2-time Super Bowl champion and current Steelers sideline reporter Max Starks tells guest host Ryan Leaf why Mitchell Trubisky has the early lead over Mason Rudolph and rookie Kenny Pickett in Pittsburgh’s QB competition, what Mike Tomlin’s expectations are for his team this season in what should be a very competitive AFC North against the Ravens, Bengals and Browns, how he reacted to the Heinze Field name change to Acrisure Stadium, how the Rooney family’s ownership has been able to maintain nearly a half-century of consistent winning and more.

Ryan and the guys discuss their sports fandom and how geography and parents play a huge rule on which teams we root for, and debate how much stock NFL fans should put in those great and not-so-great Twitter videos of their favorite teams’ training camp practices and scrimmages.

Ryan revisits his 2021 NFL Draft breakdown where he thoroughly hammered the Bengals for taking WR Ja’Marr Chase over OT Penei Sewell with their 1st round pick.

I shall studio for the Lord shall not now shall rightly fear filling in for Rich alongside TJ Jefferson to focus Brockman like to bring our next guest a big fan of his homework together a bit with him but really admire his is run as a two-time Super Bowl champion with the Pittsburgh Steelers. My team right grown-up protecting big Ben Roethlisberger during his tenure. Now an analyst for Sirius XM as well as the sideline reporter for the pits was to show Max Starks Maxwell, Michelle, but I don't do a good ride. Always good to be back on their it is funded be with you to so Mike Tomlin steps like today announces that Mitchell Stravinsky, who was signed in the off-season is going to get the first preseason start. I know this doesn't necessarily mean anything but how are you reading the tea leaves there and what have you seen a practice with this quarterback competition.

Well, you know, we are in the right starter for the auger lion share of the number one and grill so no surprise there and start dictating that even though Mike I will tell you week mandated that I gave you chart you have done the you got progressively better start To where were at today.

Now this afternoon about about half an hour 45 minutes from now on the field have another padded practice practice before the game and mixture you can see where making an appeal to the wide receiver to where he can put the ball go out there and make a competitive And work down the field.

He's doing a better job of that makes Rudolph you know you been in the system yet a year like up but even after the most accurate passer and often it's just I think with athleticism what MacInnis trying to do yet you shine in those moments a lot of rollout off platform type of rose on the run.

He felt that curative passing from the pocket that better quarterback McKinney Pickett is coming along again birthday yesterday and practice passing the lecture with the receiver, but you can see there's still some time that needed so for this competition. I made it a pretty good competition really comes down to tenant to mention that makes Rudolph starting to pick up the good guy that wrote a beautiful paintball. He is a great decision that he's making but still come in a little bit slower and I'm sure the coaches would like especially when you talk about the parking lot like lookup and I think you've done a good job handling that he does better when he looked to but I think is right now to work right now and I competition aspect of the coaching staff and maybe organization are they you know what they rather have Kenny pick it kind of developed this season rather than real economy, pushing one of those two others for our real starting role because of what it may look like as a rookie. Once that once the teams position around where Kenny Pickett dropped in the first round sit this season. Why think you want anything to write you got it on the right side of the building moving to the left side of the building after all. The same complex. But we can look at. I think you'd rather have kidney the be a God who can watch. I think you think of like Philip Rivers right you think of Aaron Rodgers you think of a lot of quarterback who sat for year and then gone on to just have tremendous good. I think from that perspective you would rather have Kenny fit you know now been Robert was going to fit with an injury pushed into the starter. I think they like the same thing on the come out name him a week. One starter to bring in Mr. Neil what's the point in refining makes Rudolph to come and glorify out the water. So I think it was they were. It's a process of maturation and I think they would rather see him sit for year and let the other to duke it out and leave the helm for year and then come next your training camp. Then we make the transition really giving Kenny a sense of you know he's going into a position more mature way to take the reins as a team is also ready to receive them. So this is the first Max Starks stealer sideline reporter two-time Super Bowl champion offense alignment for the Pittsburgh Steelers. This is the first Right in a long long time that Ben Roethlisberger hasn't been at the helm at the quarterback position. What's the leadership qualities he had all the things that go into to have stability at the quarterback position. What what's it been like have guys on the defensive side of football have all others have to have to step up what's it been like without big Ben, I'm not there this year for Clear that you're missing the true quarterback leader on the squad right I guided when you can look to offense or the defense would look to been when they needed help for Derrida pension Ben was that you know what my back was go ahead and less combat. We need help working out.

