You pick up your Bible and wonder, is there more here than meets the is there something here for me. I mean it's just words printed on paper right may look like just print on the page but it's more than eight. Join us for the next half hour, as we explore God's word together as we learn how to explore it on our own. As we ask God to meet us there in its pages welcome to more than what you do the ground and they look up because there is a reality that they have to deal with greater reality of the deal with shadows can be help us about something that's really there today and he on more than Inc. and I'm Dorothy is it all the time.

Well, that's because that's what we all do that I can think of a better place.

I give a better place to study. Were you to do any work.

Well, I actually during the week when I am preparing to teach the studies that I leave.

I always have my stuff spread out here so it's a great place to do it. My central spot so we are continuing in the book of Hebrews and in an action coming to something of a high point in the conclusion. This this week and next week but it dawned on me if Donna me that this section when he read right now is it's apropos for this part of the calendar of this year 2020 was sure because this site. This broadcast is coming on September 18. September's September 18 on Saturday, two days ago was Yom Kippur on the Jewish calendar and that's the day of atonement. Probably the biggest calendar date for all Jews, the day of atonement us with her attendance peaks and stuff but it's where they really come to up peaks when you want to call it realization of their sin and dealing with their cinders fastens a lot of stuff the good on could look it up. Just Google Yom Kippur. That's what it's called Yom Kippur and the boat, but interestingly enough and go back in Leviticus and we always mentioned back in Leviticus and those books. It describes what goes on the day of atonement, and it happens it happened on the 10th day of the seventh month. That's what this is and want two days ago was in the Jewish calendar, but it really is dealing with the issue of sins, and dealing with the kind of a preeminent sacrifice for the nation of Israel member.

The two goats in the bowl that are sacrificed and that's that's mentioned is 16 and so it's it's interesting as a lead into this because that's very much on Jews mind right now is we do this broadcast is were a couple days after the date of atonement. That's consciousness of sin, the conscience of sin is really what they're there dealing with well and as I understand it, in these days in which we live as they come to the day of atonement. It is a reconciling and closing the books on last year's sin starting over with a fresh page on the coming years rent and very you know, in the Jewish Jewish mindset, repentance and confession are big deals at this time year or so, but what I want to point out to his and I segue into the section Hebrews 10 today is the fact of that they focus on this sacrifice, which they cannot do right now right is the temples not there, but an old-time Israel.

That was the case. The case was.

You need to do something to atone for the sins of the entire nation and so every single year, year after year after year on the 10th day of the seventh month you offered sacrifices and the writer of Hebrews brings us in here in the middle of Hebrews 10 he saying this repeated offer sacrifices now that Christ is come is obsolete no longer needed and that sort of sets up for where we are today as we come into Hebrews 10 well this idea is going to come up again and again that the law had said offer sacrifices.

God had set up this… LOL yeah why did it as it is a shadow indicator of the greater reality and so that's really what the writer of Hebrews is kind of finishing up that thought right in this chapter 10 solely we come into chapter 10 talking about the superiority of Christ's sacrifice, and as I think about Yom Kippur two days ago. I'm thinking yeah Christ is the superior sacrifice so you want to leave is often chapter 10 verse one just reducing through first couple research that were starting right in the beginning of chapter 10, and if you remember, he's the writer has talked about better things to come, and that the good things to come. He said we have a better covenant when battery promises we have better priestly having eternal redemption.

All of these batters he has talked about up to this point and now he's he's beginning in chapter 10. Well, 10 for obsolescent for the writer is simply this is the number, address, we have been so for since the law was but a shadow of the good things instead of the true form of these realities, it can never by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year make perfect those who draw near, oh okay wait sure of a shadow I think about that a little bit.

The fact that there is a shadow of something indicates that there is a something right. Wheelchairs us real concrete reality that the light is stopping on so that the shadow is created really helpful image, because sometimes we get confused and we think that the shadow is the reality right we confuse him or exactly. I was in some 23 when David says that though I walk through the valley of the shadow of right so anyway, the writer says the law is the just the shadow of those good things to come in real concrete reading in the shadows useful. Oh yeah, exactly. But you don't stop on the reality of the shadow there's a real reality right cast this casing so that the first lenses those sacrifices because they were a shadow can never make perfect those who draw near. Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered as worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sin. But in the sacrifices. There is a reminder of sins every four it's impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins that I he's he's really coming to the end of his superior sacrifice kind of thing because even even the shadow the shadow which is the sacrifices the goats and the bowls on the day they don't get you to where you need to be. That's why he says you know that the they failed to make perfect, and that we talked about that perfect world it's about coming to the end of the process and the completion of the process so nothing more is needed. So it is. So, actually, that sort of make sense to doing it year after year so they never really getting there and being continually reminded never internally dealt with right right so it becomes a reminder every year as they do it about what's going on what the problem is in their lives and that problem is sin itself so that that idea that no longer having any consciousness of sin while abiding awareness that testifies in size. That little voice and while you really messed that's right my own initiative forgot I have his own voice and we going not good enough. Good and so-so offering.

