When the sun comes up in the morning, our natural response is to pull the pillow over our head and pretend it’s still dark. And most of us will admit that we often respond the same way when our sins come to light. But Pastor J.D. explains that for true repentance and healing to happen, we can’t keep ignoring or excusing our sin. On this edition of Summit Life, we’re looking at a Psalm that King David wrote after he was caught in sexual sin, and we’re learning the steps to biblical repentance.

He is the provider he is the sustainer we are so glad you've joined us. Let's get into today's program today on Summit life JD Greer talks about true repentance.

David did say that he needs a forgiveness lesson that removes the penalty of his sin. Sin debt includes his love? This whole soul out gospel. So, to repentance finds its way I'm only bit of edge their morning person. I don't know about you but when the sun comes up in the morning.

My natural response is to pull the pillow back of my head and pretend it's still dark and ugly. Most of us have that same response when our sins come to light. Just ignore it and hope it will go away, but today Pastor JD explains that for true repentance to happen. We can't keep excusing our sin and pushing it aside where in a study of the life of King David and today will be looking at a Psalms that David wrote right after he was caught in that sexual sin Pastor JD titled this powerful message. Repentance. Everybody just a reality this weekend everybody is what you do after you ship that determines the difference between life and death. Here's the bursa we left off with last week about you talk for all.

We got it okay.

Proverbs 2013 whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy. That is a promise we are going to delve into deeply this week. They was going to confesses said in all of its ugliness and throw himself on the mercy of God. You see when we are exposed in our sin you know somebody confront you a friend. Maybe a boss maybe your spouse, your conscience reveals that whatever we almost always react in one of four different ways you to jot these down about one we hide number two we rationalize it we we explain why, since all of the bad number three.

We blame shift. We blame shift. It's not really my fault before the option we repent we were for that which is what David did. We acknowledge the full extent of our sin, we throw ourselves in the mercy of God will walk you deeply through this passage the Scripture the Salm Psalm 51 for the rest of her time there this weekend. Miss Salm Psalm 51 gives you the anatomy of the internal workings of the true gospel settle repentance to the six actually 55 essential elements of gospel centered repentance somebody one verse one, have mercy on me all God according your steadfast love.

According to your abundance overflowing mercy. I write this down one gospel centered repentance makes its sole hope the mercy of God. Verse three for I know my transgressions of my sin is ever before me.

Number two, gospel centered repentance owns the sin we commit.

It is deeply inherent in who we are, but the next verse, verse four gives you. You only have I sent done what evil in your sight. So what was David me to get you and you only have I sinned. This is a little bit but is the heart of the whole, the whole matter. Okay, so I just got very gospel centered repentance is directed verse for God gospel centered repentance is directed first toward God. Consider two very important reasons. A. David says gives you when you only have I said I give the is an ANOVA realizes his sin began as a sin against God's sin began as a sin against God.

They were to say why is it that I needed that feeling of power that came from Sweden with Bathsheba whited on the back. Why did I run to Bathsheba as a refuge, why not Craig but she was beauty my soul had this incredible suction power directed at her I needed her arms, he says, because I did not have yours. God I needed her beauty. I craved it because I was not captivated by your God.

All of our sin usually starts in a broken relationship with God were not satisfied with what God is given us.

We don't trust God to take care of us so we go around God outside of his boundaries to get what we want, what were you jealous why is it that you get jealous is because you look at somebody else that God has given to them what you wish she'd given you so you look at somebody else's car is girlfriends my jobs was lots of ice talents and your like I wish I had that in that moment what you are saying is God I don't trust what you gave to me and I am not satisfied with you and your plan. That's where sin begins. Like I explained you in our pictures on the taken members last year break in the first commandment is what lead you to break all the other nine, the First Amendment, you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind.

If you obey the first commandment. The other nine we just fall naturally the place a problem with any of the commandments that we break is that it goes back to a lack of trust in a satisfaction with God and us. When David recognizes my sin began as a sin against God is the second reason I will statement is true.

David realizes that God is the most significant one. He's offended.

David realizes the gossamer significant one. He's offended what he done is your ride was hideous and despicable. Yes, but what David did to God. Believe it or not is even worse. God was the one who created them. God was the one who saved God was the one who took up of the pastor talking of everything. And David at this point is well with this truth looks the goddesses against you. You only have I said that word by the way, in Hebrew, which coupled with W you only indicates an intensity of emotion you God. You after all that you've given me what you show me I forsook you you you realize listen, you realize how large God is, you realize how every breath that you have ever drawn and never willed role is given to you by air that he is provided for you to breathe without you there would not be anything you understand how large the God of the universe is that when you commit cosmic treason. How deserving you and I are of his wrath.

Do you understand that our sin against him required, bloodied, brutal death of his son to purchase forgiveness. Jesus did not go what he went through because of what we did to reach other Jesus went there we went there because what we did the God goal doctrine of hell that we all hate draws that hell is what hell is because our sin was what our sin was against God. Hell was not created with what we did, which other Hells will create is what we did to God.

