I've had such a delightful week watching some documentaries coming through some books I mention I have Malcolm Gladwell's newest talking with strangers, but I also have sought a bomb authored by our next guest. One of the best defensive minds in the history of the sport. One of the more entertaining follows. Among football coaches on twitter and somebody that I been wanting to talk to for some time now it's Wade Phillips with us. The book again son of bomb.

It's chocked with a ton of great football stories from his dad, bum Phillips and Earl Campbell to his days coaching. Nowadays in the NFL Coach Phillips give me a sense for those who don't know what your campaign. Campaign is will you know I just wonder that we need to stop the government thereby okay the right thing to do is stop and I carried it over to save the old people so feel free to stop the virus you see the old people so I think it will be great if we go have some fun on the show because I think fun is what we need right now. But I also interested a lot of things regarding football in today's game. How much do you think the lack of OTA's if they are canceled can hurt a team like the Panthers with the new head coach and also a team with the new quarterback in Teddy Bridgewater. We had to strike when you OTA Texans first gone there and so the new team situation good things that happen quickly. They were 31st in the league in and when I went there we didn't have OTA. We had a new staff defense lien. We waited out second in the leg and lay out went well.

Within never done so, good things can come out of it. You are teaching aggression is the very good that's the key. You can take part by your system or what you're doing and then utilize their talents quickly you'll get it done is on twitter at son of bomb I saw you tweet this this week just picked up my Republican Republic barbecue great to be back in Texas now. I've been all across the country eating barbecue left and right. I had some in Houston a few months ago and in North Carolina. We got our own special kind of barbecue. What's the best barbecue you've ever had, North Carolina. What about the best state see. Everybody remembers the best steak they've ever had for me it was in Bird city, Kansas middle nowhere to steak and overlapped over the sides of the plate. What sticks out to Wade Phillips why your mom your back on the ground that big mediator. I don't know where we can cook up some pretty good so I like to grow them out there and they taste pretty good to me.

So we Phillips is with us here is on twitter at son of bomb. It's also the name of this book that you certainly can enjoy it's available where books are sold. How surprised are you that cam Newton is still available available based on the experiences you had against him. Yeah, I'm surprised well you know you you know he's such a great player and even though we had to use in the dominant repeatedly trim his head injury and maybe that's whatever by looking at that I think is a winner I think is a guided likewise. So we called mankind to go through the same thing you know trying to change and like he was hurt and so forth. And then into that won the Super Bowl so I wouldn't put it past him what sticks out to you those two weeks and crap you get the extra week preparing for cam in the Super Bowl.

What sticks out to you as the defensive coordinator that eventually had more success against Camden anyone had that your what what stood out to you those two weeks. Remember we had a pretty good. Oh yeah we beat him up pretty good come from Brady only play that game we we get Tom Brady 24 times in the game which somebody said it was most everybody court not just him, but any quarterback that had been hit in the game in the last 10 years so we had a pretty good Russian course we got seven fax and also I meant in our rush was that that pain was exceptional a lot to do with it and and we played really good to get the wrong way every 3.3 against one of that year which is probably the best and and great running game with the court. The running game forth from the probe also we Phillips witnesses box on a bomb writing a book with stories about your dad.

What lessons did you most want to express to readers that you would learn from life certainly also wanted to do it for coaches and let them know what, what coaching is what real coaching is made and chapter in their think is the second chapter the fifth coaching invention that and that's what he taught me to coaching and gripe about star coaching and also look at makes a mistake I didn't do well and you start gripe and you know yak yak yak that well the reason they didn't do well you didn't teaching and most for you teaching the night before. That would make you more successful. So you all players because they don't like long term coaching part would help them mindset I think is important that these do you have about coaching nowadays and how it's changed versus when you coached two decades ago. Acumen three or four decades ago yeah 42 years, all smokers that are screaming for making mistakes and then in one chapters, and there is a mistake for my and that's what I've always preached with the players to get everything taught within a work yard and get everything taught. In place are you going to worry about mistakes that you make her mine and I think they play harder.

What stands out to you about the Panthers new quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. I hate when I would try to last year when out with the lamb because he had come in threes, and gainful know much about it now. Matt knew about them, in which but without great but a lot of good things, you know, under pressure is not a runner but you know he's been a good system. Any talented know what you got screwed over here and show me a lot about what trying to stop quarterbacks. Wade what sticks out to you about how the gains changed over the last decade exactly quarterback click.

It seems like it's it's been it's never been this good. This easy. Of course are being aided by rule changes college offenses being implemented more more but also you're talking about running into Malcolm Gladwell short while ago. 10,000 hours more quarterback camps. More guys were more prepared and again the high school. What have you seen where have you noticed the quality of quarterback play improving more and more as time is going to get the rain forests are wide open college men when you get a quarterback you want to get out-of-control football one out her phone about me their phone about so much. I think they're getting better. There is not leaving differences that they never flow accurately you get got flow accurately you can get it to read defenses and homes is a great example.

Summing you know is really accurate quarterback and you know he's not. I'm truly not graded rate differences yet, but he likes to play ball so well.

He said this last coach he said last year to three weeks ago that halfway through this past season. That's when he first started to learn how to read defenses yeah I believe that you know book of the guys are great to me that Brett Favre fell about this your normal guy coming out exceptional but still going to ball so much and I know how to emulate colleges so kids are going to ball now more more more. You bound to get better players.

The more you do something get his book son Obama it is Philip spending time with us here you have a go to karaoke song.

I'm not big on karaoke every good reason my boy.

But if you work in the same when when when we sing in here saying if you had to be a good story before you go when you're scouting you have to go all over the place. You keep an eye on claims he can keep an eye on the state of Texas got to say hi. I keep an eye all across the country was going on the Council but do you have a good story or a prospect that sticks out being in the southeast. Obviously football so big down here. State of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, anything stick out over the years recruiting works is me looking at prospects over the last few decades. In this area. Yeah what I like to go running back pretty good. Dr. Landon George Rogers. He was really something. It was a rookie of the year. We gradually meant and he was a rookie of the year and really great great clerk so now there was a gap, North Carolina played linebacker the same time that we didn't end up taking Lawrence Taylor yeah you are pretty darn good as well and I hope you're finding ways to be productive amid a difficult time.

I think your twitter handle your book are good ways to put smiles on faces. And that's exactly what we need in times like this. Appreciate the time Wade it's appreciated good, vomit if they read the book in question and answer when I don't it. I have the best. Thanks thanks way that is Wade Phillips on Twitter at son of bomb very modest and unassuming yet Wheatley did a nice job against the Panthers. We did a nice job against I'd say they did to Bob Miller getting around the edge and winning Super Bowl L. That's pretty cool man all right. I think that the coronavirus pandemic is going to affect the Carolina Panthers more than any other NFL thing. I believe that in a sports hub Time Machine. Our next
