From what some people might regard as a very obscure passage of Scripture. We have an outstanding illustration of grace. King David, a man after God's own heart displays grace abundant grace, he displays the grace of God to a very surprising person. That's the nature of grace is it is undeserving. David is going to display grace to the grandson of the man who for years trying to kill him.

So if you have your Bibles turn with me to second Samuel chapter 9 is page 268 in the pew Bible and I'm going to read into this 13 versus those beautiful story in the life of David King David, Israel's greatest king second Samuel nine verse one. And David said, is there still anyone left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan's sake that there was a servant of the house of Saul's name was Eva and they called him to David and the king said to him are using the and he said I am your servants at the king said, is there not still someone of the house of Saul, that I may show the kindness of God to him.

The percent of the king. There is still a son of Jonathan. He is crippled in his feet becoming such a window seat and see percent of the king is in the house of Mikey or the son of Antonio at Lodi bar and King David sent, and brought him from the house of Mikey of the son of MEL at the bar and refurbish earth, the son of Jonathan, son of Saul came to David and families face and paid homage. And David said refurbish earth and he answered, behold, I am your servant. And David said to him, do not fear, for I will show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan and I will restore to you all the land of Saul your father and you shall eat at my table always you paid homage them and said what is your servants that you should show regard for the dead dog such as I and the king called zebra sulci within such him all that belonged to Saul until his house have given to your master's grandson and junior sons and your servant shall till the land for him, and shall bring in the projects that your master's grandson may have bread to eat but nothing to share with your master's grandson shall always eat up my table. No zebra had 15 sons and 20 servants than zebra said to the king, according to all that my lord the king commences servant, so will your servant, do so much for British earth.

Eight at David's table like one of the king's sons and my favorite chef had a young son, whose name was Micah and all who lived in zebra's house became refurbish of servants. So much for Bishop to live in Jerusalem, for he ate always at the king's table that he was lame in both his feet is not beautifully constructed story. 13 versus a master storyteller, master writer. As we have this fascinating story.

This little story in the life of David as is found in second Samuel chapter 9 I think a story like this helps us to understand why David is called a man after God's own heart that's always intrigued me. As I've said before, why is it that David was called a man after God's own heart.

In fact, we know that David failed to David sinned and David messed up by eight. We could understand a little better. Perhaps Joseph O'Daniel is very little sin recorded by such great heroes of our faith in the Old Testament, but David with a story like this may help us to understand why David and only have David said that this was a man after God's own heart. One of her themes in Calgary here for 2019 is that we would display and proclaim the Lord Jesus with grace and truth is a great goal is in the to display the grace of God. All of us here, as Khalil mentioned have received grace above all, we received the grace of God. As I look back on my life very very thankful for. For parents who were very gracious to me for four friends for family, for colleagues for a wife who is being gracious. The question is the challenge for us is we who have received grace must display grace to others and this is exactly what David is doing now. First of all we want to think of a dramatic fall from grace turn back the second Samuel chapter 4 will in chapter 9 just a few chapters back second Samuel chapter 4 and will read about the fall of Mr. Bush's two Samuel four verse four Jonathan, the son of Saul by the son, who is crippled in his feet. He was five years old when the news about Saul and Jonathan came from Jezreel and his nurse to come up and fled she flagged in her haste he fell and became lame and his name was refurbish and who is refurbish as well. He is the son of Jonathan who is Jonathan. Jonathan was the son of Saul, this man for British earth that we meet is the grandson of Israel's first king King Saul and when refurbish earth is five years old.

He felt his nerves dropped him as she was fleeting and in that fall that dramatic fall he was crippled for the rest of his life. Jezreel is mentioned as a Valley north of Jerusalem and on the Southwest that are the high slopes of Mount Carmel and Mungo war and was on my little ball you remember they remember where the Philistines was chapter 4 Samuel describes it, for the Philistines had the decisive victory over King Saul and the Israelites and on that terrible day that lamentable day. Saul and his three sons, Jonathan, been a dab and multi-sure is described in four Samuel 31. All of them were killed in battle, and when Saul knew that he was going to be defeated in battle your member yes his armor bearer to kill him and his armor better refuse to do so and so Saul Israel's first came commit suicide and takes his own life and no on the slopes of Mungo bore Saul and these three sons lie dead, humiliated in battle, defeated by the armies of the Philistines, the very enemies of God. And when that terrible news reaches this family. This nurse who had the responsibility given by Jonathan I'm sure is is away at war.

