Manna Every Morning [Part 1]

All you need is grace for today which is good because God only gives grace for today when his theory is that that we called from now on I want to talk to you at today about a strange and beautiful story in the scripture about manna I like to call it manna every morning I were learning about living in the moment living from now on when it be wonderful not to drag the past with you or to spend your time worrying about the future, which is live from now on. What a great story to turn to in Exodus chapter 16 you have your Bible with you telling me they are the second book in the Bible Exodus in the 16th chapter, and will pick up reading at verse 13.

The people of God have been by mighty miracle delivered from their slavery in Egypt, and God is taking them toward the promised land.

As soon as they get hungry they grumble, and they complain, and God provides a mysterious provision of food called manna where verse 13 in the evening quail came up and covered the camp and in the morning dew lay around the camp and when the dew had gone up.

There was on the face of the wilderness of fine flake -like thing finest frost on the ground when the people of Israel saw it, they said to one another. What is it and not know what it wants and Moses told him it is the bread that the Lord is given you to eat. This is what the Lord has commanded gather that each one of you as much is he can eat, and shall take each taken over. According to the number of the persons that each of you has in his tent, and the people of Israel did so, they gathered some more, some last when they measured it with an omer. Whoever gather much had nothing left over, and whoever gather little had no lack, each of them gathered as much as he could eat and Moses said to them, let no one leave any of it till the morning that not listen to Moses. Some left part of it till the morning and it bread, worms and stank. And Moses was angry with and I have an ongoing dispute and she thinks that you should throw out food after the expiration date. I think these throughout food went smells bad.

I read I have some evidence for this bit that really the expiration date is says better if used by other got a picture here of a couple of days, one not best there is best if used by, and here's another matter.

If used by there I make in my case right there better if used by does it mean you have to throw it away. Do you say that some food doesn't need to be thrown away.

I had a couple three roommates. My first year out of college, lived in Winston-Salem did youth ministry and I lived in the downstairs of a rental house three guys upstairs and nobody was very neat but we had one guy, one brother sets at a terrible habit of just leaving his food on a plate in his room one day and one one of my roommates and I we just had it. We just that we got to clean this house out little bit. We went back in his room. You just could not build.

Leave the stuff that was growing there was plates and then have more mold on it that had food. I think that stuff needs to be thrown out. So, for example, as you can see in this slide the domain on the left, I think you can keep that one tomato on the right. I agree that needs to get his to bread on the left. That's very, very good, nice bread bread on the right. That's clearly throw it out so and I have an ongoing dispute and but we don't we don't keep keep stuff expire very long around our house and and and but but nobody wants the smelly moldy stuff because we we know it's it's it's rotten and so when we come to this strange wonderful story in which Israelites and they grumble their hungry I something would be better off the slaves in Egypt and in God and God gives him this mysterious food called manna that only last for a short period of time that they gather every every day and so manna we don't know what it looks like it might've looked something like this. People guessed it almost like I do like thing on the ground. What manna is.

The word manna means what is it and he puts like their grandson. What is it what is it they never did know exactly what it was.

So they just called it what is it that's what manna means that they ate, what is it of the whole, the whole time they were in the in the wilderness. We don't know what the rotten man look like, but if you held onto it very long. It very quickly might've look like this. Now that's discussing take that picture away, but I wanted you to stick in that manner that not only did it not last. But it became putrid very quickly.

There are some lessons for us about the grace of God here in about what it means to live from now on their absolutely magnificent. I am just amazed at the Bible I'm I just I've been studying this same book. Most of my life and I just enthralled by the fact that it one big story written over so many different centuries that all points towards the grace of Jesus all points towards Christ himself and the story of manna is a shadow and it is foreshadowing. It is telling us in advance, something about the gospel. Something about Jesus. Something about about grace so I'm going to plow right into this text, and draw out some observations about manna, I wanted to show you what we learn about manna. There's more that we learn about manna from the story but I'm to show you some things we learned about manna and then from that I want to very plainly just the kind of thing you take with you right into the day right to the week show you some principles for living that are based on what we seen at this incredible story on the first thing to say is that manna is a gift.

The people grumbled, but God provided for them anyway. Look at Exodus 16, 2 to 4 the whole congregation of the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness and the people of Israel said to them, would that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt.

