Learn more@edwardjones.com hi, I'm Jane Pauley and this is our Sunday morning podcast featuring a memorable story from our most recent show in conversation that offers insights beyond the broadcast on this episode to Hollywood heavyweights at top speed, Christian Bale and Matt Damon have teamed up for the much talked about new film Ford versus Ferrari is based on the real life drama that played out back in the 1960s, when the Ford Motor Company set out to be the fastest and you could say sexiest car company in the world for already at the storied 24 hours of Le Mans Rd. race Tracy Smith sat down with the accomplished pair to talk about racing movies what it was like to work together for the first time. So this is the first time you work together. What is you I know your paths crossed over the years, but what you think about each other for this all you think about my mother. She been virtual course impose very close. You have the same agent for decades. I wish I know you think I'm making this up. I am very grateful to Matt because I wouldn't have a career if it wasn't for Rosie Postel Rose were I was told I will Matt doesn't want to do it so they went about bio and then Michael so thank you for what you have little Russell one of your hard was this something we thought. Oh, I'd like to work with that guy things you workout yeah you stay in character on sense you know that's a weird thing to say like there are certain things that you want to maintain throughout. Just because we play dress up right but at the same time like you want to make something that's really worth watching and I just find that the more into it you get the more with what seems to be to get the giggles will follow somebody to well I know how much they know a matching know how much their activities well. I suspect pilaf of wasted money rolls of film through the most one-story start I want to know start. It's just I started I showed you go to get into it and there's a satisfaction in getting to be really loopy in this business we get to go to these extreme when most people would say they should be committed to an asylum, but rather we get paid for instead.

But in doing so don't step on anyone else's toes allow room for everyone else to work its goal be you know a mutual feeling of the Corporation that leads to a better product. I think competition with each other cost time that people start that one off each other's school be in the best interest yeah that's about all boats rise with the time you want to support other people's work in an and create space for everybody to do their best work. Having said that, you know, we would have conversations because as you know we know his wife over 20 years. It's like I I we could talk onset about real life like that. He wouldn't say like I'm not Christian, but not crazy. Time will come. You have to understand what action means you have to understand that you get picked up home or whatever and take him to work so you know you you're not fully immersed, you can. I know you can actually be that because otherwise you wouldn't do a scene twice going you wish to the directive because why would there be a direct and automated. It's impossible to do so. It's a nice kind of the thing that people imagine. But my gold would love it if I could just ask if I could just become a salesman buying total maximum correction or do that and become a card tossing some people are able to do my nose like that young age to help through working with her on Mr. so much because I turn it on like that. It was incredible and I was to end. I it's just I why I couldn't do it. Couldn't do it but I was incredibly jealous so it's I think you both have a similar thing where you kind of ease yourself into it and then stay and it's likely can't all be moved to you gradually doesn't know is dying. That's one thing that the almost what did you learn from each other in this process. I had a great time watching and I eat he's got an incredible monk like discipline, like when he had to lose EE one from Dick Cheney to this guy so he had to lose 70 pounds, 70 pounds to get in the call right in their life lost away only your everything in the sky around the targeted transformation yeah I keep so are you yeah now you know when you're onset and he's like oh hold on is my cardiologist.

Think about it at our age again. I mean, that's all that's a lot of weight in the night I went up some of the first segment, what, how did you do it because I was interested know not to that extent, but I gone up and down and what I said with what was it expecting it was a mixture of fasting. The keynote didn't eat on a lighter note, I want to talk about that fight scene it's a little different kind of fight scene from what you two are used, to yes the pretty goofy it's pretty goofy yeah I was a lot more fun to shoot but most of us fight scenes which we have to take really seriously gotta learn choreography for weeks and you're supposed to look really tough and lethal. This was really the opposite week. We had some really great stump menaced on coordinators on this we going to that rehearsal room which both of us have spent weeks in these mats and you know slamming on everyone stretching there. Then you got a lot to Michigan and then we were out there about 20 minutes flat. We went in there they went with the list. On the other. We went love it.

I said you guys will run it. We went not sure what they would like to punch the stock is a lot you got it set up on the day do it but it was also the conflict where we could provide stuff just enough push this bit little further adapt on the day to it. You know, try not to law for doing it. Hard laugh look completely incapable of the two friends who really just hate each other and that second never want to really know so it was great. From that point of view, it was hard not to loss. Yes we did, we ruined a couple things you remember couple laughing in between takes were looking at the playback lifetimes of fight scenes you want to go over and look at the monitor and see okay will I miss this punch I missed that I write up about one brevet this when we go over it were just an end and and gentle topping want one of our producers known for 30 years since my friend I heard her kind of mumble thinking like a during what were watching Christian Arab look at the monitor here behind Jason Bourne gets that this is where we are. Take out with teacher Gary this week Stephen Landau live Mitch McConnell in one of Washington's biggest midterm monument list for me the two Senate races you think Republicans have the best chance of taking a democratic seed with Nevada not Georgia.

Georgia is right up there, but New Hampshire's surprise New Hampshire people really just kind of don't like that you have for more from this week's conversation, follow the take out with Maj. Garrett on Apple podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts
