Humanity has been shaped by moments in which one person approached the crowd something important to say I'm John Meacham and this is it was said. Season to the creation and production of C-13 originals cadence 13 studio in association the history Channel, it was said.

Season to and subscribe for free. Odyssey Avenue casts is something really absurd that Steve's you about getting a paper cut my eyeball. I fear you can't shake the leak, ocular fluid, my cheeks. It's going on right now that our parish scares you. I will talk about joy meet Larry Mullins on my new podcast years listen and subscribe to your weirdest beers on the audit the app or wherever you get your podcast from talking about one game, one element, there's a lot to unpack for Monday night football and we will get back to it. No joke.

I got dozens of cuts meeting audio clips specifically from that one game, but the Monday following up on Sunday and the Monday right before the divisional round start in the baseball playoffs. It is a lot that we need to get you in the following two hours were asking for your input in multiple ways on our social media so find us on Twitter after our CBS or on our Facebook page or our YouTube channel know some of you are checking out last week we shared our conversation with former pro soccer goalie Jesse Bradley let such a crazy story tragedy that ended his career, but then a new purpose in a new direction is life so lots of you were listening to that conversation last week and over the weekend, which we appreciate and so there's a lot of different ways you can connect with us right now that were asking you if you were on the NFL competition committee. How would you define roughing the passer and I'm being serious and I get it.

You can be snarky, I get you can come up with all kinds of sarcastic lines and you know sarcasm is my love language so I appreciate that, but actually being serious because I in no way convinced that these official are not reacting to what we see with two which is not fair it's not fair that other diva in the play should have to pay for what happened with two and I probably believe that the NFL is made this quietly, a point of emphasis that generally when the NFL issues, internal memos, they get leaked like practice tape from the warriors, usually internal memos from Roger Caddell do not stay internal and watch it over again. Even now Chris Jones has the ball in his hands and runs away difficult roughing about unbelievable catalyst, though I wouldn't be surprised if the NFL made it a point of emphasis on the videos they give to each of the officiating crews. That's what happens they have videos for the screws to watch. They have plays either ones that they think recall correctly, or once they flagged because they were incorrect. They gave everything will official a grade a weekly grade on every single play. The gate everything a snap of the game. These guys are there not only graded but criticized extensively.

They do have a chance to respond. If they feel like they've been evaluated incorrectly or unfairly, they can Ms. respond they can appeal to the NFL, but there graded very strictly and generally they are right as a whole and this is a couple years ago but I'm I'm sure the numbers haven't dropped that much if they dropped it all as a whole. NFL officials grade grade correctly 95% of the time it's just the one that they don't are the ones that we focus on Angie's territory made a real good point on Westwood one when he hopped on the money I football post game show. There were some technical now we have so many angles of every single play. And so there's a tendency of course welcome to twitter welcome to Facebook. There's a tendency to fixate and to criticize and to use hyperbole. A good number of times that I saw people call the Grady Jarrett roughing the passer call the worse that everything in NFL history personal. You can't remember all the calls you soon about history. Second of all, I feel it happens all the time actually does that listener find me on Twitter and say hey. There is also a terrible gall and the ravens game recently done at least once a game where they get it wrong they're not perfect. I just will come back to the fact that one call doesn't change the game. You can say that a book about the Grady Jarrett and try to make a case for it, but why were the Falcons down 21 nothing that does nothing.

They did on demand, serve nothing.

They did earlier in the game offensively. No turnovers of the night that they do the game. The calling back to the game more than anything else they did for the first three nap quarters now.

