I was waiting. Josh is nowhere to be found is on holiday will say, where you know he was in Charlotte earlier today.

Anyways, he's not hosting the drive which is usually his program. Not today.

Anyway, Dustin Johnson was on the other side of the glass is posting tomorrow from not mistaken like this in the I thought so.

I am the one hosting today and it's a pleasure to do so.

It's a an extended session of Sharon with Darren you guys might hear me occasionally in here with Josh just yakking it up when I come in for what is it like an hour, usually on Thursday. Sometimes we gotta switch that up when I come in for that chunk of the show – I think you'll appreciate this.

A lot of the time I get you laughing about it. My intent is to just throw everything off the rails completely lost comes in. He's got it. He's got his heat, he prepares. Unlike anyone I've ever seen in this industry for a sports radio show.

He's got it's it's like it's like a web chart sort of thing that he draws out in just believe.

Believe it or not, every single segment. Most of words. He says in a given program or plan. And that's the way that's the way Josh likes to prepare that sort of thing. So he's got his his his segments that he likes to do and I just come in like a wrecking ball and a lot of the times all you know I love doing Josh I love when he's clearly established that the topic for a segment and I just interject with something that and try to get everyone on a tangent that was what was it yesterday we were talking about something in the guitar hero and that led to me asking only doing what you think of the police. What's the police's best song or something like that you know and just get everybody worked up, especially when there's a million people here, which isn't the case today.

Just me and you.

Dez.

But I'm looking forward to it. It's gonna be fun. Given the idea that we are Sharon for three hours today we try with the segment that I do again normally come in with Josh. The usual host we try to do and it hasn't been that successful is is like actually share things that I don't feel like I Sharon off with you guys in the triad who might listen to the data going show on the producer of that show, so this is always an adventure jumping from one producing from noon to three and then hopping on this Mike for three minutes. I sat down and asked as hate how much time do you have he's like… Really anything. 32nd and so cold my computer and gather my thoughts, so I apologize for this first segment I never know what to do with it but Sharon is a good start, right Dez correct me if I'm wrong on the number 777-1600 been silly for those who are on your so if listeners want to ask me a question and have me share a little bit.

You're welcome to do so as well. Dez that's the number that they can call or they can tweet at sports triad I'm at Darren Vaught. It's a weird spelling DAR O NVA UG HT but you're certainly welcome to do that I'm an open book today for three hours. As I hope that our guests will be Brian Geisinger of ACC sports.com and the ACC sports journals go to sit down in here with us. For I think in our he had an advanced screening the other night at full frame theater in Durham of the class that saved coach K which is can be part of the ACC networks launch tonight. It airs at 9 PM. We actually just had the executive producer of that John Dall on the David Glenn show sounds like a really really interesting film.

I'm excited to see it so Bee Gees to be with us.

He of course is a very hoops minded analytics minded guy so some off-season basketball. But of course with the ACC sports journals annual football preview magazine on shelves now will talk some gridiron with him as well. Speaking of which, the ACC network both and college football Roddy Jones, former Georgia Tech running back and team captain is going to join us a little bit later this hour to talk football the launch of the network. It's a big day for guys like him some of the inaugural crew that is part of the ACC network as that thing gets started today. It's a Panthers preseason Thursday as they are at Gillette Stadium and look to play the New England Patriots tonight so we'll talk about that a little bit as well. I'm excited Dez do you do you have a let's get this Sharon started. Is there something that you would like to ask me just just make maybe personal maybe philosophical. I feel like we don't get enough of this, that, well, for starters, I want echo.

I agree entirely with you with how you open in terms of Josh Graham is probably the most meticulous planner I've ever been around it comes to putting on the radio show. Like everything you hear the three hours that he's in front of the steering will he's planned out exactly what is going to say from now on that morning on, until we get on the air so so for for that that that's why the show, you know, sounds out know how it is and you know if he would mind having the chaos as he wants to be behind the sternum will we go off the rails over the over the cliff like any of us to get it he just wants control. That's okay if things go wrong, but no documents and just let go. Will let go will see what happens in it, and usually those are that's radio gold segments we do something along those lines, but he needed some some rest like I did. Busy season is about to start here now for the week, until today to so no much-deserved vacation. When I try to do the proper analogy to carry your his steering wheel analogy I said I just plopped down in the passenger seat. Maybe he's Mike Cooper and that's like a maybe not okay thing to do, but I just jump right in and I grabbed the wheel and yank it to the right or the left in either direction. That's what I when I come in here so I am your driver today. Dez, what would you like for me to share as we get things started. What is will I think arty know what your favorite sport is on residence baseball because I know you do a lot of extra baseball stuff outside of its correct duties.

Yeah I would say that's correct I I work a lot with USA baseball is the voice of USA baseball actually recorded a podcast on, but host the official podcast of USA baseball covering the bases check announce modify iTunes Google play whatever you might find those sorts of things a recorded interview earlier this morning so that's of course something that I do a lot of baseball for ESPN3 the ACC network extra.

