Here's your host Rodney Gilmore how do you find good cheap used car as the Christian Car Guy or I get a number of emails from folks who allow me to help them with all sorts of automotive comfort concerns and I really really do appreciate those a good deal of those emails were aimed at this very question. How do I find a good cheap used car. My son has a situation my granddaughter.

I have a nephew know they need to buy a car under $2000. How you do so, working to go on a quest to go on a quest with my five basics and your phone calls on how to get behind how you find that good cheap used car to start off to just jump right on in there, and number one the number one base when you head off on a quest like this, especially when there about a thousand folks right this minute in your own town. They're trying to do exactly the same to the number one basic square.

It really is a specific faithful prayer and I got I got to tell you a story that back when I was in the Chrysler business in Marksville one day. Not terribly long ago. Really, I had a friend call me a good friend that I taught Sunday school where then he said Robbie my son is looking for and he went on to describe the most unusual vehicle I've ever heard in my entire life, but he was so specific, he said he wants to door Cherokee now just think in your own mind how many two-door Cherokees of you receiving your whole life, mail carriers, you saw some of those with right hand drive but not too many two-door Cherokees not talk about the square about Turkey and then he wanted to be a five-speed and unthinkable hours that Annie wanted to be four-wheel-drive and it has to be read and I'm listening to this and I'm thinking oh my word. I mean I probably only made to those in the entire history of the Cherokee product and there's probably on the West Coast somewhere I can imagine ever finding such thing, but I said well I'll see what I can do but is he praying about that, you know, Pete, because this is Hugh Jesus to take some real parenting goes always been praying about it for some time. Robbie he really believes God has this car for well if I hadn't lived through this to see it with my own eyes I never would. I never would've believed I still almost don't believe it is this day I had.

I think it might be easier to part the Red Sea become up with this car, but that very afternoon he called me that morning and within five or six hours here it came when it rolled onto the car lot. I was actually standing in the front looking up when I said oh my word, that's a two door red Jeep Cherokee.

It could be a straight drive. You look at their guess what, it couldn't be four-wheel-drive. Oh yes it what you think. We traded for Jerry we did. We traded for the and my friend he got that car so as I'm saying. The number one basic if you're looking for something that is hard to find just what God has a plan for you, but it takes what my friends son had faithfully believed God would supply the new exactly what he wanted and I'm sure he was very specific. Years ago, he'd he'd was transitioning out of one car still in college needed a car. We don't have much money at $2000 cash money to spend. That's all he had and we searching searching searching the one car would show up we go immediately look at it another car would show up well. Finally, here is this 2001 Pontiac Grand Am with 90,000 miles on you see that show up on Craigslist and you need to be the first person to call him to tell you that car will not last. So were watching Craigslist every hour.

Literally every hour we go check it and so here's this car 2001 Grand Am 90,000 miles. I call the folks they said will yeah yeah we would you're the first person to call us a great. When can we come see it and they said well we can't be back from work till like 3 o'clock this afternoon. I said we will be there 245 waiting on you and that's exactly what we did and when we we were the first people to get their and as soon as he saw the car.

It was in fact a 2001 with 90,000 miles on it, but it needed hubcaps and needed a few other things and and so we'll talk about that story little bit later to bring out some other issues but the point is the reason he got that car. Besides prayer was that he persistently was looking for. In other words, he had to go to Craigslist or eBay.

Wherever you're going to look at the newspaper whatever situation I highly recommend Craigslist, not for a lot of the but for this specific need. Guess what everybody's doing it.

It's free and there's a lot of cheap cars there but you gotta go looking all the time when it's there be the first to call be the first to shut because the person yet does not realize what they have. Once they've had 4000 phone calls on that card than the price starts going to mean a big oh wow I didn't know I had some and so they get.

But if you're one of the first people shop you get it while they still have something like that in mind, which brings up number two base cash helps your offer to register ours like you words but the point is is if you're going to come by car like that. Hopefully you've got cash money don't don't use a check bring cash because when you're in a business they look.