That's why coaches the best coaches tell their players and I heard it over and over when I was playing you do not blame the rest you adjust to them they don't adjust to you. Number one, number two, they while they came back to the game. You have so many other ways impact again yourself you in far greater impact as a player on again and official does may not seem like that again because we fixate on one or two calls there's no guarantee the falcon score. If they get the ball back from Tom Brady and the Buccaneers. There maybe they do, maybe they don't. But there's no guarantee you just assume the Falcons a lot of opportunities that they did not capitalize on before that game went out of the wire. They waited too late for their comeback, but in the case of roughing the passer and kind of working that into the to a conversation I do think there are some officials who were overcompensating and I wasn't at the game between the Dolphins of the jet so I can't speak to this personally, but from what I saw, and from the videos have been posted by people who were at the game like their personal videos even with the dolphins inside that we just had last week was that it was John – Mozer, Josh Mozer, we just had a dolphins insider with us last week and he actually shared a video and then said not only did I take this video of Teddy Bridgewater walking out the field. Well he was in the hot on them that the spotter really down and said we were taking them off the field he has to go to concussion protocol. The independent spotter is the one who said Bridgewater's wobbly and so Josh went to all the tape like all the tape from the moment that Teddy Bridgewater got knocked to the ground that played it was a safety and said that he never once and others located to never once saw Bridgewater wobbly and according to Mike McDaniel, nobody's trying to send a subliminal message here read between the lines, but I do know that at this point it seems like it's overkill with Teddy Teddy Hewitt had no symptoms today. No symptoms yesterday, but per the rule change. She's been treated as though he has acute concussion and so he's in the subsequent quote critical habitat.

Maybe there's a chance symptoms show up. Three.

Four days later but the reason that he's being treated like he has a concussion even though he is no symptoms what is freaking coded no symptoms whatsoever, but you have COBIT so you have to be isolated for 10 days and how many times were athletes so upset about that last year, but this I know a head injury is serious. But if a guy doesn't have a head injury. How long do you keep in concussion protocol before you believe that he does not injury and according to the NFL. The LPA investigation. Neither the independent doctors nor the spotters nor the dolphins did anything wrong when it came to that initial hate onto the bills right where Matt Alano pushed him down. He seemed to hit his head on the grass behind him and he was wobbly and he member he told the officials. It was his back. That's what was making him wobbly was in pain is back kinda was given him trouble as he tried to stand up to what they change about the rule is that if there is a sign of wobbly answer unsteadiness if it is immediately a red like a no go. From that point on.

It doesn't matter if you test clear you are in concussion protocol, even though at the time to past all his concussion protocols. They allowed to go back on the field, but according to the new rules and the new protocols you see a player like that, whether it's an independent spotter or someone on the sidelines, you're automatically out to now fast-forward to Teddy Bridgewater. I will do the videos but not as much as people have who were at the game or who follow these follow this team the dolphins. So far I can't find anyone who said that they saw him wobble and he was stunned when he got pulled off the field he was in the huddle and try to get his players together, get ready to move on to the while they did have a safety so they were kind of reconvening. He was trying to get get them together and get them organized like a quarterback is supposed to do.

Figure out what the heck to do next. And all of a sudden you could see the look of surprise on his faith pulled off the field and every output off the field. They made him go to the locker room and even though he has no concussion symptoms as you hear Mike Daniels that he's being treated like he has a concussion may talk about 180° the other direction and I feel like it's the same thing with these roughing the passer called because you will not hurt because of the way he was, rolled onto the ground well ruled was more like the Tom Brady hit with with gray Gerrit the chili was rough but it it was it something we've never seen before. It's not like the defensive player never got what his name was thought defensive player was slamming him to the ground. The way he wrapped them up and kinda dragged him down but I swear it triggered the officials in the Atlanta Tampa Bay game because it looked similar to what happened with Tom Brady. Even though he never hit his head on the turf and so we know the NFL is reactionary. We know the NFL pays attention to the criticism they do not NFL officials. The Commissioner Roger Goodell. They do not like being criticized. We think about the number of times they've amended their policies because of an uproar or a firestorm in the public on social media together member what happened a couple years ago. At the end of the entity championship game in New Orleans. The pass interference call the flag that wasn't thrown at him and I'm not saying that's why they lost the game. The saints actually even though there should've been a flag there.

McElroy will be Coleman should have the flag that they got the ball first and over time, so let's just remind everyone of that that's not why they lost the NFC championship by the NFL had been so thrilled with the 2019 to the 19th.

