We do what we do isn't free to make our American stories. We want to make sure it's always ready to listen to and up next Jeremy Swick, historian curator at the College football Hall of Fame tells us the story of Sgt. stubby street dog turned soldier turn college mascot is German Sgt. stubby of the first worldwide. The hello story of America's most decorated war.so who was Sgt. stubby nobody knows exactly when the dog, later known as Sgt. stubby was born, but is thought to have been during the first half of the first world war he was a dog in certain brain described early news stories is either bull Terrier, Boston Terrier, with a short stature barrel shape and friendly temperament until 1917.

In a study wander the streets in New Haven, Connecticut, scrounging for scraps of food, but he is no ordinary stray just a few years later following the end of the first world war, the tenacious canine would become known as one of the most decorated dogs in American history. Stubby's fortunes change in July 1917 when he began hanging around a group of soldiers.

Members of the hundred and second infantry Regiment as a train on the grounds of Yale University, one of the men 25-year-old private named Robert Conroy took a shine to the young dog and began to take care of him, naming him stubby for his stature and tail. Although the US military didn't yet have an official military working dog program, stubby instincts and charm made him a fan favorite of the Regiment who taught him how to raise his paw in salute. By the time the unit had left for France. Private Conroy had become so devoted to his new furry friend that he actually stole him away in the ship when the commanding officer discovered stubby's presence dog responded instinctively by saluting him. The officer was reportedly rendered speechless by the gesture and the incident secured stubby's place as the unofficial mascot of the Yankee division. Stubby was involved in many battles while stationed overseas. His sharp years and ability to hear the whine of artillery shells before they landed were extremely useful and stubby was particularly helpful in looking for wounded soldiers and no man's land. His sense of smell to men that he could readily detect mustard gas attacks.

He once saved entire company by alerting the men to down the gas masks. He was present for four offensive and 17 battles in total.

While serving for around 18 months of stubby's greatest recorded achievements occurred late one night on the Western front. Stubby captured German spy and save the doughboy which is slang for United States infantrymen from a gas attack. Hearing a sound in the stillness of the night on the Western front. The dog guarded sleeveless late, stole out of the trenches and recognized the German attempts by the German to deceive stubby or futile season. The prisoners buys bridges stubby held on until help arrived. Alerted by the commotion stubby his fellow soldiers were able to capture and imprison the spy for his efforts that night study was issued an iron cross metal that had originally been given to the German spy following the war stubby return home to America. He was with the metal of heroism from the humane education Society and animal retention organization and met with Presidents Woodrow Wilson Calvin Coolidge and Warren G. Harding. After the war he went on and became the mascot for sports team at Georgetown University in Washington DC, where Conroy studied law at the halftime of games. He was given the football to play with in front of the fans he would push the ball with his nose to great fanfare, which is one of the most exciting parts about stubby becoming on a mascot for college football team. After serving family in the first stubby was also given the unofficial rank of a Sgt. a higher rank than his master at the time.

In 1926 stubby died at home. Reportedly, Conroy's arms. Stubby had such a great impact on not only his owner and the Regiment. But really the public as a his obituary was featured in the New York Times and was given 1/2 a column which is made more than many notable people of the time. Stubby's legacy lives on as his body was donated to the Smithsonian Institution where it is currently on display and a special thanks to Jeremy Swick for that terrific piece of storytelling and what a story it was Sgt. stubby was wandering around for food in New Haven doing what stray dogs do looking for the next meal is adopted by the 102nd infantry training at Yale University, which is situated in New Haven and then it's off to war. His views and his nose served vital functions and protecting his fellow comrades in arms, and then life is a mascot at Georgetown University's owner went to Georgetown law and brought stubby with him and the tradition by the way of the mascot living at the dorm of Georgetown University.

You will know and often it's not the rich and the famous or the people that invaded her extraordinary things. And everybody knows about. It's the see ordinary folks in this country doing extraordinary things that brings us the story of Wendy Caldwell's oldest cadet to graduate from Houston's police Academy faith brings us the story.