She takes a little boy and in her arms and she runs and she drops her in this refurbish earth, the grandson of King Saul potentially an air to his throne is dropped and as we read twice over, and second Samuel chapter 9 verse four we read he is crippled in his feet and the last thing that is said in chapter 9 that you notice it. He was lame in both his feet growing up, my family should must've learned the history of his father Jonathan on the news.

Grandfather, he would've known that his grandfather King Saul. Years had punted Dunn's David trying to kill him looking for him in the caves and crevices of the wilderness within failed and no his father and his grandfather both dead and King David is on the throne, the mighty King David, the great warrior who defeated the Philistines dividends to the long as a young man against Goliath. Neither the mighty David is King of Israel king of Judah, and the for Bishop lives, I think, in fear that perhaps one day King David's men are going to call, and kill them, and so eliminate any threat to the throne. He's living on Jerusalem the capital within a very isolated time.

Did you notice that in verse five is living at low debar around the remotes place this fall was a betting traumatic one with the impact which lasted all of his life. He is permanently lame, not just a one food, but in both feet from being a potential heir to the throne. He is not disinherited is totally dependent on others is a cripple. He's living a long way fearful life with a permanent disability or fall of the ship for refurbish it for the dramatic fall of refurbish earth as an illustration is in the much more dramatic fall of all that is impacted and still impacts each one of us, of course, I'm referring to the fall of Adam and Eve described in Genesis 3 made in the image of God made to reflect and to glorify God. Our first parents willfully disobeyed the Lord and so send the consequences of that fall are far-reaching, right down to today Lord God said, Genesis 217 of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat from the day that you eat of it you shall surely die. Word of God is clear the soul essential die.

The wages of sin is that so all of us without exception have had a traumatic fall.

Not only are we born sinners, we are because of Adam's fall. All of us are born sinners but all of us willfully choose to send every single person here without exception has rebelled against God. All of us have personal sin and failure in the lives we don't all commit the same sins. But we all sin. Paul writes Romans 512, just as sin came into the world through one man, Adam, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all have sinned you think of refurbish with this little boy lame in both feats through no fault of the loan, in the sense as a five-year-old trying probably in the early years of his life trying to get rid of these lame feet trying to repair himself. Perhaps consulting a doctor. I don't know, but truck perhaps trying to get help to repair the permanent disability because of that fall, but to no avail.

These lame in both his feet and try as you might in this. Try as I might, all of the good intentions all of your New Year's resolutions. All of the religion all of your counseling all of your Santa Fe cannot put us together again, this dramatic fall from grace has left all of us bruise broken. The Bible said, spiritually dead, dead in our trespasses and sins, and under the judgment of God and because of the assets we are totally unable to save ourselves, were totally unable to establish a true relationship with God traumatic fall from grace. But secondly, a dramatic summons to grace and here the writer and second Samuel nine is referring to David's covenants with Jonathan David and Mitch for Bishop's father. Jonathan had enjoyed a beautiful friendship. When Jonathan dies a David's greatly mourns in the opening chapters of second Samuel memories as of Jonathan your work, your love to me was wonderful suppressing the love of woman that was extraordinary. The relationship between David and Jonathan and even when Saul was trying to kill David. It was Jonathan who encouraged David and help David in many ways, even although many people lesser manner than Jonathan would've resented David because after all, he might've said my father is getting a Monday with my father is dies I will be king.

But instead of that, he graciously helps David because he knows David is the Lord's anointed. You may recall back in first Samuel 20 David's and Jonathan entered into a beautiful covenant that David would not quote cut off your steadfast love from my house.

Whatever.

And so David and Jonathan make this covenant and Jonathan is saying to David David when you become came. I want you to promise on you to covenant with me that you will not cutoff the steadfast love from my house and David a man after God's own heart keeps his promise. Now many years later, many years after the covenant is made and Jonathan and Saul is dead on the terrible years of the persecuted by an angry and bitter and even hateful man like Saul, David know is at the pinnacle of his career he's established only king of Judah, but king of Israel is left have grown in the solids and he is taken the city of Jerusalem and Zion captive and then he is the mighty powerful King David. He's defeated the Philistines and he secured in his position as King, but he does a wonderful thing he remembers his love for Jonathan and he remembers the covenant he made verse one.

The second Samuel nine and David said this is still anyone left of the house of David, the I may show him kindness for Jonathan's sake remembers the covenant he made with Jonathan David is a man of grace. He's a man of kindness and he wants to show kindness to anyone that's laughed of the house of Saul, for the sake of Jonathan sometimes people who are very successful people who do well in life sometimes forget the background I've known men who become so successful. We almost feel ashamed of the parents who perhaps with poor or brought up very humbly. It's tragic is tragic is noted when the Lord blesses someone and people forget where they came from and the forget the loan from old friends and their own family. David is not like that he understands that Saul had been David's deadly enemies seeking to kill David hunting him down like an animal. But God and he knew it was God. God had protected David and not David, not Saul and I were the descendents of David are going to be on the throne forever.