That's it and I played baseball in an undergrad, so that's for sure. Number one, without a doubt, so that's not a lot of sharing there. I think most people do that right yeah thanks what my question was her second sport with football and basketball. I know you're in Raleigh so hockey is probably out there. What was your second favorite sport to talking the talk I cover hockey is a new one for me. I didn't really grow up with it. So growing up in the mountains of Southwest Virginia was near Virginia Tech so out obviously was a college football fan grew up for a lot of that. Being specifically hokey span.

I played basketball played golf, basketball probably is the correct answer to that. I don't know why ever played golf or why I still do because I hated basketball will go with basketball there and I'm and I'm very much looking forward to having Brian Geisinger in here because he's a smart basketball guy and I find that I often enjoy conversations with people who are way into basketball so that's probably the biggest indicator right yeah I think that covers pretty much my question.

If you would like for me to share anything dial Dez up 777-1600. That's the number for the extent of this three hours of radio. I did mention that instead it is a Panthers preseason Thursday, which is not even a thing a Panthers preseason Thursday is not even a thing but it's Thursday and the Panthers are playing a preseason game.

They happen to be playing the New England Patriots.

I know many of you hate the New England Patriots. What if you had to guess, Dez would be on my list of five things Darren is watching for in tonight's preseason week three game for the Carolina Panthers to have any any any guesses as to what might be on that list what seems like the Panthers are getting shortchanged by national media because no one is in Cameroon pro ball past 20 yards except her. Those of us in the know and the beat writers and reporters that we talk to on a daily from the David Glenn show to drive pretty much all assured us that they have seen Kim uncorking these passes and camp and that none of them seem concerned whatsoever, but I guess the first national question will be as cam Newton shoulder okay shoulder okay I think yes I think so right. We've been given no reason to believe that it is. And so that's it. That's a good thing. As you move on to maybe your second inclination. What would that be me.

There's a there's a lot of starters like key skill position players have not played a single snap for the Panthers typically hasn't played Jack Thompson hasn't played Chris McCaffrey hasn't played Greg Olson so at my second one will be seeing that the full first string offense and defense units out there against the patriots who are mean, let's be real. I patriots to but there the gold standard. I mean a pin of the simple past three years. Just seeing what they don't like against Bill Belichick scheme that'll make me feel little better about you know where we are to give us a better indication because we all know when I can see anybody next week before I come back here for Pittsburgh or beliefs so no one could be out there except for the guys. Cut three days later.

Pretty much are you. Here's how here's how listeners will be able to tell that I've done this before, hosted a radio show, albeit in place of Josh Graham on Darren Vaught. This is the drive here's a tease. If you don't know what a tease is it's it's it's meant to keep you around through the commercial break to hear what I have to say on the other side of right. My five things I'm looking for in the Panthers preseason game tonight.

You did not want to miss this on the other side know I'm kidding I'll tell you them right now.

One camp or two doesn't three get 405 preseason doesn't interest me.

It's dumb, instead, on the other side. I am quite possibly going to slander the pet of Joshua Graham that's next on the drive now show show cam follower and is also discussed why Josh Graham 609 20 body for Josh Graham. This is the drive happy to have you with us. I'm sharing by the way, that's the normal segment sharing with Aaron three hours of so I don't care. Get personal 777-1600 submission with days while we have guests on wait to get on yourself. I'm an open book today as I hope is the case with our next guest on ACC network each day. ACC network college football analyst and former Georgia Tech start Rodney Jones joins the program Raleigh happy launch day, my man, what are your feelings Aaron and up of me on all all you know permit from the day week talking about me being a part of the network and now I knew for a couple weeks and I happen thing the names rollout of people were going to be involved in it.

People that I respect. For a long time and man. You know, in the development over the course of the summer break, although it's really cool to see year and in the solution. Luckily I don't have to be a part of anything live through my doctor bought like everybody else she made you are doing a lot of the heavy lifting documented the network. It started at 7 PM tonight's that starts with that believes the program is called ACC today or it's sort of the in studio show that there to have on a regular basis, but they introduce you to all of that crew are guys there to be in the studio there.

Then following that is the 30 for 30 the class that saved coach K which I'm very interested to see that starts at 9 PM but Roddy week we played audio of Mike Leach, and I'm not sure if you have seen this or heard about this yet in the before we hit the break Mike Leach took to Twitter a couple of nights ago, and just unprovoked came to the defense of cats.

He says he can't understand why why someone would hate cats. It's just like it's it's just a Man, you can't have too big of a problem with it. He's in different I wonder I know you have kids now are you are you a pet person.

Do you have pets.

I got we got your dog so I do not have time.

The one thing I'll say about October. Mike.

That chapter mean man like dogs can get a little Fee if you bother never know what Thinking you can trust the cat hand like that sneaky intermedia and they were like scare you clog it out. I met some cool cat milk. It might day like even a cool cat you're always on the verge of getting by.

