This is the Adam Gold show Chick-fil-A peach bowl. The Chick-fil-A kickoff classic which is by the way, the nation's longest running kickoff game and re-inventor of the neutral site season opener that has paved the way for blockbuster games on opening weekend. I got that right from the parental job that you earn money that you don't what you did. I thank you very much. Give my son because he is.

He devours them all the time earlier today I thought I was talking with the man with the best job in sports, was talking to Bill Hancock, Executive Director of the college football player and then I realized through our conversation that you actually have the best job was because you just spent the whether this matters not, you just spent what two weeks you went to Wimbledon in the open championship that we were. That's where I will add a great memorable trip with my five-year-old grandson my son-in-law and my wife.

It was truly remarkable. The whether the open could get any better than the hardest Wimbledon they had on record right men's finals and we are safe in our travels we able to stay in St. Andrews. The little town to walk around. It was God blessed us with 10 beautiful days memories from my five-year-old grandson mainly, but also for my wife and son. What you where you set a court now.

We were we were.

Thank God we were up under the shade. Across from the Royal box so it was, it was the hottest day Wimbledon sad and people were walking out of there just read some right portage aware that's what I need to know, get dressed for Wimbledon. I did have long pants on and I had a golf shirt on things of Masters golf shirt so but it was it was truly sensational robust got home late Tuesday night. Wednesday went to SEC media days is good to have a home game in college football right Hall of Fame in Atlanta and then flew up here late last night to come visit with you carries your big man you have in your know now that is not 99.9 the fan, it's Adam Gold on that I will think it is amazing what you've done where you come from you. Maybe the most important guy like you can wear those yellow she likes.

Thank you very much. I Saturday, September 3, you have George R and then Monday, September 50 got Clemson, Georgia Tech. You guys have built such a brand with these preseason games in all you do. Just talk to me about where this is an where were going forward. Yeah, great points. Great question. You know to have three games this year with the CFP semi-found out into the we announce the sellout two weeks ago record sellout to have George Oregon.

Phil still has order number 10 what Georgia number three sellout announced yesterday and into fall that up Monday night with number five Clemson against Georgia Tech and Mercedes-Benz stayed to start kickoff the ACC season and unopposed in the slot again. We have sold out that game as well.

Sold out that game exclusive just announced the sellout early release may not be out yet. Adam Gold is getting a look at what we were sold out all three of our games. Five of the six teams playing in the top 10.

These three games are three of the top six conventions in Atlanta which is the fourth largest convention time in United States over hundred million dollars of economic impact $6 million in sales tax will wound our community will donate more than $6 million this year, which is a record for us and worthy. Most charitable organization in the country out of 44 bowls so it's going to truly be a record season for us so were blessed. Right what you guys. It was special and the brand that you have built a special and when people look at the landscape of college football, it always seems to come back with two who cares about the bolts when you hear that, why should people care about what I care most is us being able to use football to get back we donated $60 million since 2002 through college football games.

We give $20 million to children's healthcare of Atlanta to start the peach bowl Legacy fund to fund now seven trials that have 12 kids in two eradicate childhood cancer. That's what I care about what other people say don't bother me. We control we control were to get back to college football by moving the college qualified plan of building it, sustaining it to get back you know $60 million since 2002. Working to create opportunities for student athletes to have experiences like listening to Congressman Lewis and CT Vivian investor young and Ebenezer Baptist Church here about civil rights were to take him through the cultural Hall of Fame and have them dream about being inducted and that all things a Hall of Famer 15 years from now to aspire to be that working to give fans a unique first class experience or tailgate towns through our experience at the Mercedes-Benz stayed so you know you control what you can control and hopefully we can put our arms somehow around what's going on in college football make it better and forward. I have some concerns big time about what's going on. I think our kickoff games are in danger of not existing in the future.