I can give you and Mrs. what happened in that particular car situation and I'll illustrate several points, but because my son had the money. When we made an offer. We said look what we have the money right now we can go right on down to the DMV and we can give you cash they need to be very very careful with cash and only give it to him must have the title you don't want to necessarily flashes because you wanted to rob but it is important I think to have the people understand that you are in a position to buy the car right now that you're in a position to give them cash because again, the whole reason to sell this car if I'm so into thousand dollar car why my doing that I need the money and not check takes days or it might take you know, whatever. The time I would much rather see cash.

It makes me more comfortable than that.

You know absolutely and you know you don't have to like say that there's that beer. They don't know you and you give them a check. It is the Tennessee if they think somebody might be on the way that has cash in her pocket but you won't hold think they would rather have the cash now before we get this more. Those others, we will request one more time that you call him with the time that you had a very specific prayer. God came through one of those times that you are like Peter, you're like the people waiting on Peter wondering how did this happen. I can't believe it. I have one that is another story. I will share real quick before we get on the deductible situation as it this man came in and he said the Lord is told me that he's going to give me a car and he told me to come see you on the Chrysler deal. I did not I we we were the dealer but I did have cars to just give people certainly didn't have a Jesus's labor love ministry at this point in time, but this man had great expectations he wanted. Avante wanted this and that and it was in heat was like you're supposed to give me a car and any I heard his story and it was a real legitimate need, but I couldn't give the man a car but I did know that there were some ministries out there and I knew there were some organizations in this case did power I said you know they have certain programs that they do for people that have a real legitimate need, and you might go contact them and I gave him a list of three or four and sent them off well.

It wasn't but a few hours later and made them the next morning, but there I was like the people waiting on this man.

He's got a check from Duke Power for like $6000 and there bought him there, but now they they send it back to me to buy the call was there was another of those things were man this is phenomenal. Love is just the man prayed in the and he obviously had this relationship with God and God gave him a car and I guess I did have something to do it at the time I was Jerry. There's a real need going on right now about this deductible thing we need to talk about the absolutely and it is something that I've I've really been having come to our shop a lot with people will be in an accident will as the gentleman earlier called unit is been the economies been tough on a lot of people in understand that and and everybody is certainly feeling that one of the ways that people have looked to try to save a few dollars is under deductible amount and the deductible is if you carry collision insurance are comprehensive is the part that you have to pay in case you use that insurance will used to be 100 Ali coming I can remember. Older people come in and still have $50 deductible and hundred dollar to 5250 was always sort of the standard will over the course of time just for people trying to save some money, have went to the $500 deductible and is not uncommon to have thousand dollar deductible will the concern I see on my end of it because I see the people that are in a crisis. When the wind when they're needing to use insurance they have saved maybe 20, $30 on premiums and if they really needed that money just imagine what it would be like to think that they had to come up with $500 or thousand dollars is almost virtually impossible for him and that's what's happening at end, and I understand the need to try to save a little bit of money but is just important to get counsel talk to somebody in a body shop. I mean we would be more than happy to sit down and talk to somebody about deductible and and and that that the pitfalls of ship to watch also sit down with your agent. A lot of times, and any notes. Some agents will steer you those higher deductibles because what they're trying to do their trying to be competitive in the market. They know they can get that your payments down to whatever an online service may be in and so there there encourage you to go with his higher deductibles.

