In our next-door gums was from a man who simply known as the history guy's videos are watched by hundreds of thousands of people of all ages over on you to history guys also heard here in our American stories in this next story the history guy remembers the 16th president's son, Robert Todd Lincoln because of his father Abraham Lincoln, Robert Todd's life has been largely forgotten. Here's the history on April 9, 1865 Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Union Gen. Ulysses S Grant. Following the defeat of the Confederate Army at the battle of Appomattox Courthouse. The surrender documents were actually signed in the parlor of a home owned by a man named William McLean and they were witnessed by both Grant and Lee's staff. The last survivor among those witnesses lived all the way until 1926 and by coincidence, was a very famous person. One of the most important statesmen of his day.

Robert Todd Lincoln was Abraham Lincoln's firstborn son, and the only one of Abraham Lincoln's children survive to adulthood. His younger brother Edward died of a fever, just the age of three. Robert grew up at a time when his father was practicing law on a circuit and thus was probably gone most of the time and so the relationship was distance.

Not very close.

Robert once noted that his most vivid memories of his father going up was Abraham packing his saddlebags.

By the time that Robert's father was elected president, Robert was attending Harvard University. He described his father's being so busy that they scarcely had 10 minutes quiet time together during his entire presidency.

Robert graduated Harvard in 1864, and briefly attended law school there.

He felt compelled to join the Union army and share the risk that everybody else was taking at first. His mother resisted his little brother Willie had died in the White House of a fever.

In 1862 and his mother Mary Todd Lincoln feared that she could not withstand another loss but Robert eventually prevailed and his father asked Gen. Grant if Robert could be assigned to his staff. Robert was made an assistant adjutant, and given the rank of captain and that is why he was present to witness Lee's surrender. Robert had traveled to Washington to visit his parents on April 15 and his parents invited him to go to the theater with, but he declined.

He had been traveling on horseback all day and needed a rest and so Robert narrowly missed his father's assassination. Robert moved with his mother and his younger brother Ted to Chicago and he continued his law studies. He was admitted to the bar in 1867 in 1868 he married the daughter of a United States Sen. They had three children. In 1876. Robert was elected town supervisor of the town of South Chicago, a town that was eventually absorbed into the city of Chicago. That was his only elected office of his career in 1877 he was offered the position of assistant Secretary of State by Pres. Rutherford B Hayes, but he declined. Although he remained active in Republican politics, and then in 1881 he accepted a cabinet appointment as Secretary of War in the new cabinet of Pres. James Garfield. He was with Garfield in the train station in July 1881 and witnessed Garfield's assassination, Robert continued to serve as Secretary of War in the cabinet of Pres. Chester a Arthur where he was involved in many military reforms he left the position in 1885 and then in 1889 he was appointed to the important position of minister to the United Kingdom under Pres. Benjamin Harrison. He served for four years when he returns United States.

He became General Counsel of the Pullman Palace car company at the world famous maker of railway cars and when the founder George Pollan died in 1897 Robert was made president of the Pullman car company he served in that position until 1911 when he left due to ill health, but he stayed on as chairman of the board clear until 1922, despite his very accomplished life Robert Todd Lincoln is often remembered for three things.

The first was a coincidence. Somewhere in 1863 or 1864 Robert Todd Lincoln was riding a train from New York City to Washington DC and while in Jersey City, New Jersey.

He was bumped off the train platform, landing in the dangerous spot between the platform and the train a stranger reached down and pulled him out. And when Robert looked up he realized that his Savior was the most famous actor of the day a man named Edwin Booth.

Only later did Edwin Booth find out that the young man that he had saved was Pres. Lincoln's son, and that is said to have offered Edwin Booth some solace as he was personally devastated when his younger brother John Wilkes Booth murdered resident Lincoln second in 1875, Robert had his mother Mary Todd Lincoln committed to an asylum. He was concerned about erratic behavior after the death of his younger brother Taft the age of 18. Mary was able to get some letters out to her attorney. He was able to convince Robert to let her leave the asylum and live with her sister, but it included some public embarrassment for Robert and he and his mother never fully reconciled and finally Robert Todd Lincoln is sometimes described as being somewhat unlucky because of his proximity to three presidential assassinations. He just missed his father's assassination. He was there when James a Garfield was assassinated and he was just getting off the train going to visit Pres. William McKinley when McKinley was shot in 1901, he was there for three presidential assassinations because he was proximate to power during a tumultuous time but Robert Todd Lincoln lived an extraordinary life. He was born poor and it found great success and died very wealthy.

