Christian lady asked his Vancouver backbone of prophecy. The key to understanding Revelation and other prophetic scriptures throughout the reforms of the group drew more guards as the 70 weeks described in Daniel chapter 9 shooting like on the meaning behind the mysteries in this picture is passed from the handwriting on the wall introduced the 70 weeks of Daniel, thank you for joining us today as we are moving toward the final chapters of the book of Daniel. This is one of the most critical portions of the book. This is one of the reasons why many of the liberal scholars have tried to late date book of Daniel. They want to make Daniel's writing happen after the things he prophesied had already taken place so that there is no miracle in it, but I promise you this book is not late dated. It is written exactly what it said it was these things that Daniel wrote about. He wrote about by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit in their written about in such a way that they're almost like reading history, but its history, yet lived history that hasn't happened yet. It's called prophecy. And this is one of the great prophetic sections of the word of God. We need to get started that were ready to jump into this rather lengthy discussion of the 70 weeks of Daniel is part one European rabbis study the prophecy of the 70 weeks that he came to the conclusion based on the 26th verse of that prophecy that Messiah had already come because this coming was to be before the destruction that he knew took place in A.D. 70. So one day he approached an older rabbi and he asked the rabbi this question. He said where is the Messiah rabbi did know the answer but told him that he thought the Messiah was in New York City so the rabbi sold almost everything that he owned and he bought passage to New York City seeking for the Messiah came to Metropolis, which is the entry point for so many who visit our land and he began to wander up and down the streets of New York City extensively looking for the Messiah. One night he walked past the door of a mission, a gospel mission and he heard singing coming from that building. So we went in and sat down at the back part of the mission and that night he heard a gospel message, he heard a preacher stand up and talk about Jesus Christ who is the Messiah and that night, Leopold can't receive Jesus Christ as Savior and as his Messiah. Shortly after that, he bought a stable swept it out. Set up some chairs and he began to hold his own gospel meeting. Believe it or not.
That was the first outreach of what was to become the American Board of missions to the Jews. It started because Amanda read the prophecy going to study and recognize that it taught that Jesus was the Messiah that he had already come and it opened up a whole new life to a European rabbi without question. Men and women, the prophecy that we are about to discover and discuss together is one of the great portions of God's word. Sir Isaac Newton once said that about the time of the end there would be a body of men who would grow up to turn their attention to the prophecies of the word of God and that they would insist upon their literal interpretation in the midst of much clamor and resistance where living in that time many have stood up in this time to declare the prophetic truth of God's word and to say that it is literally understood, even as God intended it to be. It was that same Isaac Newton, who later said we could state the truth of Christianity on this prophecy alone because five centuries before Christ foretold his coming. Most scholars believe that Daniel 924 to 27 is the backbone of all prophecy when they say that what they mean is that it's the skeletal outline into which all prophetic events fit. If you didn't have Daniel 924 to 27, 24, 25 would be very difficult understand and major portions of the New Testament book of Revelation would be difficult to comprehend what God in his wonderful Providence has given to us in the Old Testament an outline if you will a concordance if you will, a table of contents to say here's the beginning. And here's the end and all of those things which you will in the future fit into the skeleton that I'm giving you now.
The thing that's interesting about the 70 weeks of Daniel, which is the prophecy is that 60 9/70 of it has already been fulfilled. Now that almost makes this not a prophetic study, but a historical study doesn't.
And yet many women exciting thing about it is this prophecy was given years before it was later to be fulfilled. We can read Daniel's prophecy and we will be able to go back into history, and trace the literal accurate detailed fulfillment of Daniel's prophecy of the 69 weeks and their accurate fulfillment and then as we do that we will be able to look into the future to the 70th week which is yet to be fulfilled as we view the 69 70th having been fulfilled literally. We will have great confidence to believe that what God has done in the first part of the prophecy he will surely do in the last part and it will give us confidence to believe even in a better way than we already do in the accuracy of God's word. There is no single prophecy men and women that is so crucial to biblical interpretation to apologetics to eschatology Daniel nine is literally the key to the prophetic word.
It's important that we study it in such a way as to understand it and I want us to look by way of introduction in the prophecy. First of all to the secret of the prophecy I want to give you little outline just some page to hang your thoughts on we won't get all through it but will just move through it. As far as we can will quit right. The secret of the prophecy. Now remember that we have already spent two messages in Daniel nine. We have talked about a prayer that Daniel prayed.
