Welcome to the Kerwin Baptist Church broadcast our desire is for the word of God spread throughout all me know join is now for a portion of one of our services here at Kerwin Baptist Church located in Kernersville, North Carolina James chapter 1 were to continue in our series of facing your Giants and today we like to deal with the giant of temptation and of all the Giants this quite possibly might be the biggest.

The giant of temptation.

In fact, it's so big that I might obviously spend two weeks on this and are two separate things on temptation, but I might spend two weeks on this temptation is huge. James chapter 1.

Look at verse two. If you will.

James says my brother and counted all joy when ye fall into divers temptations or diverse temptations we obviously for those that are new. It doesn't mean that you can go scuba diving. It simply means diverse means different kinds of temptation all right. Notice verse three knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. Verse 12 Blessed is the man that endure temptation that Warden door means to speak. Did you go through it without changing you. We endure temptation for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. Let no man say when he is tempted I am tempted of God, for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither attempted see any man but every man is tempted when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust has conceived it. Bringing forth sin, and sin, when it is in his bringing forth death.

Before I pray, let me explain something very quickly. Many people will say I heard one and it was one-time say well I believe God is tempting me, listen to me. God does not tempt God tests he'll test you, but he doesn't tempt you, God does not use something bad intent you with it. That would be against his character. If you're being tempted with something that's wrong that's of Satan but God does sometimes test us, whether we will do right in a certain situation. Whether will make the right decisions. God never tempts the only test. Let's pray father I pray as we deal with this giant today that our folks would see how big this giant really is Lord. I just pray that you give victory to our people on this matter of temptation in your name we pray.

Amen. You know the word temptation brings different thoughts and pictures to each other. Some people maybe a hot fudge sundae is temptation to you for some maybe I don't know why you're laughing right now for some maybe it's a Krispy Kreme doughnut for some maybe us, say, a businessman, that's under pressure. Maybe a corner bar.

This is temptation. Maybe for some here would be a fantasy of someone at work is your temptation. It could be someone I'm something I've haven't dealt with people did a lot of traveling and different things.

Maybe it's a movie at a motel room. That's a temptation for some it could be but in a different addiction. Maybe an alcohol addiction. Maybe a nicotine addiction for some it. It could be even for some of our young people like teenagers maybe a girlfriend is a temptation or maybe the wrong type of crowd is a temptation for some it could be a magazine rack at a store. For others it could be an Internet when you have availability to it. I don't know there's always different things that tempts different people but want to ask you a question here this morning. I shall like to answer it for you and it is this preacher while I keep trying. Why keep trying to overcome what has defeated me so many times. Why keep trying while why should I even struggle with this anymore preacher I've gone to the altar and how many times I've told God I'm sorry I don't how many times I felt guilty. I felt rented I felt rotten. I continually do something that I feel bad about it. I know it's wrong, Isaac, God forgive me and within a matter sometimes hours I'm right back doing the same thing. Why should I even keep fighting it without a lot of people in an office. Why should I even try to give you some reason for executing the message today of why you want to keep trying. Look at verse 12. If you will, is says blessed is the man that endure temptation for Winnie's tried, he shall receive the crown of life. Why should I keep trying. Preacher well I want to notice this number one defeating habit in your life will rob you of the confidence that you have in the power of God to give victory over sin. Look at me when you fighting a fight that you say well there's a sum it's common I can get victory over listen to me, that has robbed you of your confidence in Christ. We see Christ is able to give you victory please promise that we get access victory through him and God's word. But if we quit trying. It's all because of the power and the confidence that we have in him can I say this, that a simple habit will destroy your desire to share your faith usually was something has you and you can get victory over it.

You feel guilty you feel rotten you feel you feel dirty and there's no desire now for you to go out and share the gospel with others in Christ can do for them what in your heart you question what he can do for you.

Simple habit. If you if you quit trying and if you if you give up the fight and you sound is not going to try anymore. It would literally rob you of any desire, you would have to share Christ with others and individually years ago had a particular habit in his life and it had a friend is in the hospital and he said I really I can go to witness Thomas of what he says because I have this habit in my life and that man knows I have this habit in Ottawa look like a hypocrite mean that that totally robbed that individual of the opportunity to go share the gospel. Maybe when that person of the Lord because of a defeating habit in his life. You know that overcoming an addiction or an aura habit that makes you want to share God with others to see if you if you don't fight the battle you give up. It's going to make you not want to share the gospel.

