Fruits and Gifts [Part 3]

I wish I could spend a long time talk about this gift because this gift is like the sense of smell is like you is like that and smell right was what happens. We need this gift and let me also tell you about the danger this gift because men of the Lord start showing you some stuff about people is a fine line between then you start to think that you can stand in judgment over his people, or whatever. But note this is just a wonderful, wonderful gift one time many many years ago an elder in this church came to me said I had a dream in which the Lord is a bold elder came to me is that I had a dream in which the Lord came to you and offered you the gift of discernment of spirits and you said no.

He says the Lord never offer that you and you said no.

I said I never said no to the Lord about some gift that he want to give me. I got away from and I said well maybe I have had in my mind that like you know I got enough problems I face enough demons all over the world.

I got enough stuff going on. Is it what I want to see one more manifestation of some evil or something else Carl and I had a wrong assumption. The assumption was if I see that there's a problem that I discern that I gotta do something about it was you had to get enough healing from that bad boundary lifestyle and all of that, it would say all just because you see a need, you gotta do something about it know perhaps what the Lord wants to do is give you more discernment so you won't get tangled up with the wrong person or perhaps in your workplace, you will promote the wrong person or you will partner with the rock you need to have discernment. I man I wish I could talk more about that.

And then there's the listing of the gift of tongues.

This is obviously the one that's because so much controversy especially over the last 50 years. Over the last hundred years really.

Especially in these moves that we call the charismatic revival tongues is something become a big issue in reason it did is because there's one segment of the body of Christ, who said, oh, this is the gift they base it on the fact that a lot of times when people were first empowered by the Holy Spirit in the New Testament there was speaking in tongues but not in every instance was there and there's no doctrine in the New Testament is all you need to have the gift of tongues not yet been filled, the spirit, I know that some of you come along in and that kind of tradition and I know that there is an argument be made for that but here's what I'm I want to say that is it.

When Paul says do all speak in tongues is a rhetorical answer that is no just and lots of people who really want to have this yet because they so want to feel like they're really in and they really have the Holy Spirit, and yet these people have other gifts and have seen God use them powerfully and so II just have to conclude from the Scripture note know God does not elevate one gift. Overall the area so that's been one of the problem.

The problem is that people just think what to our logical minds and our intellect. The idea speak in a unknown language is something that just seems too far out to two weird sick people discount so for either one of those things is been really controversial me just tell you real quick like the New Testament speaks of tongues and really three different ways. In the book of acts. In chapter 2, when the Holy Spirit falls at Pentecost, people are speaking in languages that they did not themselves know but they were known languages and other people from other other cultures and ethnicities and nations heard their own language being spoken by someone who didn't know their language and it was a miracle that was powerful.

The second thing that can happen is someone can have a prophetic utterance can have a word of encouragement. A word from the Lord that is spoken for an unknown language is not any known language is just a spiritual language but if it's in a corporate gathering it's happening and what group of people.

That is because God is using it like you would use a prophecy is either the one who gives it or somebody else in that room. If it's a real word bill they'll be receiving, not like a translation like a word for translation, but they'll be receiving in their heart. This is what God saying through this and they'll share that sounds like a prophetic word of encouragement with the other and this is what is so often I talked about when Paul talks about you when I pray in the Spirit are praying in tongues rather sit is for my own edification. This is your own unique way that God gives you to pray in us, Micah spiritual language or prayer language is an eminent form of communication with God.

When the spirit helps you pray I've taught on this subject before about what it means to pray in the spirit and praying in tongues is not the only way praying in the spirit so when Paul says all of us to pray in the spirit. He also means if you're praying the scripture you're praying in the spirit because the spirit has infused and breathe himself into the Scriptures so that spirit praying right. If you're praying with the help of the Holy Spirit because you got a gift of mercy and compassion Holy Spirit flowing through you. You're praying in the spirit so so so so much more can be said about that. There's a handout there are community groups about talk more about that. I know that that's just unbelievably too quick and too expensive and too general, but I just wanted to do that because I want you to know that today and if someone is listening by podcasts or radio you should earnestly desire that the Lord fan these gifts into your in the flame in your life or you may hear one of his guess I just listed.

I really would love to move in that gift and and you asked the Lord for it and maybe you think I think maybe I have that gift that I never even knew that was a gift.

