This is when you have even this is our American stories we tell stories about everything here on the show.

Some of our favorite stories about the men and women who serve our nation 24 year career Lockheed SR 71 blackbird spy plane remained the world's fastest and highest flying operational aircraft from 80,000 feet we can serve a 100,000 mi.² of Earth's surface in a mere hour. SR 71 pilot Brian tool recalls in his book the driver applying the world's fastest are a lot of things we couldn't do in SR 71. We were the fastest guys on the block and loved reminding our fellow aviators of this fact made usual with his legendary story known today as the LA speed check all the LA speed story and I just read that one day it was really cool being me. In SR seven on patent law turn I would do in a training mission around the United States. We just rebelled enough hours in time to take off that meal, a tanker in Idaho went on up to Montana zip across Denver.

Hang a right turn Albuquerque out over Los Angeles up to Seattle back in the Sacramento two hours 21 minutes and you just did that for backwards tanker to just gain crew coordination get Bilger hours were on our last training mission over Tucson. I can see downtown LA from Tucson were 89,000 feet. I can see the whole western United States. Bathed in a warm October fall below, I can see the chain of Rocky Mountains from Canada to New Mexico like I can just see the most beautiful picture laid at my feet in the air smooth as glass not engage moving in the cockpit.

It was perfect. I'm thinking we bad I feel sorry for Walter because he has to monitor five radios in the backseats I flip the switch up just to listen and LA centers controlling they control on when you fly Southwest out there. The guys control and everybody above controlled airspace so that they have us on the scope, but they're not talking to us now. This controllers all over the country Jacksonville Center Chicago center Seattle Center. It's the same guy they all talk the same is really cool the way they talk because they make you feel important. As a pilot. They don't just say yeah okay here's your make you feel really cool, so sure enough, there's this is pretty deep yesterday some Cessna guy Heston was ground speed Lysander session on November 10 love you got a ground speed radio course center would like to say who cares get a free talk to Mike is John Glenn since November paying 0 kn on the ground. Sounds like that's how the and make you feel kind cool right after that a twin Bonanza came up to pimp the guy for speed. I guess and LA center twin beach. Whatever you got a ground speed reinforce and center likes the cats Friday, why me God please just get a free talk to Mike is Air Force One twin beach 20 120 kn on the ground and right after that the Navy F-18 out of the more popped up on frequency and you know is a Navy guy because he talked really slick on the radio center testified Tuesday.

Check and I'm thinking wait a minute, testified to you as a ground speed indicator $9 million F-18 cockpits right there in a heads up display.

Why is he calling center to broadcast is getting just the meanest dad's fastest military jet in the valley today were taken on Mount Whitney in rent and across death Valley. We want everyone from Fresno to the coast to know what reels feed. You can almost hear little glean the controllers most likely at putting into this. 626 20 kn across the ground was that across the ground. See that little knife like I hope nobody else has the nerve to get on frequency and it wasn't an airliner from Seattle to San Diego. The want to be next on frequency and etiquette thing among suppliers in a 12-year-old was reaching for the Mike charge the reader safely singleseat. All those years when I'm in the family model now and I like knots and maybe died must die now.

Walter and I want us to be good crew at that moment I heard a click to the mic button in the back seat. These gentlemen well tonight became the crew at that moment is best innocent voice LA center Aspen 30 have you get up grants. If you can almost hear collective gasp on freak like fools didn't hear the previous transmissions that get crushed like a great. It's just the pilot thing, but center had to give you that same voice Aspen trees that we show you 1992 not cross the ground like Walter a lot is when he came back said center were shown little close thousand ladies and gentlemen, we did not hear another trans mission on that frequency thinking he'd lived in the Navy had been flamed in a crew had been formed for just a moment. It was absolutely fun be in the fastest guys in the block. You been listening to major Brian should rule the story of the SR 71 blackbird doing a little speed check so just a little bit. By the way little about shoe 212 combat missions and were shot down the end of the Vietnam War, unable to reject was forced to ride the plane into the jungle, was rescued by Army special forces so badly burned that he was given next to no chance to live. There call your local State Farm agent for quote today returned to our American stories next story a special little boy created the Christopher foundation based out of no-show organization seeks to raise awareness and research on. After cancer support both patients and their families tell the story is Christopher Cooley's mother Kathy was my every sense of the word. He loved to play in the dirt. He loved to do all boy things Klein get in trouble all and just just be a little boy when Christopher was three. Christopher started pausing while he was playing and telling us he was having backache which was odd as I mentioned it to the pediatrician I said Christopher saying he has back pain and stops playing and he said that's not normal for a three-year-old.