Even the development so thrilled with how the season had gone in the back of the ratings had rebounded that when that happened, any uproar, the criticism, the firestorm the outrage was so loud and so vociferous they overreacted. Remember they made pass interference reviewable for all of the year in in an overreaction to that one call wasn't that one. There was also one of the with the easy to be noted always that particular call the AFC championship was the member is the patriots and the Chiefs and Tom Brady threw an interception but my gosh was a D Ford before got called offsides. When we run into the IPO was so upset that one pass interference that wasn't flagged got all the attention from what they believed was a bounce back season that they overreacted and overcorrected like when you're driving along, let's say, and I hope you don't do this, that you're looking at her phone or your fiddling with the radio or you're not paying attention you're talking to someone who knows what you're doing but the road bends or you're just not paying attention and you cut a swerve little bit off the road or out your lane and what you do, you jerk your car back the other direction. That's of the NFL's been doing for years.

They do with the domestic violence policies that were woefully unsatisfactory. So that's what the NFL is doing now and it's frustrating if you're Teddy brick Teddy Bridgewater right how long you keep me correctly, the rule is, I don't know that the new concussion protocols dealt with how long, but how long believed to be negotiable.

Call when he doesn't have a concussion or lease at this point he's not showing any signs of a concussion infuriating out be someone refusing to allow me to, I don't know what I know I'm not to do it.

I'm not to be sarcastic just eat.

I would be infuriating and frustrated as all get out if that was me I don't have a concussion I'm not testing results of now are just making up the science but there were actually not trusting the science and in this like whole system and and and rather protocols.

We set up that indicate he's not suffering from a concussion. Maybe there is a rule about how many days you have to wait until it might show up again. I go back to COBIT. They say that gestation period was like tender uses of oh my gosh, there's so many parallels in my head right now we know what happened without science so before I get myself in more trouble. The idea that the NFL is over correcting.

It's not a new concept with this league, but it's affecting other games that has no business affecting other players that has no business affecting feel terrible for for Teddy Bridgewater. Here's the update don't want to and still thinking about him because clearly he in the second game, specifically against the bangles is just to prove he was the one that tackled him and he that was when as we are all watching his fingers seized up to right now I'm not even really thinking about his timeline. As I said before his wrist trying to get him as healthy as possible, or were pretty much a 12 to 24 hour reoccurring evaluation process. He's doing well. He's here today but she has knots take he's not ready to take the stuff to do some football stuff you so that will be talk to me every 12 to 24 hours talk to me every 12 to 24 hours old man thinking about to of course in in the case of to a clearly there was a head injury until the protocols of change now. So if we see a player who's as wobbly as to what was in that game against the bills will then yes that makes sense, but a little bit like the roughing the passer penalties with Teddy Bridgewater.

There weren't any obvious signs of a wobble but the independent spotter decided he saw one so Teddy was unable to play the rest that game but even now he still being treated like he has a concussion.

Even though he's not yet had one symptom. There's gotta be a happy medium. I understand protecting the players and I do think that's valuable, especially when it comes to head injuries for me roughing the passer absolutely automatically deserves a flag if you hit or impact of quarterback head or neck area. It may not look like it's a violent hit on TV, but these guys are big dudes and they should not be coming near quarterback head or neck. Let's not full around with that but if there is such a thing as over correcting in response to what has been an uproar the last week and 1/2, the NFL's.

Gotta figure this out here because they've kind of the pendulum swung far too much of the opposite direction I coming up first coach of the 2022. Season has been fired. Not a huge surprise that Matt Ruhl lost his job after one and four start but it's not just the record, it's how bad the Panthers have looked also. They lost their quarterback that will theft.

Oh dear, it's after hours with Amy Lawrence CBSSports radio you are listening to the after-hours podcast humanity has been shaped by moments in which one person approached the crowd something important to say I'm John Meacham and this is it was said. Season to the creation and production of C-13 originals cadence 13 studio in association the history Channel, it was said. Season to subscribe for free to see what casts this is something really absurd that Steve's UL paper cut my eyeball three or you can shake a leak ocular fluid.