I think now you're looking at it and it becomes more of leadership by committee because your Pam Hayward Peter Watt they got the defense on lot. Mika is another leader on that depot so you have a tribal leadership on the depot decidable when you call this office was a lot younger crew. Now there's some veterans on the squad. You look at James Dale make a call together brought over free agency you are receiving core you're looking to guide like Chase Claypool like Beyoncé Johnson who are who are the backbone to the printer but you don't see multiple numbers a year behind like 70 year receiver and then you look at running back will meet not hear the clear clubhouse leader, but you rookie this time last year that fire move on to the Bermuda rookie last year. So when you're looking around it turned to Mr. Bishop to gain the trust of the P and you know that Ryan is a quarterback when you have to be able step in at huddle and get that competent from them and he's earning it and I think you are not first right come Saturday when he starts out with the one they go on board after stadium, but at the same there is in the clear guidance like the standout that's been here for once, I think that what is there and also that trust right trusted Ben Rothberg could bring you back late in the game, you know, we don't have that yet we haven't done it yet.

They haven't really had that practice of going to a game being down and looking to a guy like Sabin to come and pull you out of out of the fire. When things get tight, but they will develop it.

But right now that's what we are looking at is more of a committee and got leaning on each other and having a collective voice versus one person for the fee you can argue that the AFC North is one of the most competitive divisions in all football right right up there with the AFC West on this season. Normally it's been really Pittsburgh and Baltimore, but Cleveland over the last few years in Cincinnati. Of course after last year have reemerged in this conversation right and probably one of the most unknown situations is what what what happens in Pittsburgh what one of the expectations for this team. My, of course, never having a losing season as a head coach in Pittsburgh. What are the expectations for this team heading into this preseason. I think the expectation that forward of the first thing the first step you know at this point in the year preseason. It's a bunch of guys trying to become a team yet 90 trying to become 53 so the biggest thing you're taking a step forward. You have an opportunity, not wasting that opportunity to shine bright on the national stage when the game televised that you get to going to get somebody that you don't have to walk in the locker room of the dorm room afterward. Explain yourself why you got hit. I think this is the first opportunity, but I think for the use of the whole. You look globally at what expectation available level is agape or compete and be competitive this year.

Just because that is not a quarterback you have that you have a great defense coming back and really researching last year. What was a down year from the right Rob to the rushing yards per game. Give it up. They were last week, but you also know that with injuries in every out that group would help your still five years in the road leading the league in sacks year in and year out, so we know they can correctly situation.

The big question that often can you get off to a fast start last year 37 first quarter points Ryan in 17 games, 37 total not in not want that is that that that puts your defense is a very stressful situation so the big thing to come out prove that you can get off to a faster crew because Matt can often is explosive and he could put points on the board that could be the first thing that the first update they really want to connect for the defense is shoring up that run defense showing that a team like Seattle coming and committed to running the ball to stop them from running the football. Does the first thing I'm looking forward to Saturday. Talking with Max Starks here on the Mercedes-Benz sandstone lines, two-time Super Bowl champion with the Pittsburgh Steelers and all season which something very near and dear to your heart than the name of the stadium that you were you played your entire career in gets it gets a new facelift. What I mean.

There was kind of vile response to it it it is part of what the business world is now, but what was your take away when the when the change when away from Heinz Field. I record a lot of what I'm feeling more and what is accurate nor inaccurate. And why are they coming in and ruining a Pittsburgh tradition because you know you have a Heinz ketchup factory that literally right on the north side of things out of the stadium, you still see the more like the smokestacks wrote from the factory still standing out like loss of everything else but that's just as Pittsburgh it get and so to see the ketchup bottle being being lowered.