Let's check it out. So they checked his kidneys. They did some different things and they finally did a CAT scan and they told us in Joplin that he had a hernia so they made arrangements to see a surgeon in Kansas City and we drove up there.

They wanted an MRI, so we had to be there very early so we left still dark outside, with an overnight bag for all of us. This dad to me and and Christopher and we had an MRI and we went back to the surgery waiting room and the time came and went for surgery and they didn't come get us by that evening. The room had cleared out and the surgeon came to see us and called us into a room and he said I've put you off to the end of the day because this is can be a very big surgery. This is can take 12, possibly 12 8 to 12 hours. It's not hernia your son's cancer and we have five minutes and we've got to get them in and they rock our world. We had five minutes to sit with her little boy and telling he wasn't can be coming out and going home today.

He was gonna be here for a while and we had no idea what we were in for. We were in shock and we just held in he was to be okay came and Connie took him only purchase beside ourselves. We didn't know what to do and what was supposed to be a long surgery within. I think it was three hours they came out and got us and told us that they could not remove the tumor, they got a piece of it so they could send it for pathology and that they were pretty sure something called neuroblastoma temper heard neuroblastoma and had no idea what they said this tumor was the size of a football cut in half and it was wrapped around his heart wrapped around all these major organs so there is no way they could get.

This is a little bit a three-year-old boy with half a football and how is that even possible.

I don't think anything can prepare you for. We had a diagnosis meeting and started our first treatments before we left and then went home and had to completely rearrange our lives.

Christopher just can't be in a normal little boy when he could. We had to go the hospital every month for treatment. His diagnosis was in August in December they they had shrunk the tumor enough, they were able to go in and take. We spent Christmas in the hospital and children's Mercy is a fantastic hospital and they covered Christmas. It was phenomenal think they really made those kids feel special and Christopher was unfortunate because the surgery he was out of it but he got a picture with Santa. Regardless, Santa stood over his bed and took a picture with him and that was very important because that point we had no idea what we are facing. If that would be her last Christmas hospital life was was our life that was all we knew at that point Christopher became friends with all of his nurses. They all loved him. He was a lot of fun to be around.

He always went my Christopher but the nurses and people naturally just assume your Chris so for a long time. The nurses would come in the room and say Christopher to do this. Chris rated that in all the sudden under his breath, he can say to her tougher. She keeps Tommy Chris and the nurses finally started catching under that just thought that was hilarious. In the name eventually didn't call in Chris anymore. They all knew he was Christopher so he he was a lot of fun for them and gave them a hard time. He really enjoyed giving them a lot of teasing at the old children's Mercy when we were first diagnosed you shared a room.

You had roommates that we made the best that we made so many friends and some nights we might decide we can have a movie night so we go drive somewhere in and find out what snacks everybody wanted one, including her roommates. We do whatever we could to make it and show as enjoyable as we could in the hospital. Does that to that music therapy. They have art therapy different things and one day Christopher was they were doing art therapy and he was drawing a picture and after his bone marrow transplant. We had to do some radiation so when they when you have radiation you get tattoos so that they can pinpoint where they need to do the radiation so he had tattoos going down this stomach where some of the radiation had to be an kids with cancer. Also get something called it cat Hickman catheter Hickman catheter is that it's attached directly to one of your main arteries, but it comes out of your body and that has extra tubes were you can put medicines and or draw blood and do everything he had his Hickman catheter*drawn this figure with a Hickman catheter and his radiation tattoos and is his little bellybutton is different things and then he took some of the stuff she had brought in there and started putting these little hearts all around them around this body and he had some feathers that he used it also. We said what he drawing that and and he told us he said that's me. I'm going to be the angel of hearts, and at that point you could've heard a pin drop in the lady who was in there with left the room briefly because it shocked her and we are all look at each other like what is he saying is he know something we don't know what is going on that and he just he never missed a beat.