It covers the first 19 verses and as we study that prayer, we discovered that in that prayer. Some principles of life changing, dynamic prayer and that prayer is really the secret to this prophecy. This prophecy is the answer to Daniel's prayer the prayer that we study that taught us that prayer is to be motivated by the word of God, measured by the will of God manifested in our walk with God a walk of frequency and fervency mandated by our wickedness before God. So it's a prayer of confession and magnified by our worship of God. The secret of Daniel's 70 year prophecy is the fact that they his own heart and mind in prayer. Now the setting of the prophecy is given to us in verses 20, 21, and I want to go back in your Bibles and notice what's going on in the setting of this prophecy. Daniel says while I was speaking and praying and confessing my sin and the sin of my people, and presenting my supplication before the Lord, I want you to notice that he uses four words for prayer here. He says while I was speaking while he was praying while was confessing my sin and presenting my supplication while I was doing that in the midst of my praying God spoke to me. If you come down to the end of verse 21, you discover that he was praying in a very specific time, which in my estimation is an overwhelming thought the angel who answered his prayer came to Daniel about the time of the evening oblation to stop with me for a moment and think about that in the Jewish religion in their cultural worship. The time of the evening oblation was 3 o'clock in the afternoon. That's when the sacrifice was offered. Daniel was in prayer at that special time in the Jewish religious calendar and the thing that overwhelms me is that Daniel has been away from Jerusalem for almost 70 years.
He's been away from the temple for almost 70 years. He's been away from the police for almost 70 years. He's been away from any kind of semblance of organized religion. And yet, even though there was no celebration of the evening oblation and babbling at 3 o'clock in the afternoon.
Guess where Daniel was. He was praying and he was remembering that special time in the life of his land and in the life of his culture in the life of his faith at 3 o'clock in the afternoon Daniel at the time the evening oblation was praying I would ask you something. If we were in a foreign land. We had been dispossessed of our privileges as Americans. What would you be doing when we normally come together to worship with that be a special time for you to Daniel, the time of the evening oblation was a special time and he was cause to be in prayer. At that time.
That's an interesting thought that God so blessed him at such a time.
Now the interesting thing is that his Daniel is speaking and praying and confessing and presenting his supplication. The Scripture says, at the very moment of his prayer, he got his answer even the man Gabriel, whom I have seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly touched me. Daniel was so engrossed in his prayer, that when the angel showed up. He didn't even stop praying. The angel had to touch on the shoulder and say Daniel, you called Dr. Gabe line says that one day he took this part of Daniel the first 19 verses and he recited it in Hebrew and it took three minutes and so he computed that from the time Daniel began to pray, which is when we are told the angel begin to fly until the end of the prayer took three minutes, so the angel set an all-time speed record coming from heaven to earth in three minutes. No wonder the Scripture says Gabriel was caused to fly swiftly. Some of you probably think that angels are omnipresent, but they're not. They can't be everywhere at once.
They have to go from someplace to someplace they have to move in space and the thing that is really thrilling to me as here's Daniel on his knees before God is calling out to God to help them understand Jeremiah's prophecy concerning the end of the 70 years captivity and as these, praying God says to Gabriel look I want you to go down and give Daniel some information I want you to go right now, the Scripture says the commandment went forth. Gabriel flew swiftly down to the earth, and he walked into were Danny was praying he touched him on the shoulder that I got some you do remember, don't you, that Gabriel is God's special messenger angel. These the PR angel of heaven. Michael is super angel Gabriel is the announcing angel.
He's the one that told Mary about Jesus is the one that told Zacharias about John. He's God special messenger angel. So when Gabriel shows up, you know, something big, I mean us no little thing got to do. When Gabriel shows up to make the announcement yesterday when Daniel looked around and saw Gabriel. He recognized him as the man you'd seen at the beginning he knew something really great was going to happen, and indeed it did. The setting of the prophecy of Isaiah 6524 says it this way before they call I will answer and while they are speaking I will hear that's exactly what happened you ever gotten an answer in the middle of your prayer.