And David is overwhelmed by that is if you you you you sin against you realize what Jesus is giving you draws how gracious he is been kind to you, you realize the goodness that he's poured out you realize that when you have taken authority and said I'll live. How I want to live and I will practice boldly the very things that put you on the cross, you realize aimlessness that · verse six behold your delight in truth in the inward being you teach me wisdom in the secret places of my heart most of the time when we sin, we repent most of the time she's there.

When we repent. Our focus is on the action, God's focus is on the heart that led to the action.

God does not care about your conformity to his law inwardly, you'd rather be doing something else anymore that I would know my wife would want to be with me if she knew the whole time, secretly fantasizing about another woman. God does not want to dwell in the heart that is consumed with desire for sin anymore than I would want to live in a beautiful brick home where there was rotting, maggot vested courses in every room you see until you deal with the hardy changemakers can be superficial. God was God does not want a year of beautiful obedience. God wants an eternity 5 billion years of willing, joyful obedience, and the only way that that's ever going to happen is that the desires of your heart change. That's why the focus of David's obedience is not always done.

That's why the focus of David's repentance is on what he had become.

I just commit adultery on the kind of person who commits adultery that leads in verse seven. Purge me with this, but I meekly watch me and I shall be wider at single random that it what is hyssop when a leper is to be cleansed. You take the blood of the lamb. He takes hyssop like the leper with his blood and God will miraculously healed, that leper David is saying that he needs a forgiveness lesson that removes the penalty of his sin. The sin debt and cleanses his left wrist, heart see where this is all going this whole Saul readings out for the gospel.

This whole sunscreen… Back right is that here's number four gospel center repentance finds its hope in the gospel gospel center.

Repentance cries out for the gospel or find its hope in the gospel.

This is not the David's next series of prayers hide your face for my sins. And while my iniquities created me a Clay Hartl got a renewal right spirit within me. Verse 11 cast out of the presence of your Holy Spirit for me. Verse 12 restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. You see what David is calling out for.

I need someone who can put away my sin is saying I need salvation that can create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit can replace my old bad desires with new desires. How listen. How are the desires of your heart ever to be changed.

How can you change the design you can just will it be what other area. Can you just will a change of desire.

I wish that I desired to eat green beans and broccoli all the time but I do not.

I desire to eat cookie dough ice cream okay.

I wish that I could be like to see no evidence of night about all men fly hell a good thing agreed before I go to bed.

I can't change that desire how I change my desire for sin.I know I saw like a broken record here believe this, you change those desires by the gospel, you learn to love God by experiencing his extravagant love for you and in response to the gospel. That's how your heart is re-created. That's how you change your great very simple example of this, but one that I think just if you cannot shows you how different a radical visit store was told true story back from the Civil War days of a man who was very much against slavery and went to the slave auction to purchase/purposes is being told about Abraham Lincoln. I can verify that it was really rambling. That's where I heard I so this man goes to purchase a slave slave auction and after he purchases the slave girl takes her shackles off her papers as you are free swimming your free she says free like you know I don't want shackles and are free to everyone at Anya I bought you said I could set you free.

She said, so I'm free to do whatever quantities are you free to go wherever I want to go yes I'm free to live anywhere I want to live. Yes, I'm free to become anything that I want to become. He said yes.

So I'm free to do all that he said yes so that I choose to go with you.

What happens is experiencing him, experiencing that kind of love change your heart so that she does not stay with him out of duty, but she stays with him out of desire what happens when God sets us free, and we experience the gospel is that her heart is restructured, that we desire to love and be with God you will, is it what what David is crying out for what Jesus is this something that restructures your heart not so. Not only that he forgives your sins and absorbs the penalty from that but he actually breaks the power of sin, so that the very structures of your heart begin to change what Jesus does to the gospel.

If you re-create your heart so that your spirit is renewed and it is willing, having experienced the love of God, you develop a love for God you can do it. Jesus death by shedding abroad his love in your heart about filling you with the Holy Spirit. Number five gospel center. Repentance embraces the future promise by the gospel gospel center.

Repentance embraces the future promise by the gospel replicas notice there's like four verses there want you to they'll basically say the same thing. Verse 13 then I will teach transgressors your ways considerable return to you first. 14 my tongue will sing aloud of your rights as verse 15, the Lord, open my lips. My mouth will declare your praise. Verse 18 do good desire in your good pleasure build walls of Jerusalem, which is happy Texas. David is no longer focusing on his kingdom is now focusing again on God's see that when we sing about Sheba got focused on his kingdom.

And now he's now focused again on thoughts can what that means what you take away from that. Is this repentance always involves attorney from your kingdom to God's given thing that I do say to you, this is awesome is that when that happens, God is able to take the things that have damaged you most begin to use them for good in his kingdom. David is going to be a more effective king. He's gotta be a better symbol of Jesus. Now he's been through this that he would have never gone through it to begin with. I know some of you find this hard to believe but that pain that Shane that guilt is mistakes.