Wendy Caldwell is a 54-year-old mounted patrol officer.

This is actually a second time working for the Houston Police Department. She first went to the Academy in 1993 graduated that same year he was then assigned to patrol station after having three years of service that I applied went to the mounted patrol unit where I stayed until 1998 and during that time I got married in we had our first child this really felt like it was better calling to stay home and raise the kids. So that's what I did. I chose to resign my position at the Police Department and raise the kids and that's what I did for the next 18 years I got to experience all kinds of things you know you know everything that you you hope you get to see when your kids are growing up there when they say their first word when I when they take their first absent and I got to be that that mom that drove the kids to dance and baseball practice in my privilege to homeschool my kids for a good portion of their academic years and it was much different than being outgoing going to be a full-time mom. Where there is no manual to be in a mother you just are. And you figure it out along the way, if you're lucky you have family and friends that can help you along the way but for the most part it's kind of a steep learning curve you now and you when the kids are little, my kids were 15 months apart.

It's it's it's a lot of work. It's a lot working out. It's not like going to a 9-to-5 job every day.

There's no sick days. There's no time off. There is no vacation days there and there isn't any of that stuff you you are on call 24 seven, 365 days a year, but on the flipside of that, the reward is it's just tremendous. It's it's incredible to I would and I wouldn't have traded it for the world but I did go through a small identity you know shifts there, I realized sitting on the riding lawnmower and summer. One summer day driving around I get to I get to do this and I get to raise my kids and and life is good. So after after being married we were married almost 20 years we were married 20 years at that point because we were married a couple years before we start having children and we went through a really rough time and ended up getting a divorce and that was that was really tough so you know, think about will gosh you know what to do.

I gotta go back to work. What am I going to do. I haven't done anything for the last 18 years, I have some college. I don't have a college degree and my my resume basically says stay at home mom and me.

I 50 almost. I was 52 years of age at the time, and I'm thinking oh my gosh, what manner do. Coincidentally, I was playing softball a coed softball with the group of friends and one of them just happened to be a sergeant in the recruiting division for HPD and I had done some visiting with an old friend of mine from the Harris County Sheriff's Department. She she suggested that I attempt to challenge the T call exam, which is the state licensing exam means I would study and then challenge the applied to challenge the exam and then once I did that I could, I could be certified again and then I would have to have an agency pick up my commission so I was chatting with my recruiting sergeant friend and asked him how difficult he thought it would be do that he says will why you think about coming back and I said well I don't think I'm eligible to come back to HPD and he goes home on a second let me check that. So he checked with his lieutenant and apparently I was eligible there was a gentleman. Coincidentally, that was a brother to a gentleman that I had graduated with the first time in the Academy that came back to the department at the age of 50 and he set precedents for the Police Department that if you were former HPD officer and had left as long as you could fulfill the the all the requirements and do the physical physical training you are eligible to come back and so I was able to come back to HPD with the stipulation that I had to complete the entire six month Academy again so that process began in came back August 29, 2016 and graduated the Academy again and March 16, 2017.

The first time I went through.

I was 29 years of age and graduated at 30 so I was you know back then I was into I get myself a pretty good shape.

I still do. But you know there's there's a big difference between 30 and 50 and most people figure that out as they age.

But the this time around.

It was much more is much more difficult. They had ramped up the physical. The PT portion of the physical training so it was a lot harder than it was last time we did a lot more running. We did a lot more hills. We did you know it was like a basic training Army basic training.

You know we did. We did log carries an all kinds of stuff you know we did fireman carries we did. We did you know the whole gamut of physical training that you would expect to see in any boot camp or police academy training and so my body did not hold up as well. This time I had a lot of I had some tendinitis going on, but I struggled through it and I always maintained where I needed to be and and still still graduated you know 17 at a 67 in my class that included all my scores, my academic my driving my shooting and my physical training as well.