He was an elder statesman. He was a leader in his party, who was suggested as a candidate for president or vice president many times but always declined.

He was the president of one of the largest corporations in the country. He was frankly one of the most accomplished men of his era. His last public appearance was May 30, 1922 when he appeared with Pres. Warren G.

Harding and former president and chief justice of the Supreme Court, William Howard Taft at the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial.

He passed away in 1926, just a few days shy of his 83rd birthday and started he deserves to be remembered as more than just his father son and those words are true and spoken beautifully by the history guide. This couple went through great hardship and even a divorce.

Today they use their experiences to help others you in their marriages here alone and even sharing their own stories of brokenness and how they were stored in a marriage that most would have deemed hopeless. I like Mississippi which is a small town which is all of Mississippi and I lived out in the country formed around 4000 acres in two older brothers that were formed years older boy growing up in that environment, hunting, fishing, Callison dogs and horses, tractors got a better place to grow.

My mom and dad divorced when I was eight years old. That was the first great tragedy in my life and everything changed. Those turned over to my brothers for five years older so that I was raised by wolves two older brothers and their bodies were all forms made it so we figured life out very little parental supervision, direction and we grew up not a good way that we knew each other knows each other in small towns, we actually started dating when we were 15 and began our journey together a small town is in the city on the first floor, three children and so quickly had their child is probably in survival time to make me involved in my life. Is there a lot of accountability and a lot of rules to every crack in the sidewalk by all that I have a lot of rules and checks accepted Jesus when I was eight years old that was experiencing a lot of progress for me and my dad being the first article in this role in the family system so teams are responsible because she so with a lot of rules she could come to my house and for her so like really really out there and something that was the attraction for her not shot by all yeah there were lots of red flags broken dysfunction say I grew up in the Eastern Christian nation. We went to church at Easter. Maybe over grown up in small towns not going to church that was different and no and so even that was something just felt different. What I was just that kind of community and personality to adapt and fit in whatever environment I was in church with her 15 your voice to Jesus.

The church there's a girl there and so start going and then we started dating we graduated and went to college. That summer, before going to her freshman year.

The second great tragedy tragedy in our life happened yet realized the first did not understand me and between fast and we really thought this is the just the beginning life together now. However, I got all these just get married you build a house will start doing life together. When my mom divorced she remarried. Divorce later on. Brothers and I came up with our affection for him stepfather because he didn't have a father. His body so this movie came out. We started calling him stepfather and so that perfection and my little sister and so that became my mother's little nuclear family and I was kind of like where's Waldo and he had in summer they would go to the Bahamas and live on the boat which I got to experience that teenage years, which is one of growing up with him, but he did not like bad so the Bahamas cannot talk to my mother and I told her was pregnant and she basically told me that she needs a portion don't need to get married in 17 that's the level of support. I certainly did not want to do and so I called and told her she told her mother what my mother said, and then the decision was made and there never talked about conflict between fast I think that would just come out with a lot of intensity over the next 17 years in our relationship.

20 years old.

We were staying in college and always say it's real €20 frat boy comes to Jesus Chris Drake and Cusson smoking was to stop those things and then start church and we actually was with me when I accepted Christ in became very real threat to young people, going to church will certainly we knew something more than what we had. But there's very little in terms of actually relationship you actually navigate motions and all those things really strike totally and we were dealing with attachment issues and again, this time so getting married going into our senior year in college because you solve this. Just thought that's what we need and you're listening to Roan and Hunter share their story of brokenness and thinking marriage would somehow fix their problems and by the way, that happens every day and it doesn't fix the problem. Mike and his trauma on both sides brokenness on both sides, an alcoholic parent and trauma that grown face with early divorce and being raised by his he put a pack of wolves shouldn't raise boys it doesn't end well.