I am I'm a little leery, really trust him a dog you can trust Billy Rod wants to know dog you want to be your majority of the time it is something to let you know what a catwalk wants to kill me feel like a creepy creepy. I knew I was dealing with a reasonable person. Thank you Roddy Jones for coming to the defense of dogs is a strong word but I don't I don't understand how someone could prefer a cat to a dog secondarily out of this quote from Mike Leach, is the fact that were get the college football season started this weekend Saturday is Miami and Florida in a big rivalry game. It's kind of a cool season opener yet. Mike Leach is again unprovoked going to Twitter with stuff like this. Is there any other coach in the country that would be could have drafted that sort of tweet days from a team's first game when the guy that you never really know what to do on Twitter now waiting to the only other guy that I can think of that would drop something totally off-the-cuff during game week because it was on his mind on Twitter couple to couple more that, but you like Mike Gundy is always good for soundbite this time of year press conference, but there is no way am I going to go anywhere anywhere near Twitter like that, you know, there are a few others you know Jimbo Fishel from Doug McDavid, Gary D and at a press conference. But again, what is a pretty buttoned up her accounts are pretty buttoned up and so I Think Ln., Kiffin and Mike Leach with my two leaders in the clubhouse in college football gone something I don't think there's any doubt about it, that they might be the only two that would deliver something like that that Mike Leach did going to Twitter unprovoked to defend the cats against people that hates cats what suck some football. Roddy Jones of the ACC network is with this you came out of the Georgia Tech program. They no longer have Paul Johnson at the helm, presumably, or to move to another offense from that triple option under Jeff Collins. I don't think we can assume that it might be pretty early, but what are your long-term impressions of what Jeff Collins is building there and then moving on from this this triple option which you played in an and presumably love you got lots of luck. I like I am my class.

We were the last classic daily so daily.

I was recruited by coach daily. I love dearly support the man that stood for and it was we had to go for me very close file system and I don't mean that in today's profiling traditional profile and under center back. A lot of traditional principles come from a post office where, in large part where were based on trying to get numbers on on the perimeter or trying to actually defend and take advantage of Johnson and the most successful 11 year restriction Georgia Tech history and that includes recent Bobby.and that includes the Bobby Ross years when you want a national shipping trip in 1990 lease Georgia Tech goes in the tank so that the stretch structure success to double-digit win seasons 19 game was incredibly successful. A lot of friends were were all of the success were little were a little ready to move on because Johnson was ready for new challenges. Well, so it was a great time for him to step away and it's a great time for Jeff Collins to be coming in. The guy was completely embraced what it means to be a head coach at the program in 2019 complex social media. He's done a great job of engaging the fan base that a great job of helping to bland the program at Atlanta football team and as we all know the holidays with your recruits nowadays live on social media.

A lot of how they perceive your your school is not what happened Saturday. A lot of it is how they perceive from social media looks out for days and when the loss is almost being secondary. If you can sell a dream on social media by an and at Georgia Tech is legitimate. You have the opportunity to play a plate in a major city in the conference. The hub of the copies really horrible college football, having hosted all the different major events in college work. It's a great city and Jeff Collins is really Ingenuity taken the dog in United Braves game preseason game taken in the Six Flags while white water big waterpark down here all during camp. You're allowed to take a 30 mile radius of 30 miles an Georgia Tech campus that gives you access to the higher you Atlanta and all the things that offer really excited about that part of it to the recruits will, and this is one of the best cities in the country I live here in Atlanta and producing recruits. You can got home and go to Georgia Tech. I think the long-term prognosis is very good. Very exciting now short-term and that's okay but but but I think if college is not a great job early in his tenure, Roddy Jones of the ACC network I kept you to long talking about cats versus dogs but again I appreciate your sentiments on that matter. I do need to go to a break.

So again, happy launch day and thanks so much for the time on the drive here. One final thing for anybody cable provider not yet covering her caring ACC network is a great time to try wanted court cutting object that you have been day free trial so I am waiting for you to go out get your seven day free trial to The program I speak of all the different shows them at seven 7 PM our all for the first 10 minutes of that are going to be sure to call all the networks that got me on their yeah, absolutely. And more than welcome to incorporate the plug. That's Roddy Jones of the ACC network as he mentioned, if you do not currently have a cable provider or otherwise gives you access to the ACC network. A lot of those places have free trials believe YouTube TV is one of those that has that so you can check those out and get the preview, at least for a week or so of the ACC network. On the other side Joe while the play-by-play voice of the Winston-Salem – joint sister listening to the drive this time.

609 20 serious topics. Now back to the drive with Josh Graham back in there and bought it for Josh today on this afternoon edition of the drive. Appreciate Roddy Jones of the ACC network popping in the defendant dogs in the ever important dogs versus cat debate mainly talk a little bit of college football with this happy launch date to him as the ACC network gets kicked off but later this evening is now the voice of the Winston-Salem – Joe while as he usually does show how are you my friend.

I I am excellence. I've got before we get into some movie quotes for you to incorporate in your broadcasts.

I got a check in on a couple of my guys. You know I work with USA baseball and to play-by-play for the collegiate national teams of got a couple of guys dear to my heart and Winston-Salem. At least the latest that I saw they were there.

