Let's ride Mrs. Lee Habib and this is our American stories show where America is the store show where the American people in the store. One of our favorite topics to talk about on the show's history. The Angels of the 10 were Navy and Army nurse Corps members were stationed in the Philippines early outbreak of World War II. These nurses faced some of the most grueling conditions of the war from even being captured and held as POWs by the Japanese, is a regular contributor and Claire with the story of one of nursing career for a nice girl in the 1930s. After all, this dirty physical work required learning far too much information about the absent tax. However, it was also one of the few opportunities for a young woman who couldn't afford college to continue her education in the Depression-era United States $0.16 in our hospital pain wasn't bad either. Georgia born Francis Nash was one of the many young women who ignore social stigma and join the Army nurse Corps. Nash was given the relative rank of Lieut. Meaning she didn't undergo military training and didn't rank us to lose our full pay. She didn't even have an official uniform just insignia to wear on the collar of her light bill you nurses stress.

However, she did have the opportunity to volunteer for service overseas in 1940, Nash volunteered for a two-year tour stirrings of war on the horizon concerned her family and friends was now really good time to go abroad. Nash responded to the effect that if the war were coming.

The Philippines would be where nurses were needed. She wasn't the only one who thought so United States preparations for war were slow and incomplete, but they had already begun, increasing the medical staff of the six Philippine military hospitals, five Army and my Navy doubling the complement of nursing staff on Monday, December 8, 1941, which would be December 7 back in United States on the other side of the international dateline Nash and her fellow nurses awoke to news of the attacks on Pearl Harbor. Three hours later the first Japanese planes struck the Philippine within two weeks. Japanese forces landed. Gen. MacArthur removed to Corregidor and evacuation of US and Filipino forces to the tan Peninsula on Christmas Eve.

Lieut. Nash evacuation preparations were interrupted or commanding officer Col. JW Duckworth called her friend. He told her that she would be expected to remain behind in Manila until all of the staff and supplies were evacuated from the hospital.

She was also told to prepare herself to be taken prisoner. She spent her Christmas day working in surgery and burning documents. That night she was evacuated by boat. The waters by placing buildings on the land and ship eventually after some time spent in foxholes and leaned through the jungle – arrived to serve in hospital number one on the tan Peninsula. The most forward of the hospitals. She and the other medical staff worked through the long disheartening struggle to hold the tan struggling to save lives, not all of her patients were American or Filipino. At times medics would bring the wounded Japanese into the surgery. Many of them were items they taken from American troops as spoils more. The Japanese had not signed the Geneva Convention, which declared medical facilities off-limits as military targets and snatches hospital suffered for it. After an attack on 6 April of 1600 bats, only 65 were left standing. Three days later the remaining defenders and surrendered a month later, Gen. Wainwright surrendered Corregidor along with thousands of US and Filipino troops who surrendered more than 60 nurses including hash, were taken as prisoners of war.

Three years of captivity Nash and the other nurses would continue to care for the wounded and for the sick nursing may not been considered a nice profession in polite society by as the monument on Corregidor, which commemorates the service of Nash and her fellow nurses show in the eyes of some. They were far more than nice. They were angelic. The inscription reads in honor of the valiant American military women who gave so much of themselves in the early days of World War II.

They provided care and comfort to the gallant defenders of the tan cargo door.

They lived on a starvation diet shared the bombing straight spanking sickness and disease while working endless hours of heartbreaking duty.

These nurses always had a smile a tender touch and a kind word for their patients. They truly earned the name the Angels tan and part dedicated on this sixth day of May 2000 and a great job on the production by Monty Montgomery and a special thanks to inquire sharing with us the story of Francis Nash volunteered for service overseas to your tour of duty in the Philippines.

Starting in 1940, probably no tougher place to be in the world the place ended up being about December 1941, just hours after Pearl Harbor was attacked and came the Japanese into Manila and into the Philippines from their became a POW and this is the work during the service. We continue here on our American stories and next we bring you the story of Martin Lucius's company compass tours and unconventional Texas-based tour company's wild individuals who ride around in search of whether most people try to what kind of person does it take to do this. Let's find out. Martin Lucius first became interested in the Texas where we fixed basis.

What was a kid about four or five years old.

We have sources come through the lighting with it so close to her house also write on the street from her house was station to be Earl Taft was the urologist and Harold is actually credited with creating the American weather cast before him. They would simply read the text. The for a piece of paper he being urologist decided to use maps describe going computer will think the stock up on what all color comes almost double the light will appear in the Gage Oklahoma so I watch him a lot and this old-fashioned radar quite a bit. Well, that was kind of weather was about 12 years old weather station researcher and started plotting storms in the science fair competition 3D model superficial our company that started in 2000 zero 1999 I decided I was going to do it because I didn't think to myself starts to your company. I just was pursuing a lot of requests from regular normal people to go storm chasing with me and they were usually not able to go because of work. So I thought what if we created tours that we schedule you in advance.

