A story comes to us from the little town of Knoll Missouri where there's a church that has an expected amount of immigrants attending peers pastor Josh Manning and his wife Lauren with the story. My name is Josh Manning and lying on a divan – and I've been married nearly 20 years, so I where were come along, I did 20 years at Walmart housing Assistant Manager and so you are crazy hours. I mean, you know, 15 days in a row. At times I remember doing that 12 hour shifts.

A lot of those kind of things he was at Walmart constantly. We lived in our life, in which he works. And so for a lot of years. There we were, you know that's that's all we were doing is I was us bringing home a paycheck and Margo's home and was never quite fulfilled.

I just never had this feeling that we were doing what God called us to do only said God has something for us guys going to do something with SNI. I one is that mean we have little kids we had twins and tears later had another baby.

So we had three kids under three. I was 28 trade homeschool three kids as they grew, and Josh not being around and trying to be inter to do the right things is a difficult season.

We decided through that decided that it was time for us to do something and follow the great commission and some of the time I pastor was. I would consider great commission preacher is about sending.

He was about missions and I had never really truly heard a pastor that was so clear and direct.

I don't know.

It clicked with us.

I think it clicked around the same time. When you great guy. Actually it was like well we had. We were watching him his preaching. We were watching a young family for my church sell everything they own and moved to Peru in the jungles they set up little churches down the Amazon River and a brightest little boat down the Amazon River and disciple. The pastors there and this is a family are age it just just blew us away and we got to the church that family just left so we we need even see them and didn't know them but knew their story to the whole church was talking about it and that was hugely impactful. The other thing was Lauren made me go to see David Platt speak and I I need know anything about this guy that he was talking about about the concept of just going that that is the concept of the gospel is as you hear the truth and you go and tell the truth I mean that's basic premise and so it impacted us greatly and so those two and in our faithful teaching of a very good pastor. Those three just really just pushed us in that position. We didn't know where we were going to go but we knew that we were going to share the gospel.

Whatever whatever means that we had. We were going to do so as boldly and loudly is what we what we could possibly do and we found out there was a church in Knoll Missouri that the pastor had left throne of his hands and discussed ran screaming as many other pastors had their blunt what the main industry is in the entire County and in that town is the poultry industry and so what happened was, is, of course you have these these farmers low smalltime farmers that can have chicken houses but to have workers in a very rural county to be able to work work the plants they just there isn't any. And so probably about 25 years ago. 30 years ago in that ballpark Hispanic population started to move in and in relatively more recent times, we start to get refugees from all over the world. Knoll has extremely diverse population.

There's 30 nations birthing account 2000 people. There's 10 languages that my estimation are large enough to have a church functioning and sell your have large families refugee population living limited English skills and so it's a very challenging place to present the gospel, but in some ways it served up for you on a silver platter because you know where to go to catch these people you don't plan so I became pastor of a church that had two primary languages English speaking of course Scott Karen from EMR is also called Birmingham have heard that they had been in Civil War for the longest running Civil War since World War II.

Yeah they been in Civil War when we found out they were from Burma. We were referred to as the Burmese people and that is not something you should do because the Burmese government attacks these little Josh can tribes yet I come in and eight seconds on their own country will fight against them so they are very proud to be Karen and they have a Buddhist background Christian heritage so there's this kind of a hodgepodge of religions within the Karen people they come to our church groups of them come faithfully and we get to preach the gospel and so not all of the adults necessarily know English in our church so we have a translator and necessarily a Christian family Buddhist either. He's kind of a mix of different religions that we can as translators for the parents and God bless this be on her wildest dreams. Now it's four years later there five independent services are operating in our building. We have service you know all day long from 10 in the morning till nine at night frequently on Sunday in five separate languages attempting to start services in other languages as well, and we still have no idea what were doing, but God continues publicity. Despite our our idiocy and you been listening to Josh and Lauren Manning eating the call and following your heart following their God and doing essentially a turnaround. We returned to our American stories and pastor Josh Manning and his wife Lori story of operating a church in the small town of Knoll is for many immigrants call home and call his church. In fact, Josh is five different services five different languages that is church using interpreters to spread the gospel in the process. Why do these immigrants especially the Korean people from EMR start attending Knoll community Baptist Church.