I watched the video to be lowered from the end zone because often we had a Heinz red zone. The ketchup bottle still report to the screen is a cool moment, but now afford to be accurate shortening back the growth and that's where we are from the business side of the NFL. If there's an opportunity for organizations to make money to continue to build their brand you will you see the Denver Broncos going for the amount of money for civilian dollars. Yet the one okay. What can we do to maximize our profit well so that we could stay viable and continue to grow this game and also grow the arm of the NFL starter philanthropic efforts and interest as well as his growing this game internationally got yet to build the warchest right before you want to go out and conquer across the ocean so I think that's just the nature what it is a natural thing will get used to saying accurate sure stadium instead of Heinz Field. Over time, but I don't want things where you see a little bit and establish a conical way and it becomes something new and hopefully tradition.

For whatever quarterback Pickett Stravinsky, Rudolph negative on your own name and had all the Heinz Field record now. See if you can sure stadium records.

I like you talk about legacy in history right I Pittsburgh Steelers fan right gone to Montana.

We didn't have a probe team anywhere so we had relatives in Pittsburgh and they would send along the, the iron beer cans with the team. The team picture on it and I love the black and yellow and Terry Bradshaw and I've watched it over time. And what's been so impressive about this organization and you can speak firsthand this is what the really family has been able to do right three head coaches in and in the in the timeframe. I've been alive and been a Steelers fan.

I mean the consistency, the winning the pedigree and the tradition's is unparalleled.

I believe in this in this league speak to that a little bit what the Rooney family has done in the tradition and history of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Well we all know you know the year of 1970 really, you have a echo merger, but you have something else you have important power and a guy by the name of Joe Greene distracted and and from that point forward, we know that the origin of what we know the Steelers to be a new standard with that we can go back into the 60s in the 50s and the for the quarter were founded in 1933 but a checkered past right of the year. The they formed during World War II with a former Philadelphia became fecal, you know that their lives, but 70 is a defining moment where you hire Chuck no year before and that he is a first draft class and then we know what the 70s are that that is Steelers decade. We are talking about decades for NFL team that was unequivocally and from there a standard set in the standard was going to be tougher than everybody else out there were going to play a physical brand of football and that has transcended that's working that belief. Think about the Steelers whether Steelers fan or not you think Pittsburgh will be a rough game that could be physical altercation when when you step in that they do when they come into our and you knew your gonna feel it the next week I think that's kind of what permeated it started with the steel curtain is carried on today and that's where things I think about it. What makes it special and and and starts with the steadiness at the top. The Rooney name has been associated with leaving the franchise since its inception and to be passed down from father to son and Kamal father to son again. It is something that you'll take for granted and is my first year coming back to training camp attired last year, becoming in the sideline. They have a great touch, okay, passed away and and I was that if I could come in and replace with that we come in and sift with the broadcast. You can't replace touch but you don't, it being around the guys being here saying this is what before coated 54 straight years. Work training camp withheld your literal PA at St. Vincent College.

So every Hall of Famer that we know in the modern era has started here on the same exact feel that we practice on a – the proving ground right past the forge before you can make steel you come out here to become a team that then goes down the Pittsburgh and performed on every Sunday and every other football day and I think that that's an important thing the Rooney's are here you see them everyday mysteries of the lunchroom earlier and you see everybody around this organization. Just embrace it coast, and had a conversation with him. You know, in the dorms. Everybody is available in everybody's growing I think that's something we don't get a lot of places you know how I had I had the fortunate opportunity to go to San Diego and I went to St. Louis and another thing about that LA would like to know but it's a different sentence and you see when the older organization that's been passed down through the history of the NFL and over five decades plus of security. It makes it crazy to think three head coaches because of the brown dog the last six years and if you think of the dealers, 1970 really had three total head coaches in the current one is on the 15th see that he's never had a losing season. To this point he has something to the set and that's just tremendous all of them have Super Bowl victory.