People get off work actually go.

That's one to the store's born background 2000. No storm chasing fishing is a good time of year to go fishing right but you go out and you go out several days fishing is not good is a lot like that tour typically run for 11 days. The links below to see just like you basically morning we told the just went to meet us to stay in motels. Of course, and will read in the lobby are her somewhere and will do a little wet weather briefing and tell them what we show the maps and so forth. We tell them why were going there what we can expect that day that we all loaded up. Wait for storms develop track. The one that we fill has the greatest potential tornado or super self drive through for storms form in your target very careful to pick this right so we can sometimes hold back a little bit and waited till the best one we think will be the best for very successful track moving too fast stop. What is like which you can see our website. People come to question the people ask is how close do we get that I say close enough to take great pictures but far enough to be safe so best way to see how close we get is to go to our website about her Facebook page to see the pictures that we've taken it over guest taken get good idea of how close we get along the way they are and there's a screen in the van and sat there watching what director is standing there saying models developed.

That's King George Tempest Taurus customer relations manager, so he will be explaining why this is where we need to be asked how he will constantly keep them updated as they are going to target and said they will wait for you to visually see that storm coming at FORTRAN. Everybody gets very excited. We get closer to the storm.

We track it sometimes shifted wait a little while time you're going straight towards storms develop in the afternoon and that once you are on the storm. Then, depending on how the storm is moving position, reposition, reposition, again, because our stock standstill must where it takes to start. We follow it, or until you lose the light and sometimes that'll happen chasing this dark, sometimes they do defense on the stomach is developing tornado plans we have discussed here Chase's time even after dark – he saw some nighttime tornadoes, which was very amazing and the only reason he can see the lightning strikes you can actually see storm that's basically a typical day get lodging nearby and they stay somewhere for the night and they also are developing a plan to begin all over again the next day.

We are not a luxury chair company.

We had to tell them that honestly chasing in any event, he does that with now. He'll be in case America somewhere, and there is sometimes real options and so you do the best you can with the environment and their bad planning statement.

Everyone Islam Motel 6 because the important thing is that the luxury chasing really tell that stoplight bad rest start day we will head towards the next target so that they may be followed by a severe weather condition so will head towards the target all the way stop it places that are interesting things that I've been there is a place in Kansas that called monument rock formation in the middle and you get on it and it's just crazy… Tower weather service office to work is interesting. Every so this is our guest vacation time. This special storms mean they don't really care about the storm to follow so you try to make plans that were not in a hard case for the storm. We try to make this time you are listening to Martin Lucius George Martin is the founder of Tempest words is story here on our American store millions will make Medicare coverage decisions for next year and United healthcare can help you feel confident about your choices for those eligible Medicare annual enrollment runs from October 15 through December 7. Then we returned to our American stories and for many of us our first job is one of the most memorable which makes sense. First, job scope should people and for many of us become our first taste of real adult responsibility next story about a first job as our regular contributor from Delaware Brent Timmons with his story will turn my high school and college years I worked at a restaurant Fenwick crab House Fenwick Island Delaware. The restaurant was owned by Kashi and Mabel Evans from 1962 to 1983 in February 2006, I sent this letter to Mrs. sevens. Mr. Evans had previously passed dear Mrs. Evans, this correspondence is long overdue. There were a few things I've been meaning to tell you this is no exaggeration. I have a dream about the crab house two or three times a year. That is always a similar dream.

I come into the kitchen. Years after having worked there and I'm expected to cook, but it is been so long that I can't remember what to do as a traumatic or anything I just realize that time is past and I need to relearn the job is yours in the kitchen must've made quite an impression for me to still be dreaming about the crab house became aware of job openings through Michael. It was the spring after we got her driver's license, 1977 Mike came to school one day and said he had gotten the job at the clubhouse asked what he would be doing washing dishes and peeling potatoes are the only two chores I can recall I could do that thought working with my best friend Mike would be ideal and nervous phone call to Mr. Evans ended with the patient become sub to interview for a job you told me where you live. A White House in view of ricks laundromat, the only house with a picket fence. I drove to Somerville to a house with a picket fence in view of ricks. No one came to the door neighbor alerted me that I was at the wrong house you lived in the other only house with a picket fence post interview that had landed my first job. Perhaps it was my relation to my grandfather lives a good friend of Mr. Evans made him feel obligated to give me a chance well and how hard could it be anyway despite my inability to find your house. I did find the crab house on that first day of drove down with Mike thinking the company would help with first-day jitters. I've known a few people who had worked there. My older brother buddy include the lasted about a week. My first day on the job. I came under the instruction of little Daisy will was only a couple of years older see much more mature and wise. He became one of my mentors at the crab house seemed flawless and is job was universally accepted as our peer leader well will was our peer leader we also had our teacher leader Dave Baker coached basketball and taught school how to define the been there 13 years and will about five by the time I came they were wholeheartedly devoted to the restaurant but most of all, devoted to the crab house family had great respect for both of them.