The Davidic covenant that we called a look at this in a few weeks ahead is given a second Samuel seven David knows that that his descendents are not going to reign forever and another descendents of salt. He understands that what he wants to show kindness.

He wants to show grace to someone from the house of Saul, and so what happens do this. Verse three that zebra settlement explains that Lefebvre shared the son of Jonathan is mostly crippled in his feet. Why do you think he said that was that relevant when showing the relevant factor was is this individual of the house of Saul are not. Why does Eva say but David, I have to tell you this is characterless he's he's certainly of the house of David were these crippled in his feet was that of the implication was urgent to think that the mighty King David.

All of these power all of these military and administrative brilliance in such a magnificent warrior such a great leader. Such a powerful King was in the implication that such a great person would want to bother with a person with such a disability does Eva think it might be rather embarrassing to have someone who couldn't walk in the king's kingdom around was a signal yes is there but I have to tell you this, but David amount of grace makes this dramatic summons of grace and commands that Lefebvre should the man who is lame in both the streets this man who lives in fearful isolation and loading bar which may mean no pastor, not a nice place to look is brought to David and notice it is David.

Of course, it takes the initiative is not that refurbishment comes to David he can do that is lame in his feet. It is King David in this dramatic summons of grace says no bring him to me.

He can walk to Jerusalem and so he's going to be carded from low the bar the place of no pastor to the capital Jerusalem to meet King David is not magnificent is the truth is a dramatic summons of grace to you and to me dramatic. Although this one was to the courts of King David is insignificant compared to the dramatic summons of grace that God extends to you and me just as much for the sheriff difficult to keep segment for Bishop state 10 times and flexing Mr. M working out quite a bit saliva here. Good night.

Same with aggressive why did I say that just as my favorite chef could never have gone himself to the king being lame and the street so we never could by ourselves which take.

I hope you understand.

With much much worse position than refurbishment of it was yes, we are spiritually disabled were alienated from God were spiritually lost, spiritually bankrupt, but here is the dramatic summons to grace from heaven itself to us because of it. Just a few days ago at Christmas was an angel.

Fear not for behold I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people in front to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, Christ the Lord.

Paul writes but God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in their trespasses, made us alive together with Christ by grace you have been saved. And again, Paul says, and when the goodness and lovingkindness of God is grace. When the lovingkindness of God our Savior. He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit is the drama of the gospel of Jesus Christ is the God in his great love that God in his magnificent binding grace.

Seeing us in a worse place than loading bar seeing us in our sinfulness and the rebellion has reached down to us and calls rebellion is broken. Sinful people like you and me to come to Christ for salvation for transformation and Saul be accepted by God himself and receive eternal life. The dramatic summons to grace the experience that the traumatic fall from grace. The dramatic summons to grace third, the amazing surprise of grace.

Whatever surprise you with his grace.

David is going to surprise but for Bishop with his grace for Bishop Absher could hardly believe it's refurbishment realizes that he doesn't deserve anything from King David. He realizes he just is that when he calls himself. Look at verses six and eight. He calls himself a dead dog. No, he's not presuming on grace is not coming and saying I expect this on the wonderful person you all this to me, David. No he says I am just your servant A dead dog totally worthless.

I don't deserve this.

On that trip from Moody bar to Jerusalem.

He must've wondered what was going to wait was a good to be killed.

Was he going to be imprisoned what was going to happen to them. But David is going to surprise refurbishment with his amazing grace is going to verse seven is going to restore I will restore to you all the land of Saul your father everything that your father had all of the land I will give it to you as grace is much more something even more extraordinary, something even more amazing. Something even more surprising. He tells the grandson of the man that for years trying to kill them and you're going to eat at my table always and I'm going to treat you like one of my own sons. He's going to eat at the king's table at the table of grace. Four times in these 13 verses we read of the table of grace the table. Verse seven of the end of verse seven you shall eat at my table always verse 10, but my favorite chef, your father's grandson, Joe always eat at my table.

Verse 11 the end of verse 11 soma figure sheriff eat at David's table like one of the kings sons verse 13 soma Fellowship lived in Jerusalem, for he ate all was at the king's table values lame in both his feet and a beautiful God surprises us with his amazing grace. It's indescribable isn't it that God should love people like us who have turned her back on him who rebel against what amazing grace that were singing about God should leech down and forgive us of all of your sins.

