071 - Moses, All Grown Up

Logan anywhere around the dining today and across me as beautiful birthday right answer job good job yeah we we so enjoy just looking at these passages Scripture and we hope that that's why you're with us to is justice exploring through Scripture is not only fun but it's extraordinarily insightful into the nature and heart of who God is good for us. As you bat these things around together and we gain from each other's insights yeah so you know if you not some kind of circumstance you can share study with someone else. I really encourage you to do that it's it's it's a great way to kind of work off each other's independent observations as you going and that's all were doing here we have not compared notes. I have no clue what and I know what I want to talk about but there often short of the one and the same but with slight variations. It makes just as we get done with the recording we go. That's where we went, so I contacted someone do that. It's just a growing up a young Christian that's right found almost all my best encouragement was discussing other people. Well, it doesn't have to be limited to a timeless designated Bible study yet because God said you know after he said now hero, Israel, the Lord your God is one and gave them this great Shema.

This listen up now talk about it when you walk around part of a natural conversation between believers yeah and and today were your jumping into Exodus not jumping well. Marty started it but it's you know we said this last time to be with us for the first time. Exodus is just a it's just a narrative story about a real thing that happened and it centers on God getting the Israelites out of the captivity in Egypt and in the promised land assault about okay and a lot of people these days doubt that the Exodus ever happened or that happened the way the battle records 4000 5000 years of Jewish history. The story has been handed down father to son, father to son, right.

It happened right and in interestingly enough, probably the top of the Jewish calendar in terms of holidays is Passover Passover Passover figured Chapman many chapters later in here. But to this very day. Jews gather around their table with her entire family and they tell this story. There is no explanation for that something was made up a few centuries ago you would've now and it's like in traceable amazing that for people who are geographically dispersed, all maintain this memory it would maintain this idea. This whole story. So for them this story is emblematic of so much about the care in the sovereignty of God well and this is the central story of the nation of Israel arises how they became a nation right. In fact, later on in the narratives in the Old Testament God will remind Israel when the right of trust God says hello. I'm the one that got you almost say it shows up in every book in the Old Testament. I'm the God who brought you out of Egypt so this is not this is big deal.

This just is a nice story. This is the backbone of the Bible in many respects, so we we last time we went through chapter 1, and a little ways into chapter 2 and we got to the birth of Moses, which is miraculous back and take a look at it and and now we skip between verse 10 and verse 11 of chapter 2 we span 40 years. Essentially, Moses is homegrown growing up lifetime right first third of his life right when we left him back in verse 10, he was a child, no question. Now we start out verse 11. One day, when Moses had grown up and then you know when you read Stephen's account when Stephen before you stone – 79.

He says that Moses 40 at this point so we just we just lost decades in Moses narrative coming into verse 11. And that's real, but we know that his toddlerhood is very very early childhood was in his own mother's home right being loved educated and nurture is a very high another very young child, and he was delivered into the palace of Pharaoh, where he was raised to adulthood celebrate a sort of internal conflicts to start with. Who am I so here's this kid that comes out of Jewish community is raised by his mom is a very young child, and then he's taken by the daughter of Pharaoh and is raised as an Egyptian in the court of Pharaoh king Addison education and training. I mean he he is by training and Egyptian but still he and so that's will pick up the story. Today he's all grown up so here we go. Verse 11,000 start up okay so one day, when Moses had grown up areas. He went out to his people and looked on their burdens and he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew one people, and he looked this way and seeing no one, he struck down the Egyptian and hid in the sand when he went out the next day behold to Hebrews were struggling together and he said to the man in the wrong line you strike your companion and he answered you prince and a judge over us. Do you mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian and Moses was afraid and he thought surely things now well when Pharaoh heard that he sought to kill Moses that Moses fled from Pharaoh and stayed in the land of Midian, and he sat down by a well all we can hear from you. I had such great hope for you in Egypt anymore.