But if you keep at it and God gives you victory that's going to make you desire to tell others how they some somebody that's in a lifestyle that's wrong the wicked, and they get saved and get right with God for men. They can't wait to go tell others about what God's done you of her brother Joe tell the story for years about winning Mark Potts to the Lord and man Mark first thing it took for the Joe to a trailer had every pothead and drug it in it and is I want to tell them they some is a desire when God gives you victory and you see that God forgives you of your sin that makes you want to go out until of that's why you keep trying.

That's why you keep fighting going to say this, that not dealing with a habit will lead to a hardened heart. So I said I keep fighting temptation because if you don't, your heart is going to get hard PC right now you feel better right now you feel guilty and you say, but I keep trying to overcome and I asked God to forgive me but I just can't get victory over three different if you stop trying before long you not get a feel guilty anymore and you're not get a feel wrong anymore and now it's not even going to touch your heart. You're not going to have any conscience about it in the Bible says our conscience can get it seared with a hot iron were not sensitive anymore to God. There's some people that have given up the fight that now they don't want to fight anymore.

Never will again because I don't even feel wrong for their sin anymore.

I am Robin uses as an illustration, I went to Bible College we obscenely. I live in a dorm and went to you too conservative Christian colleges that that point in we were allowed to have TV in our dorms at all and the one college was really liberal. It had a dating parlor with the TV unit that everybody can gather and watch like a ball game or something you know Jack and Tanner went to that liberal college with me. I made it had a TV actually in the college building for the other because they didn't have anything like that, you know I mean I read it once a year after church Sunday night. This college would pipe in cable and let you watch the football game on a Sunday night at that other cargoes, the only reason any kind of TV was laid in that campus well go three months not see anything on TV this you know you fat up found other stuff to do and when I would come home at Christmas time I watch TV MN. I would sit or think. I cannot believe how filthy TV is gotten in three months is a cuss word.

Every other word and just you know that the constant sexual references are pushed at unit and made a lot of this is actually ridiculous, but by the time my Christmas break was over before I went back I was used to it I does it it was that bad anymore. Go back called for another three months I come home in the summer like I can't believe it's gotten by the end of the summer did notice a thing.

You see, dear friends, is to me that if we give up the fight would temptation our heart can get hardened to where we don't even feel bad when we do wrong anymore, may I say this if you look at verse 15 says this then when lust has conceived to bring forth sin, and sin, when it is finished, brings forth death. That means this is why do I keep fighting preacher because sin always leads to another sin, if you allow one sin in your life and you allow that sin to take over and have placed before long it's going to produce others. Sin always leads to sin. This reason is this sin always leads to death of some kind sin when it is finished never says bring up why should I keep trying. What I fighting preacher when it's had victory over me so many times I'll tell you why, because of you and you victory over it will kill something, it will kill a relationship. Kill your relation with God they could kill a marriage to kill a job they can kill all kinds of things they could even kill you. Why should I keep fighting preacher are you allowing sin to destroy what is most important to you or your weaknesses slowly killing relationships with people you love. Cannot say this that one of the biggest non-mentioned addictions is our temper.

John know that every Dragon build a bridge on some things now are meddling.

Cannot say something our self-control or temperance. What produces our outward, our outburst of temper that is an addiction. And if we don't get victory over it. It can kill everything in our life. Want to notice. Number one this morning. The root of sin.

The root of selling. If you would.

Verse 13.

Let no man say when he is tempted I am tempted of God, for God cannot be temper with evil, neither tempted see any man but every man is tempted when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed you every week there is a all across America, people log files and they asked God to forgive them for things that they have asked God to forgive them for 10,000 time and we want to say. Well I tell you that you didn't really change. Always my dear friend, this is happened to me on the day there been times I've asked God to forgive me and I felt actually evil wrong about it and I could not have been more sincere and within a week I would do the exact same thing.

Am I the only unspiritual person here. Are we all together on this doesn't mean you're not sincere and it does mean you really don't desire to change it just means that sometimes we don't take the steps that are required to actually change we feel guilty and when we don't like the feeling of guilt, but we don't want to make the change and I'm here to tell you you cannot defeat temptation on your own.