Andrew Vaughn and Steve Walker both still in town are no notes from that dream lap counter well earlier this year. I remember we have Nick we had pretty cool that all the guys that it can't stop your girl to have each one of those players, all good people and pretty good baseball game that I went to with Josh Graham included steel Walker in the lineup a he might be my favorite collegiate national team guy ever because it's just the best baseball name ever is a great dude it happened. I was shocked to see him in the lineup. I hadn't been paying that much attention so I was delighted when I saw it was in the lineup and it turned out that night. The – got the win. He had a couple of doubles I believe was the player of the game whom you interviewed afterward and it was his birthday like he turned 23 or something like that on that day, so I guess they're all doing pretty well all doing really well actually today with your and Carolina golf cart.

Not only will claim all product and we noted everybody around the league noted. Well you deftly the cream of the crop prospect in the league this year and I'm sure you got you covered them for the collegiate national team, but so much fun to watch because you thought of the ant to the old time baseball you know what your head down and play the game the right way right way, but you have a lot of fun way that you give more that Tim Anderson molding. I really appreciate what Tim Anderson doing with the White Sox informationally baseball.

Trying to Q it will have that from a personality find Internet that okay from the field around first base to get the home on him God in centerfield and and make it look you out there part of him just to have fun with the game and and really enjoy it can't and it made it really watch him and see him play and feedback joy.

On appeal that will need more people like Brian and the guy Chicago fans are really going enjoying it out quite a lot of fun to watch. It is, is God. He plays with big chip on his shoulder a lot of edge to his style of play. So I encourage people in the trying of course to check out the Winston-Salem – while steel Walker is in town. No doubt about it. All right, so Joe I haven't left a ton of time on filling in for Josh on, admittedly terrible at this clock management stuff. What we really do is give you movie quotes and I admire and respect your ability to weave them seamlessly into the flow of your broadcasts. Therefore, the – – you have one of the examples that we play prior to the break just so we can get everybody on the same page with what were doing here fancier.

Tonight all around the lower ball hanging out in their seats were heading onto the Clark and Addison Grill are some of the other great places here in Myrtle Beach to return.com 21@three and one burger from this facility is a tasty burger. I love that one would so good.

Zero. All right, so we normally did you movie lines you sent me. Nine lines earlier today. They're all short, but Drago and Rocky four only has nine lines in the entire film.

What were you saying you wanted me to do with these because they are quote you will lose. I cannot be defeated. I defeat all men soon. I defeat real champion if he dies, he dies I must break you may be the best. He's not a human. He's like a piece of iron I fight to win. For me, for me, and until the end plans with those nine lines start working private car a couple months ago. I don't know if he knew that I was going Josh and he was listening and worth a try and drive a Josh show her my lines anything funny that you do that.

I love all line I think you want one of them. And so if you want to pick one you can I can pick what I was one of my favorite I think you got a human you like a piece of iron at one now, then by all means will use that when I don't like Associates, owners of audience participation on this today. So I think will use that in place of what we've gotten from listeners. He's not a human.

He's like a piece of iron that's your first days what you have for Joe for this week will give you a total of three so I'm going back to the old standby, which is 2007 super bad because there's so many lines there that I think that you could use.

I think we've only got you do like one or two of them out of that movie for the entire season and I'm trying to figure out one that you can say without getting fired or arrested for saying it on the air push the envelope as I'm challenged to I'm looking for like you have one right now that you sure want to give him counsel, scrolling through yeah I've got one. I'm leaning back on. I do a lot of TV shows I find with this with the segments are not movies, but with pop-culture references.

I think I've given you, Michael Scott like two or three times from the office already. Joe were to go with and you can feel free to editorialize to lead into this but there's such a thing as good grief. Just ask Charlie Brown and it's part of a longer text description where he saying that grief isn't always bad, but the quote is there such a thing as good grief.

Just ask Charlie Brown what time there's there's such a thing as good grief. Just ask Charlie Brown that I can be here for that desk to give it up well on all right so that's 2323 Joe then is what you have for Joe Wilde to work and was broadcast hearts are left super bad because there's there's nothing in there that you can point that they wouldn't probably get you fired or in trouble with the SEC sought outside leave alone and go off toward something else I want to come to touch a little bit of a break and give you something that's short and on. On paper it sounds easy, but it might be hard to stick into a game. I want you to do the matching McConnaughhay dazed and confused.

All right, all right, all right yes I'm absolutely a favor but give us your past McConnaughhay when you do that all right. Joe all right, all right, all right. Are you there that's it man, I like it I Joe those of your quotes one of the motley crew. Drago from Rocky for Michael Scott and Matthew McConnaughhay channel to channel all three of them in your next call Joe.