My cheeks, knowing that our parish scares you. I will talk about joy meet Larry Mullins on my new contest years listen and subscribe to your weirdest beers on the Odyssey or were ever you get your podcast from the second 20 Carolina's after-hours Amy Lawrence from grandpa a picnic by Emmanuel Mosley who actually this totally sucks Tory's ACL on Sunday against the Panthers and is out for the season's from the highest of highs to the lowest of low was that the state for Emmanuel Mosley but he did get the pick six Baker Mayfield and let's be fair. This is not all on Matt Ruhl but math. The expendable piece, at least right now, and we know NFL owners and management, management, management, the new words as a manager that was as a management and it came out. Management you know you know me you know this is what I do. Especially after that if a weekend and so management is not patient in the NFL owners not patient in the NFL and I wanted four start coupled with the slide at the end of last season. David Tepper couldn't take anymore. It's after hours with Amy Lawrence on CBSSports radio rule was asked about his job security. Following Sunday's game. Of course, have not about it.

No doubt he had already been thinking about it maybe worried about it, but the decision to fire him didn't come down until Monday when the owner himself.

David Pat Tepper gave a rare press conference as we know we have different reasons to think that there has been progress some sort. David Tepper admits there has been progress of some sort but were just not getting over the hump. He goes on to explain that getting over the hump is waiting it's waiting it's waiting.

He said that twice winning more this year than you did last year. Well I guess are still a possibility that they could do that but after one and four start he was incompetent. Now maybe he heard them. Maybe he didn't but the fans were chanting fire Matt Ruhl on Sunday.

So this loss of favor to school happen in Charlotte and you remember there one way that they got a couple weeks ago that actually ended a nine-game losing skid something very the midst of a terrible stretch in the fans had lost patient so did the fading impact his timing is usually you make a decision that's probably the first four games this and I have great respect for, but ultimately those that can't be a reason why you make a change to go into a lot of detail, but what he said is there's gotta be progress what he said is there's got to be.

There's gotta be evidence that changes their we gotta get over the hump and that means winning not into the math on this but I read that it's not even been six months since the same owner David Tepper talked about years that it could take to establish a winning culture. Again, reestablishment that the pavers of one of the past they went to a Super Bowl to actually write so they went once with Jake to Loman that once again with cam Newton cam Newton was an MVP that year.

If I remember the Panthers were 15 to 1. I think that's even think they'd had a winning culture in the past 32 missed camp we think is up to these days.

I just don't assume you what I'm sure they're trying to rebuild a winning culture, but Tepper didn't see any signs of that was happening.

So rule out a record of 11 and 27 which includes the start of this year and the problem has been offense. The entire time.

This is a really obscure stat, but I'll share with you anyway just to kind of underscore the point that at times they had defense, but remember, they've also rebuilt their defense of the law to young talent. The Panthers were one in 27 only one one time when their defense came up 17 or more points and that includes the last 25 times in a row they've lost 25 games with the defense 25 games in a row. When the defense gives up at least 70 points. That's a lot of pressure put on your defense, especially in today's NFL where the the playing field is slanted in favor of the offense have to go back and look at X public do pretty quickly. Maybe before the show is over, but the best teams in the NFL. The number of points that they're giving up rights of the looking at it right now the best defense of teams in the NFL. This these are not hard tip to pick out the Niners. The bills the Eagles the Broncos weirdly enough, they're not even allowing 300 yards per game and then if you think about those defense attempts did you they are and how how very often they're giving their offense is a margin for error in a margin of victory, but to ask your team to never give up more than 17 points is a lot so the best teams in the NFL at holding their opponents to the number of points.

Betty points total. I'll give you these numbers Colts 13.8 point Broncos 15 points Steelers 15.4 point the Rams 16 points.

