Consequences

Katie Greer what I am hoping to show you the sweep of the life of David does have consequences.

Painful consequences. In one of my burdens just to try and show open some of your eyes because you were on the point of making decisions that in some ways reverse I'm only been an edge cross, our sins are forgiven and when we surrender to Jesus, there's no condemnation left for eyes.

So the question many had is why does sin still create consequences that topic today as Pastor JD degree or continues our study in the book of second Samuel were looking at the tragic results of David sent with Bathsheba in the hope of the gospel that shines through it all. Pastor Janie titled this message. Consequences what about or the concert sale now, all this realized that sins even when they are forgiven still have consequences.

Say for example tomorrow night you write your small group and one guy in your small group request prayer that you would see went on Wednesday nights now just annoys you for a couple reasons. One, you're pretty sure that God is a Duke fan even though they chose his enemy as their mascot okay to say no. You're pretty sure that he's a big fan and secondly while you are pretty sure you agree that it will take an act of God in order for UNC to win on Wednesday night.

You just don't think that it is appropriate to pray about things like that.

So in a very humble gracious way because that's always the word that I used to describe fans as humble and gracious you correct this person and tell them that's on request. Of course, Carolina fans obnoxious.

Are you guys getting a big argument together and are shouting in the WordStar hole and did you face get thrown around and next thing you know, you lose it and you all love and you punch this guy in the face. I know he gets a black I am in the process you break your wrist later. Later you calm down, he calms down. You guys asked forgiveness.

You guys need a hug hug and kiss and make up you hug it out, God forgives you for you realize that your unity in Christ is greater even than your rivalry is words and and you asked for forgiveness… Forgives you for that sin and they forgive you for that sin. That's very obviously we'll get that that even after sins are forgiven, there are still consequences but for some reason, you will afford you with that when I start thinking about how their lives are unfolding. So what I want to show you try to show you this morning is what the consequences of sin often look like and want to try to show you what God's grace does and does not do it through this consequences.

What I am hoping to show you this way for the life of David is that sin does have consequences. Painful consequences. In one of my burdens. You this morning is to try and show you open some of your eyes because you are on the brink of making decisions that in some ways are irreversible and then I want to try to on the other hand, so those of you who have made those decisions, how God's grace is greater even than your sin and that God has a way of taking even our most tragic decisions and re-weaving them for his glory and for our good, that God can take even your own sin. Stupidity and work it out according to his grace and according to his perfect plan. He turned the cross into the resurrection and he can take your pain and turn it into trial.

That's my delimiter when I prejudge that both sides to make payments in real without the little pull some of you back from the brink of disaster. At the same time that the clip of disaster that you have a little bit of hope that a little bit of a lot of hope to see how God's grace is working in and through that, that's the dilemma and what I'm trying to do today. They had a kid out of wedlock and the David had her husband killed so chapter 12 verse 13.

The prophet tells Nathan on she made about those that I got about God is put away your sin, David shall not die, then Nathan goes on to tell him. Three other things at that are the consequences of that sin, you are forgiven you will not die but verse 10 sword shall never depart from your house. Verse 11. Your wives shall be unfaithful to you. Verse 14, the son born to you from this affair will die in the next five chapters are to show you how all that plays out before chapter 12 is over David's newborn son is dead and David experiences a pain like nothing he has ever known. I have watched some of you in the search of watch personally, you go to the deal with the loss of a newborn child and I know that that is some of the deepest pain on earth.

David goes through that. Then the next five chapters are to see David's family turned into basically a Jerry Springer show. Let me describe in a few words, what happens in David's family and these next five chapters ready, adultery, murder, inset, sexual harassment, sexual abuse, rape, substance abuse, one brother murders another one step moms leverage their kids against one another uses one of her sons for two years and another one for five. One of David's son steeled his dad's house and sleeps with a few of his stepmom's vicious infighting over the family inheritance, but it will last time this was some in the crowd shouted out, David needs a small group. I feel like David can probably compete with the best of you in here when it comes to dysfunctional families. Now these 5 Chapters Way too much for me to read, so I missed you walk you through and summarize most of it. Take a single 13 David's firstborn son is named Amnon.

