ESPN’s Karl Ravech and Rich recap the MLB Home Run Derby including Albert Pujols’ memorable night, discuss why Juan Soto and the Nationals are likely to part ways and how much of a haul Washington could get for the young slugger, if the Yankees could be in the mix for Soto, and share their favorite memories of doing SportsCenter with Stuart Scott and Craig Kilborn.

Podcasts are our balance of podcast people lets up podcast people. So what a phone home run Derby last night right. I mean, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I I offer my kudos to those players who said you know what it's good to be 100 million and only put on my uniform and I'm in a go try and yank some baseballs out of dodger Stadium and not if your people on so you can start you know, I guess lifting weights in between at-bats to see some of that uniformity is these like squat squat he's swinging in squad and it was just a great mix of young and old. You got Albert pools there last night kind of like it was kind of like his daughter's wedding and everybody's kind of going in and asking for favors and wedding know that's what it was kind of like the only thing that was missing was him you are petting a cat while talking to the.

The undertaker looking for revenge and I mean he was the godfather is essentially what I'm saying last night and and you and I just loved how when he was done with his at-bat everybody came out and surrounded him and gave him some love and the only I'm getting goosebumps talking about this, that it just it, it reminded me and it's obviously different, but this would reminded me of when Ted Williams throughout the ceremonial first pitch of the 1999 All-Star game in Fenway Park.

The Knights of the all century team being introduced Kevin Costner emceeing I was hosting the ESPN radio coverage standing behind Carlton Fisk, who is receiving the first pitch from Ted Williams and I was staying there the microphone goosebumps on my arms and as soon as Ted Williams was done throwing that first pitch every single human being that was introduced from the all century all-time team and the current All-Stars are all lined up there in a constantly in a constellation of diamond around Ted Williams the just converged on Ted and I remember the public address announcer in Fenway Park, essentially saying after two minutes you know it. Can we clean the field to play the game and and that's what last night's moment without reports. Kind of reminded me of where everyone knows this could be the last time that he's added All-Star event with uniform on, you never know with him and you young and old around Albert pools former teammates and then I night gets dominated by two of the young stars of the game with respect to the polar bear who got bounced gets bounced by Julio Rodriguez of your Seattle Mariners and she's raking and Juan Soto is raking and the two of them meet in the final and it was awesome. Julio Rodriguez of the Seattle Mariners is okay 14 straight wins the Mariners have an immense kid shows up and he bombs 32 out and I'm thinking to myself, look, I know, youth serves, and I know kids don't know what they don't know but Newport Cory Seeger's dad stone, zoom in, and Corey Segars, Samaritan and I think it like for his first five out five of its first six out and it wasn't as you're watching you think he's not going fast enough right now can have it like his daddy's to pick up the pace and it's it's like a leisurely nice moment between father and son.

It's great and really big deal about the bad he was using he was using is really heavy and big bat.

You could see them choke up on it gets more pop but is not moving fast enough. That was just like hey were in the backyard replay gadget it.

It's kind of thing like you know and I'm not there yet, but I think you know dad's of college age kids they show up college and they start trying to go beer for beer with their kids and their friends and is disliking can't deny Camille to keep pace and you think you got it. Still, all the sudden you're just like spinning in the other kids throwing him back. That's what it felt like to me like you're not good. He still got it. Your terrific but you're going to get the kids here and Rodriguez finishes second. And by the way his his prize money for finishing second was $750,000 or $50,000 more than the minimum is currently making this year he made more money last night and hitting 81 home runs in his three at-bats than he did that he has any little year made sense. I wanted to participate exactly to supplement their income and Juan Soto gets $1 million for winning or in other words complete chump change of whatever's coming this young man 130 nothing less than what he turned out chump change.

Like literally couch cushion money for Juan Soto he made last night just bothering 53 moment or economical. It's only now he went thinking about tonight is like Brady yeah just over you have to go first invested cranking about setting a number that no one can reach but now it's Juan Soto top everybody have fun. Now it's Juan Soto time and now you know tonight's game of playing will have a nice night in Clayton Kershaw on the mound for the first pitch of the game and is not ceremonial. Everyone you don't kinda thought the Clayton Kershaw every year he is like a year-to-year planning and how much longer to get a beat. He is a legitimate starting pitcher of an All-Star game legit Ezekiel.