All coaches have Super Bowl victory under their belt and just goes to show that the standard that they created is just something that you know when you get here somewhere special well I know I know why I love them for so long and and this will be for this to be another great year for me to follow my team and am so happy that you're part of it this year and will be my first call when I on some insight on what's going on there in Pittsburgh next are certainly things are doing is putting grandpa and grandma arrived here. Insert already. Max Starks, former two-time Super Bowl champion there in Pittsburgh. Now there sideline reporter. This interest me. You talk about TJ and in his love for the Dallas Cowboys. You know the patriots on your and Chris Brockman to what what your favorite football team red. The ramps I had never editing some ramps. I took the man's arm when I paid enough for my season tickets okay trimaran sky now okay so now we know the origin of love how you how you become a fan is about money from another's right so tell me how how Dallas became your team will you know I grew up in the middle of Pennsylvania so I was surrounded by Steelers fans. My whole family still country, but one of my earliest memories and I don't remember the game. I just remember being a baby probably sitting in front of the TV. I can remember Jackie Smith dropping the touchdown pass in like Super Bowl C 12 or something. I don't know. I obviously had to go back when I was older and we watched it. I think it was really Tony Dorsett. I kind of figured that out. He I need Tony Dorsett to go in the pit and he became a cowboy and I like for whatever reason likes and how you remember Tony Dorsett from pit but I just remember it's me and my mom try to piece it together once that she was like you liked him. He played for the Cowboys so you know, but I grew up around sealers.

Like I said, still country Steelers fans.

I didn't dislike Steelers as did like Steeler fans.

As I was surrounded maybe that maybe I am not found a pretty frequently about Steelers fans to fashion with passion and what and they found out that I was a Steelers fan and now I live there like they're not happy with me that I'm a Steelers fan like you don't want to part of this already down my judgment, it will move forward is idling.

A lot of people knew him. Steelers fans I can talk about it right until I started doing radio and things like that. I didn't know until like last year you brought it up, and how could I not happy that I'm a Steelers fan. We don't need you to consider for longer than most of them probably probably on the check themselves. Who knows what else. Alright Mr. Brockman why why the patriots when did that become one of that happening. So families are winning championships are what tell me. Well now, not really.

I mean like my hat, my dad, my mom's family from Pennsylvania so my dad actually died. Steelers fan so you know I would find with the Steelers back in the day and then I was on the West Coast as a kid I like watching the 49ers but then we moved to Maine when I was 12, so 1993 Drew Bledsoe gets drafted so I was kind of a bore with the patriots starting back good time to get it while you state court about coming to the home that's right, he's a pretty good one. I used to have a Drew Bledsoe poster in my room when I was in Washington state. It was posted in May that like 10 different pictures of him as a 10 reasons why Drew Bledsoe will kick your butt. Megan froze and showed him lifting weights and doing things like that awesome like that was you know he was. It was definitely a hero. My son is like nine or 10. I like the way big Oakland A's fan I want is a Conseco and then we moved to Maine. I just kind it was like I adopted all the boss is funny to hear some some of the stories around you know, you know, making shifts and changes growing up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area you on the West Coast and forth like for me like there was nothing else right there was the University of Montana and then was Montana State University was the two really were greatest or you are bobcat. My dad and on the Montana State. My dad taking me to games I love the colors. The bobcats war right. They were like blue and golden.

