The show where America is the store and the American people search for the American stories podcast to the iHeartRadio at forever you get your butt up next. The story from the South Carolina military Museum in Columbia, the state capital.

The first successful submarine attack on February 17, 1864 was only partial success when it was all said and done, the USS Housatonic laid on the bottom of Charleston Harbor, but so did the sub. The CSS on John Freeman with the store and the homily wasn't built here. It wasn't even the first submersible type craft used by the Confederacy. So I had something else, David was called a semisubmersible.

It was about Road really low in the water and because of that will be difficult to detect difficult but if a couple of little feet about the honey supported his take a torpedo which torpedoes at the time of more minds and not relevant when inside ships while the Hunley was built elsewhere brought Charleston my hair for testing actually was hopeful that after testing it could break the blockade was going off the harbor complete and so when initially built, there was actually a floating line behind him and what they thought they would do as they would paddle road was it was a person powered was.

It was like a crankshaft. They were all sitting there hunched over insulting and they're working with her arms get this thing go. Manpower is with the solicitors go out of the harbor entrance fleet which wasn't in the harbor is outside of the harvest of the fleet was offshore and in them when they got close, they would actually submerge and then they would drag this mine which is floating in the side of the ship to destroy the ship well during training. The villas at one point during trying times the King. They turned around and looked behind the boat with us on the surface of the mine was coming up on pretty fast as I will hang on. This might be a bad idea would be to blow ourselves out so they did is excellent to us bar system at the front of the Hunley for the longest time I member as a kid I grew up in Charleston there was a reproduction of the home in front of the trust had disbarment at the top of the Hunley and you can still find tons of publications and photos and paintings of the smart methods that talk Hunley about sticking straight and when that happened and selection when they recovered the Hunley Harbor.

The bar is not the bottom, stuck up with more of an angle to the bottom so they went to apartments on the bottom. Unfortunately, there were some there some accidents during training. I think you lost multiple crews were something that happened the billows would leak or hatch would somehow be left open fire call and flood screws that always go out was to violate and leave it always go out that I was recovered and I was managed so the nights. The night of the attack, the crew, and there I want to say one of the members is Dixon's is the name of the commander of the boat away.

So Dixon seen, is that you got a gold coin in his pocket ghost on the battlefield, he received a shot in the gold coin actually caught the bullet and prevent it from him losing him losing appendage or something like that. Actually may have saved his life to keep his good luck charm gold coin that skulked out and cut the top so they go out and have signals to the shore of when the living and successful just so they have some form of communication.

Sure Hunley so it's nighttime. Throwing out the fleet and out at the fleet is the Housatonic which is a fairly large but with pretty big guns so the Hunley won't actually approach including underwater. Otherwise I have no idea what they were going to have these little conning tower is visible less viewpoints on so the Confederacy with a going so that they start approaching Housatonic when lookouts sees it and raises the alarm and never getting heavy fire, like cannons on small arms fire within the whole boat dishes shuttered by a blast and actually goes down a decent short amount of time. Well, the Hunley is never seen again. However lookouts on the coast claim that they see the lights from the Hunley signaling that they're going to return, which is what this part of the mystery of never shows up never returns to the sink. Some people believe that maybe small arms fire penetrated one of those lookout portholes water and sunk some think that when the blast went off supposed to happen is the mine hits the side of the boat and then Hunley actually kicks the road arms the other way and the start backing away from the Housatonic and the sexy rope comes out. And as that rope.

It's a certain point there safe distance away supposed to go off the side of the boat, so the thinking well maybe when often impact. Maybe it went off before supposed to actually because the effects of the crystal glass of water's devastating body that caused it may be something small and smart. No one knows but doesn't explain the supposed lights of the lookouts all on short act was after Housatonic with a sunk see the light coming in.

So it's always been a bit of a mystery and where sunk as well in the finding of it is also an interesting story itself is to claims to find the Hunley Elise Bentz claims without a magnetic anomaly in the location of the Hunley was found and therefore he found Hunley another one is by big money bookseller client customer also claims he's the one whose fountain fountain is actually who funded a lot of thing up like that so he tends to like but spent still claims he's the one who found Hunley.

To this day.

Anyway, skipping the end of it. I believe the Hunley is now done with conservation their actual get on permanent display sometime in the years in the process of going through you know they have to be delicate because his remains become a 200 years. When going through the remains going through and cleaning up inside.

If I'm a gold coin and the gold coin actually has the bullet template because never knew that was actually truthful was always a metaphysical edges immunity and take it with them. We went about finding the coin and the boat was sort of possible story that took it with area still some debate about how it sunk exactly, but they do not stand as the first submarine in history and a terrific job in the storytelling in the production first successful submarine attack more interesting things you learn right here on our American story.