You know as well as crab house would've been a very different place without them I learned from them what to find the proper relationship between us employees and you, Mr. Evans the owners. The first summer I washed dishes and that occasionally potatoes.

Although you had that nifty potato peeler.

I learned that if you left the potatoes into law you ended up with potatoes. The size of golf cherry tomatoes also learned or actually relearn to make salad related salad on the table in the back porch next to the coleslaw mix. I was sitting there one day during cucumbers, no great skill cut both ends off and feed them through the slicer but I managed to fumble on step one. I was cutting the ends back to where the seed started. Mr. Evans came strolling and see what we were up to. While you cutting so much off the end of the cucumber. The question well, that's the way my mother doesn't respond. It was then I first learned about the quick wit and intolerance for impertinence of Mr. Evans.

How long is your mother been in the restaurant business. I don't think I intentionally determined cup cucumbers in a way that was different from how I was told to, but I did learn that day. The importance of paying close attention to instructions we've gotten many a laugh.

Recalling that story. My mother especially enjoyed about my second year when my its ugly head again.

I was a slow learner. Mr. Townsend very very old man commented several times a week. I didn't really grasp the significance of what Mr. Evans was going for him at the time because I was young, self-centered Mr. Evans Woodham prepare Mr. Townsend's dinner. It was usually no make that always borrowed chicken breast, no skin sautéed asparagus boil potatoes. Mr. Evans viewed the task of cooking for his old friend, is a privilege I viewed it as just a chore sometimes Mr. Evans would cut up the chicken himself but often come to me and asked that I go get a chicken as I was one of the resident to confront guys by this time in my crab house career fence to clamp job. I took over from Rex Paul thought that I was very busy when Mr. Evans requested that I cut up two chicken breasts for a little exasperated wondering why he couldn't do it himself. I said Mr. Evans. I'm really busy right now all got to work for me shouted missed the whole point Mr. Townsend studio to have an old friend I had my first serious relationship while working at the crab house. She was a wonderful girl. Mr. Evans loved her, but he felt it was important to constantly tell me hazards of first relationships. He warned me over and over about these hazards, I ignored him and finally figured out on my own, that maybe they should not occur. Your senior year of high school I had my second serious relationship right after ending the relationship with my first also waitress at the crab house. She was a wonderful girl as well. Mr. Evans loved her as well to did not warn me about second relationships. This mistake was that he should've won the girls about me, not the other way around, and you been listening to Brent Timmons share with great detail.

Great emotional memory to his first job at the crab house from everything from his duties well. His loves his first two laws springing from that employment is nothing like working to get to know people, especially in the business like that time you spent together and the stress you suffer through together and the slow times get through together when we come back more Brent Timmons on his first job.

The crab house and the things you learn from it and perhaps still gleaning wisdom from more with Brent Timmons. I had one night I took minor attack ODT and I was present amazing time.

A little glimpse of our conversation with some of our closest friends. This episode was brought to you by near attack ODT were magic pant 75 mg life with migraine attacks can mean missing out on big moments with friends and family, but thankfully no attack ODT were magic pant 75 mg is the only medication that is proven to treat a migraine attack and prevent episodic migraines and adults sell lively events like window tango down have to be next, and we continue with our American stories and Brent Timmons story first job friend crab in Delaware working for cash or in Maple my point out, this story is actually a reading of the letter he wrote to Mabel. When we last left off. Brent was telling us about some of the lessons you learned from the pitfalls of young love. How to cut encumber problem. Let's continue with the story I mentioned that I'd taken over the job of clamp for Rex. Rex had a way of joking and kidding that I really enjoy. One day while training me on the clamps.

He mentioned that if you are sure of the clan was good or not you can tap to together they make a solid clicking sound. They are both good. If one is dead. It won't hold its shell tightly together and it will make a dull thud.

It was legitimate instruction. Think you never knew about Rex over emphasized the necessity of this task, because I took him to mean that you should do this on every clamp putting steaming. So if you were to observe me doing clamps you would've heard an incessant topic. I can be a little compulsive and became a compulsion Clamps together. They wanted to clamp in the steamer Mr. Evans called me doing this early. All else while I was knocking the clamps together and I told him not importantly mine. You and I was checking to see if they were good. Rex told me to do it and learn from the cucumber episode to follow instructions to the T.

Mr. Evans roared in laughter from that day on he referred to me as not to knock it makes me laugh just thinking about it, following spring, working some before the season started and forgotten what nickname had given me. I reminded him and knock knock stuck the rest of my time crab.

