It’s popular to think that “all roads lead to God.” We like to believe that different religions are all really teaching the same thing, and as long as you’re sincere, God will be pleased with you. But while that philosophy may sound nice, it just isn’t true! Pastor J.D. explains that we don’t get to choose how we worship. We can only approach God on his own terms.

Angry life with Katie Greer I somebody recently was struggling with their faith say to me like you know it's not that I don't believe in God, it's just that I don't like it. I don't like how we set up universe I don't like the fact that he doesn't stop just as I don't like all judgment thing I don't like how we David gets back, you're not the first one to be offended God the Bible for all people in all places at all times.

It's an equal opportunity offender life I Molly you question and have you heard the phrase all roads lead to God that all religions are all really teaching the same thing and as long as you're sincere, you're good with God. That philosophy may sound nice and inclusive but it just isn't true today.

Pastor JD explained that we don't get to choose how we worship, we can only approach God on the terms gave us. So let's get started.

Bring a series called search for a king and pastor Janie titled this message.

Still, small Bible envelope about an open chapter 6, chapter 6 will tell you that this is always been one of my favorites Bible passages when I was a teenager. The title of this section of my Bible was simply David dances naked before the Lord. What is not intriguing about that.

Notice that you ever wrote first and second Samuel had a flair for the bizarre with the risqu stories about people get hacked to pieces before the Lord you Dave getting caught was solid and awkward moment in the cave. Saul popped a squat dose appearing in talking about terrible things are good happen here in second Sammy.

You can hear stories of a peeping toms and adultery and incest and Absalom contract by territory of being treated like a piata I honeybees like these books are written for middle school audience. Write in this story because not disappoint all kinds of drama in this story and this bizarre story. David is going to teach you some things about gospel centered worship now acknowledge something here as we get into this, I realize that we have a lot of people in here who come from some pretty different backgrounds is as it relates to worship for some of you grew up in church worship was very subdued.

It was reflective brothers love you worship was more of the Pentecostal writer if the service was any good. Somebody passed out right and those you are more subdued. Look at those who are yelling and got her hands in the air deflector loud and irreverent doing all the stuff to show those of you who are more the energetic side.

Look around you like what's wrong with you people right. I mean you Gallagher heads off at a basketball game but every week you come in here not like you're at a others of you who are new to Christianity with the big deal is. Anyway we got was with you. Would you sing it so much and I just don't get that raising your hand so you got a question in the middle of worship. What what was going on that guy who was coming to our church as a graduate student do we have lunch together.

He said on your church worship Trevor Benson is I got I come every single week, your church, he said, but I'm always 25 minutes late on purpose. I just want to skip the music market feel weird about it or something and I will sing the large groups of people and so you may wonder what is the big people with with worship. Well, I think that the data something here for all of you. Some of you are legitimately going to change an attitude that you have for worship, so you subdued people are partly right and partly wrong most of the energetic people are partly right and partly wrong and some of you who are Christians are to learn what's going on with this craziness that we call worship now also tell you there are some things are very difficult here in this passage to make it difficult for me to say, but not try to be overly dramatic. I've told you this before I saw like the Holy Spirit is made very clear to me that it is not my responsibility to edit God's word in any form or fashion whatsoever and try to make it politically correct are more pleasing for you to hear or more, according to my own preferences. Even I try to give it to you unfiltered right and so you got a problem with some of things to say today and I would encourage you not to take it with me because I didn't write it to the author who wrote these things try to give it to you. The way that it's written, I'm old.

It's glorious offensiveness right so you just need to be need to be ready need to be ready second Samuel chapter 6 were to begin reading in verse two we do that thing rot real bit thoughtful about me I think there were 6% and Dave arose and went to bring up from there. The ark of God, which is called by the name of the Lord of hosts who sits enthroned on the cherubim stop first to get a little background here.

What is the ark, when Israel left Egypt, God told him to construct a big wooden box and overlay it with gold and put a couple of statues of some angels called the cherubim on top and in between. It was a little place with a platform called the mercy seat once a year.

One priest, the high priest would go into the place where they kept the ark of the covenant place for the holy of holies, which was in the tabernacle.

It was a room was nothing in the room except for this Ark of the covenant.

