was that if Notre Dame joined the league it would join the what you finally got through his prepared remarks and to question Phillips did seem to be speaking from like a position of strength when it came to the grant of rights are totally different session he felt seem to build a very confident that at least through 2036 and we can talk when I think at some point the cost of and in the time left those lines will cross you will have a different conversation about grant rights but at least now with with 14 years left on the grant rights the way Jim Phillips is talking that B was the most interesting part that that and also he mentioned a few times how deep and important the relationship was with ESPN or what I want to feel that back in the second golden studio in Monaco speed to router with the capital financial advisory group. We are talking retirement coach. Let's say I have more than $1 million balance in my 401(k) regulations that determine how connect actually come back and bite me because this is the thing that we did we get the Mirage received the Rogers of the desert before you see what's what. Her head was not there when your financial garage is thinking that that total balance in your 401(k) or IRA is yours. We have two people to want to get hold of the two uncles uncle North Carolina and Uncle Sam both of you to do some damage to the balance depending on what kind of other income you have lose 40% of your value. So if you're looking at a million-dollar IRA. Maybe we were 600,000 you. So how do we get around is what you'll get around it could end up in jail to try to do what you can do tax planning to minimize the effect of taxation into the future.

The text train is coming out and we need to make sure to minimize the effect of the derailment of a financial accountant for the next 10 people will do it at no cost or obligation.

Put together your very own tax and retirement plan 800-661-7383 or text Adam to 21000B to route the example use of Texas and Oklahoma not leaving early because grant of rights and southern Kauai and UCLA not leaving early because grant of rights if they are not doing that then what it says is that the grant of rights is a strong, legally binding agreement and it is the way it's written like we don't do that but basically they could've just said we owe you to talk about a lengthy and costly battle with an uncertain outcome spent a lot of time and a lot of money you're not 100% sure with Malcolm to be in Texas and Oklahoma look so this is not working right. It's not worth it, even to Texas who has more money than anybody because just you could lose, you could spend millions of dollars. Probably a two-year process were talking about her at least admit at the end you losing your stuck in the same conference is just cost yourself time and money and you athletic directors and school presidents are in the business of giving away talk about the hundred $20 million in an exit. Nobody wants to come up with that although I think you can pay that out of the time when Marilyn didn't give up, but I think at that time was 50 million.

Marilyn didn't pay that in one lump sum so plus there is the bank of the Big Ten. Part of that from the Big Ten up but so nobody was come up with the hundred $20 million exit.

See, and then like 10 years down the road right if things have not improved that I would be that would be a concern for me today could you not to announce today that it 2036. We are making the move to BSs right Oklahoma Texas time. I was instructed rightly to give two years notice three years the that's about the maximum amount of sugar given. So I think the ACC has time-honored side because of the grand right side buys the leaks of stability advise time. Now what can Jim Phillipson and everybody else here doing that with that time that they bought. I talked to Phillips afterwards to get a little little session. When I asked was okay saying ACC networking. This gets to something else to say basically never gets on the Aaron, Phoenix and Seattle and San Francisco. Does the ACC get that money order the schools I got it on those networks get the money and what he told me is that it's the network that's yeah. So the ACC would get money.

This gets to one of the 5 million distribution right yet this disorder. The survival options for they see about is the partner with the pack 12. It's a way to put factual games on the ACC network and thus increase your distribution of the network right or meet again… Necessarily in favor of expansion or a couple of teams from the West Coast sure which become I think the partnership works a little easier because you have to work the travel costs of of of associating all the stops becoming an ACC network at that point that's true, and that was my question. Like if you're putting factual games on actual get some of that film seem pretty clear to me.

It depends on who's networks are it's on the ACC network crisis. He gets the well that would be that would be good.

I would be curious as to which games would be alabaster one more thing Brian Murphy before let you go oriole sports investigative reporter changes. Sports handle this verse at roof surface. But I was able to cover politics didn't want to alienate other sports okay so start a politics on now back to you. I got to figure the mentioning of ESPN the that ESPN looks of the ACC that you know what we need a viable ACC and say all right, let's let's talk about the deal. Let's gently know the length is the length but let's talk about an increase in rights fee or may be allowing the ACC.