He just kept on playing and it was like no big deal to him and that was shocked us that I believe he is the angel of hearts stole all our hearts and had a huge heart when he was in hospital because he got to know all these kids and was constantly around these kids when he was there, we would always get a blame gift shop and almost bring them a different balloon just to try and cheer them up and it never failed that we were leaving he always wanted to go to share those bullets. He wanted to brighten somebody else's day so he would take him to different kids in the hospital or if we went and bought movies or if we bought something for him.

He would say we need to buy one for the kids in the hospital to so we always had to buy two because we had to take one to the kids in the hospital to just had a big heart and very empathetic obviously because he was going through too, but he wanted their day to be bright to so he was pretty special in that way, listening to traffic only told the story of her son Christopher and his bout with cancer hospital life was our life listening hospital life is your life, particularly if you have a child struggling stories for you for anyone else from us, but life is your life.

There call your local State Farm agent for quote today and we returned to tell stories story on Christopher: as told by his mother only last left off.

Christopher been diagnosed with pediatric cancer, something that impacts 46 children each school day over 15,000 kids every year. Let's continue with the story where home. He insisted that we got to church at the time we were not Christians. I had grown up in the Catholic Church, but that I wasn't a practicing Christian. We didn't know where to go work on the church.

We tried several churches never found the fit so we talked to some friends of ours that were going to church and we went to that church and how was it that was our church and he got us in the church and he kept us in church and and we all found the Lord because of him and his dad and I were saved and he was saved in. I know God had his hand and that just like he did in drawing this picture of the angel. It was totally not guiding and using Christopher to to write the story mean he touched a lot of people's lives in and in within that church to we did not tell people when we started going to church about Christopher and his cancer. We didn't want people to I don't know how to describe it. We just didn't want Christopher to be the kid with cancer and that's the only reason people have anything to do with them. You know, we just didn't want to. We didn't tell people for a very long time because at that point he was in remission. We were we were in remission.

We didn't have to do any more treatments.

We were getting lots of tests and then when he started kindergarten. One of our church members sent know she was a teacher. She said I want in my class. Great perfect and at that point we kind of shared a little bit about you have to go get tests and make sure in his kindergarten year, he relapsed and it was a challenge again, we didn't. He did it. He was a trooper got in remission a few times and then eventually we were running out of options. We had to start some experimental stuff so they sent us to New York for a monoclonal antibody treatment at Sloan-Kettering in one day they were doing the treatment and date. One of the doctors came through and think they given pain medicine because the pain is.

It's a very painful treatment. He pushed some pain medicine and I went to get a drink and I turned around to go back and I could see that he wasn't breathing and I ran back and he stopped breathing and my husband look at me like you're crazy and then he turned around he wasn't breathing. He had coded so they shoved us out of the room and started respecting resuscitation. Fortunately, another doctor had walked through at the same time and he had some Narcan in his pocket so he gave him some Narcan and they were able to bring them out of it and eventually we did another experimental treatment in Houston. We did vaccine therapy eventually that didn't work either, so we were back at children's Mercy always are home I can't tell you how much we love children's Mercy. After that, he coded in New York.

I was on the phone with the doctors in Kansas City going to help me.