Let's continue with the story so we'll have a whole lot of prior information.

The one little segment we do know is that John then that we live in such a gracious Manning Mike Brown. He saw the refugees coming into the town.

He saw the changing demographics. He saw the potential.

You know what the nations are coming to us. Let's reach out to the nations was not set here in here and get to know them and so he went to I think he just randomly went to the Karen housing understand right there. I'll sleep on the ground furniture so Mike talked to the people of the church at that time. Let's find mattresses for every current family so the church is dead and they made a relationship with them and they started going fishing together, they started hanging out little by little, they started populating the church before like translator was needed because the sermon became bilingual and so are translator game and he stepped up and became the translator. He's also the liaison enticing for the Karen people so he translates for a living. Excellent excellent at it and mine a show father my translator game anew.

This guy is just the American dream on steroids so mine a so gets captured by the Burmese army him and said her six other men, seven in total, and he was given the job of walking in front of the Army to set off landmines and so he's captured game anew is just a baby. If I understand right at that point.

So he's away from home. He's a long ways away after about a year. There's only him and one other guy left. They were in a tiger pit at night and they overheard that they were going to get executed. The next morning so mine is so gets out the tiger pit runs through the jungle comes back to the family there reunited and they are out of their takes quite a bit of time to very very rugged terrain today would arrive in a refugee camp in Thailand. Once through their you basically have 500 acre area however large it is kinda fenced off amen described it as on your third offense leaving this area you were shot on site was illegal to learn the local language had limited opportunity, limited educational opportunities limited everything you were just there gathering dust in a handmade hut any rate over time they get to the opportunity come the United States. They do so.

So this guy came to the United States in almost every Midwest relatively poor place itself got really just 1 Main Rd. going through town half the businesses are shuttered were were losing our bank that we just had to go pick up this safe deposit box from the for the church is the bank is even leaving town and what he's done his family's extraordinary. His kids are going to college. They have aspirations of being doctors and lawyers and all those kinds of things and they are smart enough. They're going to accomplish it. He purchased a house equal pay it off in three years after purchase. Put significant bolt down in cash because he saved up enough money to do it.

They have trucks and cars and they become US citizens, and they do all these kind of things that that you would hope in your wildest dreams that someone would do. Coming to the United States that just a condition where the gospel was an action and every Sunday he's gonna bring his family to church. Now he's a guy that's probably my age or older.

Learning the English language is going to be a challenge, and so there is five in which it preached in every Sunday and Spanish English juke Marshall Islands and Karen but there are going to be just like in my service you're going to have a one person who speaks a different dialect, the Karen that's not preached in I think nine nations of birth is my record for our service and they were talking like 60 people and it's it's a challenge just because even if you you can communicate even through a child to an adult back and forth you miss enough nuances that some of this stuff ends up being confusion you very different.

You on how time works, and so on. My job is kind of like be the central hub and make sure there's not like to services trying to do the same. Different things in the same spot at the same time being flexible how you just have to be insanely flexible and very comfortable with not knowing what you're doing next week. These cultures honestly, I swear they they decide five minutes before they're doing it may organize 100 people meet in the church building and you don't know what to expect in gospel day we Marshall Islands folks so we did very well been there a few weeks and it was late evening. 6789.

Anyway, we look out and I think Claire our daughter was the first to say mom there is 6 foot boat so about you is sailing ship replica being pushed into the gym were talking like Christopher Columbus would've written that kind of wooden sailing boat.

Yes the replicant and that they got inside the gym and they pushed it in and we are looking at Facebook live like what real loud and members of the church and they're all like dancing around this wooden boat what is happening.

This is like 10, 11, and I was late, early lay in the neighbors. I think it oh my goodness you neighbors not shoot as well. What what is happening.