He developed a rather perverse crush on his son. His half-sister Taymor and he wants her so bad he can't even eat now if you recall, I preach the whole sermon on that story and I don't do that again but if you want to go deeper you go back down with that message and listen to it but basically what it is recap the highlights for your low point, Amnon hatches a plaque where he can get his half-sister Taymor alone, and any rights or after the chapter says that he raped her.

Verse 15 he hated her so that the hate with which he hated her was more intense even than the level at which he loved her, and happy razor. Verse 17 he says put this woman out in our presence and pulled the door after that stop limit, you see a little phrase this woman where have you heard that before.

That's exactly right David Bathsheba even when David would come up with his plans with Bathsheba. He referred to is this woman and one of the service of this woman is this not Bathsheba who is the wife of Uriah and the daughter of so-and-so and what I showed you is that the writer is trying to say to David or the service on say David, this is not just the physical pleasure to some of his wife, Mrs. somebody's daughter somebody's mother.

This is not a body you're enjoying this is a life you're tampering with. You see what happened.

Amnon David son is just repeating. David said the sand that is sown by the father is harvested in the life of the child.

That happens a lot. The other question that this story presents to you right off the bat is where is David and all of this is totally disconnected. I mean he's around you can see that he actually helped set up the encounter between a 90 day mark but is totally disconnected and clueless as to what happening in the life of his children after she raped he finds out about it and guess what he does nothing. Verse 21 says he was angry about the situation but he never confronted Amnon and he never dealt with. Jeevan is pretty sad pathetic verse 13 she can put confidence or datacenter justice. Just as my dad is a just man is a brave man.

My dad is the one who face Goliath. My dad will do the right thing.

My data protect me. But the man of courage would set up the Goliath did nothing for his little girl. Why why why Absalom who is Taymor's full brother realize we have multiple wives, complex okay so which one the reasons we got a great do not have multiple wives. Taymor and Absalom full brother sister who lives a mom and dad you got Amnon, who David is also his daddy so he's the half-brother of Taymor's got a different mom so we have not whole but Absalom is the full brother of Taymor. He hears about all of this and he can't believe what is happened to his sister and he cannot believe that nobody especially his daddy didn't do anything about. By the way, we know that Absalom who lost a mom enough to reasons.

One is that she was raped he took her into his house for the rest of her life. Number two.

We also know that later he would name one of his children. Taymor in honor of her memory, but because David does nothing. Absalom starts to plot vengeance on Amnon chapter 13 verse 28 says that eventually Absalom got Amnon away from the palace got them drunk and then murdered him again was that someone getting somebody drunk and then murdering them with a writer showing Davidson's been reproducing the life of his children. The sin sown by the father is harvested in the life of the child.

So after Absalom murders Amnon. He flees for his life. Three years he's gone. David knows exactly where he is but never one time goes after them, or even sends word to him. Eventually Joab who is basically the captain of David's army comes David and said they would let me bring your son back.

David finally consents and Joab brings Absalom back to Jerusalem. Chapter 14 verse 24 jumped on their Absalom comes back into Jerusalem is my goal for three years comes all the way up to the palace were David lives. David makes what I believe is one of the biggest mistakes of his life. He refuses to see Absalom sends a message Absalom says telling to go to his own house.

I don't want to see his face, and for two years. He refuses to speak about these two years, Absalom sending messages to David for Joab without Facebook basically like David mantra Terry and he keeps requesting through Joab an audience with his daddy but Joab will return his phone calls because he knows the David and want to see Absalom to chapter 14 verse 30 Absalom sets Joab's fields on fire which makes me laugh. I like Absalom got us what's happening without any child psychologist will tell you what's happening there is child starts acting up. You don't dress like a prostitute buried himself in his work a lot of time just to try get Danny's attention for a lot of you that's what's happening now just sitting there fields on fire talk is the person is trying to get your attention. You better wake up David. Eventually David allows Allison back and was present for the never have a conversation store right David, it what what many dad what many of your debts did what some of you doing with your children just gloss over gloss over and ignore just moved on to Absalom against the plot against his father to take the kingdom from his daddy. By the way, that happens a lot of father-son relationships because of his deep disappointment in his daddy's deep love and admiration for his daddy turned into hatred.

