This morning we honor not only the dad but also the living, the survivors of the lost platoon unit that suffered one of the worst ordeals on the American side during the war in Vietnam. John Blackstone will report our cover story your line where you to explore numerous this for sure was going to die. CBS News first told the story of the lost platoon in 1967 W. 1982, we met the survivors of the Vietnam Memorial.

Now, 50 years after the battle, they reflect on lives lived and lives lost. May you never ever be forgotten ahead on Sunday morning. Questions this morning for Al Franken, a man whose career has spanned two very different but very public worlds to pre-does the asking people going to stop thinking about themselves and start thinking more about me.

Al Frank Franken. I think Sir session should come back and then there's that Al Frank, I think he owes it to this committee to come back later on Sunday morning, you and Walter Mondale. The caption here is can I do the senator from Saturday Night Live.

I don't know don't know what's so funny is the question of the day for Kevin Hart, a comic of uncommon talent is talking to our Tracy Smith Kevin Hart is one of the biggest comedians on the planet. He learned early on that being funny limitation buddy was the fight. Funny was the mess with funny to be around funny guy.

That's what was girls want to date. The funny guy got really great way to much coffee. The comedic confessions of Kevin Hart head on a more likely heard by now, Gregg Allman of the Allman Brothers band died yesterday at his Savannah Georgia home at the age of 69, together with his older brother Duane and his bandmates Gregg Allman played a very big role in creating what came to be known as Southern rock a few years back.

He granted a candid and touching interview to our chip read which will be revisiting a little later this morning, and more.

Jim Axelrod watches some yard work at a former Navy base serene all chill takes us inside the other CIA, Knighton is back on the trail for us again this summer. This time that great Smoky Mountains National Park featuring radio and TV personalities.

Talking business support team and played the lost platoon of the Vietnam War is a story CBS News has been covering for half a century of the eight survivors, three have been sharing their experiences with us over the years. This morning we bring their story up-to-date to begin our light CBS News colleague Bruce Morton sets the stage's report is from 1982. Some of these fellows forgotten the names but troubleshooters never forgot the day he took his wife and children to stay with friends and drove to Washington. Remember Lorenzo left his house in Peekskill, New York and went to Washington remembering Rountree from Chicago remembering to shop in the plate did remember one day in May 1967 when North Vietnamese Americans live 15 check their bodies to jewelry our weapons and ammunition left it only selects morning about 830 when a company came and got us to render Rountree medic them out over 15 years times years and victim rooms. Rountree had come to Washington to remember that forgotten time when so many of their friends and they almost magically remember and then they went to the will to remember their different they found Robertson in charge of the middle of looked and found the names of older did they took pictures so they could carry their dead friends me flooding back and forth as will these guys are you percent never covered. Rountree and his two buddies from the lost platoon were clearly bearing the emotional scars of battle back in 1982. So how are they today John Blackstone picks up their story used today. After most of his tune was killed in the Vietnam jungle Rountree has found serenity in northern California River teaching another Vietnam vet how to fly fish all their lives. A lot of this is healthy for us to hang out together. It's good to be here in this environment with another veteran, Rountree prefers not to dwell in the battle left shrapnel in his but he survived by playing fighting when we forget 22 men who died never will. So I don't think there is days ago by that I don't think about their families and the loss heard that they in Texas motor survivor battle to be darker as a wall full of memories when you're today time that time years ago is never far from his thoughts there all so shy something you might hope the 230 rush down that smoke rings in the back your line where you taste blood yes.

I thought for sure was going to die. 50 years later the day carried this list is the guys that were killed in my platoon think up a whole section 1982 organize the survivors reunion is return many time suits. I feel calm this going there and see my friends names and I am okay with. I know that with my life.

Coming home is hard. Rountree now admits that back in 1982 he was struggling to stay sober battle he's been waiting some changes in my life be able to look out of nowhere were I could accept it not be at war with it was anger about it. It's not so much survivor's guilt. Survivors for 50 years the lives of the survivors have largely been defined by that one day, May 18, 1967.