That's okay. If that's what's best for college football to get to those concerns. In a second. I just want to know. Should NC State fans already be booking hotels for New Year's Eve in Atlanta capital financial advisory group. We are talking retirement coach. Let's say you have more than $1 million balance in my 401(k) revelations. Thanks very much. How can I can actually come back and bite me because in this is a thing that we did we get the Mirage receiver Rogers of the desert before you see what's what. Her head was not there when your financial garage is thinking that that total balance in your 401(k) or IRA is yours. We have two people to want to get a hold of her two uncles uncle North Carolina and Uncle Sam write both of you to do some damage to the balance depending on what kind of other income you have lose 40% of your value. So if you're looking at a million-dollar IRA. Maybe it's only worth 6000 you. So how do we get around is what you'll get around it could end up in jail.

If you try to do that.

What you can do tax planning to minimize the effect of taxation into the future.

The tax train is coming out and we need to make sure to minimize the effect of the derailment of a financial accountant for the next 10 people will do it at no cost relegation put together your very own tax and retirement .800 661-7383 or text Adam to 21000 per goat beetroot to God's ears. I'll save them a lot of hotel rooms are and obviously Dave Doran's good friend in NC states where my heart is I owe them a debt of gratitude for my education letting me start my life debt free. So many good Wolfpack fans out there that I love so good to me but this is the year for NC state with who they have coming back to great coordinators. The quarterback that's one of the best in the country. Defense is really strong. This is the year for NC State know. Obviously I refer NC State.

I root for Dave Doran.

I refer other coaches. More so the roofer programs gotta be neutral but would love to find a way if NC State could get to our ballgame before I retire I have in the kickoff game once, but the they never been in our ballgame and they been our peach bowl in history right. More times than I think anybody would Clemson so it be great in my career. Over the next few years. There evidencing state very stuck in Executive Director of the Chick-fil-A peach bowl to collect kickoff classic is joining us here right to your concerns are your concerns that two conferences are going to grow so big, meaning that they are not done at this point that it's going to eliminate the need for any nonconference games they will just play each other so explain what you mean about your concerns as it pertains to the elimination of the kickoff games not to denigrate any presidents or commissioners or AEDs or my concern is holistically about what are we doing are we in the education business or are we in this business of sports. Let's declare and let's move forward, you can't be both. You know it before in the education business giving example my concern on collectives collectives shouldn't existing donor money shouldn't exist to pay kids to come to that university to pay for play screen. Those collectors should be available so that when that kid student athlete athlete what everyone: goes that university gets his degree then that collective should be there to give them a job. That's what those collectors should be doing not paying kids on the front side to come there would be there on the backside so that volleyball player NC State when she graduates she has a job because that's what were in the business of educating kids and making them citizens in the United States or wherever to to give something back to society right we we keep looking at the 2% instead of the 90% which I was a part of right. Where's the conversation with the NFL Kenny Pickett can be a first-team All-American and not plan our ballgame because the NFL gives him a draft card and first round pick, and he can't claim as ballgame is worried about getting hurt.

You know where they with an insurance program to say Kenny working outward in a pay a lot of money in the NFL and here go play in your ballgame and insurance program takes care of so if you do get hurt. You've made your money and insurance program, where's that dialogue taken place where's the dialogue that were the second most favorite sport thing by fans is true. The NFL is number one by far, far distant place. They're making over 10 billion in TV revenues. We collectively in college football make about $1 billion. That's too much of a gap right we would be better as we learned in business school.

One plus one equaling three rather than one minus one equaling -2, which is what were doing individually with these conferences.

We need to get United around at conference Commissioner college football Commissioner for a college basketball Commissioner, an Olympic sport Commissioner and a college baseball commissioner and have them develop a board that is made up of AEDs and commissioners you know that sport let them create a vision of the sport.