Obviously you can give the not if the tie goes to Kershaw when the games in Los Angeles, but this is a legit start and it's pretty easy to get the first pitch the first pitch thrown and it's all starting tonight is thrown by Clayton Kershaw Lovett great but once all the dust settles.

It's going to be about Juan Soto and where he is. He wind up and I don't know what's going about whatever All-Star break.

People maybe haven't. I cannot imagine general managers are taking any time off right. Not like there are people working phones or they are working internally. They are assuming they're doing whatever they're doing right now to figure out what package convey put together for this could it's going to be rich. I mean basically look at your farm system. Take a look at your top two prospects if not top three and say Viacom, DSI, all the plans that we had for you yeah you and later this year were doing to 2023 well down the run, 20, 24 we think and be ready by vanity beaded are expectations that will be great. Now you know what we will pay that nine 2023 because we got this kid coming up or yell at the 2024 free agent moment we we we we don't mean that because we got to get all those points flush them down the toilet every last one name and name a team name a team with a ton of money.

Name team and you know how I mean you get to sit here and think of your major league baseball owner even if you're sitting on your nest egg on the Orioles at the beginning opportunity here. Even with this kid.

I'm serious.

Orioles have a lot of good process. Don't spend money, you know they haven't spent my like that's interested and I don't yeah right rich nice truck went to either the top 100 prospects. I get that done. Even if you don't spend money. You've got to sit here and think it's 23. Even Yankee fans. I know some Yankee fans and you keep saying that you structurally Judges 30 we want to pay judge all that money or you want to pay all that money plus a little bit more on some matter B can little bit for some is 23 E. 23 and he's incredible and he is amazing and he is somebody that I don't know. Does he not want to play in Washington DC.

He says he does.

Do you have that soundbite if you don't mind Mike Hoskins. He says he does. He says I want to stay when he turned down 400 million over 15 years. That water is a 440. Let's not talk a lot, his agents evoking for 15 years is what Montserrat said about situation. I came here my whole life.

My career as a great way to whatever decision they make is going to walk up a base pay is here to play baseball as hard as I can made I don't know I have found that the mind said this is an weeks ago they were saying no.

The only thing thinking about people you know what they know. I feel it from the rights of beautiful here a few years ago we reviewed two years ago that man over there is a Met fan of the rich doesn't show it. We wouldn't even I would even look in the direction that will plans what you really care to spend money on ordering what we can bring Bernie made off back the dead get your money back. Given Juan Soto so what you know but now don't call me Bobby Axelrod, who owns the Mets. This is real try to tell you I told you months ago.

They have the prospects for night somewhere in the top 100 right. The Mets have the number two overall prospect of catcher Francisco Alvarez. Their number 20, number 52, number 87 all for those guys gone. And then what other current employer, would you be willing to part with two or three guys maybe to get Juan Soto is going to have to just estimate would you give a pharmacist yet.

This will give up to the ground. Honestly, every Met fan should say yes it is the grommet prospects for Soto yes a thousand times. Why would I thought why would I can't say healthy. But what exactly why would the why would the nationals take somebody was having trouble staying healthy.

That's all I think is put me in a non-look, I tried to tell you guys to three months ago. This is going to happen. I'll know I feel like there's a good chance that he ends up if it's not this year. The next Juan Soto sweepstakes has gone. Did you see Sterling Norte last night.

He was like his personal height man? I didn't let him like 4 feet moves like they had were electronically linked together and couldn't straight from Walmart to look great in Washington DC. Oh whoa whoa 00 to take return with a champ. Nationally, because again you know what in the Phillies Phillies will be on the door of everybody in the skillet. If the Yankees are knocking on the door and you know they have to even the Phillies.

I don't think have the profit Yankees got a knock on the door in that that the Yankees knock on the door. The Red Sox are knocking on the door. Everybody's not going to whatever is get a ticket time regularly every baseball team got to make this cultlike the rent you have to at least the Yankees have five of the top 72 prosperity, but do they have the money is good left pay and how you got the money you got it it somewhere. We know it goes a lot you can use who cares but just put it this way that the name of my next fantasy team will not be don't trade for Soto is open you had success with that. Short doors open to walk through it.

Carl Ravitch will walk through it. Next on this rich eyes and show he called the home run Derby last night.

We will talk to him about this.