One piece of furniture in their one priest going one time here with the blood of a sacrifice and sprinkle blood of the mercy seat signifying the God one day send a sacrifice to pay for the sins of the people of Israel inside of the ark of the covenant inside of that box. There were three things there was a jar of manna, which is what God provided for the people of the wilderness and symbolized God's provision for them. There was the two tables of the 10 Commandments would symbolize God's law and that he had given to them and then thirdly, there was Aaron's rod that budded, which means like his walking stick that sprouted pears and apples.

And I got stuff in that symbolizes God's miraculous power's provision. His loss of his power to get inside of that, it was the presence of God to these people right so David is getting the ark back with brings up the second background question. That is where is the art is been on vacation or or what's been going on well in order to answer that you got all we got for single Siebel turnouts, walking to this chapter to its final what happened to be our first Nemecek five. The Israelites are going to battle just listings but because the Israelites have greatly sinned against God, and had been living with all kinds of idolatry and rebellion. They lose the battle just listings. I will well rather than repenting of their sin. They thought I know let's take the ark of the covenant into the battle with us because if we have the ark of the covenant with us is no way we can lose it was there that it was the rabbit's foot.

It was therefore leaf clover. It was the grilled cheese with the Virgin Mary space that appeared in grilled cheese and said that was what that what it was for that they thought was our good luck charm is no way we can lose but you as you probably understand God is not into being manipulated and good luck charms. Don't make any difference to him. Other crosses whether fully clovers and so people not only lose the battle. It was the ark itself listings capture the ark of the covenant in battle.

I may take it like a trophy back to the city. One of their cities called Ashdod and put it in the temple of their God of war made to God when they put right side of the statue of Dagon try to show you know how our God, your God, in battle to the next morning they come into the temple of Dagon, and they find as they walk in the statue of Dagon is now lying face down in front of the ark of the covenant which you got admit is kind of funny if I got put a fraternity prank on this detriment lie prostrate in front of the ark of the covenant so that's really weird that the priest there.

Please get there statue of Dagon is still the thing back up which I'll tell you something when you have to stand your God of war backup my WRI guy right but but they don't get that they sent back a little in the next morning. Again Dagon is face down for the ark of the covenant, except this time his head and hands disappeared just so weird when it is headed and go right well that afternoon. It says a disease swept through the city of Ashdod and everybody developed members and been mice or veranda city so that it was like you call me superstitious but I think this might have something to do with that ark, so they wrap up the ark incident to another Philistine city called That's right they regifted the ark of the covenant and the people get out what what why we get this look at that and the people of Ashdod like in joint and so the people of God did same thing happens to them to break out of everybody mice around the city in a bunch people die little of this thing solicited to 1/3 city with the city County crime.

Same thing happens in electronic so finally the forcing report is a light look. We got to get rid of this thing that we would just feel like you are not the best fit for us double daughter of the furniture.

We should probably return this Israel right away to get there priest together and the like. What we do with this thing you know in the priest say in a truly fascinating conversation. The pre-safe while you get back to Israel, but you can just about got include like and I'm sorry, guess what will I got like, I'm sorry, like flowers or something like yeah but not flowers. You need to make images golden images of the tumors and golden images of the mice mice partner. How do you make a golden image of a tumor.

Yesterday my daughter came to me with a little mascot yellow Play-Doh and said, look at him in the sunshine enough like one that's awesome. That has to be something like how you make a tumor out of gold. There is you know it's it's it's there is a maybe images of tumors and they make these images of mice and they put him beside the ark of the covenant. The courtyard of the covenant card and put a couple cows in front of the cart and then I get an argument on why the cart back to his room because he wants to drive this thing back to Israel whether enemies live while in the middle.

This argument also the tiles turned themselves around and face toward Israel, and walk back all the way to Israel to cross the border and like the house of the guiding should match right shoe mesh recognizes what this thing is so he takes the towels and he kills him, and he takes toward any tears up one of the cart and use that to build a fire that offer the calcium sacrifice on the fire to God and he takes the ark of the covenant puts in his house right well some of the people in his house get curious and look inside of the ark, and they die using waiters will start right you know that happened today.

