Unions all will be good. The truth is he's already started dying salt even happier than ever. He's got a commander that just wins one victory after another his kingdom is more settlement secure than ever. His daughter has found the man she lives in. David should be the one he held within the over what Saul did. He should be the one eaten alive with resentment and bitterness. I there are severe holes in the aftermath of killing Goliath. David ended up in a turbulent relationship with Saul was so consumed by that he repeatedly tried to kill David every time it happened. David responded wisely. Nobody maybe trying to take your life today, but do you ever have difficult relationships to deal with. If so, keep listening today on wisdom for the heart.

Stephen Davey takes us to first Samuel 18 he's in a series on the life of David called the singer today. He concludes his message entitled, behaving wise and walking wisely means you are able to discern what moment the perfect time to keep your mouth shut as everybody else is talking with verse six is a coming home. When David returned from striking out of listing women came out all the cities of Israel singing and dancing to meet King Saul with tambourines with songs of joy in with musical instruments for coming back getting me a later campaign for listing could be a general usage of one more campaign against the Philistines. But this is common in ancient times, victory celebrations are led by the women who meet the returning troops with dancing, singing, singing Hebrew text informs as its to fit all that is a group of women would say one thing and another group would sing back to the see how the lyrics are shared between them. In just a minute, but according to his story draws me to understand it was is rather dancing or not some random shuffle. This is in some unrehearsed to step twirler whatever this is actually very well organized thinking your minds of the parade and in their dancing. The worn dance.

The victory war dance of Israel details which have not survived the centuries. Raleigh told her doing typical of every culture that are symbolic, culturally rich songs and dances the kind of embodying the heart and the soul of that nation in our Western world we drop the choreographed dance and we have the national anthem that alone stirs our hearts. Whenever we hear it so were we sing along. By the way, is assigned to be really quick about this or this was the issue in Judges chapter 16 with the Philistines and captured Sampson put out his eyes given away his secret Delilah. They have not captured the King James translators and they brought him out when they were celebrating this good in this temple supported by these columns, the ESV says eight brought about to entertain them. King James translators to make sport the same verb found here in first Samuel 18 what they did effectively was a brought Sampson out of the courtyard near supporting pillars and then made him to mock him dance the victory dance of Israel and sing the national anthem of this nation that have been defeated and more importantly the God that had been defeated, so they made this man dance and sing their victory dance and song of a town arrival of the fact that that he's been in his nation is God defeated, and they laugh and they jeer the course brings the house down.

God is not vindicating Sampson's sinful stupidity. God is effectively judging. The Philistines otter blasphemy back to Samuel. You have this victory parade.

The victory dance in the chant and it's going back and forth and they have some lyrics that they've added, and these are the lyrics given to his mother, singing verse seven. Saul has struck Dennis thousands. David is 10,000. They go back and forth. Saul has struck down his thousands and David, his 10,000s thought about raining on Saul's parade that did it. Verse eight Saul was very angry and this saying these lyrics displeased and he said to himself.

By the then described David 10,000s and the meaning ascribed thousands and what more can he had.

Here's the issue, but the kingdom and Saul I David from that day on the weather not David picked up on suspicion of Saul were not told I would doubt it because of the way the chapter bears out at least until near the end of the chapter, but we do know from this chapter is that David isn't saying anything is not poking Saul in the eye. He's not going around house hunting. The new lyrics to this song. I love that new chorus of the Singaporean none of that behaving wisely means responding to promotion humility. Second, behaving wisely means tolerating the weaknesses of others with grace, we show you what I mean. First, the next day and evil or harmful spirit from God rushed upon the soul and he raved in his house while David was playing the liars.

He did day by day or whatever he was called stuffer moment business needs a better understanding God isn't doing evil. He doesn't or is attempting he's not worked out a deal with some demon. The word spirit. It might help you write in the margin. Your Bible can be translated breath, breath. This is the breath of God. The question is, it says evil or harmful and gives a better translation to be translated unpleasant you guys who translated as well. Miserable. In fact, the words rushed up on Saul Warfel upon Saul is from a word that means to literally overwhelm he's overwhelmed by this miserable breath from God was that sound like sound like conviction to me exactly. In fact, Joan will use the same verb to talk about his despair and will be translated terrified what's happening the Saul is the deep despairing terrifying miserable depressing conviction over his sin. Not to mention the crumbling of his self-made plans in a self-made kingdom, and his cellmate thrown in the promise of Samuel where he's been told it will be dynasty.

Your throat is going to go to your neighbor name now is contending with the rise of this young man may very well be the man to take his place and did you notice were told.

This takes place the day after the parade.

With this new song ringing in his ears tearing away his pride.

The convicting work of God in his heart because he refuses to repent eating him alive. So what you do when you try to silence a guilty conscience. What you do when you refuse to repent. I'll tell you what you don't do.

You don't get all quiet you turn up the music you get distracted you want to drive to work in silence. You think the moment it's quiet around you becomes even more miserable.