It's amazing grace. I trust all of us understand that it is by grace that we are saved through faith and this is not around doing. It's a gift of God. We have no entirely through grace entirely 100% of grace were no a child of a new family because God in his grace as a result of sin and the Romans eight if you remember that far back that God doesn't just forgive us something even more surprising. He adopts us into his own family. We would've said that David was an extraordinary man. If you'd send permission for Bishop instead of going to get your all the lion of that your grandfather had no go back in and live there and I really don't want to see you again because in fact you look a little bit like Saul and I did like the look at him.

He kept trying to kill me go away. We decide? Generous of David to do that. We know he made a covenant with Jonathan, but many people go back on the promises that covenants and contracts and bargains broken every day.

Would've said that was remarkable, but David something greater than nice of them to bring you right into my family and every time I sit down at my table for Bishop you are going to be there. Paul says that we are sons of God through faith in Jesus Christ member what John says in first John three verse 10. What kind of love the Father has bestowed upon us that we should be called the children of God is not just a God loves us is not just that God is gracious to us. He adopts us into his family. Would you want every day you went to sit at that table of the dinner. That man refurbishes the grandson of skin.

So he sitting there, just as David because I remember his his father went to show grace to this man. Paul writes, God chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world. He predestined us for adoption through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious what grace is glorious, says Paul in Romans eight were heirs of God, joint heirs with Jesus Christ. All of the father has he gives to us were blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ. This is the amazing surprise of grace that God doesn't just save us.

He doesn't just forgive us. He doesn't just give us eternal life, he adopts us into his family and so we are is precious to him as his own son. Blessing us with every spiritual blessing in Christ you been surprised by God's amazing grace of your receipt grace. You saved, you understand that you for the terrible fall and is only God and his grace we can save you, transform you and adopt you into his eternal family psychologist. How is it one of our greatest battles.

A human being is her insecurity. This gives us tremendous security that I'm a child of the King that I'm part of God's family and God's love for me will never never land is guaranteed by God himself and his son, my Savior, particles, family night we receive Christ as your Savior will you do know that God loves you, but Christ came into this world to die for your sins. He rose again. And if you call on the name of the Lord will be saved. Acute trusted and you will receive this amazing grace to say I'm unworthy of course children were late in fact are more unwarranted than you think you are because God sees every every speck of your sin and of your rebellion. Of course with all unworthy, but God's amazing grace saves us, transforms us as we thought this morning puts the pieces back together and he welcomes us to the Lord's table, to the king's table to table of grace. Can you picture the scene and Davis hustled David and many children then they there's the handsome Absalom were told that Absalom was a very, very handsome man. There's a brilliant Solomon.

There's a beautiful daughter tamer there's arm.

Then there all heirs of the Royal household all entitled because the children of David all entitled to eat at the kings table at the role there and then there's a pause. Then comes the king, the father of the mighty the strong the mind of grace. David himself, and he is carrying the grandson of his former enemy and a wonderful display of grace is carrying refurbishes was lame in both of his feet.

The wonder of God's grace is that once refurbishes disfigured disabled onesies at the table is broken feet is pretty legs are hidden and there he sits on a par with all of the kings sons because God in his grace through David has extended grace to him all on equal footing at the kings table sons of the King, the table of grace do know that will come to the Lord Jesus Christ on equal footing.

All of us. All of the system as is often said that the grind of the cross is a level you Gentiles whatever you from is the wonder of grace.

If you're a follower of David's greater son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

If you've been saved by the grace of God.

You're welcome to this table we call it the Lord's table communion generally invites us to come stop me as not tell the church is Christ himself invites you to partake of this table. If you've received his grace and been born again, he says to you, as we take the bread and as we take the cup.

He says this to and remembrance of me. Remember that everything we are that everything will belongs to our great Savior and Lord of our Lord Jesus Christ at the Lord's table at the kings table. We all receive a binding grace may, as we break bread, no. May we praise our great God and demonstrate this amazing grace.

This kind is this love this forgiveness to others that we who have received his grace this year that this is that this is something I would like to live my own life and the life of Calvary church that we would be a church that displays grace to all, as were surrounded by so many broken people that they too would have the joy of being swept off their feet is aware by the abundant grace of God revealed in our Lord Jesus Christ's. We have a wonderful song which I'm not going to say but I think it's guy and Tim in this cold concrete to the table. We listen carefully. It's about this man refurbishes and of the money to grace of God