So I thought that was too bad for graduating 53 number 17 in my class being so much everyone we we had a conversation at one point we were in the gym and seven.

Some of the younger ones were talking about some stuff that they were doing and I look them I said wait a minute what year were you born check on about it and not most of them were born in like 93, 94, and I said oh my gosh I was a police officer.

My nickname in the Academy needs to call me mom. At first, I think there were little concerned that I could even make it.

But then, about halfway through the Academy are probably little sooner than that.

They were they were all for me and they they were there and support you know and I was, there it was nice that they they treated me like a mom you know it was nice.

My goodness, you scared to become a mom and then she was scared to become a cop again and that happens in our lives, folks, and that's why we tell you stories like this and from our subjects mounts themselves when we come back more when he called story after these commercial chores can be time-consuming and there's nothing more daunting than facing piles and piles of laundry that need to be done can be overwhelming for anyone. You might be able to delay Medicare enrollment. Depending on your employer coverage. It can seem confusing, but it doesn't have to be UHC Medicare health plans.com to learn more United healthcare helping people live healthier lives, and we continue with the story of Wendy Caldwell should not work for almost 20 years after staying at home with after she got a divorce when we decided to go back to work in PD that would become the oldest graduate from the Academy return to Wendy talking about how the other recruits in the Academy treated raspberry all the time and there was one guy in particular in Houston used to kid me all the time and he say you know when you graduate work in networking to get you a life alert and I set out. Thanks a lot. I appreciate and that he jokingly said one time that goes well maybe if we don't get a life alert will have to get your walker when you graduate and coincidentally I didn't I didn't graduate across the stage on a walker because during the last phase of training. My femur was broken and so I had finished the Academy on a walker.

We actually provoke femur during the final Academy exercise that happened during an exercise called red man, which is the culmination of your physical training for the entire Academy and they basically what are red man does is it prepares you as a new police officer to understand what it feels like to be enough in the fight of your life because a lot of times you'll have recruits that come in that that may have never ever been in a fight in their life. You know a scuffle and most of them have never been punched in the face.

So this is a little just a little taste of that to help you understand what it's like when you're chasing a suspect and catch them and they don't want to be arrested and you guys are fighting that's it's it's it's it's intense it's exhausting and then your fighting under the exhaustion and you know your what it's like to fight with that diminished oxygen and mental capacity what you're thinking is going to be like during that time so it gives you a lot of different things to think about, but it's used as a training tool at the very end of the Academy, so unfortunately during my session. The my red man gave me femur strike with the knee and broke my leg.

Fortunately for me I had completed all of the TECO requirements necessary for the Academy.

With the exception of taking my exam. So at that point it was all he had to do is take the exam to finish the Academy and then graduate which was in two weeks so they were talking about recycling may you know there was was a little scary for me at the time because I the first thought that went through my mind was. I went all this way and I'm not going to get to graduate. I'm I'm good have to do this whole thing again and I I knew in my mind that I physically didn't think I had another six months and to do it. So it was, it was tough.

I mean, it was emotionally. It really it really messed with me a little bit I thought I this can't be happening. So luckily for me my captain at the time over the Academy. She was they talked about in there like I'll know she's done everything. All she has to do is take the exam. My academic scores were there was an issue with that. So I took my my state licensing exam and pass that with flying colors and they allowed me graciously allowed me to graduate with my class. How to be an officer in your 20s different to being a police officer in her 50s.

I think your perspective changes dramatically.

Once you have kids and you realize that you're not this invincible. You're not this invincible person anymore.

You also you have these little human beings take care of so changes your perspective on things a lot here a lot more cautious about things your you know what I also realized that that my age plays little bit more into that factor as well. II I'm not as fast as I used to be, my reflexes are probably not as quick or smarter though, I can see, quicker yeah system.

