Good evening again to you from beacon Baptist Church were breaking from tradition tonight. This is our 47th anniversary as a church going back to the beginning of 1973 in we've always celebrated homecoming on the third Sunday in May and here we are in tradition has been that we do not have a Sunday night service. The only time in the in the whole calendar year that we deliberately cancel the service and the reason for that is that the celebration in the festivities in the morning carried deep into the afternoon. We want people to linger and enjoy the time of fellowship. It's planned afterwords and therefore we would cancel the service but not following tradition. There is nothing these last couple months prevent traditional so we've planned a worship service. Another preaching time someone is asked me if I'm getting use to preaching to an empty auditorium and I'm I'm really not.

It's it's hard preaching to a faceless audience. Three people in the auditorium tonight. They feel a bit stiff. The there there a target because it looks year but III sure the three of you that I am not just preaching to you on preaching to what I trust his people gathering around their computers as we are conducting these lifestream services and we come together to worship the Lord and most people if you asked them what you associate with warship they would say music singing and that is a part of worship but that's not the entirety warship and I would argue probably not the most important aspect of warship what you listen to what Tim Charlies says about warship.

He is the pastor of Grace Fellowship Church in Toronto, Ontario. He says this what we do when we gather for worship. Will we read the Bible we preach the Bible, pray the Bible sing the Bible and see the Bible.

Our warship is to proceed from the Bible to depend upon the Bible to be soaked in the Bible are desperate need in our great privilege is to know and proclaim God's word.

The purpose of our gatherings is not to entertain people or to meet the ever-changing and ever fickle felt needs of the unsaved, or even the saved. Rather, it's to expose them to the Bible to feed them with the Bible to encourage them with the Bible to equip them with the Bible, then to send them out to a lost and hurting world to proclaim the Bible.

Anything that serves a different purpose, or fails to meet these purposes is less than God expects and less than God deserves you conclude by saying warship. It turns out, is serious business. I thought that was a good reminder tonight even though were not here singing praises to the Lord were looking to the word of God. Listen to Psalm 40 70, clap your hands all you peoples shout to God with the voice of triumph for the Lord most high is awesome. He is a great King over all the earth.

He will subdue the peoples under us and the nations under our feet. He will choose our inheritance for us the excellence of Jacob home. He loves God has gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet, saying praises to God, sing praises sing praises to our King, sing praises for God is the King of all the earth, sing praises with understanding. God reigns over the nations. God sits on his holy throne. The princes of the people have gathered together, the people of the God of Abraham.

For the shields of the earth belong to God. He is greatly exalted. The troubles of sale and dangers of fright, though. Friends should all fail in foes all unite yet one thing secures us, whatever be tied.

The Scripture assures us, the Lord will provide the birds without barn or storehouse are fed from them. Let us learn to trust for our bread his saints what is fitting shall never be denied. So long as it is written, the Lord will provide no strength of our own or goodness. We claim yet since we have known the Savior's great name in this our strong tower for safety.

We hide Almighty. His power, the Lord will provide. God has been faithful to meet our needs to provide for us in these days and I trust that you are rejoicing in that reality, we are encouraged by the prospect that soon will be able to begin together again in worship three elders will be gathering tomorrow afternoon to discuss our plan moving forward with the lifting of some restrictions will be communicating to you what we deem is the best way forward. So stay tuned to that. Thank you for your patience in these days. Thank you for your praying for your faithfulness and giving. We are encouraged by your interest in the word of God in a moment I'm going to pray, but was sitting in my chair earlier today and my phone came in a message from the Wall Street Journal unsolicited.

I get these pop up this one peaked my interest in the title of it was something about the phenomenon of the increase of prayer during this season of pandemic. So I read it and affected fairness.

The title the article was the science of prayer by Elizabeth Bernstein and she said a number of things that were helpful. I believe, but in the article there was this that I was just dumbfounded by and wrote it down and I thought how misguided this is about prayer. Sometimes I light a candle and said in front of the mirror, looking myself in the eye. Other times I write a letter to God asking for advice. Suppose that would be an okay discipline as long as your writing to God with an expectation. If you're looking for advice. You're looking to his word were he's given as a revelation, but that's not what she says. Oftentimes I write a letter to God asking for advice and then write myself a response and then in parentheses it says when I do this it comes out in a softer and gentler folks. I'm glad there's more to prayer than that kind of psychological nonsense when talking to ourselves, were not in an echo chamber.