So find something to distract you to forget. To help you forget just about anything will do but never forget hearing Howard Hendricks in class talk about his neighbor who on the boat. He spent every spare minute on the boat, he would spend his day off waxing waxing and polishing his his boat. Many would come over to Hendricks. He came over him what time he said I got 37 coats of wax on my boat Hendricks would look at us so you know I never disparaged like I didn't say anything negative to him because I knew that my neighbors boat was his only form of anesthesia to deaden the pain of an empty life I find something to distract my not be bad in and of itself wrongly, but you feel convicted will give me great to me after the service. I thought the point.

The point is we gotta do something with her hands. We we gotta turn up the music.

We gotta get distracted. We gotta be entertain something because we cannot be quiet under the breath of a convicting God's will use that show only now he recognizes verse 10 was raving in his house. David's playing the lyre of small hand held harp, the forerunner of a guitar. Saul had his spear in his hand and Saul hurled the spear, for he thought I will. David David invaded him. This is the most shocking word of all twice twice in our David didn't dodge one spear, but to more than likely this phrase summarizes effective Saul through two different occasions.

Two different times spear David R could mean that he missed the first time and grabbed another spear dock one Saturday and come back later. Saul from spirit his own son Jonathan to use the downward digression of a man is eaten alive with envy things well said by Francis Bacon, that envy is the worst of all passions because it never gives you a holiday begins with her your hurts, which leads to hate which leads to hostility which can lead to harm her hate hostility harm, but again no word from David no angry retaliation.

David doesn't whistled outlier back and Saul's head. I don't know what you docs by the way, what do you do when somebody throws a spirit. You talk and second of all, and more importantly, don't pick it up throat is when you do lose, you join in the digression are plenty of people out there skilled spear throwing don't learn the art don't join them in that downward spiral. It will never give you a day off. Don't rush to the wrong interpretation here. I think David is unaware of Saul's true intention.

I think the chapter bears that which is why the lies. The second observation of the way I did. Evidently in the lives of the people of the court and in David's own mind.

This spear throwing is categorized as well. Saul's raving again.

What brings it on to talk to move or maybe it's the pressure maybe can help. It doesn't really mean anything by one author said that everyone at this point in time would believe the King Saul was dangerous but not malicious again were the ones that are let in on the inside scoop. We know what that they don't think that Saul is overwhelmed by something he can't control is overwhelmed by some dangerous, some difficult Psalm depressing episode, but this means that especially for David to get back on my little stall within spear reach is the David is making allowances for Saul as well. Even though he's the one used for target practice day that I think you be if you are a part of our assembly or if you were in your family or where you work, he would probably be the kind of person who is insulted and then he says they really didn't mean you know there's something else going on sure they didn't intend to just love those people giving the benefit of the doubt which by the way, is an evidence of true love fathered by other things. So exactly the grace of Jesus Christ.

The coming son of David, and it still blows my mind. It on the cross, he would effectively say father forgive them. They really don't fully understand what they're doing. Are you paying your cross Mrs.'s is not liability.

This is willingness to offer someone the benefit of the doubt.

This is oil of relationships.

This is what saddens relationships. This is the sap of grace and truth is we want people to give us the benefit of the doubt, knowing that's what I will do something rather horrid or mean or unkind and will so you know I'm just having a bad what a bad day and always void all of that content show is all that because I'm on that day. We want people to give us the benefit of that kind of doubt. Can you imagine David is a spirit I know you're just having a bad day and I'm really glad you're a bad shot. When you do this you are walking in wisdom, behaving wisely means responding to promotion with humility. It means tolerating the weaknesses of others with grace.

David didn't know what was going on won't for a while. There's one more characteristic I want to point out behaving wisely means surrendering to the providence of God without complaint. So far this rise of David is been a kind of a Cinderella story, an event apart from the crazy kangaroo was offered spheres.

This is been an amazing life. David is now the palace's closest friend is the king's son. He's been promised the king's daughter is traded in his tattered tunic for Royal clothing.

He's training in the art of battle is been promoted, and everyone loves but in the remainder of this chapter was on a flyover. David is going to encounter some setbacks which we could easily miss. I want to point them out to them. First of all he's demoted now find verse five and then look over in verse 13 I want you to notice the subtle difference in verse five David is placed over all the men of war, no doubt under the trained and experienced five general Ed effectively in command of the entire army verse 13 Saul removes him from his presence, his immediate presence and makes him a commander of a thousand words. David loses his seat with the Joint Chiefs of Staff and now he's given a single regiment of men. This is a demotion. That's obvious would have made people wonder and talk second of knowing demoted.

He's denied that there is some space of time in this chapter as we allow for several campaigns to take place. David's coming and goings of military terminology for leading campaigns. Saul is delaying his prize. Remember, one of them to give his daughter to the man who defeats Goliath. That hasn't happened.

Saul has two daughter that hasn't happened. Verse 14 informs us that David is walking wisely in all his undertakings. Everybody sees observes the Lord is with them next verse 15 when Saul, Saul, that he had great success that as he was walking with wisdom. He stood and fearful of him at all. Israel and Judah love David free without a human before them.

