Some of our favorites and man.

They just keep coming up next. We have a piece from one of our regular contributors Stephen resending that this piece was published in his local newspaper story is entitled lessons from Hooverville. It's about a devastating flash flood that severely damage Stephen's church and the surprising response from the community. Stephen asked the director of music at the pack at Community Church Daniel Mullins read the story for us. Here's Daniel.

It was an image that I just couldn't shake the residence of Hooverville had come together on that Christmas morning, knowing full well overnight the Grinch had absconded with their gifts, but still they gathered as a community of faith and hope and love, all the while choosing to look beyond the previous night's somber circumstances, focusing instead on the present focusing on what needed to be done, and most importantly, focusing on everything that truly mattered. I couldn't help but notice the similarities between Dr. Seuss's imaginary morning in the book how the Grinch still Christmas and the real-life morning at the packet at Community Church which is 14 hours earlier, a sudden flash flood had triggered unbelievably powerful waves of dirt filled water containing copious amounts of mulch leaves logs to come crashing through the church is downstairs windows and likewise through the windows of the attached Cooperative nursery school.

It was a flood so intense and so fast-moving that within seconds. It had completely destroyed the church offices, classrooms, files and everything else in its path. The volunteers arrived that sunny Monday morning en masse, congregants and extended family members, parents whose children attended the school and their teachers to assorted friends and neighbors contractors volunteering their time and expertise. So many people, many of whom we didn't know all responding to lend a hand.

They came out that morning with buckets and mops with boots and bleach with cases of water and food all wishing to help to save the place where they been confirmed or married or attended scout meetings with her food pantry donations help to feed the hungry, and whether used books were given a second life with less fortunate children, a place where the youngest members of the congregation were baptized or later in life, memorialized it was a place that for so long and meant so much to so many and so they came and just like the residence of Hooverville, rather than reflecting upon the events of the previous night. They simply got down to the business of addressing what it was that had brought them together in the first place. They shoveled and swept away the mug that was now littered with pages of sheet music from church programs and pageants passed. They hoisted files and furniture, children's books and Bibles carpets and pieces of the walls computers in a copier all now ruined banished to an ever-growing mountain of soggy wet contaminated trash just outside the breezeway school entrances but maybe most surprisingly, of all in the school where volunteers were already engaged in the early stages of cleanup and likewise throughout the downstairs of the formally flooded church there could be heard the sounds of laughter talking and of teamwork. The volunteers sweaty and mud covered were creating miracles by the minute reclaiming what had been damaged and what could be salvaged. All the while acknowledging that for as bad as it was, it could've been worse. Oddly enough, and in so much as it would have been justified. There were no tears shed that morning in the fictional village of Hooverville or likewise that morning in the real world in a place called the packet at Community Church but of course many of us came close, surveying the moving army of muddy volunteers in motion from just outside the building. One church elder admitted to me how much he felt like crying but in truth his emotions what the result of any damages done.

Instead, he said they had everything to do with the tremendous outpouring of love and support that the two of us even as we stood there witnessing.

He added that when his tears begin as he knew they eventually would what we were watching the reason I completely understood. The work is ongoing and that's okay but until the restoration is complete and a sense of normalcy. One day returns. I know that at least for a while. A certain image will never be far from my thoughts and who could have never thought that a children's story presented in rhymed verse could have provided such a relevant message of hope for so many volunteers doing such remarkable things at my church lessons learned from Hooverville. Imagine that a special thanks to Daniel Mullins, the director of music the packet at Community Church performing that these Stephen resending that for writing it, and to faith for producing it our own faith that such great work here and my goodness these kinds of stories we love to tell those tears that were being shed wasn't because of the damage and carnage. They'd seen because of the voluntarism and the grace and love that there witnessing and that happens across this great country all the time every day and we love bringing stories like this to America and across this great country.

Now Robbie brings us the story of Jason Wolf created the first online coupon site was the first to seriously develop software attract web browsing using what are known as cookie. Jason is here to bring us the story of becoming the father that he never had himself used Jason know why I think my very first memories were when I was living in Virginia. My dad worked and lived in a place called rust, which was like a new suburb of Washington DC back then.