Some of the games to send it out to another network that is willing to add to the pile of think rather than Jim Phillips. I wanted whoever's in charge of ACC network. The origin to be up Atticus holds all the cards there that once you get to decide if the ACC, lives or dies. Not as sad as that that is. But I was having this conversation with someone else. If it's in ESPN's interest not to lose it into the Big Ten. Then you can never air Notre Dame that's Fox, right, if any, of his interest not to have Florida State clubs and go to the SEC because then you're paying double Tecumseh divorce for the same content you're getting right now so I think ESPN it now. They could set a bad precedent by going into this contract and then somebody else comes and says hey what about us. So I think you cannot try to look for some creative ways to get the ACC more money because you're right that ESPN is in bed with a sissy own ACC. It is not any expense interest for the ACC to wither and die, and live in the middle class that led to Phillips Talk about. He wants the ACC in a gated community. While that while the maritime and SC get get even bigger matches. That's not any expense interest all right you know we can talk about about you Phillips probably the most important person in a sissy's sorrow and whoever runs the Brian Murphy which later were given at Mercer at Mercer when I used to. That's good. I'm glad you sent them oriole sports investigative reporter yet there's a lot of things to me. I thought the commission form today was as interesting as it has been.

After we got through all of the we need healthy communities what I'm all about and sponsor women's to talk about first start power had started talk about afterschool program. There was no paternity leave wouldn't get any of that.

That's for another time that you throw to get the politics out right politics that I will become back door. It is good to join us here at ACC football kickoff. This is the out of boat show. Thanks Brian Murphy from WR L and will be back with Dave Dorn next June 19, 2006, but it all started May 6, 1997 with the announcement that the Hartford whalers were coming to North Carolina transition of heartbreak. Figuring it out on the fly became 25th anniversary of the move presented by the Company of North Carolina. Listen now my target on the back your team is your team is this year has that changed things yeah think you know you can get people's best in this league and obviously the notoriety changes to sleep the meter of your locker and keep them grounded. Identify some of the pitfalls that come with complacency, but it's good you know the guys are excited they've earned some notoriety learn some respect and get on the grass will play as a different energy in the spring and into the summer with workouts and guys staying around, and stay together you not.

We had great energy.

The last two year study honest with you it's different in that were not under the radar, but it's not different in how the guys on the building. I think there's a definite hunger. There's some argue should say ships on the shoulder from horrible situation. You know, we didn't win the league last year were we want them to finish a game like we have a lot to prove Stoner guys know that that's what makes it fun not I will know tenant through nine, and three of you look at the finish.

We beat our arrival would be no Clemson for the first time as a program be posterior and UNC and was on the same season so so many good things happen same time. When I do that so there's some energy about that question is yes. I demand investable account specific in your house looking houses on the mantle as you walk in the Murphy Center right there next to the another trophy we get for the taxable mindset among the fan base and maybe even too many people who've been covering the program for a long time before you got here that NC state is better when there aren't any expectations. How do we convince them that that mindset is kind of BS them as somehow I want to mention all of you know I mean to win games and since I've been here for most of my tenure with a lot of games. Bad years just by going on supposed to do. Last year we did that those 1st×35 years of been undefeated at home so there's there's progress. We see these kids coming back as I want to prove something. That's what it's about to have a lot a guys coming back could have made other decisions so it's an older team even some six-year guys to do so, does that those guys take over at that point and you don't have to do as much you know managing day-to-day emotions in Europe because there can hold each other accountable. Yeah, I think the one thing you can't replace as a coach is experiencing your system needs may be recurring over player but he hasn't played on your team also that value is immeasurable.

And I have a lot of experience players. The key for us is getting long field keeping a moan same time right now for once, as I have the last three years really a season will have some severe injuries when a little bit of love and care from the Lord on this one and be nice to have a just now.

It was one of those years were things going away healthwise. There are so many guys who went down last year and it always seems like you found somebody behind them. Good became a star and also think just because he's one of my favorite players to watch league but Tanner Ingle stayed on the field last year and so a lot of it was his own like his own over exuberance on issues that are when he stayed on the field to seem like a major defect. Yeah, Tanner's elite football player. He sees things different people soon is vision of what's going on his ability to react. Obviously, the way his people always use the Tasmanian devil man.