I have a daughter who got married five years ago and insisted that her wedding would be on May 18. While this chart so I try to talk her out of it and she said no I want that to be a happy day for you that wedding day May 18 you walk your daughter. I walked her down and the guys who fought side-by-side with me that day sitting in the reception and after church and on may 18th edition anniversary of the battle, joined her father more story not allowed. This is so good to hear all you can honor these guys. Thank you for your service.

Now page from our morning on May 28, 1908, 109 years ago today day one of the creator of 007. That was the day Ian Fleming was born in London, the wealthy member of Parliament. Fleming held a job in Naval intelligence during World War II.

He wrote his first spy caper Casino Royale in 1952 Jamaica vacation home borrowing his heroes name birdwatching book author Fleming wrote 13 more thrillers attracting a Cold War. Following that included Pres. John F. Kennedy after American U-2 spy plane pilot Francis Gary Powers let himself be captured alive by the Soviets in 1960. CBS naturally went to Ian Fleming to find out what bond would have done. I like to write about it from taking that suicide will James Bond the silver screen, 1962 the first series long after Ian Fleming's death in 1964 Sean Connery to Daniel Cray and all seven stars of play 007 including Roger Moore who died this past week.

We remember Gregg Allman talking writer Brothers band especially poignant given that we learned of the death of Gregg Allman at his home in Savannah, Georgia the age of 69 by way of tribute we take a look at the remarkable portrait chip repainted of Allman back in 2011 by now the song like right Allman tired of singing just got some off your chest is there is no question the Allman jam band and years Southern rock special place in history. The band's musical journey began in Nashville. Gregory Allman on December 8, 1947 year and 18 days after his brother Duane. Tragedy struck early father was murdered by a hitchhiker.

When Greg was just to big brother Duane had to fill the void. So he was kind of a father figure somewhere else and big brother. He knew that much more live to be 96 baby brother but was first discovered music when as a nine-year-old. He saw a neighbor with a guitar, so did you fall in love with the guitar.

The first part Greg Wayne quickly became a virtuoso. They played together until nine when Wayne assembled what would become the Allman Brothers. Greg was reluctant to sign on, except because certain go after two years there is that a long way down.

No person you and I had everything in the song written by title, but back home always sweet Barbara with sweet Mary Jo and I just just sounds flabbergasted. Inspiration came to him and of all places, a grocery store. I was except for this one Spanish was a where someone that's just took off on this one lady freaked out this band released to elbow gaining little attention until 1971 when they recorded a performance of New York's legendary album, catapult them to worldwide me this day is considered one of the live albums of all time, but just three months later.

It all came crashing down member when you lost them. Yeah, yeah, too clear on October 29, 1971 Duane Allman was riding his motorcycle down Hillcrest Avenue would make a truck turned in front of him he had to speed hundred and parked Duane Allman was dead at 24, the band carried on Doris vets shouldering more of the load, but with his long blonde hair and Rudy's voice. Ray got most of the attention more than he bargained for. After his high-profile marriage in 1975 to share remember going to the grocery store just what is happening.

She said I told you this would happen share told you that one. They were married for about four years. One of Allman's multiple marriages he leaves behind five children over the decade, the Allman Brothers disbanded and then regroup several times in laying out your residence. New York City's good in 2014.

Allman also made a series of solo out the last one will be released this coming September. It seems the man who first thing the road goes on forever more than four decades ago was anymore stretching what the board is to graduation day at so many colleges is what the chefs talk is to the school known as the other CIA serving also shows us why I am much better at working with small flowers and she is much better at making the larger sky start and police codex dorm room in Hyde Park New York and you'll find in double garden with roses, peonies, fuchsia eyes fire around 300 and it's their homework, decorating, and nine tier wedding cake walks in and I think our bakers that happen to roommates are baking and pastry students at the culinary Institute of America, also known as the other CIA placed Julia Child once called the Harvard cooking schools should start to write off the bat understand what's going on in your wireless and requires a motion among nearly 3000 students is James bit more hot Australia. My family were kind of baffled by the fact that I want to culinary school because I originally was studying engineering and I said well you know what I want to go study for and they would like okay what CC Cooper is from Washington DC and enrolled after serving in the Air Force.