Look inside me are they all die in semesters last Thursday because of a buddy of his got into bed, dab is him and I got some before you what you have, the ark of the covenant and outcomes and gets it puts it in his house in his tent. He lives in you got a guestroom and nobody does it, puts it, there any time I guess because his house like and what's not really like that window and thereby review and it stays there for 20 years. 20 years brings us up sex and sex.

Come on, I was a lot of detail.

Thanks that's between verse two and verse three okay mill on Sunday, verse three may carry the ark of God on a new card brought out of the house of the Bennett Avenue and was the son of the Bennett dad was driving the new card verse five and David all the house of Israel were making Mary before the Lord with songs and liars and hearts of Hammond B3 organ and electric guitar right they are having a worship service.

I'm either doing what you think they ought to be doing verse six when it came to the threshing floor of the kind the oxen stumbled and put out his hand to the ark of God to steady it towards what's happening disease policies.

Oxen walk along the one of them trips over something he starts to stumble not cart starts to teeter back and forth in the net ark of the covenant starts to sway back and forth and side shots off that court and he runs around a reaches up and he grabs all the ark, to keep it all down.

The ground verse seven and the anger of the Lord was kindled against it was a and God strike him down there because of his error literally Hebrew what it says there is is is your reference and he died there beside the ark of God. This next verse, verse eight, and David was angry because the Lord had burst forth against Susan, you understand that reaction things I love about the Bible is how it is. David was a God like God, is trying to help you out try to do you a favor. The reason the point that people encounter truth about God in the Bible today and they feel offended and then they arrogantly assume that we are the first generation in history to be enlightened enough to be offended by the Bible. The Bible has been offending people for ages, including its writers, I had somebody recently was struggling with their faith say to me like you know it's not that I don't believe in God. I should believe in here allow everything else will be here if you want there. It's just that I don't like it. I don't like how we set up universe I don't like the fact that he doesn't stop just as I don't like all judgment thing I don't like how he rules the world. David gets that David was angry at God because of what he perceived as unusually harsh judgment. You're not the first one to be offended God, the Bible been offending all people in all places at all times. It's an equal opportunity offender. Like the point of trying to make is don't be an ignorant and arrogant American who assumes you the first people in history to be offended just because you graduated with UNC Chapel Hill education right. You're not always been offended you what you want is not helping me because they found reasons to believe anyway say this is the God of the universe. You can expect to be offended and there's a lot of stuff in here that you be offended by you to make a decision with you to edit the Bible to fit your preferences, where the word of God will change you drink verse nine. David was afraid of the Lord that day and he, so how could the ark of the Lord come to me first to answer. David was not willing to take the ark of the Lord to the city of David, but David took it aside to the house of Obed Edom to get psyched you get that then walked away from God put the house of somebody's not even to date God broke up temporarily is how you read that they walked away from God writers them. Number one the problem of God's presence. The problem of God's presence is the ark represent God's presence. It brings his blessing.

It is David's source of strength and security and identity right then wants God to be like to raise the presence of God. Just like many of you God really needs to be a part of my life that is part of my family got needs to be a part of my life before I die. A lot of us want the security that the presence of God brings there's a problem with the ark there's a problem God's presence and that is it's dangerous. They can also cause great destruction, not just for the Philistines and also tells about the Israelites to like I told you we got a problem with this is what does a hero to got a favor got me know when he thinks we think it was probably should've heard God shouting down from heaven like a loser appreciate that.

Thanks a lot. Thanks for helping me out like you know he dies. That was a problem with visiting boys heart was good he was sincere. We try to do your favor. You should have rewarded this guy not strike him dead. Bottom line is we think the punishment is more severe than the crime scene when the punishment is more severe than the crime a little tuning fork goes off inside about that says justice in here. We think that God is being unjust and are hard to accuse God of injustice and that angers us. Just like it did is the Bible's premise and I give it to you straight up with no apology. The punishment is not more severe than the crime is not more severe the crime.

Couple things going on your first God had given specific instructions on how that art was to be carried to avoid situations like this, God told him of the book of Numbers that there were to make holes in it which they did as you propose that you carry it certain. The priest would carry it on their shoulders and they would cover it so that nobody could ever have a reason that they had to touch the ark, but how are the Israelites. That on a car pull back up to where they learn that the Philistines try this one passage on a settle for all time. The question you can help, whether not you come to God and what you want to come whether not you can just worship him anywhere you want as long as your heart a sincere. This is how I prefer to do it. I think this passage is pretty clear that God decides how he is to be worshiped. God decides the way that you were supposed to get him.