When we come back more of the story of Ronan and Eva Hunter dear on our American stories. I know everything there is to know about running a coffee shop business insurance. I need my State Farm agent and make sure my business days equal and confident business owners to help you fast State Farm is in your corner and on like a neighbor. There call your local State Farm agent for quote today doing household chores can Artie be time-consuming and tedious. There's nothing more daunting than facing piles and piles of laundry that need to be done can be overwhelming for anyone. If you want to get those larger laundry loads down bright and get back to your life. Try all three clear maggot packs all three clear mega packs are bigger packs two times the cleaning ingredients compared to a regular pack so that you can tackle any laundry load without the worry all three clear maggot packs are also 100% free of perfumes and dyes and their dental and skin which is great for any family sensitive skin needs my family. We definitely have sensitive skin. The next time the whole family gets home from long vacation or you get the kids back from summer camp or whatever the situation as that's cause this big pile of dirty clothes. All three clear maggot packs purchase all three clear maggot packs today and conquer any laundry load for all fabric types and were back with our American stories and the throne and Eva Hunter. We last left off. They were still a bit lost in the relationship they decided to get married and they thought they thought that would fix the let's return to Roan and Saul is disengaged and with children is certainly what I saw was just a lot of detachment so married in the way Mobile, Alabama. For years, and then transferred to Nashville year round up in Atlanta and so both of our sons and two small children to sign and we were having a discussion.

We were arguing. Eva asked me you seem down down and I looked at her words came out said I have a problem with and I literally remember turning around as there was no way I was ever going to tell her that for me started in this way before the Internet, but my mother's energy boys will be boys and we had pornography on the table and the hours just absorbing that stuff to my brain and when I came to Christ. It was one of those things that I sincerely not do that anymore and everybody thinks you get married and that's form to fix it so with marriage can stress of intensity and anxiety.

And so my full-blown sexual diction began to escalate bigger cities. I was going to strip joints and soft followers and prostitute's geographic cure because I can just get away from these places fix it will.

Each city was bigger and more opportunities geographic/half of those moves in Atlanta and she asked me question so down in the words came out and that was really gone head out into the line so that was the beginning of everything changing us two years hello it was devastating to me because what is to be to the world to me. We will later see a chair in a timely 19 9711 convenience stores taking out all shouts all across the state keeps saying he talked about at the same time. Never say this is Mrs. so soft to me. So, great sign call first shot in anger.

Anger with her fear and frustration. Just talk into this deeper feelings.

I never in my whole life feel those vulnerable feelings ever angry.

Stay for longer than sustain hopeless thought separation would be good for me to lawyer the state of Georgia is saying here is there is not a legal separation wanted to be protected financially because so she said no way to protect yourself financially is to divorce and divorced in 30 days be protected financially. If you are able to reconcile economic solution to me. What was completely done and really realizing children getting a full-time job to work on sale. The first thing I did was I don't.I for me.

It was one of the lady is all that these were all laundry last child. There's nothing wrong with me when we go to counseling prior to the divorce process pretty quickly.

After a minute or two I very quickly.

J Christian counselor in Atlanta to be better to do with it. I just didn't know how. So I got a case with the Christian counselor got involved support group ministry therapy group with counselor because I work better counseling. The counselor when you problem is easy.

Shanda asked about growing up. Father her standard reply was we're here because of him. You need to fix it. Okay come back to me shine the light of what about the abortion that we're here because of the couples counseling was ready to get so a lot of individual counseling for the first broken product of next year came to reconciliation with because I could see look different, but there is a lot of similarities in it. Even when we were apart. Saul that he stated he thought he stated his own therapy that that he was all was engaged in the process were meaningless from long time with testing law where not so thinking about restoration process. We were divorce divorce for little over a year and then we did decide to remarry. We committed to doing our work in that process be involved in recovery groups. You process it was like we got remarried a lot of both involved support groups always have been and we always will be. And so we continue to work as marriage is easy and you have to be intentional and you been listening to Roan and Eva Hunter share will quite nakedly, quite boldly the problems they each brought into the marriage. It was easy for Eva to blame her husband Roan in the end she realized she came with a lot of brokenness into this marriage to a male currently divorced. Reconcile and find love and hope again in each other when we come back for this remarkable love story. Roan and Eva Hunter story here on our American store. I know everything there is to know about running a coffee shop for small business insurance. I need my State Farm agent and make sure my business days typing and confident business owners to help you past State Farm is in your corner and on like a good neighbor. There call your local State Farm agent for quote today doing household chores can Artie be time-consuming and tedious. There's nothing more daunting and facing piles and piles of laundry that need to be done can be overwhelming for anyone. If you want to get those larger laundry loads down bright and get back to your life. Try all three clear maggot packs all three clear maggot packs are bigger packs two times the cleaning ingredients compared to a regular pack so that you can tackle any laundry load without the worry all three clear maggot packs are also 100% free of perfumes and dyes and their dental and skin which is great for any family sensitive skin needs my family. We definitely have sensitive skin.