Saul is thinking Osama is going to wait wait wait wait wait. Maybe one of those campaigns don't get it by an air our something, but David just die. David is humility is saying the king of others.

He really didn't deserve to be a son-in-law's. This delay continues on his giving the king again. The benefit of the doubt is verse 19, but at the time when Maryland Saul's daughter should have been given to David.

She was given to Adrienne L them a whole.

A fight instead.

David's demotion and now the denial of the king's daughter is spelling trial by David, but now it's clear that not everybody loved it. David begin purposefully resists any urge to get even to strike back to demand is due, to defend his honor. In fact, I think by now David could have probably mounted a successful coup. The armies behind him. They love he successful in every campaign. The household servants that would also include the officials of the Kings palace love him. Saul is a raving mad lunatic. He's lost a tremendous amount of credibility he lost it by not fighting Goliath by actually allowing an unarmed Shepherd effectively to go after Goliath, unable to clean any of that prize.

He's lost his reputation among the palace of Levi's spear throwing episodes. Everybody's got on eggs now everybody knows that God is with David and Saul knows that then about the time I think Saul wonders of David is to fade away.

Yesterday's news look without verse 20. Now Saul's daughter, Michael love David and they told Saul and the thing please them white. They told Saul that his daughter loved David and it please note that is having to find out that his daughter loves anybody right you me to tie my youngest daughter loves this man, this young man why you don't have to wonder why please them because in verse 22 were told. Saul commanded the servants look without telling them or him that I sent you speak to David in private and say, behold, the king has delight in you. We never mind the spirit holes in the wall. The king actually really like to, and all the sermons love you now then become the king's son-in-law David says but how I'm a poor man finally tells us that the king is also lied about going another one of his promises to give wealth to the champion over Goliath. I can pay the Manohar. The bridal Valerie to be demands of that. The problem David you you can do it with Caleb did of all, the king is harkening back to his nose.

Old Testament he's thinking about Caleb and he sees he's going allow you to to become the champion then you'll get the daughter. What a way to do to be the champion go kill 100 Philistines, author, foreskins, and bring them to the king and out of the payment enough crass and rude in gross and bloodied.

Yet it was a common practice that's always practicing here. In fact, we've discovered on the walls of the temples of Ramses the third seems drawn depicting the counting of ham to prove the death of enemies and a pile of foreskins collected for the same purpose. She, David, what you gotta do is go out and kill honor Gentiles in the gotta be able to prove they were an unsuspecting Israelites bring them in and Saul will give you his daughter in a Saul assumes the David won't live through this campaign. I mean every Philistines rally to this chart. Verse 27 tells us not only did that but here's another hundred for good measure. I think David is wise to the king. He knows that he can get out of his promises and the text implies a public display and counting David publicly lays out his scouts, so to speak.

The king is entirely boxed in any stripped of all his excuses. He is publicly to his servants promised his daughter and now he has to give his daughter to the man he drags more than anybody else on the planet. He has no recourse. Verse 29 Saul was even more afraid of David David. Saul was David's enemy continually don't miss that last line is the throwaway none of it is easy to downplay the implications. Saul was David's enemy continually Cinderella story change very quickly.

Saul is stop into one of the one of his books. Lloyd John Ogilvie were tells of an Olympic race in early Christian history for one young athlete came in second place in the so disturbed him seven devastated. He trained long and hard to believe he was better than the young man who won the gold medal. His memory was haunted by the day of things he might've done differently.

The race should've won the crowd chanted and cheered the name of the Victor they both come from the same town in when they return home. City fathers agree to commission the statue carved out of granite made in the likeness of this gold medalist was completed it was positioned on a towering base so that the city's most revered athletes stood some 20 feet high in the center of the town square was more than this defeated athlete could take corrosive envy ate away at couldn't bear the daily reminder of his failure so he decided to destroy that statue and he developed a plan that took shape in his mind. Late each night in the city square was empty. He would sneak out to the towering statue with a chisel and hammer and he would quietly as he could chisel away at the base of that statue, hoping to weaken the foundations of the baby and so blustery rainstorm or some driving wind storm it would topple over and break a dozen peaks.

One night as he chiseled away with a little too much energy and anger and envy. He went to that heavy statute toppled over.

The villagers found him the next morning crushed beneath the statue of the one he had grown to hate among others. Moral of the legend lies in the fact that that young man in reality had been dying long before one stroke at a time in about 13 years. Saul will be dead. The truth is he's already started dying by the end of this chapter Saul should've been happier than ever. He's got a commander that just wins one victory after another.

His kingdom is more settlement secure than ever is daughter has found the man she lives in that brings happiness to their David should be the one need not within the over what Saul didn't give. He should be the one eaten alive with resentment and bitterness. I mean, there are spear holes in the wall, never treated him and verse 30 though ends with the same phrase to begin this chapter the David had more success. There's that word again.

David walked more wisely than all the servants of Saul's name was highly esteemed walking and wisdom is responding to promotion with humility is tolerating the weaknesses of others with grace is surrendering to the providence of God without wonderful if in the story of God were to declare that you walked wisely.