I can remember having a bike and learning how to ride a bike.

My dad must've been maybe three or four remember going down this little hill that is pushing me down and no sickly being scared and then happy to. My earliest memory, something that happened in my life that I remember that was like little thing probably when my mom and dad got separated by then was 1975 S. six or so and I can remember my dad driving at a Volkswagen like attestation loaded all the Southington's Volkswagen drove up to Connecticut and all of us meeting my brother and sister not drove us up to Connecticut drop this off with my grandparents.

My mom my mom was acting strange and that he left and that was the beginning of the divorce and shortly after that my mom turned out later I found out my mom had mental illness and so she was put into a mental institution for couple years so for a couple years after my dad dropped us off from almost no going through trying to get herself back together. Yet those are those that that's probably the next milestone in my life. I could remember when my mother was there trying to get her to take her into the station. Whatever she was away for couple years and they somehow couldn't get her. She's elusive and I can remember my sister and I going to this hospital and they were getting her there under some other guys some other trick to getting show up shows off my sister and I are sitting in our probably older, such as and I remember the week they had my sister and I playing three games outside this room and armor piercing scream look over his mother running towards me with his straitjacket because her, put into straitjacket and that was like kinda crazy from then over the next course couple years I was a grandparents I lived with finance for a little bit and eventually moved in with uncle and mom came out of the institution tried to take us back to back on her feet living and sort of welfare life.

Not a lot of money for member Christmas very vividly when I was around nine. At this point and just laying on her blanket with no heat in the house and getting a knock at the door and at the door was looked out the door was a box with frozen turkey and some games for us and we could cook the turkey with no gas. When life so were the poor people were there with a guy called the Iraqis know the Iraqis town literal raggedy important stuff that was us, and so that and then living with an uncle and then having to make a decision when I was about 10 whether I want to go this new school that they discovered that this non-that we were going to a church. I told my grandmother about town Hershey Pennsylvania school for the time it was voice Boy Scout is converting overtaxed girls. It was the late 70s 79 or so and we went out took the test came back my brother and my brother didn't pass the test. I did and they asked me to remember standing at Michael's house in the second floor asked me do you want to go to school you want to go with your uncle and uncle to go to California and I decided to go to school alone by myself was usually as God's was a God moment. There's no real reason for me to choose to not go with my family but I chose to go with my family to go down to the Hershey school and so on September 20, 1980 was a fall day, crisp out football season Sunday. Remember, just like yesterday and I could feel the air right now and being dropped off no Hershey school and my mother and my grandparents were there and inside this place called rotunda huge building Hershey school and I commend Mr. Long standing there with me was the person at the intake of children coming to school. I can remember sending this along. Looking at my parents as my mother by now. I thought my dad was dead because my mom told us he was not alive.

So there pay child support. We really thought it was so see my mother cry my grandparents standing there. Then they walk away and I'm alone and realizing them alone for long time thereafter growing up that school never, not even a few months into it. Maybe crying every night myself to sleep. Started to try to use to the school at the time was a you know corporal punishment was not something that happened just happened right as part of discipline and I can remember running away really paddled. Remember these things that I was a used scary and I cried and I did want to be there, but I learned to adapt to change to figure things out.

Eventually I did and eventually excelled. I became played three sports, football, baseball, wrestling, some of them I was Some of the Teams I Excelled in My Greater Always Good. I Was in Top Class, Probably the Top You Know Handful of Kids and Then Went on to College for College Are Sitting at Graduation Day. Next Moment Was Just Sitting There and It out with a Suitcase or Close 100 Bucks Because They Give You a Check.

At the Time Hundred Dollars. I Think My Was Less Than 100 Because I School Something for Something That I Know and I Couldn't Cash a Check Because I Have a Bank Account and Had a Suitcase of Brand-New Close No. Three Pairs of Socks Temporarily. Doors like That and See No I'm Saying There Was This Big Suitcase Close This Check I Can't Cash and My Grandfather Had a Stroke so He Was on the Last Months of His Life.