Eventually I moved up to line cook. It wasn't until recently that I realized I wasn't really cut out to be a line cook. My favorite thing to do. Crab house was the cook of Siberia to Siberia was a long stroll to the other end of the kitchen and was given that name to its remote location Siberia two was a smaller line in that kitchen. I like Siberia to because I would have just a couple of waitresses will be able to work on one or two orders at a time when I realized just a few years ago is that I'm not a great multitask person. I don't do well trying to do a bunch of stuff all at once. Just my attraction to the small line and Siberia. My next favorite job was Siberia. One. It was not as busy as the main kitchen, much less chaotic. So even when it did get busy down there. There were fewer things to distract me from cook plus working in Siberia one only met you would be the first to get off work.

I don't know if everyone else knew this about my abilities are not good they were sensitive enough not to make a big deal out of it, but my guess is that you all understood our strengths and weaknesses put us where we would work the best was wise on your part as I look back much appreciated all mine. One of the things I really enjoyed was the preseason. I enjoy going with Will and Mr. Evans down to the crab house before we (I like being in the select group could be on the inside. Perhaps I was really seeking to be a right hand.

I wanted to be a go to guy for Mr. on a Saturday morning after the restaurant season headed Mr. Evans called me at home invited me to go to University of Delaware football game with you. It was the same day that my grandfather chose to dig out his potatoes yearly task for one Saturday in the fall with plant rows and rows enough to feed everyone in our family who wanted for the entire winter we would all go and dig them out after he turned over the dirt with the tractor. There was an all day affair digging loading them in the baskets and transporting them to the pump house for storage.

I enjoyed it to a degree, but also viewed as a sort of an obligation partly so we can share in the free potatoes all winter and partly because pop-up couldn't do it alone. Today Mr. Evans called can't really say I was totally thrilled about going to the game. I never been to a college game and there were the potatoes. Looking back, I'm sure my family would've given me the go-ahead to go to the game but I dug potatoes instead. I should've gone to the game with you and Mr. Evans should've taken advantage of your generosity. It was a great privilege to have been invited to spend the day with you in my shortsightedness I missed. There is a brick wall front of Prince George's Chapel dog sections are placed over the years cars driving through it. Some of those bricks were due, the country was driving her car through it. Late one night after work she fell asleep on her way home. I don't exactly know what I recall hearing that you either loaned her the money to buy car gave her some money towards a new car.

Either way, it was a very generous and caring thing for you to do and I took note of it. It was completely in character for both of you.

One summer Dorothy had a hernia made a place for her out front. Seating customers cover.

Perhaps it was a wise move on your part.

She was so cheerful chatty cute but I was very aware that you were taking care of her until she was well enough to go back to waiting tables while I was dating Sherry invited us to a New Year's Eve party. Hope the old landing country club. I think perhaps it was the Rehobeth beach.and country club was a very classy affair as one would expect the old folks that the jitterbug we felt privileged to spend the evening. I knew that we were much more than a couple of kids just work and that is my whole point. Mr. Evans made us all part of your lives. We were not just employees who loved us.

We loved you back because you earned it by investing yourselves in our lives. I learned in those five years that life isn't just about work is more about people. When you do it right. Some of us end up dreaming about it for the next 24 years. I've often wondered if I could have better spent my summer someplace other than the crab house at least one spring. I was considering looking elsewhere for a summer job. I waited until late spring to call Mr. Evans and let them know I would like to return to the crab house that year. Mr. Evans seem to know what I've been contemplating didn't say much about it but he said just enough to let me know. It bothered him that I felt the need to consider going someplace else. I can only recall thinking about not returning that one year.

If I had, in fact done something else with my summers, I would not of learned about the pitfalls of young relationships, first-hand experience, I shall be sure to try to relate to my own children I would've missed the opportunity to work with a wide variety of young kids all kinds of backgrounds crab house was a training ground for relationships I would've missed all of that and I would not have had the opportunity to work with the couple 50 years my senior, and to develop a friendship with a couple that went far beyond an employee employer relationship. I don't think the fruit of that experience is over. I fully expect someday to have an opportunity to befriend young men and women 50 years my junior and be able to influence their lives as you and Mr. Evans deadline and at that time, I expect to hear an almost audible bell go off in my head and I'll say to myself, this is why I spent five of the most impressionable years of my life at the crab house with Mr. terrific job on the production my monthly special thanks to Brent Timmons for sharing his story of his first summer job. By the way he did that by reading a letter written to Mabel Evans husband cash with the owners of the Fenwick crab house where young Brent so much learning working for couple 50 years old. Well, that memory still burns in him because he's now hoping to transfer is no generation or two generations behind him. That's how so much of her learning happens, it gets passed along from generation to generation. We love sharing these intergenerational stories is old and young have a lot to give each other the story Brent Timmons. The story of her first job of first loves, and so much more here on our American story