The Bears 17.20 shoot I totally lied all my gosh I swear I was lucky the defense of numbers because again, I'm thinking the Rams when I do that again sorry… Just that is a total mess. But I do this first, there are only six teams in the NFL that are not giving up 17 points per game for the best of the NFL and in the case of the Panthers you're asking them to give up more than 70 points per game to your offense can't even imagine manage that much.

So here are the numbers just because I totally I don't know how the list gets offense. I swear I was in the defense of bills 12.2 points per game. Same as the Niners those your talked to stingy his defense in the NFL. Averaging 12.2 points per game by their opponents cowboys and cowboys had been there 14.4 Broncos 16 or all the averaging 15. How pathetic it was another dead giveaway that Broncos 15. I would like wait a minute. So yeah, the Broncos, all averaging 15 points per game. The Broncos defense is only giving up 60 that's not good enough to win want to be balling that rule out the door.

The Jaguar 16 points per game.

The Buccaneers 16.6 those are the only teams in the NFL that are not giving up 17 points per game meaning again the the pressure on the pavers defense to allow more than two touchdowns in a field all that the meds is also sad of the offense can't carry its own weight and then it comes down on Matt Ruhl. But here's the thing about Matt. He's also got a lot of administrative control.

He's also got a lot of GM control keys very much involved in building a roster which means even more so the buck stops with him and owner David Tepper response to a question about the power that Matt Ruhl had over the roster and it's clear that he's reconsidering that choice. You can write it doesn't work very often. How many times we seen it backfire. Bill Belichick has even had some rocky seasons where his personnel decisions have not worked out though he's one team in the league has I think ultimately still has the power over the roster. Most coaches have input, but ultimately there's a GM that makes the final say. Now the case of the Niners, Kyle Shanahan, I just member the structure couching it as the head coach John Lynch is the GM but Kyle Shanahan is higher on the on the latter. The power structure. Kyle actually has the final say.

But the two of them work together very well and so at this point it's probably collaborative but yet not many coaches have that kind of power Mike Tomlin has a lot input on his roster am certain most coaches do, but yeah, there's a reason why you have GM's bigger quarterback.

I think pictures of bird, by the way, Baker is no longer the printers quarterback. He's out a couple weeks.

I'm not laughing because of that I do not never laugh and visit injuries, but it just was a funny segue he's out a couple weeks of the high ankle sprain. Same thing that Matt Jones has so now there's no Baker there's no Sam Darnall. There's no back corral.

Could you imagine baccarat could've taken over the team like weeks ago similar to the Kenny Pickett situation in Pittsburgh.

This could have been back corral team if he wasn't out with its Liz Frank right that Liz Frank injury at insult to injury, I will take a gander at the first of my life I've ever said that I don't have any idea where that came from what is wrong. All was less than you said will take a gander at dinner, probably sometime I was using gander underlying billed for custom sites at dinner that would take gator over sound like I'm from somewhere in the South. What insulted you specific it's just you know stereotypes okay will do Facebook this is something really absurd that Steve's UL paper cut my eyeball for your you can shake a leak ocular fluid like sheets that will parish scares you. I will talk about joy meet Larry Mullins on my new contest years listen and subscribe to your weirdest beers on the Odyssey or wherever you get your podcast something really absurd that Steve's UL paper cut my eyeball off for your you can shake a leak ocular fluid like sheets that I will parish scares you. I will talk about joy meet Larry Mullins on my new contest years listen and subscribe to your weirdest beers on the Odyssey or wherever you get your podcast from next to get flowery is just me you are listening to the after-hours podcast old to series so as well. Side social racing over and over here in St. Louis to the division series is it's two more days will not read it slowly to third baby charges is now, please.

The first is in time in the Padres and not only capture the moment they have Through the wildcard series and it's on the Los Angeles team. One of the LDS Tuesday night at dodger Stadium's after-hours Lawrence, your appetite. I can remember them in order.

