R. M. We continue looking at stand ye in holy places selected sermons and writings of Harold B. Lee the 11th president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. This book was given away as a Christmas gift by the first presidency of the church in 1995. It's on page 159 and it has to do with when God was going to lift the ban on those of African heritage night. Bear in mind folks, this book was published in 1975. This is three years prior to the priesthood revelation as they call it which allowed all worthy male members to hold the priesthood regardless of their race.

He says we have found some who are asking quote. How long is it going to be before the church changed his policy with regard to the Negro." And I have said, if you will just change a couple of words so that the question will be how long is it going to be before the Lord, not the church changes his, not its policy.

You will see how utterly silly your question is when there is to be anything different from that which the Lord has told us already. He will reveal it to his prophet and no one else. There's a couple of things that I want to mention when it comes to the statement. First of all, notice that Harold B. Lee is crediting God with this prohibition that had been placed on black members for many many years in the LDS church when he says, how long is it going to be before the Lord, not the church changes his not yet policy so here we find that Harold B. Lee is crediting God with this prohibition. I think that needs to be emphasized because now when you read the gospel topics essay on Blacks and the priesthood. They try to make it sound like this was never God's doing. We will even know how this got started, but there certainly were a lot of things that were floating around before 1978.

That certainly needed to be corrected and I think one of the people who needed to be corrected by what were going to be reading is Harold B. Lee, who was the 11th president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Now in this quotation. In my opinion he tends to dodge the question. He could've very easily had told this person or these persons were asking this question. He could've easily pointed to Brigham Young because Brigham Young gave the answer to that question.

This is found in the Journal of discourses, volume 7, pages 290 and 91. If you want to get the whole context there, but I want to start about in the middle of this section and I want to bring to your attention.

This important fact. Brigham Young said this on October 9, 1859, October 9 was a general conference and in looking at Harold B. Lee's book, we have been talking about the importance of general conference and how when something is said in general conference that you can bet that this is got to be the will of the Lord the mind of the Lord, the voice of the Lord. So the question I'm asking you is when Brigham Young said this in general conference.

Was this the mind of the Lord. Was this the will of the Lord in the voice of the Lord.

This is what Brigham Young said that curse will remain upon them and they never can hold the priesthood or share in it until all the other descendents of Adam have received the promises and enjoy the blessings of the priesthood and the keys thereof until the last ones of the residue of Adam's children are brought up to that favorable position.

The children of Cain cannot receive the first ordinances of the priesthood. They were the first that were cursed and they will be the last, from which the curse will be removed when the residue of the family of Adam come up and receive their blessings, then the curse will be removed from the seed of Cain and they will receive blessings in like proportion. Now let me ask you this.

Did that happen in 1978. What happened in 1978 that all of a sudden this was supposed to be lifted. Brigham Young is not giving that impression at all until the last ones of the residue of Adam's children are brought up to that favorable position. The children of pain. They were the first that were cursed and they will be the last, from whom the curse will be removed.

I don't see how you could possibly say that 1978 was the magical year that was supposed to happen in light of what Brigham Young has said here. I want to point out something you had mentioned that this book was published in 1975 Spencer W.

Kimball is now the president of the church and I want to read from the race in the priesthood gospel topics essay a portion here that has to do with Brazil because this is very important to understand 1975 is when stand ye in holy places is produced. This is what the essay says Brazil in particular presented many challenges.

Unlike the United States and South Africa were legal and de facto racism led to deeply segregated societies. Brazil prided itself on its open integrated and mixed racial heritage in 1975 the church announced that a temple would be built in São Paulo, Brazil as the temple construction proceeded church authorities encountered faithful black and mixed ancestry. Mormons who had contributed financially and in other ways, to the building of the San Pablo Temple, a sanctuary they realize they would not be allowed to enter once it was completed their sacrifices as well as the conversions of thousands of Nigerians and Ghanaians in the 1960s and early 1970s moved church leaders. I think that's important bill because what it's saying is there emotional interactions with the Blacks in the Brazil as well as in Africa seem to move them toward that way and I went to suggest Spencer Kimball certainly knew that this revelation was gonna come about, sooner than later because he's the one in 1975, who instituted that there will be a temple built in Brazil where most people have some type of black blood in them. That would have prevented them from being able to go into that temple and it makes you wonder Carol B.

Lee was he on the same page is Spencer W. Kimball.

In effect, Spencer W.

Kimball writes the forward to this book, but I just read earlier was the only quote that has anything to do with Blacks and the priesthood. But Bill, you have another book that you have found from Harold Deeley where he writes a lot on this issue. I think perhaps working to see some things in the book you're going to present to us that are not found here, and I'm wondering is Spencer W.

Kimball in 1975. Knowing that this revelation was around the corner prevented quotes like this from getting into this book.

In fact, I'm surprised the one quote actually made it in will that's a great question to ponder and one that we have is this book that I'm holding decisions for successful living by Harold B. Lee was published while Harold B. Lee was the president of the church and in the foreword to this book. This is what it says.

Towards the end you will find within these pages, truths of timeless value expressed in a contemporary setting, and those who hunger and thirst after righteousness will be filled with that wisdom which comes of experience and learning, and more importantly with the light of truth which comes of divine revelation, did you say timeless truths timeless truths which comes of divine revelation and who wrote the foreword to this book decisions for successful living. Hinckley, the 15th president of the LDS church, and when we look at some of the things that Harold Bailey said in this book. I'm sure it will probably embarrass a lot of members of the LDS church.

Let me begin with this. I'm looking at page 164 and this is important folks, because this really gives you an insight to the thinking of Harold B. Lee, who was the president of the church and who authored the book that we're examining and was given away as a Christmas gift.

This is what he says on page 164. There is no truth more plainly taught in the gospel than that our condition in the next world will depend upon the kind of lives we live here all that are in the grave shall hear his voice, and shall come forth.

They that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. Is it not just as reasonable to suppose that the conditions in which we now live have been determined by the kind of lives, we lived in the preexistent world of spirits that the apostles understood this principle is indicated by their question to the master when the man who was blind from his birth was healed of his blindness. John 92 says master who did sin, this man or his parents that he was born blind when we first started looking at this book we were looking at what Harold B.

Lee felt was a qualification to be a prophet and one of the things he said was that a prophet isn't chosen because he has studied books about religion. Now, this would've been a good time when Harold B.

Lee should've studied the New Testament. He cites John 92.

Assuming that this question asked by this individual about the man's blindness was actually a doctrine that had to do with something that happened in the preexistence. What Harold Bingley doesn't give you is Jesus's answer and it says neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him the answer is right there in Harold B.

Lee seems to miss it though what you say. This is an elementary idea that if you're going at take something you just don't quote it out of its context to give the whole context. You need Jesus's response to this absolutely and in tomorrow's show were going to look a little bit deeper into the mind of Harold B.
