This is Lee Habib and this is now American stories we tell stories about everything here on the show in clerestory seven hour American stories.com. Some of our favorites. Next, well, a great history story in all of our history stories brought to us by the great folks at Hillsdale College 1927 the iron lung was invented this machine help keep people alive wish olio a disease which today is mostly eradicated in the late 1940s disabled average more than 35,000 people a year is on Monty Montgomery with the story of this lifesaving device.

In the first half of the 20th century there was nothing quite like polio here staring Glassberg of the mobile medical Museum. One that polio was really serious virus affected mainly young children, children between the ages of five and nine through the mid-1950s, the peak year was 1952 or 58,000 reporting time, Michigan 5500 words long.

The vaccine was developed in June so that texting only way to mitigate the effects of advanced polio device known as iron lung it's used for. When people develop paralytic polio, about 5000 cases and it paralyzes your diaphragm and your unable to breathe independently. What is this, it is a respirator that you are supposed to stay inside your strapped down your lying on your back, your immobile your head is resting on his pillow and when this is close they lock it up so nowhere circulating on the inside of this machine and this electric motor is going to turn this bellows back and forth has a handling case, the motor breaks down you can manually operated.

But what's not what that's going to do is create negative pressure on the inside of the machine and this is actually how your lungs and your respiratory system are supposed to work but since there's lower pressure on the inside of the machine outside that is going to actually force air through your trachea and into your lungs and then when you're inside your sea stay inside basically 24 seven fully recover and meanwhile nurses are providing care for you through these portholes watching you off massaging your lands changing your bedpan. There's a wider hole on the other side. They were very costly, like in the 1930s is one of these cost $1500 which was as much as a single family home and you know this is before health insurance and so not everybody could afford one.

Hospitals invested heavily in and they were, you know, very common during Sarah not meant as a permanent treatment but some people ended up using it for the rest of their lives because they never recover.

Mike Fredericks not the subject of much media attention at the time due to the ironmongers quote unquote new factor was born on September 22, weighing 8 pounds site has lived in on all you baby his childhood sweetheart last year and now he's a proud father of his on magazine covers a call in the man in the iron long and Fredericks night was one of those people who never recover. And he spent the rest of his life in the iron long until he died of heart and lung failure. It's very hard in your body to be as you can imagine, motionless, stuck inside all the time. By 1959, there were still 1200 people using the current law 2004 there were 39 x 2014 only 10 people were still using daily basis. Today is about three often we get people that come in here all the people who remember growing up and seeing somebody who had one of these in their you know somebody being treated in their home in an iron lung need of these are not made or manufactured anymore or serviced any more. And so if you do get an advanced case. Polio you are more likely to be given a portable respirator that allows freedom of movement better access to your caregiver. But these individuals fell that they were getting better results with the iron lung so they were fortunate to have people in their family who could jerryrigged it and keep it running for them and that's what they used on a daily basis close to becoming a museum piece iron lungs are a reminder of the dark time in the past also proof of how far we've come in less than a century hour American stories on Monty Montgomery and great job as always, to Monty, who himself is a Hillsdale grad. We returned to our American stories, not next story from one of our regular contributors which is a listener Colorado story today is entitled live fire exercise is rich story leaving the deadline has come and gone. The Iraqis are living on what President Bush calls borrower time is no longer whether the war will start about when one little thing called Gulf War and sent into Iraq war.

The world Martians had the superior tank tank, fantastic piece of hardware actual combat experience, but we train a little place called training center in California the middle of nowhere in the one out there is about 19. What happened was no police investigation. I was taught in the manuals is always need for MPI to go out with the vision will no one ever had a pioneer here is the first time you go out with the vision problem. No one knew exactly what my job was so my mission, the flow accident was horrific accident around going off shot from the world see what happens and this is a story about very very close I have this day behind Jill sale will sound asleep.

This is rich terrible accident what happened tank fired up my oh my God walked over to you with the range of 15.

That's all I know their 4 x 4 and we started out a few phone calls like this when you were going to drive you black long I want to fall asleep. Woke up.

Still, when it comes out and got them talking. This is what we call fist is a five support vehicle is called targets. In this case, 113 set up a little hill there small group and they were called targets.

All of a sudden you hear a scream cease-fire, cease-fire, my God, my God, were hip cease-fire and people scream and she feels she/he is shut down shut down this action. It occurred one that was responsible for filing filing will maybe about 500 yards away is the first determine what happened to a major charge of all this is tell us what happened was they were doing a lifeline. Now the way this is this is a lost handle this is rollup rollbacks reload fire back and forth with this is range safety stakes long post ground for reasons well. I know this is read transfer on the Gunter time to move back to this wider and wider sticks and they were very, very firm and is progressively wider and wider. What happened is maybe three seconds to acquire a target and fire will fire the fist fired use disabled weapon to target whatever the missiles made of the show price almost as like a cone melts the arm or whatever hit the side tanks had been hit by a Sable Rounds with a little APC APC is it's very likely will let you know what's going on APC surprise me if not damaged come in will weigh between the tracks, APC square on survivors on this thing will watch entire top of itself was melted off and there was a machine gun on the amount actually melted down in half.