We don't have to stare into a mirror and look ourselves in the eye and pretend that somehow there's divinity in me know. Our God is in the heavens. He tells us that his eyes are upon the righteous and his ears are open under our cry.

We have audience with the God of heaven, so would you join me as we look to him beginning of this worship service. Our father and God.

Tonight we thank you for the Lord Jesus Christ, we thank you for his perfect life and we thank you for his perfect sacrifice that he made for sinners and we thank you that that sacrifice that he offered of himself was accepted by you and is the means whereby we can be reconciled to you that we are no longer enemies of yours that we been made sons and daughters of the most high God, thank you for the peace of God, thank you for access into the very presence of God.

And we rejoice in our privileges tonight and we thank you are God that you are indeed ruling and reigning in the heaven and not only ruling in the heavens, but your ruling and reigning on this earth beneath your working all things after the counsel of your own will and that's mysterious to us how great a God, you are how beyond our comprehension. You are as we think about all the ages of human history that you are superintending every decision, every action the wills of men. All of that is under your superintendents and it's all accomplishing that which you have decreed in eternity past, we can even plan today accurately for what will come tomorrow in fact were warned not to do that, but the say is the Lord wills will do this and that tomorrow but before the foundations of the earth were laid, you determined what would transpire in human history.

What an amazing God, you are therefore we worship you tonight. We exalt you.

We look to you and you militate in with up to you and believing faith. We thank you that you have not only revealed yourself to us in creation.

You have revealed yourself through special revelation.

We thank you for the word of God. The infallible, inspired, authoritative, all sufficient word of God. We pray that you would buy your spirit illuminate our minds that we might understand the scriptures tonight. We take our rightful place. Our daughter God before you. We submit to you.

We humble ourselves before or you we we look to you to instruct us in righteousness to correct us to rebuke us if we need rebuked.

We thank you that your word is sharp and powerful, and it's able to divide Solon spirit and to reach into the deepest recesses of the human heart and mind. Submit Lord our minds to you and we submit our emotions to you and we submit our wills to you and we ask that you help us tonight to to love you commanded us to love you with all of our heart, mind, soul and strength. And in these minutes that we've gathered together tonight around your word.

Help us to make a conscious choice that we are going to gird up the loins of our minds and we are going to love the Lord our God with our mind by giving attention to it in dispelling distractions and asking even as we listen for a heart of faith to believe and to receive and to respond in an appropriate fashion. Lord, thank you that you are indeed Jehovah Gyro the God who provides. Thank you for providing for all of our needs. You provided for greatest need for our souls. Salvation and if use provided that in your son, we have every reason to believe and have every reason to have confidence that whatever else we have need of in this life will provided for mindful tonight of store water in Johannesburg, South Africa. He is in a precarious situation. His health is failing. He has cancer in his liver. He is anticipating a suitable donor and if so a liver transplant. We commit them to you and ask that you would encourage him and sustain him and provide Lord for him and provide for Laverne and she's there. The borders are close to Zimbabwe. She can't return their she can visit stored in the hospital a new situation for her and her busy life helper to be still and know that you are God and Lord, may we be the same this evening to rest before you and to quiet our hearts before you into be enabled by your spirit to receive the word of God with profit tonight. Here us. We pray for Jesus sake and his glory alone. Amen.

Would like you to turn with me to Luke chapter 15 Luke chapter 15 we are considering what is been coined the lost and found chapter of the New Testament because there are three things comprised in this chapter that are lost, there is a lost sheep. It is found there is a lost coin that is found in then there is a lost son who is found in our consideration tonight involves that lost son. Let's begin to read chapter 15 of Luke verse 11. Then he that is, Jesus said, a certain man had two sons in the younger of them said to his father. Father give me the portion of goods that falls to me, so he divided to them. His livelihood and not many days after the younger son gathered all together journey to a far country, and their wasted his possessions with product living but when he had spent all, there arose a severe famine in the land and he began to be in want. Then he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country and he sent him into his fields to swine and he would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods that the swine eight and no one gave him anything. But when he came to himself. He said how many of my father's hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger. I will arise and go to my father and will say to him.

Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants and heroes came to his father but when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him, and the son said to him.

Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son.

But the father said to his servants, bring out the best robe and put it on him and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet and bring the fatted calf here and kill it and let us eat and be merry for this my son was dead and is alive again.

He was lost and is found.

They began to be married now, his older son was in the field and as he came and drew near to the house. He heard music and dancing. So we called one of the servants and ask what these things meant and he said to him, your brother has come, and because he has received him safe and sound. Your father has killed the fatted calf, but he was angry and would not go in there for his father came out and pleaded with him so he answered and said, was father low. These many years I've been serving you. I never transgressed your commandment at any time, and yet you never gave me a young goat that I might make merry with my friends. But as soon as this son of yours came you kill the fatted calf for him and he said to him, son, you are always with me and all that I have is yours. It was right that we should make merry, and be glad, for your brother was dead and alive again and was lost and is found. Tonight, our consideration is not for the second half of the parable will only backup this chapter contains one parable and are three parts to this one parable three stories that make up one parable when I got to consider the eldest son and his part in this story were going to concentrate tonight on the younger son and again. This chapter consists of a lost sheep a lost coin, and a lost son were in a series on the parables were looking at a series of parables category parables that are parables of salvation. The deal primarily with that subject and this parable that Jesus gives here in Luke 15 is spoken in response to the attack. The self-righteous religious leaders of the day made on Jesus's ministry, Jesus was ministering to societies, outcasts, the tax collectors whom everyone hated and then unknot another category known as sinners somewhat.

Do we know about this group. While that term sinners was meant to define those who did not know the law or observe the legal niceties of pharisaic religion that Sue was classified in that category. The tax collectors and sinners and Jesus did not despise them. In fact, he loved them and their response to Jesus was likewise they loved him. They drew near to him. They wanted to be near him. They wanted to hear him preach and teach in this enraged the Pharisees and the scribes speaking in derision toward Jesus. They said he's a friend of sinners. Yes indeed he is. Are we thankful tonight for that Jesus is a friend of sinners. These religious leaders should have been as well but they were not. They were more concerned about their self-righteousness and their perceived standing before God that they had no time around.

What a tragedy but the story again let let me point out something to you.

My Bible has under the heading verse 11.

The parable of the lost son. Verse eight, the parable of the lost coin and be beginning at verse one. The parable of the lost sheep which seems to indicate that here are three separate parables, but as I pointed out to you. I believe last Sunday night. Verse one says that all the tax collectors and the sinners drew near to him to hear him and the Pharisees and scribes complain saying this man receives sinners and eats with them, so he spoke what this parable singular to them, not parables, but parable to them, saying, and you see the flow of what he had to say there is no break.

There is one parable, but there are three stories that make up this one parable. So were looking at this story. Verse 11 then he said, a certain man had two sons. We don't want to lose sight of that most considerations most sermons most treatments of this section focus almost exclusively on the prodigal son, the younger son who left the father's home and squandered all of his inheritance, but there's two sons and I would argue that despite the fact that Jesus said twice as much about the younger son that he did the elder son that primarily this parable was spoken.

This story was spoken by Jesus for the purpose of the religious leaders. They were depicted by the elder son. This is their response. The younger son is depicted by the tax collectors and the sinners, a certain man had two sons in the younger of them said to his father.

You know the story are familiar with the story and this son leaves the confines of his home and the authority was father and goes out into the far country, and squanders and weighs and lives up his life, only to come to his senses and return want to show you tonight. The steps away from the father's house. This look at that this younger son took deliberate steps away from the father's house into the far country notice with me in verse 12 is the man, the younger son said to his father. Father give me the portion of goods that falls to me, he demanded a share of the inheritance. This was an insult to the father inheritance were to be dispersed at the death of a father.