My Mother Was Always No Dysfunctional. I Was Really Sure What. So I Went up to Connecticut and I Stay with My Grandmother to Help Her to Take Her My Grandfather until He Died. He Passed Away within a Couple Months. I Think That College I Wasn't Sure What Else to Do and so I Got Involved in.

Like A Lot Of Things That Somebody Who Has No Family Really Who Has No Direction, No Male Mentorship Christ Not in My Life to Large Measure, and so I Got Involved in Things That Were Illegal and I Didn't.

Do You Know, I Know Not Proud about It but There's Stretch My Life Right There That I Was Glad I Was, Going down the Wrong Roads and Thankfully Jason.

After a Number of Setbacks in a Moment of Clarity and after Years of Hard Work He Created the First Website Ever and Then the First Real Software to Use Cookies to Track Web Browsing, Which He Sold for Roughly $22 Million.

Jason's Childhood Was Anything but Easy Mother Was Institutionalized, His Father Leaving and Later Dying or At Least That's What Young Jason Was Told down the Road.

Jason Had a Son and Got Married.

Unfortunately, That Ended after A Few Years, and Jason Found Himself in the Middle of a Divorce Use Jason Tells the Rest of the Store so during the Divorce and after the Divorce.

It Was Time for Me.

I Think to When God Started Knocking on My Door and Say Hey, All the Stuff You Gotta Do You Gotta Be Starting to Change the Way You Live and Put God First. Even Though the Divorce Wasn't Fond of Financially Was a Mass Company during the Time I Was Married to Begin Marital Asset That Was a Big Problem in but I Started to Go to Church More. I Started Those You Don't Invite into a Men's Group and I Started This Journey to Change My Life to Bring Me As a Man More Towards Christ in a Real Way, As Opposed to Saying That I'm a Christian. When I Got the Worst. It Was Easy for No the Lawyers to Say Hey You Know What Just Kinda Settle This Disagreement and Sign Papers.

Honestly, That Is Saying That I Have the Legal Legal Management Primerica Statement Prepared to Discuss Legal Custody. All I Just Knew Was like Yeah You Know I Quickly Figured out Because I Didn't Have Equal Physical and Legal Custody. I Had Sort of Visitation Rights.

I Think That's Terrible for That Time Was for Me and I Had to Then Try to Argue with the Court That I Could Be an Equal Father Wanted to Be Equal in Morse Life As Mom Tried to Stop That. So for Years from 2006 All the Way up to 2011 We Fought for Custody and Eventually the 2010, the Government, Tom Rundell Is Leaving Office in the Put a Change to the Law of the Thing about Parental Equal Custody at the Time I Had to Prove That I Was a Father I Was Proof That I Was, Instead of Just Automatically Giving Equal Custody and the Disapproving the Other Person Could. So When He Did That Allowed Me to Have 50-50 Custody.

It Was Wonderful Thing and I Think That's How It Always Was so Took Years for Me to Fight for Him to Drink to Spin His Life and He Was Big Part of My Life. We Spent Get Remarried until 2070 so for 10 Years. It Was Just More Sly My Dog Toby, Our Dog Toby and You Know I Spent A Lot Of Time with Him. I Focus on Morris. I Did Some Work with My I Was Involved in the School Was Involved with His Doctors.

I Was Equally Involved Father As It Should Be and I Love That I Love to Be Involved in His Life.

He's Older Now, 15, 16 Kids Change Does One Listen to Me As Much As He Did before.

But That's Okay since That I Did Get Remarried and We Have Fostered and We Have Adopted We Have Two Girls Now That We've Adopted Danielle Five and a Marigold State How We Got Them When They Were Three and Three and Six Is so so We Love Them. We Have Two New Girls, We Have a Boy Right Now to Fosters and Jeremiah and Jeremiah.

We Hope Eventually Will Be Our Son. And so Our Family Went from Just Morse Minor Dog to Susan, My Wonderful Wife Danielle Marigold Morris Jeremiah the Dogs and My Wife Loves Animals. We Have a Donkey Go to Goats and Pony so Things Are Expanded All the Struggles, All These Challenges That I Have. I Learned Later in Life That You Know It Was God Banging on My Heart.

My Heart Was Getting Broken over and over and over and It Was Because God Wanted to Get into My Heart. My Heart Was Hard, so I Think the Struggles Have Made My Heart Soft Any Softer, Gentler Heart Was Needed. When Jason Had to Face the Man He'd Grown up Thinking Was Dead. The Man Who Left His Family When He Was Six. His Own Father. So I Found out My Dad Was Alive. 19 to. I Was 22 Years Old 21 Years Old. I Was in College and Thought It Was a Lively Sent Letters to My Grandmother Who Would Tell Us Where He Was.

She Would Send Letters to Father and Lo And Behold Wasn't Dead, He Lived in New Zealand a Whole Different Life and I Ended up Going down to Meeting Him When I Was 23 and Spent about a Month with Them. Got to Know a Little Bit and over the Course of a Couple Years of the More but I Wasn't with Christ yet. So What I Decide to Do Was to Say My Dad Listen I Don't Forgive You Unless You Apologize Need to Apologize to My Mom Just My Grandmother Because I Am the Judge.

I Leave It up to Gotta Lift up Myself on the Dictate the Situation Immediately Sent a Letter to My Mom and My Grandmother and Now My Grandmother, My Mother Knows Where He Lives Right so Now the Sense of Loss, Mom Soon My Dad Because He Never Paid Child Support, Dad Wanted and the United States Can Come Back Here and If You Did He Go to Jail and Had a Judgment against $418,000 in Back Child Support and Interest in so He Could Come Back and It Was Because of Me That Happened and Because of My Thought That I Needed to Tell Somebody What to Do. I Need to Be the Judge of Somebody Else That Caused Pain. I Felt Bad about That.

So When I Sold Glass Company 2016 I Hired a Lawyer and I Found the Documents down Virginia.

The Divorce Documents between Mom and Dad Found the Settlement Amount Are the Mouth They Had Leaned against My Dad and I Went to Connecticut Met with Mom and Convince Her to Allow Me to Pay Her On Behalf Of My Father so I Will Pay Her Firehouse. It's Time. The House Is Worth 100,000.

I Gave Her 200,000.

I Gave Her a Commitment of $2000 a Month over the Rest of Her Life and Some Other Stuff in Exchange for Her Releasing My Father of That That He Owed Her and She Did and so It Was a Proud Moment for Me to Deal to My Dad. Hey Listen I Settled Your Debt to My Mom and I Was Able to Live That out Because My Faith. Now My Father All His Years Was Not Very Close to Four. I Don't Think I Think Is Probably an Atheist or Agnostic, Agnostic, at Best. In the Last Several Years. He Married Somebody.

Rebecca Was a Christian Now My Dad. I like the 75 Years Old Is Going to Church and He's in a in a Small Group at Church to Make This Stuff up. And so It's Been It's Been Really a Great Journey for Me with My Dad. You Know I Forgave Him.

Forgive Him in the Right Way. Forgive Him Because of Me Telling What You Are Forgiven Because Christ Forgave Me and I Think That's Been Special for Me and What a Remarkable Piece of Storytelling.

Thanks to Robbie for Producing the Piece, and a Special Thanks Also to Jason Wolf for Sharing His Story. My Goodness Being Abandoned by His Father. The Mental Illness of His Mother Being Alone All the Time Then the Divorce Then the Fight to Get Equal Custody of His Son and He Found His Dad the Age of 22 Tried to Reconcile Forgave Him Incorrectly. The First Time Incorrectly. The Second Changed Everything.