As you know I love watching her fight with school coaches in early lot of us are friends and the number of times someone will come up to me like damn I was 10 little left their second client against the shores of the Halley planet and at St. Thomas. I love how he plays so he no question old-school guy just has tremendous there may be other areas of your football team that you have some concerns about but I'm curious about the offense of line because the way I look at if your offense of line as soon as last year and always became.

That's excited about the guys we have back and I think Anthony Belton is to be a really good football player for us is music is backup. Last year we recruited George Miller military community college and is had a great off-season. You know Bryson's fees is back for 1/6 year and is played a ton of football for us a guard and tackle and to McKay's guys played well and then we need him to stay healthy sets of injury. Things are still west of those three guys attack we feel really good about and just can be held plays out and fall camping on you with the rest of the line. We got chambers of all back which is great for that young man Greg Gibson returns don't McMahon returns Derek Eason returns got a lot of guys at applied is with us here at ACC football kickoff.

I wondered how much conversation here would be about football and how much would be about the landscape of college really college football. More so than college athletics. So Broadway. What are your thoughts on the last two years, but thoughts on what's gonna die every year I come here there's like this hot topic that has nothing to do with us winning right and that's the new one. I think it's a shame personally dismisses me that teams are leaving their conferences. They been in forever for the dollar at the Pac 12 had a good set up, you know, I think losing and again this is just my opinion. Houses like the pageantry college football economy as an athlete that's had a Wesco school that now has to travel to the Midwest and East Coast all the time. I wonder how that's going over for them. You know, that's a lot of travel time zones. That's can be hard on them can be hard on the sleep it's can be hard on the coaches sleeping all that so I hope it's worth it present to me it's I don't think it's good for the student athletes have to do that.

As far as where it's going. I've no idea. I really just like everyone else on the spectator watching all the stuff happening now see where it ends up I feel great about our league and generally has a grant of rights that is very hard to change. I come here and is not the schools so feel pretty protected in the ACC when it comes to the poaching and all those things. I'm just curious because there's a this is revenue gap that is been asked is existing really for a decade between the SEC and the Big Ten in the ACC. Did you do with an additional $13 while you not think there's so many things you know. Can we use that for our roster with and I'll know that would be one thing I would wonder, that would probably not the right one. Not you know what why can some general business man that in the school would thereat. Why can't we do that, why can't that come from the television network itself you know why configured and I'll deal for every student athlete with money like that you know for current players are academic centers. The training rooms the weight room's you know the technology out there.

You guys have no idea how many times we want to buy something and can't because of budget limitations. You know how we travel and hotels. We stay in all of it there so many improvements that could be made to Stephen if academic center for us. You know, how can we improve technology. Some students have better tutors better rams to study and you know so many things.

Now the dorm set up like I can you do things that way.

So there's a lot many other charitable things you can do with money like that of the communities around so yeah now would love to have that problem.

Summers get shorter they did I start earlier to what was your summer like fishing you do is go fishing yeah you know we finished a crazy June never seen recruiting market has been in June this year went went to the mountains mama sans ghost Appalachian State so went to the mountain spend some time up there with some friends and and then went to Lake Gaston which is kind of our getaway and then finished it off of the trip to Montana to my sons flyfishing them in North Carolina and and and and not whitefish Montana this year so had a great summer too short. You mention really wish a little bit more time with the family, but excited to be back.

Well good luck.

ECM is the first one yeah will talk to you very soon. Again, I appreciate it man. GOPAC got it was fun to catch up with.

I appreciate you wondering if we could use that extra money to directly pay the players might yeah my least favorite thing about Jim Phillips today was the idea that you know we need national guidelines for and IL ghetto no what was going to be crazy at first because we went from 0 to 100 miles an hour but so there's going to be an adjustment. It will settle it'll settle down and if you're worried about these monies being used as fruiting inducements, where you been that's been the case as long as we've had recruiting. I keep using this analogy, try to cast aspersions on program John wooden didn't get a bunch of great players to go from New York City to Westwood because man what a great program. Great programs everywhere. There are recruiting inducements so this is not saying you should be concerned about understanding that it's okay and the money should go to kids anyway. So let's get as much money in their hands as possible. The long-term is maybe they stay longer. How would that be good, right June 19, 2006, but it all started May 6, 1997 the announcement that the Hartford whalers were coming to North Carolina transition of heartbreak. Figuring it out on the fly became 25th anniversary of the presented by the Carolina listen my