Break them out of the NCAA and have that sport run their own rules and their own regulations enforcement and move that sport forward with some vision in basketball and football and baseball and Olympic sports. That's my thought that we should be doing instead of UCLA being $100 million in debt running from the pack 12 which they been in for 85 years right in going to the Big Ten just like Marilyn did well. Marilyn was also invited me to teach my kids right you were talking about student athletes welfare, but we haven't traveled from UCLA to Rutgers to play lacrosse match take up three days traveling either in school right right, let's get them an education. Let's get him a job afterwords and that's the business we should be in instead of professional sports without me close on this with Gary stoking from the peach bowl. The I asked this of Jim Phillips based on everything that's happened over the last let's just say 12 months.

How can the leaders of these conferences. How can there be trust when Greg Sankey and Bob Bowlby are sitting across from each other while at the same time, Texas and Oklahoma are leaving the big 12 for the SEC we had this alliance and the Big Ten adds UCLA and USC Jim's answer was its business. I still don't know that you how can there be trust. How can we trust everybody to work together. Why would we save our student happened right. These are grown men doing things and I don't blame bobbles exactly in the instances you brought up the presence of universities you've asked of the NCAA. There is no leadership on the NCAA were where were at.

Because the lack of leadership presidents to great jobs and universities. They have too much going on to know sports. That's why they hire in a D right but they need to get out of the way because they can't leave because they don't know the sport they don't have time to know the sport. God bless him not denigrating, not denigrating the commissioners, but you need a focus leadership need a break away from the NCAA.

You can't have schools that don't play football voting on things that might them back. Schools that play big time for plaintiff you know at the end of the day the presidents you know need to give up the leadership to lead, you need to be able to create a vision have to be willing to take heat that was the presidency don't want to heat they don't know the sports of the can create a vision not denigrating with the reality of the job Greg Sankey is doing what's best interest of the SEC because that's what is paid by the president.

What we all need to do is get on the same page collectively together. They were college football fears were were going to go for college basketball peers were going to go for Olympic sports Olympic sports 80% of athletes in the Olympic teams to represent this country come from the University what's gonna happen to them. We need to have somebody focus on the exports and move them forward collectively together and it may be that they break up into working under the NGV roles notes that we need people focused know that's the way you have to run the business and you can't run a business with five different conferences and that of 550 other schools trying to make a decision everybody has different needs. Basketball is different needs and football football differently from Olympic sports.

So let's if were in the business of sport. Let's say were in the business of sports run like a business.

If were in the business of education, let's get the kids educated look out for the student athletes, welfare, mental health, etc. and then let's get him a job afterwords.

That's what we should be focused on.I'll see you New Year's Eve with the Wolfpack that they picked up as I said from your lips to God. Everything okay with you regulations on your hope, your news show and think about what we come back. We thank Gary stoking we've still got Mack Brown and Dave Clawson, wakes coach Carolinas coach both those still become available to background as the head coach at the University of North Carolina has the conveyor belt treating you here operation kickoff.

It's good it's good you gotta be emphatically this is my 34th meeting while so the guys used to tell me the best thing you can do is leave with no headline at 70 you just say what you think. So there's gonna be so so that's just part of the thing you bring that up.

You can get away with more as you get older. My grandmother why don't resort my grandmother is no longer with us. Obviously she was entered mid 90s.

She was at an assisted living home totally had all her faculties and would steal books from the library because she liked them.

She said what I can do not give me cherry pie reason for Joe Paterno came and honored me at a function in Texas and he stood up he insulted everybody that was there and I laughed again to Mustang innovation in mass and you do the something was 83 years something like that when you get this age they are amazed that you remember things and say things like that matter. Background wife after Sam how what is it, well, we three years ago when center Sam how played the ballgame right as a true freshman, he beat South Carolina and Miami in the first two games. The two guys we have are very talented and Jacoby Crystal clear the year in Arkansas break may live from Alabama play a year in North Carolina and they got experience, so we should be further M and we have better players now than we had when Sam started years ago. So we just gotta see how it plays out. People of Sutter Young apply to pins on them right you know if you would you rather play one your brother have Sam back so so what we've got to do is is whatever the situation dictates for us to win. We got figured out.that's our job as coaches. June 19, 2000 started May 6, 1997 the announcement that the Hartford whalers were coming to North Carolina transition of heartbreak of figuring it out on the fly became sport or look at the 25th anniversary of the moon, presented by the company of North Carolina. Listen now my ask you about both of these quarterbacks in the second. I'm curious about Sam. It was one of the real. It was a cool thing I thought they played in the ballgame last year because McKinney Pickett implantable is like these guys are protecting their futures, which I understand I understand I am sure you did what we surprised that Sam said what I was pleased, but I wasn't surprised.