Perhaps a Great Gene of Wisdom Passed from My Grandfather, Uncle Bud and My Mother Threw Me to Asher's Office One Day and Two-year-old Son in the Middle of Listening to Sing a Song Detailing a Method of Keeping White Men from Thinking That It's a Black Women Song Which Reportedly Encouraged Mick Jagger to Pursue a Life of Music Were Thrust Back into the Present. As If on Cue, Practically by the Hand of an All-Knowing God Determined to Restore Humility to My Large Head from the Latest Family Thinker Asher Badly Fallen and Cracked His Young and Still Small Head on the Counter of Pincus 1950s Art Deco Diner Style Table. Uncle Bob Matter-Of-Factly Asked If We Needed to Go to the Emergency Room for Stitches. Upon Closer Inspection, Not Necessary, but I Could See the Tina Was Not Totally Convinced That Was Concerned about Scarring. We Decided That Call to His Friend in Delaware Would Give Us More Information by Which to Make a Decision. We Concluded the Butterfly Bandages Would Be Adequate for This Crisis. The Last Thing I Wanted to Spend the Next Six Hours in the ER.

It Was Not What I Wanted Our Kids to Remember about Their Trip to Visit Their Uncle Bob, Uncle Bud and I Valiantly Volunteered to Drive to the Pharmacy for the Bandages. As I Stood before the Shelf, Searching for the Butterfly Type, I Spotted a Product Called Liquid Bandage Immediately.

My Great Knowledge of Vietnam Tribune Came to Mind. I'd Heard the Superglue Was Originally Invented Battlefield Cuts during the Vietnam Era. I Shared My Wealth of Tribute with Uncle Bud and Decided That in Addition to the Butterfly Bandages Get Some Liquid Bandage so We Left the Store with Nine Dollars Worth of First-Aid Supplies.

We Arrived Back Home at Pincus and Began with Surgical Precision to Repair Asher's Cut – Was Just over His Eyebrow. I Was Concerned about Licking the Liquid Bandage onto His so I Firmly Rested My Pinky under His Eyebrow, Which Also Serve to Close up the Task Which Had Been Suggested by Her Nurse Friends.

We Carefully Applied a Little Liquid Waited. The Suggested 30 or so Seconds for the Bandits to Set a Plan Was Working Beautifully. No Liquid to the No Bleeding, No Gaping Problem As I Relaxed and Began to Loosen My Hold on Asher's Head Began to Whimper.

It Was Then That I Realized the Small Flaw in the Procedure. The Directions Which I Carefully Read Said That the Liquid Flowed Freely until Setting and They Did. It Flowed from the Wound down the Entire Length of My Pinky, My Great Intellectual Ability to Anticipate Possible Effects Had Paid off. The One Small Glitch Was That My Pinky Was Affixed to My Sons Eyebrow.

I Announce My Predicament.

Tina Quickly Resorted to Her Face with an Exclamation of Overlord.

I Recall from the Directions That Some Form of Oil Would Release the Adhesive so As Calmly As Possible. I Requested That Someone Read the Box to Clarify with the Editor Was Mineral Oil or Baby Oil Would Do the Trick. Think I Just Used up the Last of Both Drawing from a Culinary Experience to the Quick Conversion and Rushed into the Midst of the Chaos with All of Fortunately All but A Few Drops Ended up in the Carpet in Asher's Hair. I Was Too Busy to Look. Uncle Bud's Way, but He Was Quiet.

Obviously, Concluding That This Was a Situation Better Left to the Parents. I Hated the Very Idea That He Had Witnessed This at All. Just Only Weeks Previously. They Would Never Have the Audacity to Try to Tell Me How to Raise My Children to Remain True to That Conviction. To the Degree the Situation As Asher Cried and Struggled to Free His Head of My Finger. The Grip between Our Flesh Began to Free and I Could See That and into the Nightmare Was in Sight. With a Little More Coaxing. My Finger Was Free and Asher Had a Layer of Liquid Bandage on His Small Cut in a Short While. He Was Pretty Much Back to His Old Self. We Were All Older Now Women Have Grown in Wisdom, but Needless to Say We Are Always in a Position of Needing More.