The music is so loud didn't know what coronation was happening. Turns out it's called gospel day and what they do is they celebrate when the missionaries first came to their island and how they do that is, they bring a a replica of the wooden sailing ship that came to their island. They fill it full of food and toiletries and stuff like that. The needy in their community to pass out and they dance and sing and it's the most beautiful gospel centric wonderful thing ever. But what it looks like is if you're the pastor the church in the parsonage is you got hundred plus people dancing around the gym playing music really, really loud at you know up to midnight.

You know, and on a school night school the next morning, and so that that's that's the type of life we have to be very, very, very, very, very flexible, very Vegas thing I've learned is never going back to how I worship God before I'm not being a follower of Christ means that it permeates every aspect of how you live your life as you prepare for the next only reason that the moment of salvation. You're not whisked away to heaven.

At that moment is because we have a job to do and that's to teach others about Christ and we should be busying about with that possibility and this dynamic of what we have just here in our backyard is one the most enjoyable things I've ever done in my life just the absolute honor to be able to preach Christ in this environment is something I've never had before and I'm not going back to worshiping God. Where I sit on a pew at this time. On Sunday, and then at the minute that this clock strikes noon. I'm out of there going the restaurant and I've done my duty for the week. That's not going to be away were live her life. Doesn't mean they'll be pastors, church the day I die. It may very well be that, but whatever we do, were to follow Christ in every aspect that we can do a great job by Monty Montgomery on the production by well over the line. Josh said the nations are coming to us. Let's not live in fear. Let's get to know and serve our faith. An action story. So many great stories in this great country of people of all faiths serving their God.

That's because this big pile of dirty clothes and all three clear maggot packs have your back purchase all three clear mega packs today and conquer any laundry load for all fabric types all our American stories and up next to me of the story of Charlie Ridge, London, brought to us by author Iris Jamaal Dunkel was a teacher at Napa Valley College, California. His love, Jack London ever since she went on the future Jack London State Park when she was in middle school field trips parked within her desire to make writing her life is faith with the store Jack London best-selling American author is known for his adventure stories such as call of the wild and the sea wolf is popular short story to build a fire is not only famous for his writing. During his time. He was truly a celebrity. He was known for his world travels and his adventures and boat trips around the globe, but many people do not know that London was hardly a solo traveler. Many of us check. He was accompanied by his second wife, Charmian Kittredge, London. We have known very little about.

It's only 2020 that the first full-length biography on Charmian Kittredge London was published. Iris Jamaal Dunkel we come to find that she herself was a writer and adventure, and so much more than just Jack London's wife here is author Iris Jamaal Dunkel and how she came across Charmian when she was looking through a book of poems and found a very famous picture of Jack London, a picture of Jack London on the hillside on his horse is actually on Sonoma Mountain and it said taken by charming and I had seen that photo a million times in my life conducted at the park at Declan State Park is on the garbage can and said so familiar to me, but I had never thought to think who took that photo and so I immediately reached out to Jack London scholars in height course on it all the time and I said did you know that Charmian took this photograph and they said well I never really thought to ask that question and that's where I was like oh wow what else haven't we asked and so I went back to Charmian's life and try to figure out why was her story not school correctly and the answer came in researching the story of how she met Irving Stone who wrote ended up writing a biography about her and Jack London called sailor on horseback and she thought he just wanted to write a biography about Jack, she got visitors all the time who wanted to do that he came into her life and just totally seduced her acted like she was in complete intellectual. He adored her worksheet written biography on Jaclyn and herself. He never arrived. He took her out dancing and it turns out that through this kind of seduction. He got her to sign away her legal rights to her story, he made her think that they would be collaborating on the story, but because she signed away her legal rights and he actually did not like her at all and you start C start to see this.

He wrote this horrible version of Charmian in his biography, a biography actually fictional biography because of the licensing took stories he told and he he wrote that, and time.

He was so mad about his violation of her trust that number one she burned many of her document, including some of her early diary. She talked about what it was like to be a woman in the late 1800s, a woman who is college educated, a woman who was driven to find a career she burned those because he didn't understand it, he thought, because she didn't get married and had different people who she dated that she must be a you know a loose woman. You know, instead of like she knew she got married she lose her job because that's the way it worked.