He never even thought about not playing because he's a football player goes back up to Ricky Williams when he was in Texas were were plan the cotton bowl he's already won the Heisman Mason shrimp, but I would not play because I love the play is way make it courteous that I might get hurt ride the bike since I don't worry about than Cedric Benson sat and cried in the locker room after we beat Michigan.

The Rosenwasser way crab a church mainly said no. He said I'm crying because I'll never have University of Texas uniform on again so that there still passion. Some of the guys in Sam just won the Patterson award, which is on the highest board you can limit the University of North Carolina needs given back to kids that can't afford to eat good and in Orange County so he's just a wonderful representative of the University and his family and and he did so much for us. He really is one thing that pilaster yes they have for what should have been right because of his first two years and then we were good enough to help them enough last year but but he's put us back on the map and and got us in a position now where we can actually compete at this level you want everybody last year.

The pilot may not have been in the maybe a better thinking it's it's just talking. I watched us right I'm gonna be honest.that's the thing you might be at 70 and possibly were playing that item will convince our team. We were bad, right, but I was trying to convince the team that you can't just walk around and be complacent and women were not good enough and I just think they listen to all the hype more than the listen. A million is, what today's about the height day. It is because everybody's got hope and everybody is this healthy or not be good or bad, excited, and in truth seventh Lake game that 90% of these will have a disappointing year and not finish like they wanted to. And that's just part of part immediate will find out pretty soon how good you are, because I think your trip to the to the rock is to be interesting. You have a game week zero this year is was that game designed to just kinda knocked the kinks out before you get to the game at now, but we wanted a home game with young quarterbacks before we went on the road to a tough game but that state and it also gave us an open date for Notre Dame okay so it really worked well from from two or three different standpoints but you you really do want to take young quarterbacks have not started in the game and and put them on the road against a really good team and after I Was very very good. That is going to be a tossup game. I think again metallurgist Georgia state.

There better than they've ever been John Elliott's done a tremendous job. I told our people ever body all of our opponents that are in FCS should schedule us because they all get really good after they schedule it so exciting for us to have were going to Georgia state were going to have state so we had trouble waiting on the road. There you go, will have to get that fixed fast.

One more question about the two quarterbacks that you got. If it's even whether they both played well or they just got both tread water. What's your plan.

If it's even you have a guy that you think but we can we can manage more this way like if there even the American you manage the game more with Criswell because of his other attributes or the trust that we haven't gotten there yet. It's a great question and one that will have to address were hoping that they'll separate.

That's what were hoping and if if not, were hoping there will be a reason that you not rock rock paper scissors. What do you have to choose one now, but I do know we played two quarterbacks and it's worked with put one in the Scoring we left it in story came out and that that was ago we told months.

It's not complicated. Pretty simple does seem like a simple equation you get you coached at all levels. Your nap when they were one AA you it's too late to been your is the second run here in Texas so you been all over the place.

How do you look at the state of college football today. I it's very healthy with some real life problems that we need to fix and need to fix immediately were making decisions without looking at consequences we throw the transfer portal out there. It's good for Joe Burks good for a lot of kids that needed to transfer but then we don't have guidelines which we don't say when it is kids are leaving it midseason letters walk away from their teams, which in healthy people are our buying people off campuses now which is they say they're not but they are it's real it's happening and then you go back and look at the combination of an aisle, which is a wonderful thing and thought if an artist can make money as a student musician can make money as a student, like an athlete right so I got it we had no guidelines. We had no guardrail. So now the ones that are paying the most money for the recruits are the ones I have the best recruiting years and we need to always keep a competitive balance in recruiting or will have 10 teams that are playing in rest of us are just going to stand around watching so wait. We gotta make some really hard decisions right now and because people need more money now than ever before realignments talk about that.