The blood of bulls and goats are satisfied does very graphically portrays do the something died as a result of your conduct right boy and it just reminded over and over and never really takes care of it and that you are the one who is deserving the death right right and and so we Artie talked about this, but this picture of the blood, the life is been in the blood into the blood shed for you and you benefit you benefit with life from another losing.

It's like that's a picture the book. This is always a strong wedding saying this is this is not going to get to there. This made me flash on our presentation that the apostle Paul made when he was on one of his missionary tours. He was up in the middle of what is present-day Turkey up in Antioch (in acts 13 he he closes his presentation to the Jews up there and says basically this you know, he says, so let it be known to you therefore, brothers, that through this man Jesus forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, and by him everyone who believes is freed or justified from everything from which you could not be freed by the law. All right, this is the key just cuts to the quick and says this law, the sacrifice of bulls and goats cannot justify sucking or free from this process keeping the law. Is not free yeah and that was that was Paul's big messages traveled around the world and spoke to Jews.

He was a synagogue care of the Jews.

Are you saying that that sacrifice to snack. I get you there and here the rated P persists not to get to your document you not come to completion because of that, but it is up potent reminder your problem right so that's what it was over through and through and so he says was the answer that the new covenant is the answer that the answer to the problem of sin, not a reminder sin. But the problem of sin is the superior sacrifice and so we've been talking about this new covenant. The blood of Christ, really, from the very beginning.

Really yummy letter and again if you've just joined us were in the letter to the Hebrews right. Chapter 10. So let's read on. Consequently, when Christ came into the world to Scott's anointed appointed one plumage in the world.

He said sacrifices and offerings. You have not desired body prepared for me in burnt offerings and sin offerings you've taken no pleasure. Then I said, behold, I have come to do your well God as it's written me in the scroll of the book when he said about you neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and sin offerings, and these are offered according to the law. Then he added, become, behold, I come to do your will. He does away with the first in order to establish the second. And by that well. We have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Well – I will use that phrase once for all this good study technique when you come across a phrase that is repeated every time you find its broken afresh. Go back and see where it was before. Because this is probably come up half a dozen times chapters once for all. And it's always in the context of sacrifices right again reminder Yom Kippur this year. You know you duty sacrifices over and over and over that there is a once for all sacrifice so there's a huge question here when he says in burnt offerings and sin offerings you've taken no pleasure. He's quoting Psalm 40 right but if God wrote the burnt offerings and sin offerings into the law. How is it that that doesn't please.

So what is in this passage helps us so that's kind of a question that should be arising in your memory. It got asked for wise enough pleasing to write indeed. Actually in Isaiah 1 God says it's worthless.

I'm counting all of your trampling of my courts with the blood of bulls and goats is right worthless because they were coming without the heart. They were thinking.

All we can slaughter enough bowls and shed enough blood to satisfy God. Yeah and I don't even makes me flash back to when you guys talking about circumcision were back in Genesis and even at that very beginning. He says you know the circumcision, the physical circumcision is not the deals, the circumcision of the heart. Ryan comes out in the very beginning in Genesis where he talks about the circumcision as a physical mark to show that you belonging right and Moses unpacks that in Deuteronomy exactly so so hard issue. The internal issue with this consciousness of sin. That's really the reality is not just the cuttings are noncitizen to help you shadow their shadow something is going on internally but the internal thing doesn't happen, then the shadows don't mean anything.

So it says over and over again. I've come to do your will to make it real acted out right in some 40 says I don't like to do your will. Oh my God, law is within my heart that raised the question in my mind just even as I was reading this today while what does please God, what is his will. If the if this passage says so clearly know that he's come to do the will of God, and that by that will, God's will, we been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus will what God requires. While all through the Old Testament God requires his people to be holy, right to left what he loves to be the cause them to be ready.