Back in so she burned her diary. She also locked everything away and Huntington Library and at that point. What I did when his book came out and started saying the things that she was an airhead. She really slandered her husband's name made it worse for him was jealous didn't care about anything is option which is all false life because of that, because she locked down files. The version that he published of her stock for the next 80 years, and it wasn't until scholars like Larry size and myself were able to dig back into that content and on earth who she really was that the public is really getting to know her again and so even at the park at Declan State Park things were telling a different story than how they really were.

So it's important to know who she really lives and that's where the book begins with that question. Cremeans family moved across the country following the gold dress started their lives in California which army was born with a picture of the American unfortunately at the young age of five. Her mother passed away and she was left with her father, which wouldn't last long. One day her aunt to see came into her dad, boardinghouse and found Charmian was propped up on the bar. She's five years old talking to all the people who come into the bar right to listen to their stories. But her.

It is no way to raise a lady.

She and Vanessa who ended up raising charming on her way to Oakland to be raised by Herod on and that's when Charmian started to really come into her own. Fast forward several years and when Charmian is 14 years old.

Her father came up to visit and 39. He felt ill and was they sent Charmian out on an errand and go get this medicine when she came back, came back to an empty bed. Her father had died. They had removed his body and she never got to say goodbye as it was a loss of is really hard for her to get over because of that and afterwards she became fiercely independent. She learned shorthand. She got a job working at Mills College got her education and finally met like-minded people of the intellectual women because milk college with one of the first schools on the on the West Coast to the west of the Rockies to open up for when then she became a stenographer and she had to work for one of the largest shipping firms in same Cisco assistant that reported to her she had purchased her own horse. She had made that clean her house and very successful and very confident, and she dated a lot of guys during this time all her dating and socializing would soon bring her to meet the best-selling author Jack London changing the course of her life through her aunt, but the time was a writer and editor for the Overland monthly Jaclyn and was not snazzy when he was young he lady would like a sailor. He had violated you now and he didn't really get fasting quite yet having he was a very handsome man but she was like at first you like this guy you know when she sat down in conversation he signed like a jar full of the thing being, and she had a similar mind media connection intellectually only review my book and she's like sure whatever I'll do it you now and biosphere books. He couldn't get handbook so a lot of the Dharma bills with band at the time she what he wanted to yield to read this lecture by sometimes. So they scheduled to have them come back and so the connection that all his plans in the medical horseback riding with Jack to know how to do that she was going to teach them how to ride that he out of the blue decided to get married and he married best matter additives like this commitment towards being a writer getting schedule you know he thought it would make very nice children together and so training was like about the weird whatever you now something in between.

The relationship really parked something in her. She's like you know I travel the world.

She went around Europe and started writing about her travels, which is something that she had always wanted to do since she was a child she'd dreamed of traveling the world in writing about it. So when she gets back to the Bay Area from her travels.

She is a changed woman goes back to working as a stenographer and she gets invited to Jack London's house and you're listening to Iris from old uncle told the story of Charmian Ridge, London, and when we come back more of the story. The story of her book, Charmian Kittredge, London trailblazer author adventure dongle's book is the first full-length biography on John was Jack London's second wife stories been told inaccurately for years and mostly forgotten we left off. After Jack decided to marry someone else rather than let that get her down. Charmian began traveling upon her return was invited to London's house back Irish your multiple that's where all of the artists are going for parties. She challenges Jack to fencing's. He was like oh yeah okay lady love you this email out Joseph.

Let me when by little did he know a time you studied fencing at Mills College fee.

She was knocking out just let it when she was very athletic and so she went and kicked his butt and he was so shocked he ran over and kissed her and let granted Jack London had two small babies at home and he was married. They didn't immediately have an affair right behind that kiss.

She kept going to the parties they were in the same social circles. They were always coming across each other and doing activities together. Slowly they started to have that connection that they felt built into the romance that just caught on fire.