What we do mean they were just the best in the world. In my opinion they cared about us and kept in touch with us the whole time was fantastic. This cancer was getting mad and we were doing radiation and then came home for the weekend because he had started having trouble walking and he was using. We were using adult size wheelchairs and the home health was in the Guinness child care, but they had to deliver to the house. They couldn't Kansas City so we said Marina go home and get the wheelchair this weekend and so we came home and was on a Saturday that they and he told us that they he said not call back Kansas City and we said yeah honey ER where George is here to wheelchair Oregon Nelson we can hear wanted to see people and people stop by people never stop by our house because we live out the country and people just don't come see but that day, people were stop by the CM which was cool and good for him. He got to see people but by that night we knew something wasn't right and any and told us he said I'm not going back and there is another little boy that he had known from Quality Quality is a cat camp for kids with cancer and Christopher would go every summer and Evan another little boy from camp.

He said I'm go to Evans what we were supposed to go to heaven so we can before for her birthday party but we hadn't told Christopher was that Evan had passed away. He said no. Be with us and will get to do that, you know that you can do that synovium plan and by that night we had called the nurse and said something something not and they had told us that his kidneys were shutting down and it just progressively got worse and he the week before. Our church had done it a gospel sing as a fundraiser for him and they had video recorded so he said I will watch the gospel sing so he laid in his room and he watched the gospel sing and they told us it probably wouldn't be long in I don't know what time it was but at some point he got up and he was just great. He felt good.

He's going to bathroom the nurse said hey I think in the morning will go see if we can get maybe there's just a blockage will go get something put in a stent or whatever and Raymond and everybody left. It was great and he came in my bed and we decided to go to my bed and so he lay down in bed with me and his dad and his dad got not to go out the kitchen to do something. Christie wasn't sleeping anyway because he was a nervous wreck and I had fallen asleep and I woke up to Tim telling me that he wasn't breathing.

He waited until everybody left just slipped away on his terms, he made sure it was on his terms, let us put them in the hospital are doing and we were we wouldn't do that anyway.

He he made sure it was the way he wanted me and he knew he when we look back we see all the signs you know in the afternoon.

He had sitting in the living room and he said not yet and he wasn't looking at any of us. He was, cannot not yet, not yet.

And I sent to not get what honey just and I firmly believe he was telling God not yet not ready yet again wait the story of her son Christopher, my goodness brought his family to church and they weren't practicing Christians somehow intuitively knew this was the right thing for his family.

It was for himself and what happened afterwards.

My goodness those words not yet say nothing. Mom was trying to protect her. What he was thinking about when we come back more with Her son story Christopher on Elm can store you guys, this is Tori Jenny with 90210 MG podcasts we have such a special episode brought to you by never attack ODT.

State Farm is in your corner and on like a good neighbor.

There call your local State Farm agent for quote today. We returned stories final portion of the story is told by his mother Last left off. Christopher said. After chance Kathy talking about the importance of reaching out to families going through situations like hers and organization Christopher foundation and her family printed on over some so much for the family short as it was on this earth. One thing I would tell people our friends or family members of someone going through that is, don't give up on. They may not be calling you back, or they may not be answering you right away but they need to know you're there form regardless if there's a huge difference for us. When Chris was first diagnosed our friends. Very few of those are in our life because they disappeared. We heard much from any of them.

Very few of them. We some of but when we started going to church and had different people in our lives.

Those people were there for us every step of the way every step of the way they were, they would drive all the way to Kansas City just to see him and just bring us love packages, snacks or whatever just to let us know that they were there for us and they loved us.

People always say what can I do for you or what do you need or call me if you need something call because you can't think like that you're just living in the moment and doing everything you can to take another breath and get my and sometimes it's so crazy that you can't stop and think I need to call so-and-so and ask a fish, you're most likely not going to ask people for anything, but if people take the initiative and do something, it means a lot. Christopher passed away in February and we knew that Christopher would want us to stop doing things for those kids in the hospital that he still was doing things for buying things so we started just by buying things now buying movies, buying things and then went.you know we need to do more.