There's a whole lot of just everything. Your perspective is the biggest change in the whole thing back when I was 30 I was invincible. Now you get up here every day here excited to go to work your running and gunning and love and love in the chase and the thrill of the chase announced like it's fun but I'm not gonna get all excited used to be little more cautious.

How did your kids respond to her going back to the police force.

My kids were awesome.

They were so supportive of me and they really were.

My biggest fans. They really really were my on the really really hard days, you know, I just remember what they that they were there that I was doing this for them.

You know, a lot of it for them when we were very poignant moment for me was putting our uniforms for graduation and you know I'm I'm still on a walker get my uniform on zip up that uniform shirt and actually started crying because it was it was very emotional moment for me to realize that I had earned that that certain badge the privilege due to wear that uniform one more time and my kids were.

They were amazing at my graduation. They were so they were so excited. I think they're more excited than I wonder when these future plans. I am actually 55 now. I graduated Academy, 53, so I'm 55 now 56 coming up here shortly. I am back at the mounted patrol unit so I get to probably I'll probably stay here and in my career will be a long one. I'm not quite sure how many years of we can do at this point, but as long as I can stay here, you're never too old to do what you really want to do and sometimes when it's really really hard.

That's when you that's when you get the best reward you know that this was definitely the hardest thing I've ever done.

But it's also been the most rewarding and safety key is leaking stories. Great job as always based on the story. I'm not sure how many years I have but I'm going to stay as long as I can choose to wait for kids and her kids while they were cheerleading on mom and it's a beautiful thing when people do these kind of things. We also got to hear what cops train for right in the circumstances they have to get into in their lives. It actually get trained punched in the face of American stories historian Wendy Caldwell story of love story of compassion and in the end what nerve and guts to go back into the Academy choice beautiful as this is our American story doing household chores can Artie be time-consuming and tedious. It can seem confusing, but it doesn't have to be UHC Medicare health and's.com to learn more United healthcare helping people live healthier lives, and we returned to our American stories and up next we have a listener story from Nancy Paul Nancy lives in Birmingham, Alabama in the heart of the Mississippi Delta today lives. He reflects on her childhood. The short story she wrote called being at Ole Miss for itself a lesson. Ole Miss is the college here in our small town of Oxford, Mississippi near ourselves of Memphis and for anyone over perennial were Chicago spam or Giants fan you know what I'm talking Nancy share her story. I got the town of an earnest Mississippi town has a population of approximately a thousand people.

The bypass pendant around the town some 30 years ago negated the need for the town's one red light is a farming community, surrounded by fields of various crops such as cotton, corn and soybeans as well as catfish ponds gave much thought about the childhoods of other people until I went away to a college located in the big metropolitan city.

It was then I realized that not everyone had a similar childhood is mine.

Of course that is not to say that a childhood spent in a small town versus a large city is superior and just never given.

The difference is my shop childhood spent in a small town was all I knew. Additionally, most people who I encountered during my childhood had also grown up in similar environments. Impression that all childhoods consisted of small towns, where one knew each other's names in their family histories going back for several generations. Everyone else's small grocery store lattice eight customers to charge their purchases to their families account with the simple signature I thought everyone else had a family reunion party on Christmas Eve but had an attendance of over 80 of their most beloved family members. I thought everyone else had worked in cottontails and driven a tractor until I moved to the big city that I realize how seemingly unique my childhood had been amongst my peers. This is also confirmed by the fact that often times when I would tell a story of my childhood about life in general.com blister size would grow large and at the end of the story they would respond with a simple well better yet, that is a new NME that in turn gave me reason to cherish my childhood all the more for my day job I am an estate planning attorney, which means I regularly advise clients going through personal crisis is often hear how they would wish their current situation on anyone because it is beyond awful particular situation. Clients often struggle with this family estrangement. I recently read a book, seeking to find out more about family estrangement as above provided research on the reasons why such an event may occur surprised to discover that the authors research suggests that perhaps 20% of all families in the United States, if not more happen estrangement within their family. A few years ago during the four hour trip to see my beloved grandfather as his health was failing. As we were talking grandfather brought up the subject of my career and all of the family struggles I had encountered and drew in a deep breath. Apostasy looked out into his yard for a while.