Father was living he was saying, in essence, I wish you were dead. I want my inheritance now was an insult. It was disrespectful and it was rebellion.

He was sick and tired of living under the father's authority and I was compounded by the fact that he worked for the father's desire for independence drove him here was his demand. Give me the portion of goods that falls to me, the story says. So he divided to them. His livelihood notice.

Not only his demand.

Notice his departure.

Verse 13 and not many days after he got his inheritance.

Somehow he got it to where it was spendable. He had it in his pocket as we would say it was burning a hole in his pocket. Not many days after the younger son gathered all together and journey to a far country is departure. He couldn't get away from his father's home in authority fast enough notice number three is depravity is depravity.

The latter half of verse 13 he journeyed to the far country. Any and there in the far country wasted his possessions with prodigal living with wasteful living with sinful living with reckless living.

He indulged himself. He was drunk on selfish, lustful, sinful living. In fact that's what the elder son said to his father in his dissatisfaction with the celebration. It was going on as soon as this son of yours. Verse 30 who had just devoured your livelihood with harlots, he devoured select somebody who just is consumed with lust and appetite. He devoured the picture of depravity.

So not only his demand and his departure in his depravity. Notice his desperation. Verse 14 but when he had spent all burn through all the money all his resources when he had spent all, there arose a severe famine in that land, and he began to be in want. Then he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.

The most loathsome things he could've done hired himself off working for a pig farmer. That's how absolutely totally desperate. He was in a situation is even worse. So there. He is working for a pig farmer and again there's nothing wrong with being a pig farmer, but in this context, a Jewish young man working for a Gentile man juice had nothing to do with swine.

But this boy was so desperate, he hired himself out working in a pig farm.

Verse 16 and he would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods that the swine eight and no one gave him anything. Oh how far he's fallen arrived at the far country with his pockets full of money and appetite that he could satisfying burn through it all.

And here is starving, desperate and he wanted it says filled his stomach with the pods that the swine eight and no one gave him anything. Think about this area is in desperation, we don't know how long it took for him to get to this place after he arrived in the far country. But one thing we do know what he thought would be a life of freedom and joy and happiness soon became a life of desperate need.

The basement and bondage. He was not driving. He was nigh on the perishing fact that's what he says in verse 17 when he came to himself. He said how many my father's hired servants have enough bread enough and to spare, and I cherish with hunger is destitution, so his demand is best. It is departure is depravity. His desperation and is destitution and that's what sin does. Sin is not a joyride indulging in sinful appetites in indulging yourself in sin in the world's fair. That's what it leads to emptiness destitution, desperation, and apart from the intervention of God, perishing those of the steps from the father's house to the far country would just as there are steps away from the father's house there are steps pictured here in this prodigal back to the father and what are they with a big word is repentance.

Repentance. Notice first with me his determination in verse 18. I will arise and go to my father. I will arise and go to my father. That's his determination. How do we explain this change of thinking and attitude in this son will. Verse 17 says when he came to himself when he came to himself. He said how many my father's hired servants have bread enough and despair, and I perish with hunger, why it's amazing how clearly he's thinking right now. It's amazing how in touch with reality, he is right now where was that when he had his inheritance in wanted to leave the father's house. Now here's a change.

Here is a story depicting repentance and what is repentance repentance is a turning from sin toward God. It's 180° turn. It's a man going action away from the father's house on a path of destruction. He continues on that path will perish, and determining being arrested and turning and moving hundred 80° in the opposite direction. That's what we see them doing so the first step here in this vivid portrayal of repentance is that he was awakened to his trial condition prior to this he was blind to the was deceived by he could not see know what else could see it were not told, but it would seem logical to me that the father would've played with his son. You sure this is what you want reason with him about how wise this was when all know that Jesus doesn't include that in the story, but in a real-life situation. You've got to believe that there were people who were speaking morning towing.

He would listen, but he is awakened now to his true condition. Notice the second step. Second step is he moves now back to the father's house and honest confession of sin when he came to himself. Verse 17 he said, how many my father's hired servants have bread enough and despair, and I perish with hunger. I will arise and go to my father and will say to him.

Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. Here is an honest confession of sin. Notice word starts. He realizes that the seriousness of sin is not only what it does. The horizontal relationships that sin is first and foremost a transgression against God Almighty I have sin against heaven.

He says, and before you is rehearsing in his mind what is going to say when he gets back into the presence of his father. He's going to give an honest confession of sin no hint here of any well I just did what all teenage boys do. I just sold my wild oats.

I know none of that.

No blaming anyone. He's owning sin and confessing it again is rehearsing what is going to say that he has sinned against heaven and against his father.

What is the third stage or third step in this process, there is number one in awakening of his true condition and honest confession of sin and number three there is the actual return to the father.

I will arise and go to my father will say to him, father, I've sinned against heaven and before you, and I'm no longer worthy to be called son make me like one of your hired servants.

Verse 20 says. And he arose and he came to his father. Now repentance. The one oversimplified but here are three key things that that make up constitute biblical repentance number one in awakening to one's true condition. He was blind to it before deceived by it before sold out to this lifestyle and now he sees the folly of it so the first thing is right-thinking and the right attitude, but there's more to repentance than that there must be right-thinking. There must be the right attitude is, what else and honest confession of sin and again that's critical that's important.

But that's not the end of it as it you cannot right-thinking and you can confess your sin. But if you never go back to the father. You never go to the Lord, you really truly repented. Because what is repentance again. It's a turning away from sin and turning to God so the father in this picture is being depicted as God the father he actually returns to the father I want you to notice what he rehearsed that he was going to say to the father because that's important here in a moment he was going to say he was going to confess that he had sinned against heaven and against his father and in verse 19 he was going to say I'm no longer worthy to be called your son.

Make me like one of your hired servants. That's what he purposed that he was going to rehearse and say verse 20 he rose and came to his father. I want you to see the father's response and again the father here is being depicted as God the father and how he responds to repentant sinners, what you see number one, a loving, merciful, forgiving, embrace I don't know how to convey the ethos of this picture but it's a powerful it's emotionally rich he arose and came to his father, but when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed it suggests that the father had been longing for the sun to return. It suggests that the father believed that the father the son would return. He didn't know and we had given up on the son he was longing. He was looking he saw him from a distance and he subdued the natural instinct of okay, probably out of money probably dusted. No, not a hint of that attitude. He was still a great way off, his father saw him had compassion ran and fell on his neck and kissed loving, merciful, forgiving, I think it's hard for some of God's children to think and entertain God the father being like this that he's that tender ladies that full of compassion that he's that eager to express acceptance, but here it is. Jesus is telling this story to give us a word picture of how God the father receives in response to repentant sinners. The father's response, a loving, merciful, forgiving, embrace number two in verse 20.

A full restoration to son ship when he was still a great way off, his father saw him had compassion on him, ran and fell on his neck and kissed him, and the son said to his father remember what he was rehearsing it was going to say. The sun now says to him, his father father I have sinned against heaven and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son. That's what he rehearsed that he would say, but there was more he was planning to say with the father cutting off the father didn't even give him time to say the rest of what was the rest make me like one of your hired servants. That's the best this prodigal son could hope for. I've I've thrown away any privilege of son ship I I'm not even gonna expect to be restored to that privilege. If I'll just be allowed to be a servant be happy know there is the full restoration. The son ship. The father said was servants bring out the best robe, put it on. He put a ring on his hand was on his feet bring the fatted calf earring cannot and let us eat and be merry with father's response, a loving, merciful, forgiving, embrace number two.

A full restoration of the son ship and number three and over the top joyful celebration and over the top joyful celebration and not only the description of the celebration, but the reason the explanation. The rationale for the celebration. Verse 23.

Bring the fatted calf here and kill it and let is easy to be married first for this my son was dead and is alive again. He was lost and is found in they began to be merry in the very last verse of the chapter response again to the unhappiness of the older son Jesus says in the story it was right that we should make Mary and be glad, for your brother was dead and is alive again and was lost and is found in over the top joyful celebration. And again, what is being portrayed in what is being depicted here. This is the heart of God being described to us in beautiful and vivid language of how he receives repentant sinners. None of this.