Will Soto subject the home run Derby tonight's All-Star game. John Bruton finally finishing the Tigers if it finishes tired after not as a home run Derby again. Great idea and idea will discuss that a little bit more on this program but Carl Ravitch and on what would've been the 57th birthday of our longtime friend and colleague Stuart Scott so there will be lots to discuss with Carl when we come back here on this addition over the rich eyes and show back here on the rich doesn't show 844204, which numbered on the terrestrial radio network along with peacock and Sirius XM channel 85 and the Odyssey up in our podcast and so much more. Haven't spoken this man and him him way too long and I go back in the day with him. So there's so much to discuss with a man who is the voice of Sunday night baseball on ESPN and call the home run Derby and will be part of the ESPN coverage in advance of tonight's major league baseball All-Star game here in Los Angeles, California.

My friend Carl Ravitch of the Mercedes-Benz vans from 100 O'Reilly has it has been a minutes as they as they say, what was it like in person last night saying that: I would.

Having done this for a long time now through the you know the bright harpers of the Todd Frazier. It was a little different in the fact that Julio Rodriguez dominated the event.

He was the only guy got on those roles where you can't see 789 in a row. Nobody else did that googles was a great story but it was a great story because he's a legend and what if you went out there in the world on fire sure Vern Alonso didn't have good night. The energy was was unique in on you can do this better than anybody but there was there was a different energy than what we have seen another ballpark so I thought of it in Outlook.

It is always the a great event. Rodriguez shined last night so those that all the distractions around nobody was able to focus but I would pay relatively speaking was probably a little flatter than other Derby Street scene and through no fault of anybody's, but that your your your gonna be beholden to the participants then last night after Rodriguez and figure it out it what 55 homers between them in the first rise like this is going to be the most amazing Omar Gerber we've ever seen and it literally you're at the top of the roller coaster.

After those two guys hit and it kind of deadly went down after that. That was my impression to be in there. We get to this use of the evening and then obviously Juan Soto's future immediate and long-term. Let's talk about the OG in impulse wouldn't want a moment last night I was saying that you know obviously is only one Ted Williams, but when no Ted Williams throughout that ceremonial first pitch prior to the 99 All-Star game at Fenway Park in the all-time team along with the current All-Stars all converged on him that's that's what kind of felt like to see you in armor and surrounding pools last night after his first AB belt that was amazing what a moment I was. Carl will fit right there.

They were right up there datelined front the field and it started with the players they were the ones that hunt started to trickle back and I'm not mistaken we we went to a commercial became back in everybody And gone to both sides. Yeah, I certainly went back to Fenway Park and 99 and Ted Williams the golf cart granted discussing with the author to use you smell, you know, the snow comes out your best to follow loss etc. etc. it actually had that feel the other side of it was to his credit, you know, googles was willing to embrace it. He wasn't.

It wasn't soda, brushing it off like everybody go sit down the enjoying the moment and we will leave vanity SPN throughout his career. You were rare for all great part of it. The machine has been reduced a little bit in his in his age, but he's one of the greatest right-handed here is that we've ever seen, and will ever see and perceive the reference, but people like Manny Machado, etc. pretty vocal about the lack of attention that you think googles is getting its final year and Miguel Cabrera. That was one of those moments in and that was one of the moments when you watch the home run Derby last night. You'll remember what Al everybody treated Albert pools.

I assume tonight.

They may both get similar treatment.

It was really unique and it and it was unscripted that there was no choreography behind it realized we should go in and surround this guy and saluted him. He saw Soto was the one bowing down to them more than anyone else. Carl Ravitch Sunday night baseball voice and longtime voice baseball and also SportsCenter right here on the rich eyes and show on the night of the All-Star game Juan Soto get the million dollars for winning and that's chump change.

It's interesting that Rodriguez made more money last night and he's gonna make it as minimum here contract this year about what is the deal with soda water. I wire you know Washington seemingly on the verge of partway here where I bought multifaceted.

I think that there I think it was your offer. I think that the sale of the nationals is a big deal.

I think any prospective owner coming in would like to make sure that that stock is taking care of it like you can look at it from both sides is obviously one of the great young players in the game uniquely talented with his ability to recognize strikes and balls.