That's the next step of this and and I'm a guy that really believes in and what's best for college football not just what's best for North Carolina. Even as the president of the American football coaches Association. I used to ask the coaches on the board for 17 hours, both for what's best for college football don't vote for what's best for your school and to me 50 teams in two mega conferences is not best. You have a whole lot of good programs that just that and the fans article, if it's not competitive benefits. It's not something that they're playing for that. It's going drift down in her group of five and then FCS and the division two and three so I'd rather see us keep conferences across the country and be competitive and really look at. They they throughout a 12 team playoff. Why don't we do it. One of the consequences.

Let's think about all the things we have to fix that we do it, but let's do it before we do it and I think that's the thing we gotta learn select less must be better prepared and asked more questions and have more different situations through the process that we can evaluate before we just say we pick this background, you have to go, but I wasn't sure if this is good to be ACC media day for Big Ten media day were I talk to you or SEC media day because I was told that Bubba Cunningham was basically shopping UNC to that that I is better set but this just a joke but I thank you very much for your time.

It's always fun. Thank you.

I remember it Texas not make this very quick they thought we were going to the pack 12 we looked at recruiting we looked at travel. We looked at everything the day before ESPN, the Longhorn network. It went away so I'm worried about the Florida A&M who's going to start a quarterback how do we get a lot more depth on our team.

Why did we play so inconsistent last year.

I'm not worried about where we will be quiet you look like you're in a good place I'm at a good place. Thank you very much. Thank you. I will be right back with Dave Clawson Wake Forest next. We've heard from NC State yesterday North Carolina today. Duke today. Who's missing Wake Forest head coach Dave Clawson. We caught up to them up with him yesterday afternoon. The new world order of college football where it doesn't make a difference what time zone you're in, you can be whatever conference you want to start there. But I guess I did.

What's your take on where this whole thing is headed. I really don't know.

I don't think anybody knows you II would be an advocate for Commissioner of college football or a leadership group that makes decisions in the best interest of the enterprise right now. I've said this before, but I don't think anybody's doing anything wrong.

Right now you know commissioners have to act in the best interest of their conference right athletic didn't directors and presidents have to act in the best interest of their institution, but nobody is overlooking the entire enterprise. So even those some of these moves might be good for individual conferences or individual schools. I'm not convinced it's good for college football as a whole. But until there's a leadership of college football. I think were going to continue down this road, and sometimes it may be a slow trickle and other times it comes out of nowhere it likes. It's like opening up a fire hydrant and I talked about it in these. In this way to without getting to the Commissioner of the sport in that what is happened was really good for a few schools in a couple weeks or more in one league, but the overall product ultimately hurts because all of the attention on everything gets gotta separating tooth but I think Jim Phillips today called it the two gated communities like I get the whole gated community thing but inclusion is good for this. It's hard to grow and enterprise by limiting opportunity and again I'm not critical of what anybody's doing any rescission or making but everyone's doing what's best for their leg or their school and at some point it would be nice to have somebody that looks at the totality of college football in college athletics and says what's best for the entire enterprise you I don't know if schools moving conferences is generating you know more value or more revenue if you're shifting Dave Clawson Wake Forest final question about about this is what's good for college football good for college athletics or those two things separate again II think you know everybody has to make decisions at each institutions of how invested they are not Wake Forest we've invested in football, you know, we spent $100 million on facilities. We've won a lot of football games we've invested in our staff and I think it be hard to say that this point Wake Forest is an all in with football and I think I should be in all in and are selling out our stadium has benefited the other sports at Wake Forest that when you sell your stadium more revenue and that certainly helps our soccer team in our women's golf team and our field hockey team and all the sports that we want to be successful at it. Wake Forest have a good well-rounded athletic department.