It's only people I met over this. They'll just say some like and you know that was a gift and is like this is the gift of the Holy Spirit to use the supernatural using you as an incredibly exciting thing to be used supernaturally by God himself. Well, let me think if you can observation about the gifts of the Spirit for target through the spirit just a moment in the first is that I would just want to make this point I have no time today to do a defense of why I believe the Scriptures make it clear that the gifts continue today. I know maybe some people listening right now you you've been taught that the gifts of C's are you taught that certain gifts continue in certain gifts of C's, but I just want to say this this whole discussion. I hope you can really see this. I just read from three chapters in first grade at 12 1314 and Romans 12 and I am just want to be aware this is not some tangential conversation that sort of nonessential there always anemia, like politics or some shooting talk about it because this just gets division of the body of Christ. Are you kidding me what talk about the supernatural equipment of the body of Christ to do the things that Jesus did. This is absolutely important as a wherever you are on this. I just gonna challenge you to say that if you if you're a boy, so I've always believed the gifts ceased investigate this further.

Maybe you'll be like me where at one point my life I started hearing about these kind of supernatural things are happening.

I said if any of that is true I'm missing something big in my spiritual life and God wants to invite you into it there no inferior and superior Christians. There are no ends and outs you all been baptized into one body into the Lord Jesus Christ and you all have a spiritual inheritance with him in clashes says you have been qualified for your inheritance, and the site there's no second class citizen in the kingdom of God.

These gifts are for you and we need them coming out to you.

I would be totally biblical about this.

My experience is that people need help, God loves people. He wants to help people. The mission of the church is at stake also known as point out. It is the Spirit himself. The spirit of God is not separated from the gift of God, so to say that he gives you a gift. He's given you himself is given him his self to you to work through you also want to make that out make this point I'm just gonna go really fast listen fast the word for gift. My favorite word in the New Testament is Congress, which is the word grace is what happened. Bible teacher who brave scholar call Coke is one who showed me this in a diagram God.

If you imagine the top of this little triangle gives grace that's carless it comes to me. Then when I share the grace that God is given to me through a gift.

The word in the New Testament for that gift a spiritual gift is a Congress. So charisma is a form of cowardice.

I share the gift with you and your life is touched by God and what you did you give thanks back to God and the word for thanks as you Congress yeah Congress is in the middle of Thanksgiving. God gives Congress share the charisma and we give you Congress yeah got. He gives grace, we share the gift we give thanks to God gives grace, we share the gift we give thanks to God. He gives grace, we share the gift we give thanks to God's beautiful so is every Christian charismatic well does every Christian have grace yes is every Christian of cowardice yes is every Christian have charisma, yes, if you're certainly given sovereignly by God.

But we can and should Paul says in first Corinthians 14 verse one earnestly desire the gifts so on the one hand, it's a beautiful thing to say seek the giver, not the gifts because what that's trying to say is you don't need it.

What what were looking for is we don't need fancy manifestations in a life with God is not really accurate to say don't seek the gifts that he wants us to earnestly desire gifts are today is a gift in your life you're reluctant to have it. I asked God for it will pray for you today is a gift in your life.

Also it means that you can have it stirred into flame. Paul said this to Timothy to fan into flame the gift that was given you the laying on of hands. What is that mean you have a gift.

Now it can grow. It also means that because Paul says in Romans 12 we have different grace and using the proportion our faith that we have people have the same gift but is used at different levels. That's fine with God to write through the spirit Lovejoy peace patients, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Love is at the head. These lover altogether. The package and the key about understanding fruit of the spirit is it. There's a reason that Paul says this is fruit because fruit is a product or a melancholy byproduct of a root that grew into a trio plant Bush and that route grew from a seed seed is planted, a root springs up a plant grows into his maturity and it bears fruit see a root and then the fruit relative story this week that there is a boy who lived in a two-story house. He loved that tree in one day he heard his dad say to his mother. Now that tree is over there too close to the house beside it. Then, bear any fruit at all their many fruit on a tree at all and will cut it down so the boy with the bank went down to the grocery store and bought a bunch of apples. They came back and he snuck out there in a testable string any time at all these apples onto the tree next morning parents course knew what happen. The mother said they knew the child was listening.

Mother said the father said, isn't that amazing overnight those beautiful red apples all sprung out on that tree and the dad said yeah and what's even more amazing is it's a pear tree. One thing for sure brothers and sisters you'll never get pairs from Appleseed. Will you. This is why Paul says do not be deceived. Listen to this. Do not be deceived. Whatever you sow you reap is unlike some mysterious truth or some big warning is just an obvious plain fact of life. One apples plan Appleseed's one oranges orange seeds it will produce a root and that'll end up producing fruit. So Paul says with regard to the fruit of the spirit is as the fruit but is not fruit in the sense that you just lie around and hope that all men have Lovejoy peace patients times in my life.