Not one other little introductory thought before we actually get into the prophecy itself down at the end of verse 23 is Gabriel is beginning to explain the prophecy to. He says at the beginning of my supplication. The commandment came for that I am come to show the for thou art greatly beloved, that was the thing that Gabriel uses his introduction to Daniel Lisa, Daniel, I have been sent down here to give you a prophecy and the reason I've come to give you this prophecy because you are greatly beloved goes the greatest source of prophetic information in the New Testament. The apostle John was the greatest source of prophetic information in the Old Testament. Most would agree it's Daniel and you know that they are alike in this sense, Daniel was greatly beloved, and when John speaks of himself in the Gospel that bears his name.
How does he call himself the disciple whom Jesus loved God, love, Daniel and God love John and the result of his love for them was that he revealed himself in a very special way to those two men I can give you the reason for God special love upon those men and I don't know how to understand that in terms of God's lack of respecting persons, except that as I study the life of Daniel and see his life of obedience for 70 years living a holy, righteous life before God. I see much of that same pattern in the life of the apostle John. He alone is left when Jesus is dying there for the cross of all the disciples they all forsook him and fled. But John is obedient in the book of Jude versus 20 and 21 we have two verses that I just want to leave with you by way of application. But, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God say how you keep yourselves in the love of God. Students, moms and dads. 1 Simple Way if you love me do what keep my commandments you know what I think the secret was to God, giving Daniel and John, the special privilege of being the bearer of prophetic revelation.
It was their unusual obedience to God and I am so bold as to wonder how God might wonderfully reveal himself to me and to you if I were determined to save my life on such a signal. Life of obedience to God not turning from the right hand to the left, moving anyway at all away from God's wonderful plan. Totally obedient. How wonderful it would be to see what God would do in revealing himself to us. That's the setting of the prophecy.
Now get into the nuts and bolts of the prophecy and if you're keeping in an outline were going to talk now about the sense of the prophecy before we really get into how this prophecy is fulfilled.
We need to do a little homework together.
I had a number of options open to me to teach this prophecy. One was just to tell you this is what this means. This is what that means. This is what this means in a trust that you believe me or I could take you through the process and we don't always go through the process.
In fact, most of the time. I think when people come to church. They want the cake recipe but sometimes we need to get the recipe to so to go to get the cake and the recipe and I want you to put your thinking And Stay with Me and Walk through Our Little Study of the Sense of This Prophecy. We Need to Get into Some Terms Ever Going Understand How This All Fits Together.
Now the First Thing That We Run into in Verse 24 in the Actual Prophecy Itself Is This 70 Weeks Are Determined upon Thy People Question Number One Is What Is a Week You Say Pastor Jeremiah Don't You Know What a Week Is Starts on Monday for Most Creatures, and It Goes through Sunday, or If You Follow the Calendar As We Understand It Starts on Sunday and Goes through Saturday. What Is a Week Well If You Think This Is a Week of Days, You're in Deep Trouble Because It Won't Work.
It Cannot Be a Week of Days. I Want to Show You How We Understand What the Term Week Means in the Old Testament.
First of All, the Word Itself Is the Old Testament Word Shall Block It Means Seven. That's All That It Means When You Read in Daniel Nine 2470 Weeks Are Determined Literally. It Says 77s Are Determined. It's Kind of like Our Work Doesn't If We Said 70,000 Are Determined We Would Know Doesn't Want the Word Seven in the Hebrew Is the Work Shall Block It Means 77s Are Determined 77's Are Determined upon Thy People and upon Thy Holy City. Now We Know That This Cannot Be 77's of Days. This Is 77's of Years Now.
Hang with Me and I'll Show You What I Mean, Turn in Your Bibles to the Book of Leviticus. Hope You Brought Your Bible Because of Them Do Some Homework Together in the 25th Chapter of the Book of Leviticus.
I Want You to Read with Me Versus Three and Four Here Were Going to See the Number Seven Associated with Years Not Days, Six Years Thou Shalt Sold by Field and Six Years Now so Prone by Vineyard and Get Her in the Fruit Thereof, but in the Seventh Year Shall Be a Sabbath of Rest under the Land a Sabbath for the Lord, Thou Shalt Neither Sold. I Feel More Prone by Vineyard Other Words, Here Is Seven Associated with Years. The Sabbath Year. We Know about the Sabbath Day, but Here Leviticus Teaches Us about the Sabbath Now Turn down in Your Bibles to Verses Eight and Nine and Notice Thou Shalt Number Seven Sabbath of Years under the 7×7 Years and the Space of the Seven Sabbath Severe Shall Be onto the 49 Years.