Keep watching your men's golfers nearly when major Capex and in our in both of our our golf teams when the ACM championship this year and were really proud of those athletes and those coaches they Clawson. Let's talk football.

Shelley not maybe you don't like to look back. But I'm curious what is your highlight of last year to a great year. Obviously there were so many of them, but certainly the NC State game is a really big game for us in that game, you're the winner of that game was going to be in the driver seat to win the Atlantic division and for that came to be at night and have our stadium sold out we had over 90% of our students at Wake Forest at that game and it was a magical night for our program and in its you know we beat a team that we have great respect for. That's a really good football player but there were so many highlights you to be in Syracuse and over time and finding a way to be Louisville in winning the bowl game and winning the Atlantic division championship at BC and when you went 11 games and heavier like that.

There's a lot of highlights coming after the state came and knowing what was on the line. How did you get the guys up to play at BC one that we had NC State and then we had Clemson okay right of the challenge was we did. We went down the Clemson and didn't play well you got that out of the way we amen. So that game you know you gotta and if you look at teams records after they play Clemson. It's not real good.

And so that was the challenge is a guys we still control this thing. We could've wrapped up the leg at Clemson. We failed to do that and we had one more chance and I we went to BC and then played a heck of a game. I wanted to ask Jim Phillips today why he didn't just scrap divisions right now. Altogether, but I guess this is way the way the schedules to be nasty divisions are gone after this year. Divisions are gone which will allow you to play North Carolina conference games more often as opposed to having to schedule nonconference and that's got to be good. That's a positive.

But the negative is that we don't plan to state every year.

And you know NC State. We play them 110 consecutive years. I think it's like any decision you make to get something, you gotta give something up were glad we get the play Carolina more often were disappointed that 110 year consistent rhyme and reason to disappear. Did you get it to get hosed on the on the I guess primary partners now. I mean, when you have 14 different school is right. There's a lot of different agendas but no question many creek at the big four together would advocate for that yeah but I don't know if that's fair to the rest the schools in the leg, right if you keep all those four together were in the middle of the leg right traits a lot of extra travel for other people so I believe all those things were considered, they Clawson is joining us here couple more things. The not only forgot what I was asking but that's fine. I appreciate you considering others will have 12 more time to talk throughout the okay thanks for having me on. Thank you for all all broke government machine on the scene broke on the background headset grabbed the wrong backgrounds microphone that is awful. Absolutely awful. I was in the swing for a little bit certain things going on. I just wanted to put a background like about guys you know I I just we had got distracted by something. I was can ask a question about Hartman ended up not doing that spot before you get out here. We have about roughly 2 more minutes, give or take. Didn't move between from the pack 12 to the Big Ten minutes probably a formality for UCLA and USC for USC. No strings they can go although they have to wait until their grant of rights and that a couple years UCLA, on the other hand might have hurdle to overcome.

If the governor of California and the Board of Regents yeah has some has any sway over this matter and I'm not sure they do. This could simply be Gavin Newsom was a UCLA guy. I believe Gavin Newsom saying hey wait a minute, this sucks leaving the Pac-10 back 12 to go to the Big Ten which in the grand scheme of things it might certainly be great for UCLA financial because he says that the Board of Regents was never consulted the at issue is whether or not the decision for athletics is made simply at the university level or if you must go through the Board of Regents and I'll tell you where how this matters to be ACC because of these types of things. If you have to go through legislation. Then I wonder if the grant of rights, which was signed, did that also go through the state legislature.

Great question. Just something to think just something to think about June 19, 2000 all started May 6, 1997 with the announcement that the Hartford whalers were coming to North Carolina transition of heartbreak. Figuring it out on the fly became 25th anniversary of the move presented by the company of North Carolina. Listen now my