You have to have Godself and if you do that you got understand where an All-Star lot of time you and I deal with sin like a teenager would do with weeds. It was in a teenager out the way to garden.

There had wondered who the first time the go. They know they get his pickup things and as long as I don't see it but a lot of times it'll move that dirt around and pull that root out and before long they stay or to bend a little green start popping up everywhere. These weeds you know why because it wasn't dealt with. They know we do.

Sometimes we come to unalterably say God forgive me. We have taken out that part so we don't see it today, but that root continues to grow. The root of sin is it will preacher what what is that mean to me. Well want to look at Genesis chapter 3 little different today that I normally just have interim one time but I want you to see because of this giant there's a couple things you need to see Genesis chapter 3 we find where Tim Tatian started the root of temptation is this. When we are drawn away of our own lust, and enticed. So where did start where did it happen first look at Genesis chapter 3 verse one now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made any set into the woman he 1/2 God said he shall not eat of every tree of the garden and the woman said unto the serpent, we may eat of the fruit of the tree of the garment of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said he shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest you die, and the serpent said unto the woman, he shall not surely die for God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be open and you shall be as gods, knowing good and evil in verse six and when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes and a tree to be desired to make one why she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her, and he didn't even listen to me saying this temptation of Eve was really to establish for themselves and identity apart from God. Satan tempted her to basically tell her you don't need God's word. That's where the root comes from.

You see, Tim Tatian establishes to pull us all away from God gives us an identity away from him and free offer that to her because they say if you eat of the street. To be wise just like him to be just like God he doesn't want you need that because he doesn't want that this will take care of everything and she believed him in a lie because if I eat this I don't need God anymore. If I eat this on equal with God. If I eat this, I can make my own decisions. I can do my own thing. You know what that is exactly what Tim Tatian does in our life that makes us desire and identity apart from God. It makes us get to the point in our life that we say you know what I can make my own decision. I can do my own thing. May I say this Satan was saying to her, God has lied to you, you can't trust him start looking out for yourself and establish an identity apart from God, look at me dear friend to me today the way society works. This is a bit technical, but I want you to hear me out. I talked to my Sunday school class about this.

Let me let me see if I can describe to you, oftentimes what decides what we are tempted with is our set of values.

What are self worth what we think it is that makes us successful.

Let me illustrate.

I got in Sunday school. We talked about temptation. If there's a gentleman. He has a wife and kids and for some reason, the way he was raised to think she's been taught or the people he's been around listen to me know if this man thinks that I am only successful if I provide a certain type of house or a certain type of car, or a certain type of lifestyle for my wife or my kids.

If I'm able to get them this and get them that and get all these things look at me now if that man has established that as success like I have to have those things.

That's what will make me worthy.

That's what will make me successful then look at me.

That man has now set himself up to be tempted because of our self-worth comes from anything else but God himself. Then we set ourselves up to be tempted. Let me illustrate. Here's why. Because if that's what he deems as successful and let's just say that he's having financial problems. He's trying to get all these things that he can afford and it puts him in debt now is got financial pressure coming on him.

Now the wife once other things she wants this and the kids want this. And this man thinks I'm not a good husband, Carl. Not a good dad unless I get all these things for my wife and for my kids that is automatically put him in a position that if he has an opportunity to be dishonest with money and gain that somehow now is willing to be tempted.

Now, in order to make myself worthy and successful now because that was so important to him. Now he is tempted with that. Look at me, but here's a man over here is a wife and kids.

He serving God and his priority as I want to be right with God. I want to serve God with my life. My priority is to try to live a holy life like God. His self-worth is not wrapped up in a house or car, or things he has his self-worth is whether I'm lacking in a way that makes God happy and satisfied. It is by doing what God wants and when that is a priority.

He's not to be tempted is bad with money over here. You know why because his self-worth is wrapped up in what money can get his self-worth is wrapped up in what God see is what happened in our society. So many of us are tempted with so many things you know why because we think these things are what's gonna make us worthy. We think these things are what's gonna make us successful.