The next time the whole family gets home from long vacation or you get the kids back from summer camp or whatever the situation as that's cause this big pile of dirty clothes. All three clear maggot packs purchase all three clear maggot packs today and conquer any laundry load for all fabric types, stories and even hunters speak up with a list of all my sexual diction acting out so often is justified that love the way in this just totally bogus marriage trying with all this back to my luggage compartment down there practically.

We both got on the marriage trying stuff so she calls and she cannot change what was very went back to early childhood so coping behavior is learned early on and so that became our way of escape medicating stress that I was in such action. So we don't really like the term we really prefer Mr. sexual because this thing takes a lot of different forms and save diction. There's almost like it's hopeless from an addiction standpoint it's very different drugs and alcohol. Those two things actually alter the composition of your brain and your body and with this you To begin to understand the deeper roots and so cannot change that. So me and she could not control all important covering my brother. 40 had this calling that we would get back on a professional level. It was going to be retired so I think it would be this would be like to play now was God's very successful job companies and all that came in doing what we were doing in our church setting. Often somebody might go talk to the pastor pastors like you need to go see Pierce's phone number you were around a lot of the shame that I hand it doesn't always work that way for many people, not having shame about that God spoke to my heart that he uses for his glory and the overtime began to look like to really do this is giving up that safety and security of corporate job launching out of doing something on your own completely different process, just as long as you got to college and build houses and mortgages all you and so we got our graduate work in Atlanta. That process will such a journey to go back to school and even though it was retired and often college. We decided that we started our masters program at Richland College and were able to chance for this is college here agent for the corporate world business career 25+ years in corporate salt lines and one of my goals was to get out of that 50 and we started a private practice, 49 private practice for 10 years. We work a lot with couples in crisis when there's trouble, the relationship is in crisis and in crisis. You need a lot of direction.

It's right there process you feel about that when you're in crisis mode, player's engine is just asking everybody feel helpful. So going down you will somebody give you direction and if you trust this process, there is hope same meaning. Marriage is not only survived the process but actually begin to thrive and have a marriage that God intended from the beginning and with all 25 years to see what they get for you and community just really helping very well. People so very, very grateful for what happened to us. It changed everything lately live lives quickly. This is amazing to see in the last two years with all of this just kept opening so much of the things that are happening really feels real. We really both love what we do doesn't always is Crazy. So God is certainly life to us in so many ways.

Our mission is adding life to others very passive and when can now which he revealed himself, which is very unusual.

He changed into this man.

He didn't fear he really was. All courageous and for me personally to deal because I really thought the perfect couple. We had precious little house and it was so cute.

I really that so say was broken. I saw from city to come against any about this some years in churches and pastors in different settings so everything is destroying so many lives.

You can hide can keep secret. And so I am very outspoken can't be a pastor or church leader alcoholic figured out pretty quick preaching sermons and draw pastor scratching and itching is found out pretty quick this thing can go underground we don't count that I have to remain legally a lot to us. We call our marriage so that you feels like freedom. We know chance and you know we still can get. However, we do recover very fast today. This is really saying is God sense of humor And a dog in the throes of dryer and he says I will watch this and then turns the dryer and he says okay to get all try and so it's a lot of intentionality marriage to be what God certainly journey both say.

Often we would not try anything you journey is easy and painless. It is all in a terrific job in the storytelling production by Manson. Special thanks Sharon and Eva Hunter for sharing their story. What a blessing when Rome confessed that he had a problem with pornography. Things had to turn south. It was a divorce but in the end. A year later, while the husband was healing.

Now the wife and a look at her own brokenness and abortion, alcoholic father and her own healing journey begins to reconcile. They get married what they do with the rest of their lives. They help other married couples deal their lives in their marriages. By all means pick up their book sex God in the chaos of betrayal. The story of Ronan Eva Hunter story of marriage, love and redemption here on our American story