How different is that Air Force more rocks structure that little tale details that begin with the fundamentals like knife skills. Some of them are close to the money. This is very close skip them a little tighter, leading to more advanced work in the Latin cuisine like this winetasting so more Apple Pear is more stone fruit is more citrus or tropical even 3D printing which nine restaurants are also classrooms where students both clock tables: Mary Institute of America started as a trade school for 50 GIs returning from World War II.

It would go on to change how shots were taught says CIA president Tim Ryan, the European model the French model was based on apprenticeship.

It was the learn as you go. You're going to be an indentured servant to me for three years and then in 1946, along comes CIA and completely blows up that notion on how chefs are not just trained but educated price it costs around $33,000 a year to attend. That's more than many grads make in their first year of school. There are occupational hazards. We have an unusual report, the cut and burn report. I probably can fairly safely say that no other college or university burn report and basically that tracks you know who got burned got cut cuts and burns healed of course I bid you dream big dreams sky CCing James all recent grad lasting success yourselves graduated so late.

I had Kevin Hart harvesting from childhood pain was Kevin Hart is one of our most popular comedians which makes him the perfect choice to answer our occasional question what Tracy Smith that the owners more like a rock star for the 37-year-old entertainer with the highest median on the last eclipsing runner-up Jerry Seinfeld.

You need to wipe down any built this comedic Empire, not so much by telling jokes, but by talking openly about things people usually try to hide like his fear of the dark role towards the hallway, walking, leaning backwards thinking and then there are the embarrassing stories about his family. Like the time his drug addicted dad showed up at a spelling do something for your soul to share that with everybody personal thing, he does come from pain like things right now as you go home. I got you. You'll laugh it probably is. And if pain really is the true source of comedy is a deep well to draw Kevin Darnell Hart was born in Philadelphia in 1979, the younger of two boys. Dad was in and out of jail, and Kevin says a role model for what not to do if he had made his mistakes live in person. I will probably say no and in an experimental manner.

You really think so.

If you have your dad make those mistakes.

The only reason I don't do drugs so drugs do I witness it first. They lived in a tiny apartment on the city's North Side and mom did her best to make it home brother slept in the hallway shot that place was 500 ft.². Maybe slow people to feel salty so you have a small someone over one of my friends as well. So Grassley made a grab schools growing up in one of Philly's toughest neighborhoods, Kevin used comedy armor buddy was.

The fight was the mess with the funny was to be around the funny guy. What's girls want to date. The funny guy. Not really. Not really a perfect place to put that place to put that line all shut funny off women show mother he wanted to try standup time. She agreed to help pay his rent for a year on the condition that he read the Bible. She gave him read by we can. Some Bible time Gone and I am getting calls Kevin is right and one night after we got may have been a month, maybe a month a back-and-forth memo mom Bible to write checks for Chatham dated throughout the year. She had to see your success. Now Nancy Hart died in 2007 and Kevin somehow managed to find humor in that to cancer know this.

So one of them talking model comes up back Will let you know what this is going to think about shipping nice for her to see me now. Hello can see she does that. I gotta know you don't get here by yourself not religious at all, but religious enough to believe she's there.

I think that someone's looking down on him. Kevin Hart is made more than two dozen movies, many of them like the right along serious somewhat. He also has a growing family, two kids from a previous marriage and one on the way with his new bride, but as he admits in a new book as hard as he's worked. He plates getting arrested in 2013. Do you think that was the big wake-up call to DUI like ham and I'm not play stupid anymore T0 when I woke up from yes but you don't drink anymore. You just don't drink. Now he gets around LA in a kind of rolling command center usually working the phone.