Now I have to go back to basin and division of labor. Now what talk to the crew commander crew using this for nice enough to put the crew in the same room and these guys must charge six and a couple there: in their and then around. I mean it actually walked APC almost instantly screaming over the radio, cease-fire, cease-fire, my God, my God, cease-fire also realizes he's missing back before around home on on well they were told to stand out from the Sgt. masking his hand was the carrier when the round mascot fire. She's on fire attack struck down the hill is not rule. He went back and forth from God accident. You see happen this. This is our American stories about mixed a powerful generosity story still was a banker in Cincinnati, Ohio when one day he stumbled upon a transformational idea years when with the story of that idea. I talk to when I got involved in nonprofit volunteer work I was doing and tell me the reason why I was hard for me and people just didn't understand not only that is really called to do our part where we can back that they wouldn't realize how much they were missing out on the barriers to knowing you work for an organization you are well paid well and that means you can't make regular meetings and from women's philanthropy work. If women are traveling or they tell me I'm a stay at home mom justify paying him $10 an hour while I go volunteer with you and now again overcome this way that wears part for me when hearing women.

They didn't have enough didn't know enough money or with my experience that when efforts couldn't make a difference. I really like what what what we need time I heard a story about a church pastor. The church of Christ, his senior staff explained to all the dire situation and that he really needed everyone to raise money payroll and mortgage payment for the church whenever crisis and it was a matter of three weeks before bringing on women and she mobilized all the women on her team needed donation hardware all these things for trying to raise as much money to deliver the check.

Something like $8000 raise that much money so quickly before but exhilarated. She's walking out the door locks and check to the pastor many times more than what the women were able to do and see him.

How in the world.

How did you and the guy said well you know I decided we could give $5000 and said that I called my friend Joe. I asked him again in time and Stephen, I played golf with a couple of guys and they wrote a chat and much more powerful way to bring in all this money in no way was held back like pastor said by the way whatever you do don't write a check. Just work your tail off and try trolling women are brought to think first about doing even when we control our own well. We are much less likely than a man to write a check without getting permission from a man in her life.

Or at least getting confirmation and then don't view mining the same way for me. I started a moment. As I sat there that summer with my spiral notebook one by one. I started to create what we now know so mile is really simple. You gather at least 100 women who each donate $1000 now for me, this notion of putting in a spiral notebook every women way give $1000.

I myself never written a check for thousand dollars to a single charity prior to impact, 100 S. I didn't go with the knowledge and experience of writing. When I called.

I just knew that the numbers had to work to be powerful, all taken out for any expenses would be pooled and given away in grand hundred thousand dollars or more across five broad areas. This was not women helping women and girls this wise women finding community five focus areas, arts and culture environment preservation and recreation health and wellness family and education. The idea being that there would be a nonprofit in that community, whose mission qualified, we would have one women, one shack and one vote, if a woman was wealthy enough to write a check for five or $10,000 she was welcome to do so that she could not buy five or 10.

This was democratizing philanthropy. They can select to write a check and not do another thing except cast their ballot or they could serve in a variety of ministry committees leadership for and they can also serve on the grant review committee and then we come together for an annual meeting we allow those five finalists to each cast their votes in the highest grant and selling late October I invited women who had initially identified as being part of the founding board to dinner. They knew we were to talk about impact 100 and whether it will go no go. What I didn't count on is, I invited 15 women and when I didn't share that in the last where as committed as I was moving with impact 100 I wouldn't do it. I knew that this was way too big and undertaking it certainly can be done by me alone, and it could even be done by just a small group that we needed women to be able to own this in the way that I feel that the question became not who, if not here, where, and if not now then when fortunately for Maddie and for several other communities. All 15 women that they were in so right now we have 65 active chapters 2019, we had given away cumulatively.

Just under $80 million and $80 million. Thousand dollars at a time is mind-boggling numbers when you trying to solve the problem in hearing how men did better in this respect. They just did better as we do it better than that.

This idea was better than just calling a few pounds you golf with much the power of an idea and executing folks about a way to learn more about joining impact 100 chapter in your community or starting one. If there isn't one impact 100 counsel.org impact 100 counsel.org when we come back more with Wendy steel story on our American stores, this is Tori with OMG podcasts we have such a special episode brought to you by near attack ODT we recorded at iHeartRadio and Windows handout near attack ODT were magic pant 75 mg can help migraine sufferers still such an exciting event like window tango.

I know everything there is to know about running a coffee shop for small business insurance. I need my state for me to make sure my business people, and competent business owners to help you best. State Farm is in your corner and on like a good neighbor.