He then turned back to me as he said in a matter-of-fact time.

Well, there's nothing you can do to make me quit loving you shortly thereafter my grandfather died started to reflect on the values that my grandfather had passed on to me which I now wish to instill in my children. So, to my great surprise was that I could not quit writing. I have written 50 stories about my family growing up in rural Mississippi, which hopefully provide some core life lessons I can pass on to my children. Copyright 200 more stories written a good bit of the stories I begin to wonder if there was any sort of magic to living in a small town that can't be found in a big city like most parents want my children to be smart well and well-rounded. More than anything I want them to be good people wanting to be kind to each other and to others and counter many place they will have a completely different environment for their childhood than I had one way I can install a small town like lessons and then tell them stories of my childhood. Today I am going to share one of the stories with you. I am 1/3 generation Ole Miss student that attended graduate school domestic grandfather was an undergraduate student Ole Miss grind Ole Miss football games and other events.

For most of my life.

I grew up hearing about the Ole Miss football great Archie Manning and his wife the homecoming queen Olivia Manning. Ironically, Archie Griffin, the same rural Mississippi County as I did also heard about the glory days of coach Bob was the last coach to lead Ole Miss to win a football national championship which occurred in the year 1962.

He had also led the football team to win the Southeastern conference championship for six years. During this timeframe. Ole Miss is not like either of these high doses coach fault. He retired in the year 1970 childhood. I saw the hurt looks on the faces of my father and grandfather when Peyton Manning, the son of Archie and Olivia Manning decided to attend a school other than Ole Miss also saw their looks a pure joy in their younger son, Eli Manning decided to attend Ole Miss have seen Ole Miss football through some pretty dismal seasons recall one game in which the opposing team's quarterback took a knee during every down at the third quarter you heard this correctly.

This happen in the third quarter. For those of you who are not football fans. This is not good. In fact this correctly unheard-of as it is an outright recognition by one team that they are not evenly matched with their opponent. The quarterback was trying to prevent his team scoring any more points as the game was already a bloodbath at the quarterbacks team being upon Ole Miss by almost 50 points. My father never let us sleep football game before it was over. As he said that was not where he would use a say in response to request to leave the game early.

Something along the lines we need to support the team the matter what happens, we need to respect effort. However, father made an exception to this policy for that particular game and will early in November 2003 Ole Miss was having one of the square football seasons where they were winning a good bit due in large part to the play Eli Manning anyone associated with Ole Miss football could just sense that something different was going to happen.

That year we seem to be destined for something better than finishing at our usual bottom or middle if we were lucky the SEC football conference so that we can came for the annual Ole Miss versus LSU football rivalry matchup game right before Thanksgiving. The winter that gamely secure the title of the top team in the SEC West go on to play in the SEC championship game in Atlanta discount ticket prices for the game are at record levels for the game. I mentioned to my dad that he should consider selling our season-ticket to make a nice profit downright offended at the suggestion in his mind that might as well have been treason. My dad insisted that we would both attend the game as we earn the right to attend this game after sitting through so many losing games. He was also sure that we are going to see history in the making. So there we were sitting in our regular well loved seats in the upper level section C of the stadium towards end of regulation play with Ole Miss down.

1714, Eli Manning and Ole Miss were in position to make game-winning drive the energy in the stadium was palpable. At this point my dad did one of the most amazing things I've ever seen him do.

He pulled out of his pants pocket picture button pin without saying a word proceeded to attach it to his shirt selling then to further inspect the pan.

I fully expected there to be a picture of Eli Manning on it similar to the other buttons I had seen that day being worn by so many of the other Ole Miss bands.