He said so into this so into the things of the spirit.

You can so into the flesh. The NIV translated the sinful nature or you can so into the spirit every thought that you have every activity of your life.

Every word that you speak every conversation that you have everything that you watch everything that you read everything that you listen to everything that you fix your mind on every bit of it in one way or another is sewing is a beautiful thing. It's a wonderful thing that God is made all of us farmers of Tazewell and the supernatural glorious wonderful truth. You could ever discover in your life is sowing and reaping, and what Paul is saying here is that there is a fruit of the Holy Spirit.

That is the love and joy and peace in patients but the way that you get.

There is not by saying I'm going to become a more patient person today. He said you don't get there by the law is it if you just try to fix yourself a law you're just going be living by the flesh, and you can wind up with the works of the flesh, but what he saying is there's a fruit if you so into the things of the spirit, then you'd be amazed how from the spirit. You will also reap this wonderful fruit I've got I got I got a baby in town now so excited my niece Courtney so you met Courtney and her husband Matt who doesn't worship leading for us and they now have four-month-old Wesley Wesley and so first baby grandchild in the family and so they live here and so you Wesley, I'm not. I've already strolled Wesley all around the neighborhood and then we had lunch this past week with some of the family and we went out we are at the golf shop and we have lots and I said, can I just want Wesley around show him around and you know he loves the scenery you get will be fussy side doing the baby around in a long time and first name is not as strong as I was before the others, shall be will got and the second thing was just how much fun is grandest. You can just do anything you want to basically and so a wagon untaken around I saw Wes am just talking to Wesley in size and the first thing we go as it was going to go into the golf shop. You know, your uncle Alan likes golf. I think you go like golf a lot, Wesley. You know you will be fine golfer coming here to hear here's the golf pro thereby say hey to Wesley. Yes I said and you see all these golf clubs here.

Your uncle Alan to get any of them for you. You come out to play golf with me it out as well. Around 11 about asset of Oregon going all golf I say when I do it just so when you have a sport yet know what he likes but we don't come in this world and just, you know, like a blob and just nothing happens to us and in and we just discover ourselves. That's not what happens. Beloved people so into our lives we start taking these things in and fruit comes out of it right a lot. You have been you had bad things sewn into your life, and man that's why that's why we pray for one another. We need healing from that what Paul is saying is you got the opportunity to so into the spirit. It's not an accident who's got Lovejoy peace patients kind is good in his favor. The generals and self-control is not an accident. God's given us away and amazed by his spirit blogger what I'm saying I'm out of time, but we need the gifts of the Holy Spirit because we need the power of God, let loose in this world, my goodness. Sometime people say well we just need to get back in the first century because the church was being authenticated and we don't really need a nap in this world we need to get in the power of God most need somebody to get healed. They'll say, surely God is in this place. We need somebody got a gift of wisdom to speak to the divisions in the racism of this world and bring some sense to make the gifts of the most high God and man. We made the spirit because you get sometimes all empowered by God, and they don't have the character of Christ then is this is a stench in the nostrils of people who don't know the Lord and it brings pain and hurt when people are puffed up. Also if we could just have somebody who had the gifts and the fruit someone who could come and demonstrate both his name is Jesus hear the Holy Spirit without measure. He moved in the gifts miraculously, and he never send the had constant communion with his father. He had perfect character and he Christians is in you is by the presence of Jesus as you have both his gifts and is in your life and as a gospel right and final moment there with fruit in gifts as the teaching and were still in the middle of this series. He is the perfect example of balance here and that's where we find our satisfaction exactly Sardis will say to the Christian listener start with this. You have Jesus his own spirit resides in you. It's mystical, it is mysterious is wonderful but you truly have the spirit of Christ himself will the Holy Spirit is actively at work producing fruit and you now. There are a lot of things that compete for that right and that's where we get kinda frustrated with the boy, and you might call that flash or just old sin nature. Whatever it might be competing but I just, instead of focusing so much on trying to get rid of that old sin nature. Let your focus be on this. I have the spirit of Jesus and me and I promise you if you're Christian you have gifts of the spirit and let yourself be aware that God is using you and if you feel he's not using you that much. Start with the evidence of where he has. That's what I would say Daniel, you start with that and like everything God, who began a good work in you will bring it to its completion.