Now if you think you should know that Absalom personal chapter 14 tells us that he was tall and he was good looking. Verse 29 for she had beautiful long hair cut it once a year and every year we cut it when he cut off a 5 pounds that's impressive Absalom start standing outside of his father's palace people would come to seeking David to present a case where the needed justice, Absalom will be like yeah man, you're probably never to be able see David is like 15 layers when you and him. I mean David is not he's untouchable he's unavailable. He's probably hanging on the balcony. If you know what I mean you know you brought it home and check on your wife. What will you tell me what's wrong and Absalom lists the look in their eyes, active listening touch their hand while they talk and not his head.

Man that you're right. You have been wrong. I feel your pain. I do anything man if I were judge in Israel. It would be like that she be able talk right to me as I care about you and I want to be a part of your life.

Chapter 15 verse five says that when when whenever people would see Absalom because he was the king son protocol was they needed about house. They would bow down finance as good not what you doing brother stand up and hug and kiss on the cheek said brother you just like me will save me and you server 615 says so Absalom stole the hearts of all Israel, and then when the time is right. He states his coup and drove David out of the palace and it says is a show of power. He set up a pavilion on the roof and slept some of David's wives. The David left behind. The palace, which is not so much like an X-rated movie as it is just public humiliation of David to let everybody know that he had stolen his daddy's thing no miss what happened. Absalom steals everything a man has and sleeps with his wives on the roof you see what is happening. Absalom is just repeating this daddy said the sin sown by the father is harvested in the life of the child. In fact, a little irony. He's doing it in the very place from which David had hatched his plan with Bathsheba. Chapter 15 verse 30 says that David begins to flee for his life from Absalom up the Mount of olives weeping as he went there tomatoes lost his kingdom.

He lost his family and I was running away weeping illicitly. Where is the guy who stood up to Goliath with such confidence in God is run away, weeping is another interesting scene that takes place next jumped 16 over there visit as David is running away as he fleeing Jerusalem is getting CBI was one of the grandsons of Saul 60 verse five, he walked on the road beside David as David was sleep in the sky cursed David continually pelted David with stones to see the Lord is given the kingdom into the head of your son Absalom see your evil was on your Humana blood wanted David's guard said burst not David, let me shut that dog up and go over and take off his head. But in this chapter David and why believe that anymore doesn't really she's not living in the full awareness of that that truth is no longer captivated his soul. He is living with a guilt complex and he's living under a sense of condemnation. In other words, he's lost touch with the gospel, but in case you that at the end of the story and will try to show you the David's problem throughout all these chapters is that he is not living in the new reality and hope of the gospel.

The gospel has not completely transformed either how he sees himself, or how he relates to his sons because he is lost touch with the gospel. That's one of the reasons that these consequences keep unfolding in front of him and he seems powerless to stop them will come back to the rebel forces finish the story. Eventually the tide turns.

And David is able to muster enough of his army to go and take back his kingdom.

Absalom and his followers are driven out into the wilderness. The Army chases after them, but David is the Army's chasing Absalom's lien soldiers. He gives them explicit instruction. Verse 13 the king was shaken shake shake it like that crushing realization that you have when somebody dies of all the things that you never be able to do again shaken because you realize that now something to happen.

You never go back. You know the David's thinking about Absalom playing on the floor in front of them.

When Absalom was three years old think that at the time to be Goliath again shaken thinking about the time it should use a slingshot shaken, thinking about all the bad decisions all the missed opportunities. Things never be able tell Absalom many calls Absalom something that he had never before called him in the story. Verse 30 3C as he went weeping. He said all my house sometime. My son is the first time in this whole story. The David is use the word son for Absalom now is always been the young man the writer is trying to show you is that for the first time David is feeling the emotions of the day to like this.

Is this one that I died instead of you all.

Absalom assignments is almost impossible for me to represent to you the intensity of emotion that is in that verse last week that in Hebrew, whatever they're trying to show you intense emotion just repeat the title to a David friend, God is God all God assures you that this is a soul cry times he repeats the phrase my son the writers try to show you this is something coming from the bottom of it. So this is a pain like nothing. David's ever experienced five times. My son, my son didn't do anything to help you. My son and so ends this tragic story of David and the son Absalom knowing the questions that you should always ask yourself whenever you read a biblical story is why gender why is the story included will clearly it's in there to show us the consequences of sin and to warn us for making decisions that sometimes some ways are reversible and yes it is in there to show especially you men to be proactive in your families can't wait till it's all done by and say before you can get either of those applications listen before you can get to that, at least in a helpful way to see that the story has a much more primal this morning.