Think back to the Shema. Deuteronomy 6 love the Lord your God with all your heart you're selling might know and I know I'm these are things that struck me as I was preparing to talk with you all about this today that the doing of God's will is where we get confused right right that the doing of God's will, comes from the heart. And yet it's it's clear Jesus. Is this a couple place like as I recall in Matthew several places that you know out of your heart comes thing that your heart comes evil stuff. The heart is actually the reality of who you want that stuff to come to stuff that comes out is kind of the clue you in about what's inside visible heart, which is just junk right so that that's the real reality so to do your will and to love your will and to love what God loves in the will of God himself. That's the real heart of the issue is a hard issue in these these blood sacrifices were meant to remind you that you're not lined up with God's will. If you're doing sin your you're going off the rails in the wrong direction and because of that life is not coming your way except through the death of another right so it's it's a very strong and you know we say we use that word sanctified here in this and that and remember, you have to remember every time you see that word sanctified it it it does the process of bringing you to complete separateness of housing and it really it always has the idea pull you out of something into something and so we talked about sanctifies talking about pulling out of the muck that we live in you out of the influence of evil and sin, all that stuff it messes you up. He's actually to pull you out of that the stuff that your consciences man I'm all messed up. He is actively pull you out of that and the place you get to when it's finished. No to us when you get perfected. That's where your outside of that, so God in the process of pulling us out of this world junk and sin which is so pervasive it actually is not on the outside of us. It's on the inside of God's will that we be sanctified that we may hold a way out from that from the death and the sin to be near him.

Yeah. So if you really want to simplify the old and new covenant, the old covenant told you how up to your waist. You were coming, says, I'll pull you out of that blood of Christ and that's it. That's a whole different thing. So there's really nothing wrong with the first covenant. You know the original covenant, the covenant that the well with the with the central idea, but God said, though he found fault with it yet faulty family that was was the fact that we couldn't keep it. We couldn't keep it. He always knew we couldn't right, but it served a very powerful purpose.

Like Paul says to tutors and point us to our right and our need is Christ, and that comes in the second covenant, the new covenant together, the forcefulness, like bad news.

The second is like good news in a sense but but even you know, even he says of the law of Moses was good but it was limited and it had its usefulness, but its usefulness is now kind waiting to know what Christ is come, we move on to the new covenant about not just coming to a reminder sent by coming to a solution to sin.

And that's what he does in the body of Christ. That's what is a superior sacrifice and that's where you only need to do once okay so we need to read on. Every priest is verse 11 verse 11 wearing Hebrews 10 verse 11 and every priest stands daily at his service offering. Repeat the same sacrifices. Religion can never take away sin. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet.

For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified right right there once for all for all time. He's done it. There's nothing more to be added as easily sat down right that takes us clear back to beginning the block right and it also. It also emphasized the need to sit down the right and we talked about this before but he's he's returning to his place of authority and power. Actually, symbolically speaking in all enthronement stuff like that. But what he saying is what he was sent to do is done right is Telus it's done and done once and that you have to keep doing Christ does not need to come back every couple years and I again for the people because that one time sacrifice pay for once for all. The single single offering, not the repeated offerings and it's done well and again it's God's will that we be holy and he has made that so right through the offering of the blood of Christ, right, it's not anything we don't sign up for it and say I will I will I will because the new covenant says God says I will I will I was God who does all the pledging new heaven and and where were the first covenant was misinterpreted by the Jews. They thought if I'm really dreadful. If I do this good enough just do this really really will toe the line, and when he sacrifices and and it's it's up to me to do that, that if I do that perfectly.

I'll be okay and in that mindset, bubbles over in the time of Christ, and even bubbles over the time of now is basically what I do is going to change whether or not I'm safe or not. And in this passage in all classes in the new and old covenant. That's not the issue is not what you accomplish. It does, and in the sacrifices in Moses time they were just reminders the fact that man you messed up this week and you mess up next week and you going to be offering sacrifices and blood all the time for your pervasive sinfulness that that's a bummer message at the whole point of the new covenant is that what Jesus did raise enough and I think I said this last week or maybe the week before when Paul says it so succinctly in second Corinthians 521 change he made him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf that we might become the righteousness of God him so this is the completeness of this one summer months so nothing more needed so the writer of Hebrews is using a very familiar image they know about the sacrifices they go through nieces look that that's all done.