There was a guy named Kelly Bradley who was a quarterback and they went on one national championship like 1984 I believe, and Dave Arnold was the head coach who don't want to recruit me to Miami ties in this my dad and I fell in love with the bobcats that they were my college team right they were my college team in and then you grow up and grow older and you start to realize that you have a chance to go to college somewhere to play sport with the professional aspect of all those things, like in Montana. There was nothing so there was DBS and WGN were on TV in that state razor because I was either to be appraiser comes and I wasn't I'd I don't know why I didn't know fall on the side of Sarah Tiana right, but I I I fell in love with Ryan Samberg course right. Who wouldn't thought I was can a girl play shortstop for the Cubs and turn to with Ryan Samberg mean the salmon. John Dunstan did a pretty good job given that hock hundred thousand dollars under Dawson yes yes more grace Greg Maddux when he started out right. It really comes on a brave Sarah Tiana if you're listening to this and so those in the Pittsburgh Steelers. Our my football team, you know, I think my dad tried to get me into the Vikings my debts from okay he was a Viking's twins fan like you know II remember the Kirby pocket can perfect days in the Homer hankies and all that stuff and I grew up all that I doubt was a Boston Celtics man okay I grew up Los Angeles Lakers sex. I want the kind of focus my my dad and I ultimately became a Seattle Supersonics fan because of Gary Payton and accruing and then I was little bit later so those are some shifts and changes, but early on I was like diehard Cubs Steelers over the two had that were in the initial ones and haven't changed so it's been a good ride with some things worked out I was the other right. But you finally got God's rings. Like I told you about that house just a miserable experience. Of course I got there to blow it and I said no faith. The night game seven. I like screaming and yelling in my my wife looked at me like a cool mind with things where you expect bad things happen to the Mets condition to kind of feel that it's not the Mets necessarily most of the clippers commissioners yeah that's it feel like bad things to Mets fans that I have in my life. They just expect the Mets to blow like you're still not buying all I'm I'm I'm waiting on it because I'm telling you, I'm feeling something I've been so since I team. This team is to just get a tingle.

This team is different man. This is not the same Mets quiet and by the way, we've never been able to rule out shares are drawn back to back so this is another thing I was talking about MVP odds at some point because I think it's time that we put some respect on Pete Alonso's name for National League and the way he's carrying this open carry the squad. I know Goldschmidt's favorite rate right now but Pete Alonso is falling like processing people on Austin Riley and Freddie Freeman to interested in understanding that moving the best record in the in the league.

Now that the Dodgers were taken too much.

The whole year like put some respect on the polar bear right, if it is been amazing. I'm excited to get out out East and in and check these games out sediment take the rest of the year when I get out there and look into a little Mets this again this is just a start and how much you want to let you in the bentonite and I appreciate that I needed to let me on the bandwagon right when I got a break by we had Jets news we come back I just come back here on the rich eyes and Sean finally fell in a French will be right back. If not that that team's number is numbers and crazy that team mean Joe Greene, Jack Hamm, Jack Lambert in a Rocky Bleier Mill blonde. All those guys I often side when I really started getting the Steelers so at the end of that run when I would like remember was like. And we said number 83 Fermina Brady three was Lewis lips yeah yeah loose lips sink ships. As I remember how and Mark Malone's quarterback after Bobby Brister. Those were kind of my own through some dark days there were little bit yeah you know before before Cowher got in there at the end of the chuck know where one side, TJ Jefferson, Michael, to focus Brockman you got some think it's breaking news out of New York around the McKay Becton situate. Yeah, what would you bring this dramatic production value. Well done. I thought this really the week when McKay Becton went down the knee injury, ending his season for the second year in a row, five time probable tackle Duane Brown siding with the Jets and he's gonna take over at that left tackle spot to protect Zach Wilson as disappointed as Jets fans were this week when this news came. You have to feel little bit lifted up with the great All-Pro Duane Brown now making appears nice. He's aged premises. Older people in all 17 games a year ago right so so you know let's see what I mean if you're if you're just as you feel pretty good about who was stepping in to take on this role right to your deal for Duane Brown does does is it meaningful that that word this far along camp is common in learning the offense, or is this something as a right tackle.

He's got a pretty good hold on everything is gonna make it make it a pretty seamless transition. Yeah, I think you guys had the type of career that he's had a long career been super super high level of on several teams he's able to come in their plug-and-play mercenary. He knows what to do. He's going to protect Zach Wilson at all costs and it's go time so that's good news for the just because I'm see was in Becton. That's a pretty big it's a pretty big piece to fall their way able to get Duane Brown to fill in Jets fans got a feel good about that out. Even though I think they do for us as low as I may have felt when news broke couple days ago where the hearing this news. I mean this was always something on the rise in my Duane Brown was at the green and white game the other day. Been there all weekend visiting the team so kind of felt like something was imminent and there able to get done for to your deal so Zach Wilson had a nice quick go viral yesterday you guys see that the side arm past the home is looking throw that he hit that was Eliza Moore that he had a minister who is driving yeah look pretty good.