See play-by-play regret is Mariners radio network, Hamilton on guardians radio want to walk off. That was 15 innings of scoreless baseball and I think 421 strikeouts before they got to that point. Crazy families radio and and who is the voice of the Phillies got Frankie, that's right. Thank you pretty today. Got Frankie and then finally in the Phillies winning really that stunning six run rally in the ninth inning of game one file with Karen Nola pitches Jen just member. He was the one was on the mall when they clinch their playoff spot to they were the last team to get in first appearance in 10 years and they're making the most of it just got Frankie on Phillies radio and then finally Padres radio when and Jesse Adler and after hours with Amy Lawrence on CBS sports radio just a taste of what's to come.

As we head into the divisional round will do this in order so no one thinks their team is being selected. The first game is the Phillies at the World Series champion Braves and of course Wright's knickers says hey bring on whoever the opponent is. It's weird that three of these theories are divisional matchup you get to the postseason you go through everybody that made it doesn't. We didn't care who we played you know we have to play and then you know these guys will be ready to go and Amorgos out I ever heard one guy mentioned about who were going to play just about play in and be in here now be in the division series Ranger Suarez against Max free, so get the World Series champions have the opportunity to host and of course the brazen bad time to get the rotation in order so the nose is to determine your who played for run for hundred 62 James it's finally here and another were sort of. There are a lot of scary teams in big bats in this divisional round. But here's the benefit Philadelphia Seattle Cleveland San Diego they been fighting scratching calling just to get in for the last couple of weeks so they've been in playoff mode.

They had that sense of urgency they been living on the Ed edge facing potential limitation, the end of their series, there's their seasons longer than these other teams who make the case that Dodgers I swear they clinch was six weeks ago.

It's after hours with Amy Lawrence on CBS sports radio then it's from the AL West. The Mariners against the Astros for Dusty Baker, who course is secured that job. They are in restoring order and call me in chaos for the Astros he Ashley believes they are the team to beat these guys. I believe there will a love for each other and you know the are together in the more together your video to put what's true, but you could say that same thing about a few of the other clubs as well. Atlanta comes to mind. To be sure the Dodgers and they have fun playing baseball or what Justin Oberlander okay will. There's your ace in the hole forget how much you love spending time together.

How about just invert lender who is back to being his bad ass self and he's got so much experience in the postseason state Logan Gilbert for the Mariners and second baseman Adam Frazier says you got some special qualities ourselves. But I like about this team knows everybody's all in together like the lunch also is so very close to bring the energy advise fighting for one another sport to get the job done a stoic muscle for any one of a dozen euros more than the one mentality in the thick sport so hard for each other. Every time someone box so all is well.

I will route affect us.

What we won a lot of games sure I get you could get that same cement sentiment from other clubhouse is the only non-divisional matchup is the guardians the youngest team in baseball on the road at the New York Yankees to start but the Terry Francona care about the fact that their young. They had a lot of experience in the building up to this point, every single time.

This is the first time the cold divisions are due May June July Dutchess codes are no other fault experience as they go good part of completing all the gold it's a journey. So Gladys is still going and I don't want to see is it such a good group of guys here that I look forward to coming to work with every single day tells rattling the same units is such a special season towel meaning how Quantrill he starting K-1 for the guardians that's often hedges their catcher going against caracole. You may remember the wildcard game against Boston in 2021, he gave up two home runs to walk. He was pulled when they were three runs already crossed the plate he got no outs in the third inning. So does he need some redemption against Cleveland.

I haven't put much thought into legacy. All my focuses this towards preparing to pitch well. Tomorrow, after a restart evaluate what you could could not have done better prepare yourself for the last one for the next one. Rather return the ball really well lately so that Cleveland New York which leaves us with San Diego at LA and Dave Roberts is got his pitching rotation set up initially start game one click start going to remember, will figure out how we navigate three or four weeks for us it was you could essentially flip a coin there both places in our horizon. I just think that you know Julio's been fantastic for us all year, just making that decision to give him the opportunity I will feel good about. Julio is actually in the Cy Young discussion Dominic see that as a full-time starter and how cool for him that he gets the nod ahead of Clayton Kershaw.