You can elevate the baseball but baseball. We know this from years is not an individual sport at some point you, you can't allow your franchise to have such a percentage of the salary be spent on one guy and but given where we are economically he's going to get for $500 million over whatever length of time. This contract goes micro hasn't been in the playoffs, let alone the World Series and use the unquestioned best baseball player on the planet. If Soto's been knocked down from him. Well, how much money do we commit to one player and be able to surround and are working to get you know what what the Marlins got when they let Miguel Cabrera go years ago in a couple of really good pictures and majorly ready players. Well I'll be better off and those are legitimate questions with God, and I know what you saw yesterday but Soto said Mayor answering questions and literally working over his left shoulder is God, or assist filtering the questions hearing what people are asking making sure that Soto is not Miss Deke Bess that was that was an interesting look. Yesterday's so I went by I look I see both sides of it. He still got a year in future years left so it unique and if you need to baseball that one guy was two years out of free agency is this turning down $440 million over 15 years. At the next two weeks.

He's the biggest story in baseball and is not close. So what do you think it'll take out we were just we open the show by saying that anybody was been you know planning for the future. As every general manager doesn't baseball can take a look at their what top 23 prospects and say Viacom deals right I mean would not be at or what what you think it would take at least to get him yeah I like the accomplish it. Cabrera I think that with two really good players and they took on the contractor, Don Correll Willis at the same time, I thought hard one to say because I don't think I'm not credit not to be no avoiding the question here and I'm not sure why it got to a place where two years removed and created stated this is even a conversation. But we really can expedite a deal for Juan Soto and it appears recorded to people that that I know, but only if spoken with even I casually get in the room feels that dollies don't like this is happening in the next two weeks has to do as much with who's been on the team as is the present.

Yeah, I think there were three majorly ready players now by Christmas really good at his job doesn't lose trades but this is a hard one to judge, and it will take three or four or five years to judge whether they did really well or where they got leased but you really really majorly ready players when a couple of prospects and if you start to ask whose imposition do that.

The Padres St. Louis Cardinals.

I think the bonds experience in San Francisco brings them into the picture. I think what Julio Rodriguez and where the mariners are now and where they're going is another possibility. And if I am going north on the richest owner is going to buy my guys Sandy Alderson as they look like they money isn't a factor. How much are we gonna somewhat cause us to get involved in this Juan Soto thing like that.

He may say were not doing that, but the grommet coming up for a new contract made baby you is that you say to Soto and the nationals we we have these players and they got a lot of players and we got an owner not the best part would be public, but I got an owner was willing to spend $500 million on this guy.

So let's make it happen. The challenges this is not your world is not a sign in great know that at the biggest challenge is not like them. I like the nationals since they will see what you willing to pay well will give them seven for $500 million okay will will sign them to that and then will make a deal that that's not going to happen, but I'm calling I'm certainly going to my guys and saying let's take money out of the equation which no one ever says, but he has the ability to do it. Let's see what we can work on Ravitch year in the rich eyes and show what you Brian Cashman like you got a team that is on fire.

You know, obviously July slipped a bit but still the lead is is insurmountable in the division. You got the Astro sitting there right behind you, though, and easily your best shot to win a World Series since 09. Do you and I know this is nuts.

But do you upset the apple cart for Juan Soto. Do you really do that or do you just go and target the needs that you have get that starting pitcher that I think they definitely need an extra bat but is is Juan Soto's the extra backup coming near me like I don't know do you do really well. I think that we grew up in the George Steinbrenner of course I grew up with the Yankee real hospital when George Steinbrenner owns it. Like all of the team on top note is three. The Yankees are going to be in on.

I personally don't think they do that like they got their own $500 million guided nail down these 30 Carl he started you know I mean like about it. There's no doubt about it and what we all know Yankee Stadium and a left-handed hitter. There's a lot of things a lot of things to like about that but I would fall back on one guided doesn't doesn't do it for me what the Yankees you have riches, they have all want. They have a whole bunch of prospecting one think Cashman is done the last two years is load up on prospects including a short stop there and they get a lot of a lot of good players when it comes to baseball, having having watched this stuff. There's two things that they cannot upset my applecart.

Every time we get around the draft and pray deadline get here organizations they were not trading our prospects, which I never understood because you were the ones that mind the prospect you found them. We just finished a draft.

There's a lot of prospects you can find more. I never quite got the team saying what we can't give he's untouchable you kidding me it's baseball this seven more of those guys we know want Soto 10 years ago we had barely known Julio Rodriguez two years ago how we doing now.