Nice nice opposite of the 2 o'clock that when rally yesterday. Have him throwing like a 40 yard out the waddling dock with 5 yards to nobody but you know I will say training camp is looked incredibly good against the box defense in the red zone to as to asthma. Also, scholar Thompson, so I don't know whether you would scholar Thompson rookie quarterback out of Kansas state. He threw three touchdowns this morning. Apparently, so they had their way with the box now will save me and my correct and in assuming that there their joint practices leads into a preseason game between the two. Usually that's the case, let me just double check.

Usually that's a case where teams will jointly practice together right before they played again when they end up playing each other. Yet box and dolphins play on Saturday night so no you like to see it play out on on the practice field. See college's stock do you take I think it's awesome I love it. The whole live tweeting and live video of these joint practices of everything that's going on in training camp.

You even like OTA's like a guy with 11 for 13 through two pics it's it's April. Yeah, I think that stuff is graded pretty much meaningless.

But this time a year. How much stock are you taking in the sum of the seven on seven numbers that come out the videos that we see the clips that kinda go viral. How much do they mean to you in the grand scheme of things were a month away from the seasons right there there there is no relevance in it for me because was practice for is to try new things is to try things out is to learn so I got so mad I don't want I don't want just a new cycle over the entirety of training camp in a negative about something right. I'm I want to see flashes and things like that and see that your learning and making them make the same mistakes again because this is what the opportunities are for you.

Make those but I don't take too much in to consideration because you know defenses are to be completely different once the season starts and I I better than anybody can test that you know my my preseason skills are you know they rank up there. There is a preseason Hall of Fame preseason. I'm a different kind of bust in that right.

But when the regular season starts right.

It is defensive coordinator's are amazing and that leak they are as good as you did in terms of how they prepare especially for rookie quarterbacks guys who are learning a new system.

Things like that so you what you want. Hopefully from your defensive coordinator on your team is that they're given in the hardest most difficult looks to prepare for. That's the defense of court's job is to get the defense ready. Of course, and then make a quarterback ready for what they're about to receive the season and when the season kicks off that same vein, and we were content yesterday about the patriots like should me and other New England fans be freaking out about all that kind of daily tweets about the offense of struggling in this that now Mac Jones and a lot of the starters are not playing tonight leg is that a big deal. Should we kind of freak out about that or you were still a month away. Let's just give it time. I think this was still a month away. Give time let them play some preseason games also if Bill Belichick whose arguing the greatest NFL coach ever right it. If he doesn't seem to concerned right if he's willing to keep these guys out because got to keep healthy right right think you might have a better understanding than any of us. I don't like the fact that it's it's been bad about talked about all through So far. I will say this once something happens and in a in a stone starts rolling downhill and gathering loss. Like I mean it's it becomes like a freight train. Sometimes I like it. Then.net is just hyperbole and assist – – – I mean last year this time Jamar Chase was the worst pick in the world because it had taken him under the ball. Amazing TJ.

I regularly forgot about that. Jason catch can't catch. He's dropping passes gloves no gloves hands. Whatever. And then the dudes like the place in the last game of the season offense rookie of the year every ball to steer so good I mean. So let's you know let's just remember, if it if you're looking for anything, you know. And this is not just self-deprecation but just you know. Check out the Riley stats in the preseason right you know I think we went to see my rookie year.

I think maybe one foreknown the preseason now so I beat Steve Young Dan Marino and the preseason. I maybe not. Dan Marino, I think we played Jake Plummer, Steve Young, Jake Plummer. When we go on the road my rookie year. Think we went to see her home against that was that was in the regular season that we were the preseason your home against St. Louis. Todd light never taught light as a safety there ran a touchdown. Maybe Minnesota and went to Minnesota here is maybe my four preseason games in 1998 I can find I can't find my life. I had been hidden until when people start to think when people are really concerned. Remember I only visible playwright.