He talks about moving away from the buddy films he's known for. In fact he just wrapped a more dramatic role with Nicole Kidman and Brian Cranston. This is a guy who knows where his heart never walking away from never wasting much coffee love the fact that I had a breath that I can perfect what and the beauty of stand-up comedy is by what's it like talking sports played the right neighbor in the right place at the right time to make all the difference. Just ask Steve Hartman whenever you claim as it did in Manchester. People search for words of hope. This past week that search led many back deep into their child. Mr. Rogers was Mr. Fred Rogers once said when I was a boy I would see scary things in the news. My mother would say to me. Look for the helpers you will always find people work helping thousands share `on social media last week, including a senior writer from entertainment weekly named Anthony Perez can `almost seems too good to be true right" that will be Abraham Lincoln saying something that he never really said I never said it. Mr. Rogers said that I knew from experience. Mr. Rogers was like that in real life, which is why "he added a personal story from when he was in college that made it all the more poignant on Twitter. He began struggling lonely dealing with a lot of broken pieces and not adjusting well. All the TV on, was Mr. Rogers. I just mesmerized watch the entire episode real scheme.

A few days later going downstairs to the lobby of the student union in the elevator opens and Mr. Rogers standing ice got in the elevator, he said, were you one of my television neighbor one of your neighbors Anthony told just watch the show and help me feel better.

Would you like to tell me what was upsetting you have anybody that I could talk to. I feel like his trolley car fell off the track put back on and that was all he needed and one point I said I'm really sorry about not tying you up somewhere else to go and he said sometimes you're just the right place. I looked for the people who were trying to help. Mr. Rogers was just the right place again last week reminding us to look the helpers, first responders, global leaders in carrying neighbors across the world who still outnumber evil William the one surprises me that you don't know this issue still to come.

Did you enjoy meeting me Sen. Al Franken is time for someone new ideas and that person is me out a morning on PBS and here again is Jane Hawley Al Franken back in his days as a cast member on sat night live these days.

Al Franken is United States Sen. on Capitol Hill, which makes them fair game for some questions and answers here again is Chip Reid is the confirmation surprises me that you don't know this issue. Many of Pres. Trump's nominee is going to question your Sen. from Minnesota use of the student debt is increased 5000% 980% so and those questions are well known in some case law not necessarily ones he was 30 years ago and I are my memory laws of this nature, and my memory was my support for those guys remember rolling your billing of loss.

People talking about the buzz about you running for president right I've always been you don't sound like you personally handle cases that you said you personal. I was on a radio interview without any records and that was my memory first time I've had nominations for Republican president.

I thought that some people that he nominated were not right for the job. If there is any evidence that anyone affiliated with the Trump campaign communicated with the Russian government in the course of this campaign, what would you do so. Franken unaware all those activities but hearing back memories of what made Al Franken a household name in the first class that you enjoy meeting me.

I hope you are as much fun on that diocese. You were on your couch well all my Lord. Well, I think we found our Saturday night live.

Never conversation on Saturday night. I call Al Franken lately he's been coming to grips with the tension, politics and when I first came to be very careful yet. You were very careful and I thought that was so funny on Saturday night live.

I know he's not funny. Well it wasn't grim. There were some grim things happening, but there are not as grim as now, is it hard not to be funny, yes, character matters, Franken learned the perils of funny during his first Senate campaign in 2008. Supporters of his opponent, Norm Coleman combed through the Franken comedy for serial. Nobody likes getting your chimera, a writer, they take everything you wrote her sad and clear through a very expensive machine called the DM riser the humor. This was built with Russian technology and what it does is it takes all the contacts comes as just offensive writes about the humor riser in his new book, giant of the Senate. As for his campaign. In that first Senate run. He says it was a serious terms.

The high married now for almost anything that featuring his wife Fred that I struggle with alcohol. I really was the content of the opposing tray as person I Franken I now stood by me think so. I now always comes through some really are confident Frannie is so wary people show business as well is what they expect to have the trophy wife 20 years younger than me and I have a trophy wife, but she is only Franken says Frannie and his staff have spent the last few years trying to keep him on the straightman and narrow even when it concerns his grandchildren are your grandkids impressed by the fact that your US Sen. I think you can tell when he was born, I decided to be funny.