We look forward right that still while play-by-play voice of the Winston Salem – and made that's about as dead as how would you like to play in a golf for some I'm giving you a golf hypothetical while saying, also earlier that I hate golf still play but how man by the place called pizza or just go get a beer with me and it's a fictional character in the case of Drago but Michael Scott also fictional character, but maybe you could get Steve Carell to show up in his stead and play play the character you could do that and then McConnaughhay immediate most interesting dudes around yeah he started around he used to be chick flick exclusive guy romantic comedy act as my preferred terminology exclusive guy and is done some really complicated roles. Since then he would be all right to talk to for sure all you absolutely gonna be great to go out with and just have fun Friday night. You are listening to sports up triad 93.7 Greensboro 101.5 and Winston-Salem 104.9 in High Point in 1045 in Burlington is 609 20 drive with Josh silly voice lady there and thought happily filling in in JG's instead changing the first time I've ever done that I don't like now. Anyway, now that doesn't flow doesn't flow if you recognize my voice. Probably because you have listened to this very station between noon and three and David Glenn hosted the David Glenn show took a couple seconds to catch his breath. At some point so I got a word that's probably what happened.

I regularly produce that program occasionally on here in Josh's place, and once per week share with him as we call it sharing with Darren that's on the table. By the way I'll get personal philosophical is out with a question 777-1600 that one can be saved for later as now in studio. I have Brian Geisinger my God BGC.

It works with his name B.G. and I called him that many many times of the ACC sports Journal and ACC sports.com sports channel 8 which just rolled out last week.

Their very own weekday show made it a week in the triangle 11:50. If you're ever in that part of the state 99. Nine. The family precede the David Glenn show so it's cool to have you guys is new neighbors in that part of the David Glenn shows listening audience are on to have you here sitting down to talk a little off-season hoops so I know we got a couple of things that we want to get to a little bit later ACC football and otherwise but tonight is the launch of the ACC networking network kicks off at seven and then at 9 PM is the ESPN production 30 for 30 the class that saved Coach K.

And actually we had on with DG earlier John Dall who is the executive producer of the main filmmaker that worked on it aside for Jay Bellis who contributed in a lot of ways past his on air on-screen contributions, answering questions and things like that.

I was fascinated by some of the things he said about just how it's funny now and 2019 to look back at it and think that Coach K needed saving write you about the advanced screening experience at full frame theater in Durham what what were your impressions without maybe, maybe, without giving too much away my frankly I'm interested in whatever you have to say about yeah it will first off every chance to see a film over at full frame in Durham go do it.

Pretty cool experience in the middle of American tobacco campus. There's the neat neat setting to see the films we saw a documentary on the former New Orleans Saints with ALS.

Steve Gleason documentary on him because just entitled Gleason right and it was at. It was one of the full frame festival film sister: I saw that there really cool experience present whole festival is really nearly all states also minute interest in the neat setting and what is a cool city and in downtown Durham. I really enjoyed the film.

I mean, I didn't think I didn't think the document was necessarily anything groundbreaking me.

This is a story that's four decades old now right spoiler alert things. The class does in fact save cochair goes on to have large amounts of success, but you took a pretty sore like they took the sort of linear path through the it's the class of 86 is probably a lot of listeners know but it sort of looking as the Johnny Dawkins Jay Bellis Mark gallery as they are in their senior year of high school going into their freshman year at Duke. All the lows that come with a losing record to get get thrashed by you and see they get destroyed by Michael Jordan. They did hold in the ACC tournament. It's funny to see highlights of Wake Forest running up and down and by Duke while sightseeing that Winston-Salem product and this is called because this stuff as much as I love the ACC and I grew up you know going to wait for his basketball games and football games now covering the league.

This is stuff that predates me before I was born and offered it. It comes from its of the time. Which is around when my family first moved Winston-Salem so older people. My family have memories and they told me about this, but it was pretty neat to go beyond the your reading an excerpt in a book or a magazine or hearing a secondhand story is actually see the see the see the photo see the footage see the film see the pictures you see the clips of the old newspaper columns calling for Coach K's head on a platter.

Whatever.

And I thought it was really neat. I thought there were there were good bits of humor in it as you would a woman expect with with Kay and Bill assume you have some self-deprecation in there which I'm a fan of star like that to. And while it does primarily center on the class of 86 it Duke it does also loop in players that came into play with them as well. Younger player. So Tommy Hammacher Quinn Snyder piercing all these amazing basketball mines. 30 years later, getting sit around the table with some wine and some food in and share stories and wrap neat.

It's just a to watch them reminisces cool but also deed system presidency like I do. Quinn Snyder's one of the five best baffle coaches in the world right now Mary is with Tommy Hammacher is the head coach at on Harvard and there's Coach K they're not CJ bills the great basketball mind to.

And so even that you wish you could see all the footage of them hanging out and talking hoops and stuff like that but well worth it. Got me in the mood for basketball season like I'm ready to go now and I definitely give it a gift to give it a glance if you have the chance.

I'm excited to watch it, I begrudgingly did not get an invite to screening and I'm still trying to chase down whoever is responsible for that anyone sent when we had the least.

One unused ticket to get you started on my heart so John Dall, who was mentioned that one of the main filmmakers on it has worked on a lot of other ESPN productions including the Academy award-winning OJ made in America and he talked with DG a little bit earlier today about Jay Bellis's role in his contributions because other than the on-screen interactions. Bellis, who played a major part in in contributing. He talked about letters that it's Coach K had sent him while he was being recruited in just the idea that because Bellis is a West Coast guy and in a world where Mike sous chef ski isn't team USA's basketball coach isn't multi-time national champion.