Once you know the best player in the game and one dominated the home run Derby felt prospect don't care me to move with regards to a player like Soto and the other one is that is the financial component got you know you you you have money all these teams all the teams could afford. I want Soto if they if they made that decision that the idea that we can't stand. We don't have the money to do that you do, then there are different different market sizes, but that's a choice you could make the Colorado Rockies to sign crisp lightweight has to feel after not giving know what our auto money where that might have felt, but I don't I don't see the Yankees as a realistic player but it's a two-year deal you. You can pray five prospects and you haven't been two years and then you run out of your you can certainly do that.

I don't see that, Ravitch year on the rich eyes and show a call before I let you go tonight for tonight's game.

It's been Stuart's 57th birthday today and I've got his daughters, Taylor and Sydney in studio in our number two organelle have some ice cream and share some memories and Holcomb talk about his Memorial fund that's in association with stand on the same soccer sideline when our kids will place at night tell what was that like what was that like was what was how is how astute is a socket I was is like he was not like Craig Wingo who you know very well was one of those guys when He was playing football or or other sports he would run up and down the sideline you with was more reserved kind of watched you watch with great pride. He loved the athleticism of the girls, but he was less animated than others on the sideline barefoot. There was not a lot of yeah every kick every group because a bad age. You know when there are six players on each side 12 around the soccer ball. There's not a lot of you say was like a sports in a commercial where he's rejecting the kids come in at the rack on him like crazy on a timer and that a lot of thought about you don't do it that way. You get a lot of what your memory of doing shows would still Carl back in the day. Well memory of doing shows with a lot of those guys was there was there was a slight level of all in and watching you know Olbermann and Patrick and Stu because you're kind of your kinda looking at individual you know that everybody is an individual doing their own thing right great tagteam stuff going on but does a lot of individual. He was a unique actor and there's no doubt about that. He was such a wonderful actor like I was watching a play from literally 2 feet away.

My gosh look at what this guys doing look at how he does the highlight. I loved watching the bent over the debt hold up a shot sheet you have one. I am a shut one eye watching the video and he was terrific.

I was lots. I do that to an end to the things that I would watch him do call was he would when he would receive the shot sheet. Again, it's for the for those may not know you get get paperwork and and it's the kind of like line by line they give you basically let you know what the situation is and what the result is an like a it's two men on and is a three run homer and things like that is, he wouldn't get that shot sheet in the commercial break Carl and then he would know where he could use his catchphrases and he would write them down on the shot sheet and he and I just remembered he would always spell out booyah install but we always be overloaded live OW that's how he would spell it. Booyah that's how it would spell it on his shot sheets and he would nail it. He would nail every time every single time.

And you're right, he would bend over because you know he had. He had poor eyesight as well. You know I'm so in he would always need though the lights up. It was a party man every time every single time he did it. You know, so he would've been 57 to Anna when I had killer in studio just a couple weeks ago I had your tailbone here as well.

That's the feel-good remember brewing brewing lightning. Remember that uncle you let go.let God yeah well we all have that neighborhood that had that ranking member you walk down the street with your over your shoulder and that guy would want to bear.the Everett there was there was the random that's what he knows Steve Anderson were going to work on the curtain back was in charge of. After about a week.

I walked into Anderson's office and I said I'm sorry I don't get any of it.

None of the things that you thought you got the spiderweb there's up there's a pool working with this thing this thing a little more. Wonderful credit Dave Anderson said Carl, I hear you. Be patient and in about a month. I was the straight man is unique actor.

It really worked really really bad credit that was a foreign language. He was speaking itself just so you where he still has a Minnesota Timberwolves fixation in case you're wondering, and on occasion he would glance at the screen and worried that the pants color that he was wearing was not being accurately portrayed by the color on the screen is concerned about its concerns come across gold buckle and he would talk so narrowly over a man who I'm sorry for direct this is a great time in our lives when it was Linda work better with an appointment viewing showing you and he knew he could now are all for a major phases of art is amazing. Yes, do it again would've been 57 today. I just think that I don't just a memory lane with great to listen to you.

Well done Rick Johnson 9.5 ago the desert. Crazy thing would be is if it was Jimmy grappling would be like 1010 I have been the same nine and 9 1/2 be the same team that almost made the soup couple playing games last year, trailing the only one thing is a problem for defenses he's being used wrong. All he's got to know his playbook. Be confident see it, rip it and then all this matchpoint stuff no one can know what was going to and he's can jam it down people's throats red zone offense is going to be vastly improved the confidence to buy it.