None of this. I think we need our understanding corrected. Think with me about a few applications here. Number one. Here is a lesson in hermeneutics.

Here is a lesson in hermeneutics. What I mean by that. Again, here is one parable with three stories that make up this parable. Therefore, each of the three parts must stand together.

They may not only stand together are standalone with stand together. There's no contradiction here you interpret one in light of the others will see that in a moment of why that's critical. Some have made a mistake here in looking at this story about the lost son, and of imagined that here's a picture of God.

Here's a young son, the prodigal son. God is more or less hopeless here in terms of saving this young man. The sun is rebel.

He is squandered his inheritance. He's fallen into bondage in the far country and throughout the story. There is no hint that the father does anything back. He's longing for his son's return, but he does not, as far as the story goes, he does not seek him out and some therefore have supposed that in addition to the past 70 of the father that in the matter of salvation God's hands are tied.

He's helpless he can do anything for this son until the son decides he wants to return the centeredness. Despite the fact that the Bible tells us that he's depraved is unable he's unwilling and is unable son think this story suggests that the center has great powers it's within him, even in his in his in slave state to come to his senses is bondage and return to the father now is that correct again three stories making up one parable of the lost sheep a lost coin, and a lost son. What is it say about the lost. She verse seven Jesus tells the story in and gives this word of commentary, I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over 99 just persons who need no repentance. The lost coin, Jesus tells the story offers one word of commentary, verse 10. Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents now the step back and think about the story and what is said about this son. The father says this son was what he was dead.

He was dead. Verse 24 and is alive again.

He was what lost and found, and they began to be married women we know he was lost, but who found him. How was he found he didn't find himself. He was lost and was found the same thing is said in verse 32. It was right that we should make Mary and be glad, for your brother was dead and is alive again and was lost and is found but is being stressed here in this story of the younger son is the man's side of salvation conversion is man's response its faith and repentance. Now the first two stories she sinners are like and under sheep and sinners repent, but coins lost coin, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents a Jesus is talking about repentance in relationship to a lost sheep, and in relationship to a lost coin, and he's talking about repentance in relationship to a lost son. There's joy you see the sun was dead. He was, for all practical purposes, dead, and when we say that God finds an individual what we mean by that we mean the by the miracle of regeneration. The center comes to his senses the repents of his sin and he one begins to see God when we say a sinner comes to his senses we mean that God has first saw him, and brought about a spiritual resurrection. We sing about that. I sought the Lord and afterword, I knew he moved my soul to seek him seeking me. It was not. I that found O Savior true no, I was found of the thou didst reach forth thy hand in mine and fold.

I walked and sank not on the storm. Vecsey was not so much that I am on the to a cold as thou old Lord on I find I walk I love, but over the whole of love is but my answer, Lord, to the four thou worked long before hand with my soul always. Thou love this me that's that's what's going on here. There is the seeking and the saving of sheep and of a coin and of a lost son application number two lesson on the necessity of repentance. The absolute necessity of repentance.

No one will ever get to heaven who does not repent of their sins. We are commanded to repent and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. There are people who are enslaved by their sin in love with their sin entangled with their sin, and apart from the work of God freeing them from that they will forever perish.

Here's a picture of repentance.

Everyone must repent. You see the inconsistency to say you can go to heaven and not repent.

What is repentance repentance is going away from God. So how is it possible for you to pursue your sin away from God and somehow end up in heaven with God.

It's inconsistent. If you're going to end up in the father's house you're going after repent of your sin and if you don't you will forever perish the necessity repentance and then a lesson on the Trinitarian involvement and so to rheology roaming by that will, who is depicted who is pictured in the seeking Shepherd in the first story of the parable.

What's the Lord Jesus Christ be as the great Shepherd of the sheep, God the son, who's been depicted in this story who is the father. What's God the father you say will where's the Holy Spirit is a little more less obvious let's say that but the Holy Spirit is depicted in the woman who sweeps the floor, turns the light on the illumination in order to find is the spirit of God. It's all in operation in this son's life who brings him to spiritual awakening, and that's necessary for any sinner who comes to Christ. But let's not miss this.