He isn't Coach K he's Mike sous chef ski what good reason. Does a Jay Bellis out in California have to know who he is at.

So that's a part of the story that really intrigued me, especially as you and I and others incorporated with with David Glenn showing in here. The drive got to know Jay and his love and passion for his time at Duke on that basketball program. Yeah, I mean it's a whole for for better for worse, recruiting is totally different now than it was beckoning to games.

The game). It's the same you're your you're looking for that you're looking for the good players and you're all in the hoopla but yet again the game is a game but your thinking you couldn't you know you and I couldn't do you not go on YouTube and queue up any prospects. Highlights we want week that games are broadcast on television. National TV ESPN now mean you got a million different websites dedicated to covering the stuff including the ACC sports Journal as well. And yeah, this was just a this was just a different time and it's funny to see coach K selling sending letters and telegrams and stuff like that. It your ex at a certain point you're having this sort of resort had to take a leap of faith with both coach the player and employer to coaching and there's even a server. I won't spoil it, but there's a funny anecdote that Phyllis tells about meeting Johnny Dawkins for the first time he never seen Johnny Dawkins. Borges knows this guys you know, one of the best guards the classes to be my teammate when he is in the DC area, he goes to his house to meet him and he's when Dawkins answers the door.

He's basically surprised with the appearance of Johnny Dawkins.

I think he was expecting someone more striking perhaps do you mean bigger. He's yes he is kind of a lanky. He's like yeah where is your brother, you know, he thought, you know, before Pforzheim Williams and RJ Barrett showed up at at Duke this past year just for example, or can rhetoricians I'm willing to like how many times those guys we knew exactly where played together now been on international teams. Nike why BL teams played against one other Bennett camps, all that sort of stuff and yeah I like it that was not the case. 35 years ago. It's funny the Johnny Dawkins bit because I mean how how easy is it to have an image just emblazoned into your mind.

Now just because of scrolling through Twitter you know something as simple as someone's twitter avatar photo that's your impression of them. In a lot of ways, especially if you've never met them in person.

There was no equivalent to that with Johnny Dawkins right answer. You had no reason to know what he looked like, and even if you only watched him play from afar different movement you're not standing face-to-face with him. It could easily be mistaken. And there's just a quick note to this as well.

Like this interesting because bills ended up playing for for cave and he became an assistant so this is a guy that helped on the recruiting shell with coach K when you know what is presumably what is working for him as he's in law school as it is a graduate assistant or whatever, but bills was also again I don't know I don't of the exact timeline of when guys committed and in I don't know the the sequential order with that but the way the document represents it is that more calorie jiggles help recruit him and then in Dawkins came after that as well and you can see, even with these guys got to Durham that while the way these relationships were formed were totally different and far more limited back than that Phyllis even as in an 18-year-old senior in high school was sort of what was a defective recruiter for K helping sort of solidifying for the class. It reminds me that the just the copious amount of letters that you would have to write is a college basketball coach at that time. Yeah, it had to be cumbersome and it reminds me of. If you go to the Dean Smith Center. There's the North Carolina basketball Museum portions of the Trileptal facility there.

It's really true has one of these at Cameron to yeah and so in in Carolina Riverside NC state has one at Reynolds now Dallas is absolutely so they're all really cool and if you're your around the triangle area. Certainly, go check them out at UNC. There is a letter that's posted up and it's from coach K to Michael Jordan when I think it's following Jordan informing sous chef ski that he was going to commit to Caroline. He was yet to go play at North Carolina and it's just a cool thing because it's not a necessary letter and you think about all the work that there there goes into correspondence back then and she sensed he still took the time to write a note just to say all right, that's fine.

Best of luck yeah really good player. The cave and mentions this in with the rights when the C rights to the bill is to like this.

These were boilerplate like these were my own thoughts and you know I type them out.

This wasn't now, I'm sure, to some extent. You gotta have. There's no way everything could be its own unique letter. What I sure like McKay does make does make mention of that actually there's even like a pretty interesting again.

I won't spoil too much here, but those guys are coming in the fall of 82 of the class of 86 that is, they go over to woolen Jim on UNC's campus glassware.

I'm sure a lot of people just now undergrads play pickup there but time like this is where local college players will also go to play play pickup and so Jordan Sam Perkins are in their unit is obviously a sort somewhat of a golden era of UNC basketball is there fresh off a national title and the Duke freshmen are there watching you and see you guys sort of in between games and bills tells a story or maybe smart gallery of Jordan going up during a stoppage and to dunk a basketball in also hitting his head on the side of the pack. Phyllis and Valerie sort of looking at one another thinking like oh wow, what we literally sign up for here. Now we gotta compete against God. I had a meal he went to government Duke and Mr. Cameron was a use playing defense, and again, but I literally saw the sign Williamson hit his head on blackboard after I block a shot against Princeton, so again games.

The game players are different, but in the methods which they connect and interact.

There are different too, but it is using C out some of the stuff as the strengths there are still transcendent players. You know what I mean it now as there were than to use by Geisinger of the ACC sports Journal and ACC sports.com as well as sports and ladies hanging out for an extensive period. During this edition of the drive. I'm there and thought filling in for Josh Graham on the other side more hoops with PG that's next.