In fact, I've always wondered whether Jew when they were going over and over and over and over and offer you know sacrifices and lambs and goats and bulls, and doves. All this blood I always wanted, or the thing themselves. When will this be done when can I stop doing problem is if you're sinful, you can't. There's nothing you can do to stop that. But in Christ. You can put all that down and see well and those who who really had hearts for God and have hearts for God always understood. I think said this was a shadow, I mean David wrote about it and somehow I think a lot of Jews picked up the imagery they got it they really got it a sense of desperation where you throw your hands up to God to God help me.

I am not bad yeah so it's it is just great good news. Should we push on yeah yeah okay so in verse 15 and the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us after saying this is the covenant that I will make with them after those days right after the sacrifice of Messiah. This is the covenant I make with them after those days, declares the Lord will put my laws on their hearts and write them on their minds. And then he adds, I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more. Where is forgiveness of these, there is no longer offering for sin. Yea, we do not have to Dragon goat down to the temple and write slaughter that poor animals, blood right in order to cover our sin or in a modern context volunteer for more voluntary things a church to do kind of work off your sinfulness by doing good. You know, change the balance of good to bad in my life that doesn't work, see the writer Hebrews and the next chapter I think is going to say let's offer to God a sacrifice pleasing to him, which is the fruit of lips that give thanks exactly something since change sacrifices different for us now so here in these words right here he really he brings the soup the sacrifice issue of Christ over and he brings us to a closely bingo work done. That's the end of at once for all, and he comes back he revokes his Jeremiah 31 past yeah brought before any and what a fascinating thing again. We I just you can underscore this enough. The law of God, which is a statement of righteousness, a heart of righteousness is now written on our hearts right not apply externally to our actions is actually written on arch which means that we delight in righteousness right from the inside out. So right is the opposite of what Jesus says from the heart comes all the sea voices will not guess what's in your heart. Now my law, my statement of righteousness is in your heart and you delight in doing this, and we don't have to apply, and you know I was speeding along your life on bookplate from the outside because you love doing righteousness. So you remember that when that young man came to Jesus and said, tell me what is the greatest commandment in the law right is, essentially, I got I got to find that wanting do it Jesus's answer was, and I think three of the four Gospels record that employers the greatest commandment love God with all your heart, mind your soul your mind your strength love him with everything you are and love your neighbor as yourself.

That's always been the heart of what God requires of man that we love God and then we love what he loves and comes from inside us that heart issue is the true reality rather than right rather than the shadow right that's the true reality. So Jesus came to change the true reality of your heart by writing on your heart, righteousness, something that you love and and and and you know Jesus also said if you love me you'll you'll do my commitment to do what I said because you love what Jesus lot right so that's is that packages all tied together and here we are. Finally, finally, in reality being transformed from the inside out, so that our outward actions.

Metatron transformed her and I always say Jesus told people, you know, people by their fruits by the outside, but you'll know what's in their heart based on reckoning LSR insight is going to find what yeah and so now instead of trying to fake it on the outside.

God can transfer the insight that now that righteousness leaks out it it looks like the same thing on the outside but the flow is different. It's not fake. True, it's real fruit from a transfer I was. It might look the same on the outside, people attempt to make it right. The same right. I call it fake fruit. You know I need to do these good things and stuff right but but now it and so now you have sit down wondering what you have to accomplish.

We know what to do today what good things to add to my list that was equivalent of the work, thinking of the first government by your what website Christ today because what I do bad this week. No these transformed from inside for one time once and for all supplies not only to my sins in the past. But all this in the future. Completed. Nothing more is so is an essential study schedule is to look for those repeated ideas and phrases. And that's really what he's driving him here once for all at the accomplishment, the perfection, nothing more. Being needed as that common phrases that we run into so often in our body. Believers in Jesus is enough Jesus's analysis is in Jesus enough and because of that embracing that truth we can rest and so we start this wonderful place that got it always intended for us to live in rest, but sin always destroys always brings separation from God destroys that rest and so he's going to slowly make his way toward that ID again what God intends for us. This rest, but he had to deal with the problem of sin. First, and here we have the superior sacrifice in Christ once for all.

And so next week as we start into the rest of chapter 10 is going to start off with a nice summarizing word there therefore so wrap it all up and talk about the superiority of the superior spirit not only of sacrifice but of the high priest, so will be joyous and because just a wonderful wrap up with many many weeks before he gets real practical Exactly. So I'm Jim and Dorothy and we are just delighted with what we hope you're keeping up with this because we think this is probably the best stuff and so join us next week as we continue in Hebrews here on more than Inc. you