We sat by the meat pots and had bread to the full.

You have brought us out here in this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger is just absolutely extraordinary incident that people who had been slaves for hundreds of years who are miraculously delivered and finally have their freedom within a very short period of time when their stomach rumbled with a little bit of hunger and fear overtook them they reinterpreted their past and thought be better off just to go back to our slavery. It's a it's a cliché we often say, but it's one thing to take people out of Egypt is another thing to take the Egypt out of them is one thing to come into new freedom in Christ is another thing to take that inward sense of old identity out and become really who you are in Christ and so they just grumbling what I wanted to say this the beginning of this hole that we learn about manna and what will learn about the grace of Jesus is every story you read in the Bible in one way or another. It's about the grace of God to our kids growing up.

The thing I just dislike the most was whining. I just like know we got we got everything we have nothing to whine about and I decide. So I always try to nip it in the butt. And I know that that God doesn't like grumbling is a father and he wants his children to be appreciative. Here's what's amazing about the grace of God.

Just because we sin God doesn't stop giving grace just because the people grumbled, did not cause him to not still send the manna and this is extraordinarily important news because the Bible teaches that Christ died for the ungodly. While they were still in their sin. This is not an invitation as they will go ahead and grumble… Here. This is something about manna look back at verse 16. Again, this is what the Lord has commanded gather of it. Each one of you as much as he can eat you each taken over. According to the number of persons that each of you has in his tent so our idea that we all are supposed to have the same amount of whatever good thing from God is really more I idea than God, and in fact it offends our Western and modern rationality to think that we don't all have the same amount of talent or that we don't all have the same gifts from God, but that very clearly in the Bible.

The picture is one of absolutely God's love is infinite for every single human being in every single Christian is 100% equally loved by God and a co-heir with Christ and shares the same authority in Christ, we have different gifts and God therefore gives it a very real sense different graces to different people and there are some people that have a whole lot of a grace in a certain area of their life that other people don't. And when you get to heaven is going to be amazing because you get a place where there's absolutely no jealousy and only love will find out the meaning behind the stories like Jesus told a parable of three servants were given different amount of talents. The concern of the stories was not that we make sure that everybody had the same amount of manna but that it was matching what was needed, which is which is the next point of all this manna always always matches all of the need so different amounts are needed and always matches any that's what verse 18 tells us when they measured it with an omer ever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack, each of them gathered as much as he could eat, so here's what happened with the minutes of mysterious, miraculous thing, but they'll just go out and gather and they're supposed to gather according to how much they needed for their household and they just gather and it wasn't like there was this precise, I know exactly how many courts a man I'm supposed to have today.

It is more like he just got you just gather you gathered as much you can gather what it seem like you but you bring home to your tent and then you you eat for eat of it and some people that look like they gather a whole lot. Well, it was just the right amount.

Some people got maybe they hadn't hadn't gathered quite enough and it was still the right amount for them.

There's no mention here of like because you were the younger and quicker head of household and you could run out there and gather all more than everybody else. Therefore somehow you got to hold onto it you had more than others or if you are a little bit slower, a little bit feeble.

You couldn't gather as much as quickly for your tent that somehow you ran out and said God which is given a lesson here right he was saying this is going to be the right amount that I'm providing it.

It's a gift and is going to is in and go to be different amounts is going to be the right amount and when we get to this and what is really kind of central mysterious deal about this tax them. I want conveyor principles out up and that is that manna can't be hoarded. Exit 6019 Moses said them. Let no one leave any of it over till the morning. It was just that day.

That's the picture of manna they were allowed to hoarded but they wanted to hoarded that they wanted.

They wanted to, because we all want to do that we would just like to hoarded God's grace just pile up enough provision and just enough that we could not have to deal trust him and that is the very reason that that God wanted them to gather day by day and it's the reason I did grace of God comes to us day by day seaweed. We'd love to hoarded wheat wit. We will little part of us is like orphans.

They if you if you've read about orphans ever ever maybe perhaps you've you've you've adopted a child and see this in practice. They have a tendency until they really know they belong. Your teams try to hoarded things and I had a buddy who when when he adopted the two or three-year-old boy who been through a lot of hard times like the little boy he love these little toy cars and it was just so funny took for this dad to find all the places all the places where it hidden the cars to come up under his mattress took about Monica, he just something he really loves we so afraid to lose it. So just got to hoarded it.