God has a plan for you in those things he is going to take those wounded parts use them in his kingdom. I know so many beautiful stories right here in our church were somebody has experienced deep sea, and now they've been given an understanding of God's grace that they would've never had they not been through it God in just the miraculous way that he works takes even our mistakes and turns them into his greatest triumphs. Like I told you last week. We serve the God of the cross who can erase our mistakes and we also serve the God of the resurrection who can re-create our future. The blood of Jesus makes all things new. The resurrection of Jesus re-creates newness through your life and takes your pain and uses it for yours and his kingdom is good gospel based repentance gospel said repentance embraces the future that God has for you. She just hosts all cries out for something. David never seen with his eyes but you and I know and that is it cries out for the gospel.

All the gospel is all through this chapter. They David said December 12 what it would make and send him you won't die your son will die in some sense he was paid yet and sent you sandwich one on their use in the picture was being given you your sin deserves death. But you're not going to die when your sons is going to die when your descendents now little baby. We know his name, gave us a picture of another son that will be born to David eventually when he was born in Bethlehem, the city of David, the Angels would say this unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord, and you will call his name Jesus, which means in Hebrew literally God is my salvation because he will save his from their sentence to what disappoints with the sports out is that the only way that you were ever going to be able to break the cycle of sin is by embracing Jesus. Acceptance of you so song cries out for the gospel.

We always had a guy got got. I will do better. I promise I promise I will do better. I will earn your forgiveness. You will never get that way ever you continue to cycle you will never get there. That way Jesus showed one time a woman to be caught in adultery is like the ultimate example for all the woman caught in adultery to the story to go to she drug bears the same Jesus, let him investors and customers about the rocks of the home.

Jesus Taylor with a woman. It's is the most shocking statement. Probably in all the Bible needed to, I can did you go and sin no more. What shocking about that statement is the order in which you put those two phrases as we always switch the order like if you don't send no more will continue Jesus with them is that neither like you did you go and sin no more, because this woman would gain the power to break this cycle of sin. She was in precisely by learning of God's unconditional love for and acceptance of her CD.

It wasn't the only people who will ever get better are those who know that Jesus loves and accepts them. Whether or not they ever get better. The only way to break the power of sin that hold you and keeps dragging you down is for you to understand that God's love for you is not given to you based on whether or not you ever break that sin is only when you accept what Jesus has done for you and given to you. That is acceptance to you is given you the gift is not something you work that you will have the ability to break the power set you understand me what I'm saying is there some of you struggle with homosexuality and God loves you the same whether or not you ever break that some of you are struggling because you have just been a nonstop cyclist in unison with the gospel says is that you don't have to overcome that only God's love is Jesus overcame it and gave it to you as a gift, but I told you, you will gradually take steps to get closer to God you receive all in one minute billion steps that he took to get close to you.

What happens is when you embrace that that snaps the power of sin in your life. Power to overcome sin is not found in self-will and self-reliance is found in forgiveness is found in embracing Christ done for you little record.

Example again very simple one, but I heard a story to story the guy is a dad talk about his daughter. My daughter, Jen six grade she got slightly crazy for smart goals of these AP English classes and she's really smart, but she didn't do well under pressure, so she gets in their eyes competing as you start to take. She can't do works easy to make and it's all because the pressure daggers the teachers I wasn't. You might like to smart obviously but she just can't handle the pressure she can help competition to grow to safety glass for teacher did something totally unexpected so that I was messages of government but never did she say exactly what did your daughter in a in the class right now. Whatever she does for the rest of the year. She gets an eight. Where was that woman when I was growing up she gets in a given source as she gets in a Nazi is freedom to be in the class.

This guy, story said I can believe it. My daughter who believe it is about the most profound change happen. My daughter and she was number one that class. She aced every single test because the pressure was gold you understand the true righteousness, true virtue grows in freedom, Jesus is one.

Your acceptance bracelets. All the sudden the love the ability to do right things grows up inside of gospel. The Gospels will snaps of power, sin. Some of you get the sense of dread about your sin you'll have the listen to that God speaks to you would hope. I know your heart is broken you're embarrassed because that sin is your last verse last thing promised verse eight but but oversight show me present. Let me hear joy and gladness.

Let the bones that you have broken with choice of your broken bone, overcame his rage.

Verbrugge were that you use to describe the feeling that moment beaver choice now but David says I rejoice because that breaking was a part of my healing. You can tell when there's a house that's Bonaparte. You can tell whether the owner what he plans to do that by the size of the tools he uses on that house. The wrecking ball events to destroy if there's chisel. He intends to restore Jesus took the wrecking ball of our sin so that God can use the chisel on you and what happens is he breaks your heart break your bones heal. His goal is your deliverance not your destruction. This goal is your healing not your condemnation is the voice of the shepherd bled and died for your sin was resurrected to making new calling. Use income I can make all things new.