My verse 16 only took five verses for him to be not in Egypt or yesterday went out to his people see how you phrase people. He sees himself in an official role in a sense as a deliverer as someone who's important as a leader you know. Maybe that's part of the reason that he was raised in the palace. He gets the peacekeeper. Yeah right. He'll look we have a representative of you who we are holding down as our slaves fell.

We have one of you in the palace so that they could have been, but he had easily.

At least he was self-aware that he had some right leadership position in the Hebrew so one day he went out and he looked on their burdens and he just tore Torres.

It was going on and they were still enslaved.

That's the burdens party looked on their burdens, and in the process that he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, so he decides well am a leader will intercede and innate sense of justice.

This is unjust as possible if he had not witnessed it.

In this way before you. So what you make of that thing in verse 12, or says he looked this way.

Well he knows what he's about to do is wrong he's he's crossing the line here that's what he knows he doesn't want to be seen doing this you look this way and that we do this in movies all the time when the character on screen looks this way and that you know all something bad.

Well nevermind the movies we do this personally to do something you think might be questionable to look around.

Make sure nobody's wanting to know into a murder right.

Maybe I something might be misinterpreted about who can see.

But in this case it is murder because of the all it says in verse 12 struck down Egyptian. That means you kill them, and it's clear that he was observed. He was the next day when he goes and tries to apply justice in a different way to his own people there like well you think you are who you sometimes I wonder if he just did a bad job hiding the body because this is my nephew knowing that this blows around you may be buried in the sand all got below is exposed by when I don't know we don't know what went wrong but it was just got this guy knew his attempts to come to make the secret just are not hold water for 90 members. So Moses conscience is guilty. He said he suddenly he feels like he's been exposed right, but he knows somebody does know is right early in 13 is as he goes up the next day right so we thought he got away with it and covered his tracks.

The rings: call tomorrow and I'll be leader again like it was yesterday using that in the first instance he thinks he he's bringing justice on behalf of his people as people understand it, they don't recognize a down stairs. Yeah, yeah, that's an important thing here. In fact, he could very well be if we use a little godly speculation. They might resent the fact that he actually lived in the palaces over slave. And so, so they probably would've written him off as being a Hebrew, technically speaking, yet he's a sellout he's new know he works the policies he's not one of us anymore is not our leader. He might be from the palace but is not our leader anymore. So, clearly look at them as being so out of place a specialist deliverer, especially as someone who can bring justice and inbreeding justice in his first attempt to kill the guy illegally right right so this is working out well as I was reading this kind of freshening in my mind in preparation to talk about today just as I read Jesse's first couple paragraphs and Moses goes out to his people and they reject his authority rejected and you know that sounds to me like just a little prefiguring echo of John 111 when John Jesse came to his own, but his own did not receive him, so you know we are going to be pointing out as the Lord brings them to mind these teeny little prefiguring types that reminds that bind us of Jesus. Now this is not an exact parallel but there is an echo of that idea that's exactly where we did some parables of Jesus last time. Keep proper know my way to the second yeah yeah so he came to his own, but they didn't receive the dinners and courses. First, it was first four into being, just not well done them like a partners problem blowing out later on that they will at first receive him as a leader and then through 40 years in the wilderness continue to reject it as time becomes a life story and say hello always only this is part of his condition from God's part.

We all know you are a leader and I've chosen you, but don't use the following. This is kind of the capstone on the first third of Moses life. We know that was asleep 220. So this is the first 40 years is for you that he hits this turning point here. Oh, you messed that up in a different direction and suddenly he's out of each of these out of Egypt. He's out of Egypt, and this is the way in his Hebrew guy says so what you do you arguing and you're going to intercede with you just as you kill one of us with that kind of justice and they shouldn't expect to come justice. That's not right that's not right. So then, so he gets to the Cuban 14 to so who made you the prints made you judge well. God actually did later on, as all the prep school for that exactly right. No, but it really freaked Moses out. He was afraid this point and I get it because you know if if this gets back to Pharaoh. Man, he's told is when Pharaoh heard of it, he sought to kill and that the welfare like this was a bad idea from the get-go were done here so so much. It was it was a good thing to run off committee and it's a big deal.