I buy my very exact clock.

It's 5 o'clock and 18 seconds 19 seconds 20. That means it's time for the five things at five right size: sorry I've been gone for, but it was worth more than that there's supposed to build up more that there thanks thanks lady with a weird echo for reinforcing what time it is 55 top five stories I will start your number you're supposed to start at number five and I'm having to do a little moving around and just read five so it will that's what I like to hear.

I not to complicate your life anymore that we got some audio associated with this one. NBA player voice right says NBA teams are blackballing superstar Carmelo Anthony. This is the guy that once a member of the Houston Rockets really had to cut his career short because he was deathly afraid of getting on an airplane and it just wasn't gonna work out, and most recently seen playing an ice cubes big three so that was right for us blackballing the same it is that you know you like me don't talk like ration like that but he has no and he was the game and not allowing the player for them to actually just make the make a decision on the agreement that he's not all of us here that play that game at the highest level know how good Mello is and we know that there's no way that the signs you another question is like the blonde is like he's defacing was the players brother back to my guy like that is a good basketball they fit around the article threes at the end of the day.

This is like maybe Carmelo can be Jared Dudley 11. The thing is if that's the case that's like.

That's not the point. You need this guy to win to win a 1011 or make wide-open reads which are doubly got does better than Carmelo Anthony and like as far as like that look on my Carmelo.

He seems to be a pretty good guy and some of the does a lot for for for the communities from Baltimore gives back seems to be pretty hands-on tablet all that stuff is great like let's also remember media day two years ago with Oakland city thunder when some intrepid reporter asked him if he would be open to coming off the bench literally just scoffed and started openly laughing and exactly receptive to a role that didn't include pay. I'm starting, I get a use of time to post a 25% usage rate or whatever to I had to deal with when it's fans asked me this on occasion to why have they not as a white wife in the morning. Will Anthony and like I say it like this change of years ago.

Currently things is not just is not a winning NBA basketball player, there's no number out there that you can point to and say this guy helps you win the battle. It just doesn't happen quite off the court defensively is not an efficient offense of player so yeah I mean, dear WSE is both of those things and that's why he is on this roster printed at a minimum salary and Carmelo Anthony. As you know, not any of you anymore go to China goes for 60 points a game in China like you can totally do that if you also love watching, but like ours winning battle games sky doesn't do anything to move the needle in the right direction is what number will you know where Carmelo besides Syracuse. It's the only place he has one basketball game and it's wearing USA across his chest, right Kimberly Walker this start of team USA yelp and the guys in the red white and blue the good guys defeated Australia this morning in front of a record crowd of 51,000 and looking Melbourne baby in Melbourne. It looked why they got to cheer on their their heroes Joan Ingalls development Padova who has a signature shoe over there. Also got Aaron Baines when the angel knows of course a long embrace with the pot of probability" so they spent a lot of time together in San Antonio is the only dude on this team USA roster with multiple All-Star appearances. How bad is it.

It's like I'm still awesome right like that's the still amazing, they wouldn't it be they be to get us next and will see how they play confirm a time. There are some real questions with this roster but like what they lack in sort of like defined star power in terms of all NBA selections and in all and All-Star rosters can was the only godlike thought of the Mitchell's a really good young player so's Jason Tatum this multimillion All-Star roster the season he's on the team.

Brooke Lopez is like redefining the center position mouse turners and all NBA defensive level center like they have really really good players on what you can, was the sort of the real one efficient like long-range shot creator that they have any data point you shot Katie scored 23.0 combating cooking. It looked like it was like a Thursday night in uptown Charlotte February 10 20 shots off. I not impressed email the mediator straight like think of all the USA team.

We got something allowed pros and narrative with a plague of this team. All teams would be 15 x 15+ even though it seemed like all of them.

I don't even want to watch them. I think part of it is the timeslots are not friendly they play again. I think like Friday night at midnight.

Not that, not friendly, but the part of this too is a wondrous one generation of players that sort of like grew up with that they grew along with coach keeping the coaches starting to sexual conflict is old now right like Ron Paul, Carmelo Anthony, like those dudes don't play. You know they have to take it they have to really like dial it back in place 70 games next NBA season into the gutter member, even guys like Gaza, Kevin directly. Thompson got hurt at the end of the season here and then weekly. I'm sure you guys talk about this on the drive that's like, think about how much money changed handsomely. Players change teams this off-season really none of those guys that are playing on this roster. I find big deals remove teams like those guys including Ben Simmons, who would've been on the Australian team agree to a big extension that will kick in until the following season, but like one of those guys.

Chris Milton granted he signed a big deal he's with team USA acid Brooke Lopez, like a lot of guys because this is a leak change teams just certain guys were essentially off-limits almost put pen to paper and the risk becomes even greater at a time when I want to. Guys are looking to risk that anyone but I realize like I like into deep with NBA hip sternness because I'm like well Derek like to play more than 2 1/2 minutes last night and I'm guessing you guys don't care at all about their play more than three minutes last night. I love it this morning. Dez MLO three trace if it's all right see if the voice lady was a sentient being.

