Our Constitution was memorialized before the Constitution that we know today was ratified, the United States governing document was the articles of Confederation. Tell the story about how we got from that document to our Constitution is Dr. Larry on Pres. of Hillsdale College in our own Monty Montgomery himself. A graduate of the college taken away… The story of American history is one of the most remarkable stories and we came here from nowhere, settled the continent extended freedom across the whole all that really made this revelation is really great story to end the story of the revolution begins like this.

State legislatures under the British crown where the most democratic system of government ever practiced in the world for about 150 years.

Over that time and so they all had gone they had their identities, they were not.

By the way separate. They were united by the British crown.

But they didn't have to work together and the British government to care for and the British managing the county's foreign policy would get themselves involved in the French and Indian war, which Britain went with victory came debt. The British flushed with victory side. We just spent a lot of money on this colony. And so we're going to tax and regulate its advantage as well. That was 150 years too late because these people were used to run in their own business and that's how the American Revolution started. It really started 1763 in it when in stages.

People just started communicating different. They started writing to each other more and different kinds of things across state lines in cities and Boston was a hotseat. The rest of the country was very involved and then finally they sent delegates to a legislative body called Continental Congress in this Continental Congress. They wrote and adopted a constitution, the articles of Confederation Confederation leave the states in near-total power, but it's also called the articles of Confederation and will you so it had become a country so it's charge now with waging war for the birth of the nation and sell the articles provided that there was no real executive branch, Congress would pick somebody to run the government. Most things required nine states to agree 13 super majority that is hard to agree about anything and something and they didn't have any power to get any money except by asking states, you know, the best will world if you don't really have to send money will you know when they did when he got so mad in the last year of the war.

There's a big meeting of the Continental Army. By the way, it's really cool that George Washington named the arm Continental Army because it's time he did that he did know how big the continent was he actually never lived to see you here the knowledge of how because Lewis and Clark was about six years after he died.

So he they they had a big meeting in Newburgh and a cockamamie plan they were going to pick up and go out West and start over and leave these idiots to their own devices we have won the war against greatest power on earth, having started not only no army, but no large military experience anywhere in America and we won this war and they won't pay us. They just didn't get paid no so the best plan they came up with was let's just march out West and leaving to their own devices they had justice on their side, but is also a little bit like a petulant child and George Washington corrected. He went there.

He wasn't invited here about one thing you can do. By this time, and for the rest of his life was have a fight in public with George Washington because he was just so great. So we intervene Thursday moved the meeting to a different time and then he showed up and walked up there make speech is very affecting speech when Rick takes out his excuse me, I've grown old serving with you. Then he makes himself there sir. George Washington in this matter. I will be your servant.

See George Washington get so that shows the weakness of the government under the articles of Confederation. The articles of Confederation were failing and soon prominent thinkers such as James Madison were writing that change needed to happen fast. He writes a essay called devices of political system, the United States, so the spices political system just names. What's wrong can't pay her bills begin keep the peace there riots all over the country. The British are all over our soil and can't get off and they just scoff at us there armies were afraid to go near the and so this a work those factors led a group of people and it was widespread. All of the states and somebody got all of them remained in the autumn since somebody to figure out how to revise the articles of Confederation. That's what the Constitution's call to bring states to the table to discuss it the needed Washington, Madison and Hamilton had Washington persuaded to go Washington was so honorable that his sense of honor could get his way, and there articles in the paper saying that the Society of the Cincinnati which existed in America today is the Society of the now send one. And yes, name different for a Roman statesman who was famous for resigning his commission, returning to private life to everyone so they styled himself but then people got false idea that it was emerging aristocracy and Washington was embarrassed as he hated the idea that is proof and so he decided not to go to a convention of the Cincinnati. But then he decided if I go to the constitutional convention, it'll be in the papers and it will be apparent that I have snubbed my fellow officers in the Cincinnati so my personal situation prevents fighting.

You know, Madison reads that get on his horse and he goes to Mount Vernon and goes that day the doctor that got because we can do it without an document to exactly what arguments he was after that visit question return to the idea of going to Washington was a very shrewd man. Tremendous judge men things he was.

Not say offensive in his constitutional convention. He said one thing but he sitting up there at the front and one thing he said was he offered toward the end of mild correction Rick Kaiser wrote a good book about questions short to call founding father is very good book and that he says in that book that the nature wash what Washington had to say emphasize the point that there's not much wrong because they're designing a strong executive in the and that was controversy because they just been fine again.

The fact that washing was set and everybody just knew whatever the executive is he sitting right there. You know, he ran twice unopposed as you can. Washington could have been made a king but he wasn't even though there were forces asking him to be made one. There was a different fella. He was circulating the letter make Washington King course there you know there like we are today, but it was we don't know what is the whole regime going to change. Maybe in Washington intervenes to denounce strongly to that particular soldier and two others in the end it was Washington that help hold together unruly formation and bring about a better rule of law through example, Madison actually made the gears turn and wrote the best reasoning for our Constitution, replacing the articles of Confederation years with Madison at the same what is government but found just about commentaries on human men were angels, no government will be needed. If angels were to govern men, other internal or external controls on the government would be necessary. And that's a piece of beautiful logic. That is, by the way, undeniable, and it justifies the Constitution United States in 26.

Special thanks to Dr. on telling the story the way only he and maybe a handful of historians tell in this country. The story of the articles of Confederation dear on our Americans screaming that first sermon at Farmington South good neighbor.