They were so over-the-top and love their love letters are just ridiculous in their in their sapping something they write to each other like three or four times a day in the mailbox for your letter why they were so in love and why they call each other meet they found each other. The mirror image of who they wanted and so I think that's why ignited, married, sneak around until he finally tells his wife that he wants and this of course caused a huge ruckus in celebrity is written called while he filed first for divorce in California law that time he had to wait a year before you get married and so you know they they started. It was really troubling for Jackie Ashley. Finally, more like Morley was dealing with the fact that he was leaving his young family right and feeling bad body so that it they got married today that the divorce went through instead of waiting for this plan ceremony and that was kind of like Outlook going forward and off they went on the went to Tamika and Cuba and began their explorations in writing about them when they came back to the bay area to start their married life together.

It's to travel got the better of them and they started planning a boat trip on a small yacht club start.

After some delays in 1907. They finally set sail on the start. This is when Charmian began logging their journey throughout all the trips they were being followed by reporters and stories were being written about their adventures.

They all kind of crazy adventures on the start, including when they're in Hawaii. They both learn how to surf and what's notable is how Jack Wade. Record these these adventures and his writing about the trip called the crews of the start as if he were the only one doing things. In reality, tyramine is also there surveying on a 75 pound wooden surfboard with him in in Waikiki that it sold more copies to have just Jack London and so that's why he recorded it that way throughout their adventures so they travel from Hawaii to that my casein islands CD and then on to Tora Bora and beyond the Solomon Islands. They and they plan to continue on.

But while there on this adventure.

They both develop Ya's which is a disease that you get in the South seas where you get these wounds on your arms that are big as baseball. Jack became very, very ill, and so they had to leave the Solomon Islands and travel to Australia so he could have surgery and recovery, but unfortunately it was something that Jack couldn't recover from and they had to end the trip and Charlie was devastated.

This was probably the most important journey of her life. She felt like.

And so when they when they had to end the trip. She she said she was so sad when they got back from their journey. Charmian soon found out she was pregnant in May 2019 time she started to get ready to give birth.

She went into labor and they had been told everything was normal, but very soon into labor. They realize that everything was not normal. Charmian Wade maybe hundred and 15 pounds and her baby weight over 9 pounds and she was having a very difficult labor. The doctrine of having to use force that and because of that broke. She later called her baby joy baby that Dr. Popejoy's lack what makes it worse is that while she was delivering Joe away her placenta didn't deliver, and so she was bleeding out on the table and had to be rushed into immediate surgery. And so it turned out that she never got to see her child in the 38 hours that she survives, so it was really really sad time for tyramine she was, not only physically damaged by the birth. What happened from the surgery she had directly after giving birth was scar that was a terrible job and she ended up with terrible scar tissue and so she was.

Unbeknownst to her, she was not going to ever be able to carry a child to term. After the terrible loss of her baby. They went back to their adventures and Jack began research for his novel the Valley, the noon time training is a real interval part of their collaboration team and she's taking notes she's getting her own perspective and what what happens is Jack actually starts include incorporating some of her actual text into the novel and so she makes note of this in her diary as he's composing it so we have proof of her collaboration with Jack on the actual tax and what's really interesting is in the novel that Jack writes based on her interaction and collaboration we see one of the first real like women socks in the protagonists from the Valley of the moon really seemed like a real woman, her experiences like losing her child seemed really vivid and real in the reason why is because Jack was actually talking to chime you directly about that and she was able to give him direct feedback after going on this journey decides to head to New York. They want to go on passage on the Jericho, which is the three masted set that they want to take around Cape Horn to Seattle from their journey on the Jericho appendicitis and when he goes in for surgery. His doctor realizes that really bad shape and he got a change behavior or you know this is not your kidneys are failing. Little did he know that what with any failure partially with the fact that while they were on the start with their experience in the stores. They would run Mercury appointment on their swords and because of that near Mercury is not good for you so so L in the months that followed, he gets worse and worse and finally November 1 night he comes into timing sleeping porch came and told her how much he loved her and that is an echo read he she looked over a few hours later and he was slumped over and she thought he just fallen asleep.