There call your local State Farm agent for quote today we continue with our American stories and the story impact 100 generosity movement were 100 women are more in the community. Each donate $1000 and make transformational gifts of 100,000 books returned to its founder Wendy steel on the very beginning of what was meant to be the first and only chapter in her community, Cincinnati, Ohio by March 2000 $523,000 and we offered up as single grand hundred and $23,000 and the highest vote-getter dental clinic in over the right which is what counts, called the McMaken health clinic had one woman named Dr. Judy Allen five dental chair setups that have been donated by very generous several years back when he was updating his own practice.

Shares were all troublesome. They didn't quite operate as well. Judy would like them to sell the application way to re-outfit them, but our members voted to do.

We were all invited to an open house where Dr. Judy with great pride like this around her newly refurbished dental easels.

She had pictures of her patient's name. I got pictures of people and every age and every background who before picture there, barely smiling missing teeth and black tea.

In some cases, swelling now severe illness going on. People don't always think about your dental health is so critical. If you've got black teeth are missing key you're really not even hire a ball and a lot of traditional entry-level kinds of jobs, the receptionist at your company or that hostess at a restaurant.

Even there they have black teeth are missing teeth very hard job of any kind in your self-confidence is just a night out smile on your bare before and after pictures of all these different patients and how their lives changed and then a story that would tell you before somebody was unemployed and homeless in their whole situation.

After our insulating CDs beaming smile so Dr. Judy and I become good friends. At this point, she called me into her office. She pointed while. Instead, Wendy.

I really want to look at and it looked like a calendar and I said that Judy looks like you're serving more patients that excellent but she said no and you are missing the point name is on my calendar right now volunteering to come into the clinic every week. She explained that for years when she would go to her dental Association meetings and the continuing education credits and so forth, she would explain needed volunteers needed more help to explain how they would smile and they would not tell her yes they never came.

Now they were coming different chairs and chairs that she had been using them for about 20 years old and useful life dental equipment is about 20 years, and sell what was happening is that Dennis worked in a calm because they were doing very complex treatment and they couldn't rely on the drill light landing equipment. But now this equipment me of local Dennis to join the community and come alongside. We had tried really hard to get the local press in Cincinnati to tell our story and we just couldn't break through so about a week after visiting the McMaken dental clinic. My home telephone rang and I almost hung up because I thought it was prank call when the women explained that she was born in Grimsby them Midwest bureau chief for people magazine and that she wanted to do a story about impact 100. I was not a people, my driver at the time but I didn't know that people might have been the most widely subscribed or granted magazine. Apparently in the world at that point the people magazine story came out. The phone rang off the hook. In those days. I had a landline and in those days. My email is AOL I got hundreds of people reaching out when were talking about how they wanted to replicate this model in their own community and how much would I charge for the license fee.

How much would I charge to help them get started beginning it was never designed to be profit-making exercise for me and so I could not imagine charging people to be able to use that and so I didn't.

I gave the model freely and interestingly, Pensacola, Florida is now the world largest impact 100 chapter and if you know anything about Pensacola. Demographically, that might be a price you especially if you know that we have chapters in Fairfield County, Connecticut, Chicago, Illinois, Palm Beach, Florida Salmon Cisco California and Pensacola. They started off strong goal of every impact organization in my opinion, the goal should be to get to 500 members when you get to 500 members to give away five grand to give one grand in each focus area.

Doing so satisfy all the women as well. We can all be satisfied.

I suppose that he satisfy all aspects of community really get blanketed in year-over-year when you're giving 100,000 more across each of these five factors.

Well, it really is a game changer for the community in year one, Pensacola.why would we only get one. Keep going and they were able to track more than 200 women first year they got to 500 members relatively quickly and when it came close to their 10th anniversary.

They decided that it made sense that all the way thousand members and they did. Some people thought that thousand member was just as special thing for their 10 year anniversary and they revert back to seven or 800 members, but they didn't state about thousand members since then in just a couple of weeks ago annual meeting or when it's known: million-dollar Sunday, they gave away 11 grand totaling $1,166,000 on Sunday across all five focus areas. The second year they given away much money they had 15 finalists.

Three and each focus area members would vote for two of the three in each focus area and then choose one focus area that they thought should get fully funded grant funded as well. It was absolutely amazing to see million-dollar Sunday and the outcome from Pensacola. I think that sometimes God gives favorite and most unlikely people and turns what would be simple. All one man who thought she was getting the banker into the founder of the movement that is getting ready to turn 20 and knocking on the door of the hundred million dollars in new money contributed to communities around the globe is to me. As shocking as it is inspiring and that is dumbfounding.

I would not be the one that most people would pick for the team and so I am very grateful that our God has a sense of humor and that he thought I would be the right person.

Cincinnati would be the right place and now would be the right time to start that to me as a surprise, but I'm grateful when you story 100 impact 100 remortgage of the mortgage family foundation for telling us about when member all 65 chapters including that woman Pensacola Wendy still story on our American story