Just gotta hide it you would probably like to change the Lord's prayer instead of saying, give us this day our daily bread would probably like to say good Lord give us this day, enough bread for the next 10 years, and we won't have to keep coming back to you like this with this constant prayer. Dear Lord be easier own. You wouldn't if you just go ahead and give us everything we need for the next 10 years by you. By the way, tell me about the future so I don't have to worry about it anymore software works and that thing that happened is this is a just try to hoarded peers appears what we learn about manna hoarded manna always rots verse 20 they did not listen to Moses. Some left part of it till morning and it bread, worms and stank is that the right way to say that word is whether you visit it stank. And Moses was angry with them. He was bothered by this. A given clear instructions from the Lord. Really, here's the here's the principal about the manna is that is so interesting that they they hoarded it and and then it was just putrid nose teaming with maggots and just now your whole tent smells bad right you had this really sweet grace this really sweet provision and then you try to get hold onto it so that you didn't have to gathering the next day or didn't have to worry about whether it would be there the next day and now it's now it's something that smelling up the whole, the whole place.

In other words, it became worse than if they've never gathered it in the first place.

That's really initially will come back to that, but we like to be able to think that somehow we could just hoarded an interesting God made us the way he did. He made us so that were supposed to eat every day and sleep every day. Now you can you can fast and you can have Daisy go by without food or sleep but not long, long as your major bodies made not to be able to just store up everything and then not eat you wheat we just we aren't groundhogs or just eat a bunch and then go on hibernate and just kinda live off the fat. I mean I've had times I thought you know what I will do is go to eat everything in sight now and then I just won't eat for but you think I'll never be hungry again. And after you read the piece of cake base by and and and that was following the pizza that you had any go out never thought eat dinner, then the matter hours like my minimal hundred and it doesn't work it doesn't work that you can't say I was going to sleep for seven days and then I won't need to sleep for another seven days. That's not the way God made.

This is something woven into the design of humanity that is a reflection of the way God wants us to live day by day, moment by moment and from now on.

One more thing on it mention I notice about manna is that though a gift.

Manna must be gathered.

The first thing you learned about manna was even though people were grumbling, God still gave them grace and yet though it's a gift, it didn't mean that they were uninvolved in receiving the Lord gives every good gift that you ever get in your life. There is no good gift in this world that income from God, according to the Bible.

But what happens is that God gives gifts and he involves us in the active receiving of the gift that's a good picture of a gathering of the manna there's manna them will gather it to me that this is way this is a way that is the way it works in life's our daughter Abby. She actually went ahead and graduated a semester early from college and she was looking for an internship in her field of public relations and kinda hard to find a premier internship in the middle of the year like that. She had a lead on wine and interviewed with an internship that she thought she had and then she didn't get it. Just very disappointed.

And then we began praying about it and and the Lord opened up something she almost was above and beyond what you are thought with one of the top three PR firms in the nation that tie was kind of her dream job and not an internship, but a real job and so cc interviewed. She took it. She loves her team and she's working online you know about team members around the nation. And so she's gonna love it.

She'll be good at it but right now she did it work for Jesus. She's worked for five days and the baby are you ever remember what it was like when you started your first real full-time permanent job and you been a student before that and you think me and the students hard. You know because you got exams at all that but you when your student to get on Christmas break.

You get your fall break get the whole summer all the all the stuff and so after the second day of work and she's working hard now she's on the learning curve and she's working hard getting up early going. This did not stop until pretty late and after the second Daisy said that he she said how you ever get out of this thing where you get up in the morning you were work all day, take a little short lunch break and then you you you you are exhausted. You wrap up your workday have a little supper, maybe watch a TV show in fall in the bed exhausted and get up the next day and do the whole thing over again how you had to get out that I said here's how you get out of it you do that every day for the next 45 years and then you retire and that's a fact of the matter is, is a new thing God made us to be able to work Alan Wright. God is taking us to a promised land. There something in front of you and he's got sustaining grace for you is grace is not something can always understand but just eat the mystery.