He called me center is that grandpa really might Funny and I don't know normally when I got there I go, this is pretty neat. Sen. from Rice today is the inherent through others like Hubert Humphrey, Walter Mondale and Paul Wellstone Franken is eager to go into the weeds on policy. We must protect net neutrality, whether searching for the right words for a speech about equal access to the Internet is best for me issue embraces our most basic constitutional freedoms or serving his constituents a breakfast of warm porridge and I have three grandchildren. I don't want them saying grandpa you were sent you new climate change is happening.

Why did you do anything about it and also why are you alive. The Russians and feared in the 2016 election Franken has been a dog and with help from calling for a special gate.

The administration's Russia he should come back and explain himself, Mr. Chairman.

Typical headline these days. Republicans near-total exasperation referring to the day tomorrow will be Republicans at total near-total exasperation where the Democrat we reached total exasperation long time ago and so as Democrats look to 2020. Franken's name has popped up on some president Franken. It's like something that could on Saturday night live weight is still the Al Franken yesterday for the 2020s really Al Franken anywhere on the center now supporting a great Franken never does run for president. There's one headline your shortest it's right there over and over and over on a poster in his Capitol Hill office.

Franken declared winner and that's note or Al Franken running for Senate. No joke and I'm afraid some of my colleagues have been just as guilty. No joke. Al Franken line. Thank you. CBS News Franken may not know what his future home but it's pretty clear never outlive funny former three term senator three now about time all vacation to a recent survey by the research on GM 16.2 thousand 15 that's still average of 20.3 days American are still far less than the average of 2.6 vacation days total of 662 million vacation days taken last year as to why workers leave vacation days on the 26%. They are taking vacation days makes them look less 23% said they don't want flexible 21% say they worry they would lose out on a raise or promotion, but it's not just the workers themselves pay a price for not taking all their vacation survey shows all those unused vacation days actually cost the American economy more than $200 billion in lost vacations, which is enough to support nearly 2 million more American jobs and how's this for irony. According to JFK employees who sacrifice vacation days in the belief that actually somewhat likely to have received a raise or bonus in the last year. Those who went ahead and took the time something on your long holiday all day. We observe tomorrow was inspired by a Southern tradition called decoration Day decoration Day can be marked for private as well as public reasons. As Connor Knighton discovered in one of our national parks on the trail and feels like way it is several different family come together on this Sunday afternoon for a chance to be reunited with their ancestors home in the South they call decoration Day flowers carefully placed on the headstone songs sandwiches years ago Scripture will Carolina decoration Day can only happen one day every year. Once 6000 homes here in the 1940s, most of those settlers were forced to leave the Fontana dam built by the Tennessee Valley Authority was created to provide power during World War II the nearby area that I am. It's time Johnson remembers well.

That said, Mildred grew up in these when Uncle Sam came calling her family packed up and moved Fontana Lake was created. The rest of the land became a national Park that respected the government made the displaced residents promise. Once the war was over they would build a road to provide access to those old family cemeteries Park Lakeview Drive driver 6 miles just suddenly stops after environmental delays, financial concerns, the road was never finished Swain County, North Carolina.

Call Lakeview Drive different name. You can't run for any elected office and come to Swain County without knowing about the road to nowhere. As part of Congressman Mark Meadows district place where many have come to distrust the federal government you when you've had promises broken so often in trust that has dissipated. It takes a while to gain it back in 2010 instead of finishing the road the Park service settlement Swain County for $52 million, money that would support area schools and local program but seven years later, less the fourth of has been paid Park service as Congress needs to put the money in the budget which hasn't done Congressman Meadows points with Government accountability office study the Park service could actually pay the entire amount due the frustration of the bureaucracy on why the people of Swain County can't get the money that there is is just mind-boggling that frustration has led Swain County to sue the federal government. The remaining $39.2 million all feels like another broken promise. CBS News was there back in 1978 residents of no gain permission series of one-day when to make things right.