Okay so let's talk about median for minute before we get there because the city and Knights were people who were related to the Hebrews they work through Moses his wife could Torah right now.

Abraham Indians you know they were blood relatives back at Abraham's day and had had not continued as identifying themselves necessarily as the people of Abraham, but they seem to have retained an understanding of Abraham's God yeah yeah this the speculations that are connected since the connected by blood and spiritually to Abraham and this is that's a good case.

You make a good case for that. So in a second run talk about him meeting the sky priest of Midian.

When talking about a pagan priest were talking about actually someone who follows Jehovah as we find later in the story that that Moses father-in-law actually counsels him as to how to leave these people that God has entrusted to yeah that's a few chapters on where is Midian oh Midian, Midian, is actually her only option if your Moses if you go to runaway you you run, you run to the east by large but you don't want to run to the Northeast.

That's for the Hittites art rightness of the bed coming from Syria down to Palestine so we step to go.

That's really, he wasn't going to mow to Midian.

He was going away is running yeah and I love how mentally set down.

Well way if you know any of your Bible history.

A lot of action happens at Wells. Especially if you go back and look in Genesis you know a lot a lot of wives are found at Wells would draw the audio so now he finds Bill sitting in a well and now RC moved to Midian where Moses is clearly dressed like an Egyptian right is recognizable as an Egyptian is a stranger and now he's sitting at this wall. I'll pick up a stomach 16 so so now the priest of Midian had seven daughters.

Hey look, there's Drs. well is appraised as daughters for doing so is a priest and Midian at seven dollars and they came and drew water and filled the troughs to water their fathers flock now. The shepherds came and drove them away, but Moses stood up and save them in water their flock sky hey daddy. We met this guy at the well and he drew water and is also as nasty shepherds were pushing us away name to drown out draws water but but it's interesting to note. It took seven daughters to water the flock and now here Moses doing single-handed so he's know for a guy who's been raised as a prince in the most powerful country in the world. He's doing some pretty menial labor here all of a sudden.

But he's what he's watering their flock. Any student on behalf of these girls who were being bullied by local shepherds right right so it's interesting because here's got his God has made Moses his deliverer, and he's delivering someone out here and is a great thing is a great plan of courses is this you know when the word gets back to their father displays really well. So if you pick it up and 18. So when they came home to their father rule and I say that he says will. How is it that you've come home so so so today Moses wasn't with them. They just came back and they said what an Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds and he even drew water water you could say water your flock. Dad is flock so he said was daughters will. Where is that where his wife you left the man so this is this is the wonderful Middle Eastern hospitality saying something great for us. Why didn't you bring me some really good catch, so, so, go back and find the guy well they do why we left McCallum that he may eat bread with the hospitality thing we want to see the sky had been so kind to my family say thank you and Moses was content to dwell with the man and he gave Moses his daughters a poor wall there was an afternoon my daughter you think about it wasn't that. Suffice to say the meeting with dad went very well and and and you this this man in his daughters as the only people that Moses knows out here so he makes a really good connection with them good. He started by serving them rights and delivering us right shepherds started from that and so yeah so when you get when you get to the verse we just read. It turns out, how long time is transpired, but it's not you quite some time. This is the most was content to dwell out all man so he actually said on this statement stay in the man probably offered. You don't want to stay with us if you don't know anybody and then eventually you know the beautiful Sapporo catches his eye end and rural or have you say his name allows her to be married to an Egyptian which is an interesting thing but is not well.

By this time, they probably discovered they probably figured my birth, a descendent of Abraham.

They have some common common background and again fast-forward for between 22 and she gave birth to a son. He called his name Gershom and here's the meaning he said I been a sojourner in a foreign land. So this son's name commemorates the fact that I've been a stranger here. I'm a stranger that's given me a son essentially give me heritage clear blessing out here in the middle of nowhere. Yeah, I was just running away as far as I could for now were going to find out later in the block that Moses actually has another son with a different name and will get to that income, x-rays, and inviting. Heading is very interesting to hear that at this point mother's life he saying I'm coming to terms with the fact that I I'm stranger here a sojourner here in God's given me heritage yeah and effectively setting up home here yeah signals to me that he's not intending to go a married woman. He started no household in all its looks like I'm saying this is pretty good also.