Oftentimes a teenage young lady can grow up in a home without a dad. Without a male figure in their life. She's never got any kind of male affection and a lot of times a young lady can grow up and almost she can feel that you know what web never had. I was never been fulfilled and she thinks a male affection will fulfill that look at me that teenage girl it will be very easily tempted to have premarital relations with somebody you know why because she thinks that male affection is what she needs. Like any folks you and I have got to realize were the root of sin is what is the root of sin well within a deal with that hopefully next week with the three ways we are tempted lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes and the pride of life were to cover that next week will look at me. I want to know some you are tempted, based on where your self-worth lies. If your priority in your life is to make God happy you to be tempted differently than an individual that thinks your self-worth is wrapped up in things or in people.

Some men feel their self-worth is whether not there wanted or adored you take a man in his whole self-worth as he wants, wanted, and he doesn't feel like he gets attention and he wants satisfied with that. And maybe at home him and his wife are getting along and they don't have that great relationship with me. That man is set himself up to be tempted with a secretary at work see it all depends on what our value system is what is important and that automatically makes us we at certain temptation that for the root of sin comes look at me. Many were in the garden. They had perfection. There is a lot to say and do one thing they didn't have a you know I'm still worshiping God you can be like God and they filled dictation CE was tempted by what Satan tempted her with Adam was tempted because now you want to be without the woman, now Adam, who had lived by himself, who had communion with God and did not have a helpmeet God created a helpmeet and Eve Eve was tempted, when Satan said how you could be like God.

Adam was tempted when he was told her to be separated from your life forever and animate that fruit. They were both tempted with different things. Because different things were important to each of them resume dear friend you got a look at what's important to me. What is it that I measure success with. What is it that I measure happiness with you think you have to have things or people for happiness yourself up the root of sin.

I want to know to secondly in this passage.

The results of sin will give you whatever, seven.

The Bible says in the eyes of them both were opened and they knew that they were naked and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons as soon as Adam and Eve sinned. What was the first result. Shame they never experience shame before you know it troubles me about our society on a whole.

Nobody has any shame anymore. Nobody is ashamed. God girl can do wrong and have a result of that, and I'm ashamed about. I think they're almost happy this way life is. That's not the way life was meant to be. That is totally against what the Bible said to do. Oftentimes young people know that there's no shame for doing wrong. There's no shame Ringo we we say were Christians and we say were a member of the church and we say we love the Lord. But here we go all the lifestyles doing things that really again, for the Bible says saying. Sin brings shame. Also now been there the first woman in man created they had no reason to be a shame, but when sin came into their life. Now they were ashamed and that's always the first step you know I listen to me. The first of feeling they had apart from God member saying to them to pull them apart from God and the first thing they experience when departing from God, wishing in us.

The first thing you and I will experience to we start take our life and we go in a direction opposite of God. Shame will come one way or the other. The second thing I notice is this a good verse eight and they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day as as God always had and Adam and his wife themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden. They had spent time fellow shipping with God every day and then they go and they sin. Now they have shame and guess what, they won't even come out and talk to God. Now why because now they were experiencing fear. They never experience fear before they never had to be afraid of anything, but they ran and hid for fear. Guess what, that's a liberation from God will do to you. It will bring for your cannot say something you and I really don't have anything to fear.

When were living along the principles God has laid out for us when you're close to God.

You don't have to fear circumstances. Guess what, when you been saved, you mean have to fear death is heaven. There's nothing to fear Miami but you'd apart from God.

Now you're on your all you got everything to fear because God's protection and God's blessing has been with the way by temptation, shame, fear, notice verse 12 and the man said the woman who Mel gavest to be with me.

She gave me of the tree and I did. He the Lord God said in the woman what is it that thou hast done and the woman said the serpent beguiled me, and I did he look at me, God comes down. What is Adam, who he blames the woman what are the woman do she blame Satan third thing you experience with sin is blame, start blaming others. One of the biggest things when you counsel with people is this is to somehow tried to make them take account and responsibility for their actions because they want to blame this that happen to them in the want to blame this person that did such such because they did that.

In fact he got more involved in fatal that she was that she got mad because now she was always the goody-goody that she is praying for him and when he came in I got saved and really got soda for God not made her feel guilty.

No, not even together now.

One problem after another. You know why because we want to blame everybody else. That's what sin does. Sin says hey I'm apart from God I don't have to give account to him all blame everybody else. That's what separation from God brings why preacher should I fight temptation.