But if you have a hard time making those payments for coverage try to save $25 to cost you $50 an accident. I mean, we have people come in they can even use their insurance because her deductible so high that I have that happen right before Christmas. I told the story before I'm here at labor love request came in for single mom the week before Christmas in her car been wracked payments on it were really almost more than she could afford to begin with just the monthly payments, but the deductible was so high on her insurance she couldn't afford to fix the car. It was broken down in her driveway. She could get to work to make the money to make the payments even have Christmas for her family because she found herself in this position. If you are budget is so tight that you can't afford $1000 deductible, or $500 deductible. You really have no choice but to go on to make the extra premium so that you really the reason for insurance is to protect yourself against unforeseeable financial you know situations that you cannot handle and if you can't handle $1000 out of your checking account right now you gotta have the coverage to cover the obsolete knowing when we even have customers come in who can't like say they can't use their insurance so were making repairs to the get the vehicle inspected and get back on the road for $100 couple hundred dollars getting things lined up so there so there safe in the functioning but the point is that we just trying to understand that just look long term because nobody expects that through the column accident. Nobody expects to be in a in an automobile accident. Nobody expects to have the carb analyze.

Nobody expects to be in the situation with a need to go to a body shop but just look to make sure that you are getting yourself coverage because that's what insurance is supposed to be doing is protecting you as you said and you know, even to the point and this is sort of goes to a little bit awfulness on the rabbit trail but a lot of people have over time when we had somebody in the shop this past week of this was that that the situation they were in weren't Macon and they allow their insurance to lapse. So the finance committee picked up the insurance and they just added it to their monthly payments with he didn't realize that insurance was only covering the finance company finance company so they been paying on the vehicle for two years, they total Allstate and it is paid off and said all that money, they didn't pay any and was down.

I mean those of the situation is that so did you get counsel just got a get counsel just talk to somebody and make sure that you're covered. And speaking of counsel, here we go. We got still have two more of our five basic son Brian a good cheap used car. We want to we want to get to the next one. Number four is pedigree overproduced or maintained over manufacturer. In other words, a lot of people say why need a Honda I need a Toyota and they don't realize that just because it's a Honda or Toyota does not mean that car is well taken care of and you might find a Hyundai or or whatever that is actually a better car than that Honda or Toyota because the way the people took care of it. Now it's true that most people it on Honda's attorney to take better care of Karsten than most general but still you got a look at a car just because it's a Honda and I see this all the time people say what I can buy this Honda but it has a bad radiator I can buy this key and it runs fine will let me think through that a minute I mean the reason why the Honda has the problem of the radiators that the people didn't change the antifreeze in and so if the rest if that part of the car is gone bad. What else might you be looking at and and those are always things that I concern myself if something is already wrong with the car and that's not a car that's on my list is something I want to buy because that's an indication of something that wasn't maintained on the car properly. To begin with so when I say pedigree overproduced or what I'm saying is, how was that car was just car baby was and how was it driven when you're at the people's house look around how they live, how they take care of their stuff look at the car in this. It sounds funny but I was looked at the gauges. If there was a lot of dust in the gauges it died in life but if it was clean looking into the gauges.

I don't know what it is but that this would give me the warm fuzzy feeling of this Karsten better taken care of consummate is meticulous enough to wipe that dust on the gauges.

I mean these people took care of their cars to other things and then number five which is near and dear to Jerry's heart is the use the test ride to drive home a bargain. This is so, so very, very important. You cannot over test drive a car as far as I'm concerned if the people allow you to take it on extended test drive.

Good news is, nobody can bite out from underneath you while you're out in it and gently they will give you a chance to buy when you get back.

But while you're out there take it by body shop or take it by. Upon the placement date. A body shop's a great place right Jerry because you guys know when a car is been written a look is a few things you look at does take but a moment and you'll know the condition of the vehicle.

We may think in a righteous way. That's not right, but our relationship with our kids is actually more important than any other part. Think about how Jesus put this in Revelation 320 said, behold, I stand at the door and knock.

If anyone hears my voice listen to that careful. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and I'll dine with him and him with me.

God is a relational God. Yes, there's rules those roles are the point you to Jesus.

Yes, there are things we can do to show we love Jesus but that's the point.

After Jesus upgrade earthly father points his child to the heavenly father and that relationship not just that they know the 10 Commandments and all that stuff but that they get that that your children can have a relationship they can hear Jesus's voice and they can go in and they consult with me and that's the amazing part of what we get to see through our pedigree, like my father before me.