Here I have got family here and I really just find out here just format that was then this is now realizing what he ends up doing is shepherding his father-in-law's factum so you know it's like I'm happy out here and I don't have all the stress of being in Egypt and all that kind of stuff and sure my people may be under the thumb of Pharaoh over there and there captured but you know what can I do I try to save them and they just kind of said forget it Cory who made you just know we've noticed in its kind woven into the text here that Moses has an inherent sense of justice.

Yes, you see is inherently instantly a serpent draws water is willing to throw water in and cares for their sheep cried, and even imperil his life with shepherds plural right right let's get to the last version is credible. Meanwhile back at the ranch back to the ring. I picks up a kind of backup reframe it. Verse 23.

What are those days.

In the meantime many days the king of Egypt died and the people of Israel because of their slavery and they cried out for help. So things that were sick after Moses left their cry for rescue from slavery came up to God and God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and Jacob. God saw the people of Israel and God.

Even though Moses doesn't know how it's going down. God knows God has not forgotten God is not forgotten. An important part in important turning place in the story you it's huge. And even though even though Moses is determined to get himself out of the circumstance in Egypt and we know that's going to change pretty soon God has not lost his focus on his people in Egypt, even if Moses is lost his focus on his own people and the 70s are four very important statements right and lined up and you will hear the system because there are really pretty interesting. God heard God heard their cry. God remembered his covenant and he had forgotten it no means, he recalled it to mine and said, now's the time. He kept it forward is sliding forward and commemorated it yet. His promise.

God saw people he saw the reflection and God knew them, and that were no shows up in a bunch of different ways. The word that the early Hebrews used for intimate relational God's people, but it kind of it's an experiential knowledge night like I'm in your midst, and I know what you're going right. So God hasn't forgotten it all. However, you would think if you didn't know where the stories going. You would think yeah well it's too bad because your hand-picked guy right is often the in the on the other side of the go flock of bodies, tending sheep for his father-in-law. He sat fat dumb and happy and he's he's gone. You're going to have to come up with a new deliverer, so God. You kinda stuck your plan doesn't matter how much you understand the suffering there and how much you love your people. I'm sorry the guy you picked was a bad pic of you reading this story that come clearly and I live in the next chapter. Moses himself presents some extent sending good storytelling you like to point out these tensions.

This is attention right here. So now God hears and he's moved is deeply moved.

Always has been about the plight of his people, but this guy, this guy would rather tend sheep, then deliver his people back in Egypt. However, you could speculate and say will handle the years he spent in Midian, which by the way, is 40 years. He's admitting I think I have roughly yeah you would tend to think at this point it's too bad about this detour in Midian.

Maybe it's not a detour. Maybe this is a necessary part of Moses train train before you back and in fact you know when I mentioned before speculatively that they didn't recognize his leadership because he might've been my just been seen as a sellout to write Pharaoh and stuff like that. Maybe maybe this is a phrase I heard from some long time ago.

Maybe God needs to take Moses and whereas in the quarter Pharaoh.

He learned how to be a somebody yeah and Midian got had to teach them how to be a no I in them and that humility is what had to come back in order to equip him to be a good leader and has nothing to do this training the quarter. Pharaoh has everything to do with training is hard in humility and service and in the meantime while God is training Moses out there rattling around in the wilderness, Midian. In the meantime, the political system change changes as a resume change in Egypt that can guide the slavery increases the burden on the people increasing does not seem to be in a hurry here to let the story fully right. And God's timing is perfect and you have reminders of all that all the time. Many times if you disparage your op-ed about as much as I can take. Nothing's changing yet realize it.

God's timing.

He's got this down stealing some he doesn't flinch in and act to sooner to lease doing something bigger.

And other than you may be able to see.