We so we discussed with some people about starting the foundation. It was the end of that year when we really started getting it going but in November, Christopher's birthday was November and sometimes it fell on Thanksgiving. Tim and I had talked and I said I don't think I can be in this house on Thanksgiving because it Thanksgiving. It was always a big deal for us because it was his weekend we would whether it was actually on his birthday or not we would be celebrating and eating all weekend long starting at Thanksgiving, so I just don't think I can sit here and so we decided that we were going to hospital. Why can't we we know Christmas is covered great hospital but nobody does anything for Thanksgiving so we made some contacts at the hospital.

He said great.

So we rented a residence in up there we cooked was just just us and the kids.

We cooked turkeys in hand – potatoes and corn, stuffing and gravy and roll something to get done residence in my brother-in-law and his they also rented room and helped but we did that and took at the hospital and we thought, you know we can do this if we start this foundation. This could be something we do every year. So then we started thinking of different things that the hospital didn't do and Easter was a big one for us only backup until the Easter story. Christopher has bone marrow transplant.

We got out right before Easter pictures were important to us, so we wanted that picture with the Easter Bunny. Even though he's not to be around people. He said we at least go to the mall and get a picture with the Easter Bunny and they had to wear these big cumbersome masks. If there ever out in public places long as he has his mask on and take it down for the picture, but we found the mall and when we were there we ran into a mom of one of the kids that we had been in the hospital with and we had found out when we are in transplant. There is always flowers stuff at the nurses desk. We were allowed to have anything in transplant and we started asking questions flowers well this little girl passed away the week before. So here we are at the mall and we just run this mom who hadn't see and we told her how sorry you are that we did know she had been pregnant.

She had the new baby. We see the new baby and we talked about how house that was Elizabeth didn't get to be there and that drove home to us. She was doing the same thing she was getting her picture with Easter Bunny drove home to us how Wharton those pictures are in those things are so. As part of the foundation we wanted to make sure that we could take the money to the hospital and those kids that can't get out could still get that picture those parents could have a picture of their kids with Easter so that's that's another thing we wanted to.

So we started the foundation we had our very first fundraiser in 2002 and we decided we had it.

Christopher passed away on the first Sunday in February so we had it on the first Saturday in February and we headed every year since then.

On the first Saturday in February we always have our annual gospel thing because he love that gospel thing so much.

He was listening to that tape from the gospel sings about why we do a gospel thing every year. Some people with asking why a Gospels because he loved that gospel singing laid there and listen to those groups. Singing was just meant a lot to him and asked that they did that for him. So that's what we do every year we have silent auctions and things to go with it that were part of the original. That's where we get all of our funding. Every years from the gospel thing.

I think one thing I would tell people when your child dies or anybody people quit talking about and that broke our hearts because he still her son and he means the world to us. And there are very few people in our life that still will bring up stories in it so special to us whenever someone will start talking about him and remembering and sharing a story about him with us because we can't make new memories with all we have are those memories and to hear means a lot. So don't be afraid to talk to someone who's lost their child about their child because they want to know you remember they want to know that you thought they were special when we were in New York. We always had to walk to Sloan-Kettering for their only dollhouse and Tim and Christopher were walking ahead of me one day and there is an older gentleman is the: stoops and he came down to me in the street and he said that your son said yes it is. He said there's something very special about him. He said there's just something and arm around him.

He said there's really something special about him. He said I see these kids go I hear all the times that I've never stopped anyone. He said I just want you to know your voice special and that stuck with me forever.

I think sometimes we don't always truly listen to our kids and when it comes to God. I think kids can be so much more in tune sometimes they have such purity of heart and they don't have the jaded vision. We have from being in the world and if you just sit and listen to your kids can learn this little little kid saved his whole family by taking us to church and introducing us to Christ whole different way of life. Sometimes we need to just listen to market job on the production special to Katrina Hein the storytelling is just so special to do after work Christopher did heard from a mom or some Theodore family when her child. She should for anyone. Talking about him or some special people bring up the story about someone lost we don't have memories and by the way, if you want to find out more about the Christopher foundation Angel hearts.org that's Angel of heart toward story of Christopher Cooley told by his mother Kevin here on our American stores.