God is the one who defines his own worship first from second problem is much even more serious problem in that one bigger issue that is user is unaware of his own sinfulness is is unaware of his own sinfulness user sees the ark about to touch the ground and he wants to protect the ark from the earth. He thinks I should keep the ark from touching the ground.

Because the ground is dirty, assumes that his hand is less dirty than the ground. It's but the earth has never committed the blasphemy of rejecting God's authority. The earth had always obey the commands of God. It wasn't the ground of the dirt that will pollute the ark. It was the touch of man that would pollute the ark understand that. So he touches the ark baby doesn't understand it either so he's mad at God's right was a dead rightness them. The reason we do not understand the judgment of God is we don't understand the wickedness of our sinfulness. The reason we do not understand the judgment of God is we don't understand the wickedness of our sinfulness. Let me try to bring this down to us. Okay because most of us have never seen somebody struck never touching the arbors of us have never seen the governor of 20 volunteers a prayer support. Okay, most of us have seen you so much I bring is that many of us are angry at God because of the whole health. We think that hell is to severe punishment for sin and only what got any.

Come on one small Sam one small Sam and return of the apartment.how is it that sin we committed a 70 year span.

How is that is punished by hell for eternity. That is, to severe is an overreaction or previous thing about the cross. What have we done so bad that require the son of God to come down and to be beaten so that his flesh laid open. What was so severe that he went through the cross. What was it about what we had done that. That's what required to pay for sin. They say the cross was unspeakably brutal brutal. You can see it in the Scriptures with a beer with a cat of nine tails before they got into the cross. Historian Cicero tells us that many men never made it to the cross.

They were just beaten. They would die on the whipping block is able to attend a nine tails and hippies of the bone and meddling in glass that would wrap around the body.

The person they were beating, he would dig into the skin and the muscle hitting 39 times and happily wrap around they would jerk it will pull off the skin and eventually start to open up the abdominal cavity to save it, but it is very likely that when Jesus was down this beating that his intestines would been hanging down to his knees, nails, put his hands in his feet. His beard pulled out his face beaten so that Isaiah says he didn't even look at a man anymore. You can only not recognize him. You could even recognize.

It was human. What have we done that was so bad. The cross had it all to tell you something about the severity of our sin to some of you here that you that's the point. Cross grosses you out your sin grosses God out. The cross was a just penalty for sin, hell is what hell is because our seminar's that is what our sin.

If the cross is what the cross was because our sin is what it once the fact we don't see as wicked as part of problem Adam and Eve made a choice, a choice of cosmic treason. The put your fist God's face and said no you will not be in charge will be a jerk Enemy I would marinate Apple I like apples will not be punished for their sin difficult. That you ratify their decision. Every one of us every one of us ratified their decision regarding St. Augustine had a great way, but he said I remember as I remember the day that I ratified that decision is in the walking down the road and I looked in the guise yard cross offense and slowly had a pear tree, and I want some of those pairs. I knew it was feeling sick so I called cross that fence and I got theirs apples the REIT repairs. The reason I went up the stairs is not just because I was hungry. I also was excited about it because it was wrong. He said not only did I steal because of my hunger. I also enjoyed the wrongness of what I was doing and he said accurately. Every single person comes a place in her life with a delight in the wall more than the light in the right that is counted as hatred of God because when you love the wrong and you love injustice more than you love the rights that is a way of saying God I hate you I hate goodness I hatred and I delight more than one right challenging message from Pastor Katie at the end of the story in Jesus, God's given way to become right here really grateful while he studied King David here at Summit life United States is in the middle and another significant election any way mean to engage in politics in a Christian way you think. We asked that I asked would you be awesome if Christians were known for being the most civil the most gracious members of any public debate. Sadly it's not the case you don't believe me just check Twitter, Facebook, or your social media platform of choice when it comes to politics seems that many Christians have the right beliefs but may have. But I often refer to the spiritual PO body is a smell bad with what they maybe say the right things but it doesn't smell like Jesus we want to pursue the truth of Christ in a Christlike way.
