From Self-Confidence to Spirit-Confidence [Part 2]

It was hard and the professor was mean it was a bad combination.

Hard-core's mean professor but and to illustrate how hard it was and how mean he was.

We had a pop test early on in which he just handed out a blank piece of staff paper. You know it's got all the scores of lines on musical notes on but nothing on it and he said I want everyone to write out the music are your favorite Christmas Carol place you talking about some reason I had just been playing silent night and I thought well it was in six, eight, and I think I can get this thing is on Sunday Silent Night start putting down notes up with the meter up with the notes, and drawn in the bars and everything.

I turned it and I got back I can't remember how miserable the grade was on at the main thing I remember is not always read all over, and he had written one, he said I don't know what song this is and then he added, but it is not, Silent Night, start with my music theory course and all of a sudden I began to take this course are you kidding me. You mean the scales in the cords are the stuff that builds the music and that's how we write our songs and I understood for the first time I said what all this is like some beautiful art or some glorious math problem that all works and fits together and this is why harmony works and this is why these notes sound good together and they sound bad and that's why this key business and that's what I like best all the stuff wasn't unimportant.

It was very important, but it was all pointing to this and it all fits together something like that. But in glorious infinite proportion happens in Peter's life is filled with the Holy Spirit and this is what happened in my life more increasing land filled with the Holy Spirit. This is what happened is just one after the other. All is okay here goes up as a Jewish boy and he is taught that there are these laws of the Torah and God revealed himself at Mount Sinai and there was the Passover, they kill the Passover lamb and celebrated Passover and there is feast of weeks at Pentecost in Jewish tradition said that this was back from the time of Mount Sinai when fire came and God spoke to people and revealed himself in. He knew about the day of atonement that takes place in the fall Festival high priest who goes if he knows all these things, but there like chords and scales that don't relate to anything at this way the law was to people like do this do this do this do this and you don't even get the full picture and what happens when the Holy Spirit fills Peter and feels these disciples on Pentecost day is the most awesome gigantic hot you could ever get like the light just turning on and Peter says this is that I was. Beloved, when you realize that you are a piece in this puzzle that your life is integrated into this cosmic glorious plan of God that is at work in the world. And so even though even though there's all of the Roman empire that would be against him. Even all the Jews who had crucified Jesus and didn't understand.

In this moment is the Holy Spirit is being poured out. Peter realize he is part of something that is enormous. It is the providential glorious plan of God and everything starts. Make everything starts making sense. It doesn't mean he understands everything is going happen, it just means the big picture starts to come together and you can make it through the little things that you don't understand when you go where is God in this and I don't understand.

We will be connected with God in this way, and he says that there will be signs and this is what we call apocalyptic language.

Some of the prophetic imagery like the moon turning to blood been, and signs in the heavens. So all of this is pointing to. This was called the great and terrible day of the Lord. Or maybe it is the ESV translate the great and magnificent day of the Lord was prophesied over and over and Joel prophesied about it and what everyone thought about this day is that on the day of the Lord God is going to show up in power and evil is going to be judged and the Lordship of God is going to be established a new way so everyone grew up in the Jewish culture. Looking towards the day of the Lord in which this great change would take place the day the Lord and the other reference that Peter has here is to David and he twice quotes two different scriptures that he associates with David and the one from Saul, David. David was the king of Israel and God promised David that someone from his throne from his family would always be on the throne. So, another was some body in the lineage of David would be on the throne. And so there was, along with the expectation of the great and magnificent day Lord, every Jewish child grew up with the expectation of the coming Davidic king, you can't get to more important prophetic concepts than those two concepts that all the visual look for to the decisive day of the Lord power of God comes evil is judged and looks forward to when the son of David, the new King comes is going to set up this great throne and be like David was establish the borders of Israel expanded them had military prowess political rest and prosperity is to be like David but even better if you been under persecution for centuries and centuries. Various empires have trampled you down and now you're under the thumb of the Roman Empire.

You can imagine how much you look forward to this day of the Lord in which evil as judge of the power of God comes and how much you look forward to the new King David who is going to come that talent right will have more teaching moment from today's important series pressures always find it hard to say no way that shall disappoint someone one relationship in paradise.

What you're saying is of the day of the Lord has come, and Jesus is establishes Lordship Jesus has risen from the dead.

Jesus is to be celebrated because the victory has been one evil has been judged the day the Lord is at hand. This is you have to wait any longer. You have to think about this and this is the kingdom of God here now well say the word repent. Most people think of me. You need to try harder to get better and not send so much. That's not what repent means repent means change your mind literally what it means matter no way of change your way of thinking, and Peter saying change your minds everyone of you. This is the day of the Lord now it's here now. Today's the day of salvation reference to David he is saying David lenience and the promise of God and the prophecy that there would be someone from David's family that's always on the throne. This is going to pass because Jesus is the son of David, and he say what happened is that when David is speaking in a solemn and he says the Lord says to my Lord. The father says that the son, the enemy would be major. This is come to pass.

So saying it's all being fulfilled in front of your eyes and beloved, when you get filled with the Holy Spirit. The word of God starts coming alive to you just cannot encourage you enough to ask God every day to fill you with his spirit. You don't get an excused absence from the suffering of the world you just don't you just don't and sometimes we go through valleys some time to go to mountaintops, but we walked through stuff in the rain falls on the just and the unjust and so Christian victory doesn't mean oh I don't have any problems please don't be disillusioned when you have a problem that comes along and think that you're doing something wrong.

Remember when they went into the promised land. They were battles to befall your promised land is a battleground and we are in a spiritual battle and you're going to face things in this world, but what it means to live in the spirit of Christian victory is to live in ever-increasing certainty that Jesus has come, and he has overcome this world do not let your hearts be troubled. You can trust in God in this world you will face problems. Jesus said, but take heart I have overcome the world and is overcome the enemy and he's overthrown the enemy and he has defeated death, and this is what happens.

Holy Spirit bears witness to your spirit that your child of God and of a child of God and a co-heir with Christ himself, and you start getting a certainty about the glories of Christ and the glories that await all of us when you get a greater certainty what I say is, is this is where you start just knowing that you know you want me about that you know that you know that you know how you know I don't know I just know I know that I know that I know what how do you know that you know everything will be okay in the end I just know I know I know I know I know and beloved, when you start getting worried about this world and you start thinking about this crazy election year and you want to pull whatever. Here you have left out of your head and you want everything. I advise you get filled with the Holy Spirit. Remember that Jesus Christ is Lord of the cosmos, and he is on his throne and he has been exalted, and the Holy Spirit will not let you forget it, and the fourth thing before thing that happens that I wish I had a lot of time to talk about because it might be the most important thing of all is that as soon as Peter is filled with the Holy Spirit.

There is no such thing as being filled with the Holy Spirit want to hoard the experience there is no such thing. You have the love of God is shed abroad in your heart not want to share with the whole world. It is no such thing is that that's not the way it works is is like when you experience something beautiful when you experience something wonderful don't you just want to also like you can go to a good restaurant without walked out telling 10 people out really good job dropout we go down the beach. I always like to run out to the beach and just say hello to the beach and the life you like things are getting settled in. All she's wiped things down and end and put things away so that I like years ago I ran out to the beach and the sun was setting and the sun was setting and Ocean Isle Beach in the wintertime you can see it, just over the edge of the water because the way that island lays out and it was dropping fast. You have sons drop. I ran and I said honey I said you gotta come see this you can see the sun setting out a minute please come is beautiful. When I was just beholding the prettiest sunset ever seen at the beach and maybe the pre-sunset ever and she didn't come as I ran back out start to get mad get out here right now the sun is setting.