She would've said trace because I said either way were talking more basketball with this headline.

BJ did you see the street art in Indianapolis depicting ladybird tattoo smock after receiving some indigestion will call it from birds party about the idea that he is a tattoo guy doesn't want to be one said she would remove all the tattoos from Larry Bird's mural in Fountain Square except for the script Indiana on his left forearm in accordance with the basketball legends request quote. This is another human being that is obviously not liking it. She told the Indystar if he was happy and thought it was funny that's a different story.

Why I shame on Larry. Larry Bird said-someone's artistic freedom here.

Nothing says Street like Larry Bird in LA when I think/think hard and I think Saturday I Larry Larry I think the hick from French lick like that you should not you should. It's important that an artist is having to go back to to their creation and in chains. The workings of it that this is something that you shouldest appreciate it standalone to be cool not saying you gotta be honored by I know I would be if I were Larry Bird personally but like someone that loves art almost as much. I love basketball like let it be. Let agree. This should be cool and fun we just enjoy this like I can't believe the thing that had to be altered I Larry is such a ubiquitous icon in the state of Indiana should be used to this sort of thing honored by, and it's also like Joel smock the street artist had depicted him tattoos wearing like his Miscue and baggy pants are that we have the same issue because it worries me. That's a person. There are some potentially problematic elements of this right.

There are, I'm not happy that all of the tattoos are to be removed if I was him, though the fornicating bunny rabbits on his right forearm like me.

I get it. All the other stuff you cardinal in your face, you connect that this is Hoosier across her throat. That's fine as our unsafe slavery. I agree this to say that because I don't have to say that you just hit the number, but I just awful with the format of the show have for number 20. We talked about this earlier of the Carolina Panthers has stated the candidate will start at quarterback tonight in New England against the patriots and their third preseason game, you know, this is the one for starters participate, no scams done whatever they need to see him do who knows what that is. You know what Kyle Allen's dedicated camera needs to prove himself in a preseason game.

I it blows my mind. BJ Urey, lifelong Panthers fan and I thought that was the case you still room for the team. Sometimes responsibilities can camp away from tuning in for a lot of NFL on the same way, I still make time for most Kyle Allen as a Panthers fan I'm so I'm only sort of half of the family. I root for them because a producer they wanted North Carolina and I root for the show for us when they are you comfortable with Kyle Allen is a backup quarterback who is that no people are not happy with any of the guide Taylor Heidi Cannon Kyle Allen yeah exactly these people will Greer be maybe ends up being good now not comfortable with any of these guys once again come down to like you know of patchwork offense of line try to protect the the undervalued and underappreciated camera Newton for though for the for the Panthers's gotta stay healthy. Dez, I have no idea what number thought were on, but I hear that the music is over so I feel like I need to squeeze into more things to complete our five things at five. Can you do these things for me.

Dez 10 euro number one so one night we just do me this play Mike Leach talking about cats and then react to that as doctrine that can be number one, perfect. The whole Michael Mike Leach, I would hear them talk about cats and I want to hear Doc Rivers thoughts last night about Somebody I can remember.

Somebody said that passing it on one of the guy cats you know somebody really hates cats and I never figured that one out. I never figured, me and you know how close relationships and why they would value different about cats was just never understood how it Could accelerate that much animosity coming to me it's just a Squirrel. It's just it's just like oh Doc, what you think the dock I got to know this is Darren bottom filling in for Josh Graham okay on the drive on on on the sports of Triad Bee Gees here as well as a spry Geisinger you can just call and be geophysical. Can I get it okay Doc, would you like cats do you hate cats will really like this but he likes each other until things get tough to find out what kind of team you have there. And that's the way to go where the defense of document and then played lick defense of Scotch sampling these young guys.

Blake, I'll tell you that right now is like was like everyone would blame Blake for everything and is not open for everything this Blake like cats just bought cats. What is it called albino tiger with no somebody on Johnson, but it's also Doc Rivers, in a way that's gotten them in my day. I'm glad we can make that happen for you BZ snowflakes fall personally. Several Blake's fault, never Blake's phone right down on the court and put it in your wallet so that you can pull it out and realize that it's never Blake's fault. It's not his fault. Chris is going to step up just above the what brought you back. I'm wondering Dez, do you have like a just coached a game Doc Rivers. That's just like hair harassing us know when it was real close. One team pulled together a team comes apart forcefully newsletter to become sport lessons. The Celtics we never lost a series with all five of my guys without all five of them all. They look applicable in doing so you know about the McMillan lapse or defense or something. I have successfully taken this totally off the rails as fill-in host for Josh Graham. Mr. Blake's we probably should go ahead and do that. Those were the five things five at 5:17 PM those are the five things at five. You are welcome sports listening audience for the greater Triad area under thought filling in for Josh Graham. My thanks BJ for stopping in for a little over an hour you held out an hour for the Doc Rivers in person well worth it well worth it were to hit a break and then try to finish up some sports radio for the day here on the drive up there not filling in for Josh Graham