No Class What Happens in Your 50. What Is That Your What Jubilee Right in Verse Nine It Says, Then Thou Shall Cause the Trumpet of the Jubilee.
The Sound on the 10th Day of the Seventh Month in the Day of Atonement Shall Ye Make the Trumpet Sound throughout All Your Land.
So Were Talking Now about Not Seventh of Days but Seventh of Years and Then We Moved Even One Step Further Than That and Were Talking about 77's of Years Followed by One Year, Which Is the Year of Jubilee. So in the Old Testament Mind the Word Seven Shall Block Was Often Used To Describe Not a Week of Days As We Understand It but a Week of Years. It Was Very Much a Part of Their Culture.
Now If You Continue in Your Study of the Ninth Chapter of Daniel. You Discover That What Is in the Mind of Daniel Is Not Days.
Daniels Thinking in Terms of Years, Go Back to the Ninth Chapter Again and Notice in Verses One and Two, When Daniel Reads the Prophecy of Jeremiah. It Says in Verse Two That He Understood by Books. The Number of the Years concerning Which the Word of the Lord Came to Jeremiah the Prophet, He Understood the Number of What Years Not Days.
Daniels Not Thinking about Daisy's Thinking about Years. So When We Come to the Prophecy That Says 77's Are Determined upon Thy People and Thy Holy City, Daniels Not Thinking about Seven Daisy's Thinking about Seven Years. You Will Also Discover That When You Understand That in the Mind of Daniel. When I Say the Mindset of Daniel in the Mind of Daniel. Was This Thought He Was Worrying about the End of the Captivity Which Is People Already Involved in Say Class. Why Were They in Captivity. You Know What We Will Look at This, but Let Me Read It to You. Second Chronicles 3621. Write It down and Look It up Later. Second Chronicles 3621 Gives the Reason Why the Jews Were in Captivity in Babylon. Not Just Because of Their Disobedience.
But Notice to Fulfill the Word of the Lord by the Mouth of Jeremiah until the Land Had Enjoyed Her What Sabbath's for As She Lay Desolate She Sabbath to Fulfill Three Score and 10 Years Now Listen to Me. The Reason God Sent the Jewish People into Babbling and Put Them under Captivity Was Because God Said I Want One Year Out Of Every Seven and the Jewish People Wouldn't Give It to. So Guess What God Took While They Were over and Babbling in Captivity.
You Know What Was Happening to the Land in Jerusalem Where the Jews Used To Live. It Was Getting Caught up on All the Sadness That Belong to God That Never Were Given to God When They Should've Been Written down in My Notes and If You Let Me Digress for Just a Moment. This Principle That Comes Out Of Our Study Friend You Better Give God What He Owns Because If You Don't He'll Take It.
Some of You Think That You Get by by Not Giving God What Belongs to Him in Terms of Your Giving. But If You Did the Computation from God's Viewpoint, You Might Discover That God's Already Getting It. You Just Don't Have the Privilege of Giving It to Not Have Hundreds of People Come to Me and Say Pastor You Know I Start Giving to God the Most Amazing Thing Happened. I Discovered I Could Live Just As Well on What Was Left and I've Told Some of Those People Course, the Reason for That Is You Just Start Giving to God Belong to Him and so He Didn't Have To Take It Away from You in the Old Testament Economy. The Jews Wouldn't Give God What Was His and so He Said Okay I'll Just Have To Take It with the People over in a Foreign Land and He Took from Them What Belong to Him. Now Settle That to Explain to You That in Daniel's Mind Was This Thought He Was Thinking and Seven's of Years in Multiples of Seven's and so When the Prophecy Came to Him That 70 Weeks Were Determined upon His People. Daniel Never Even Thought about Days He Thought about Years Will, There's Really No Good Place to Put a Bookmark in This Long Lesson but Will Have To Do It Right Here and Tomorrow Is a Little Bit More of the 70 Weeks of Daniel.