I just bring out the preseason stats that Chris and I will see about this yesterday I was driving right said about you Ryan in something about you know you did your podcast bust right and people loved to throw around a bus word to Ashley to date feel you know their careers turned out the way it was expected, but no one ever really takes into consideration the amount of work it took for evening to that point. So there's a bunch of people out here right through my see you JaMarcus Russell anyone you know Greg Oden people whose careers didn't pan out for various reasons they want to call them a bus, but not even giving credit to what it took to get to that point like you are better then 120% of the people of anyone who ever use that word to describe you write all these guys who may not turned out to be great as good as we thought they would be EP got it still to some type of respect to what it takes to get to that level. It's not easy playing quarterback is hard making a professional sport is hard to get to that point should be celebrated and it will always want to kinda knock people down the peg or two because it didn't turn out the way that we thought it yeah it was and I think for the longest time I was beat over the head by it so much that I forgot to recognize that it is Chris to be the number two pick in the NFL draft dog wasn't number one and number two pick like no IIII think there's been a I think first off calling that the podcast that I think is kind of ingenious seats would only take ownership of that order should have it to, but, like when Brian Bosworth back in the day you know things are going sideways and he started selling the boss sucks T-shirts outside the stadium and made a bunch of money off it right.

Never knew that it it's it's it's kind of like that and I take the time to figure that out like yeah yeah I mean I think most people are either and I didn't realize this, like most people are either NFL fans are called football fencers. It's rare for for a real mixture to lie, unicorn anatomy, I love them both and I know about them both and invested in both but a lot of people are either NFL fans or college fan so when my name is talked about. If your NFL fan.

That dude is terrible. That dude doesn't know how to play quarterback like we were talking about all watching hard knocks last night in the motivation factor of the head coach right a lot of the feedback from people like you know you Ryan leaf was the least motivated person ever right and that's not true. As an NFL fan. Maybe they look at that and go all like to do wasn't successful. Must've been always sings where a two-year college football fan, you're like that do maybe one of the best quarterback simply called football and so it's interesting to see the divide there and how you consume your football product and I think the longest time. The only thing I identify with was his failed NFL quarterback.

So I bought into it right and I think did a huge part of how it affected my mental state where I went.

Ultimately, you know I had.

There was trauma probably reminded that I wanted to be successful. Are you kidding me. I want to be the best quarterback to ever play and I expected to be, you know, circumstances are what they are.

You know when when things got tough. I can cut it and there are a lot of people can, but I did it a very public level right on it in a crash and burn in front of everybody and I was draft along are you really greatest quarterback to ever play in Peyton Manning and and and the way I crashed and burned.

I think you know and then what happened after my career right away. I continue down that path. So I understand it it's it's nonsense you know if the word bust is a is defined. The definition should read individual had a ton of expectation was drafted very high and did not meet those expectations.

That's I guess that's where you could you could define the word but the word is been so is become such a toxic word right that you use it as a slight like you know this is a punch to your gut when in reality it doesn't have that much meaning because lot of expectation on me. Of course, didn't live up to those expectations, and therefore that word is attached is a mean I was about football player does me.

I didn't work hard doesn't mean that I wasn't interested in being great and I just didn't have the success that people assumed I would have.

So I get it. Mike just whispered in my ear there that the two row games that year and how did I forget this my rookie year. We went to Minneapolis. Peyton went on the premises in Brockton, 33 to 3.

I think that you know we beats the Rams at home. We beat the 49ers at home and then we went on the road to Indianapolis and Minnesota that was my rookie year. I can remember to Minnesota now because my family has a bunch of relatives in Minnesota night and I have so many people there and so will little recap of the root rookie preseason Riley matters. I will be come back. I want to revisit some of our draft day analysis why host the show and talk about it a little bit. I come to bear on the right sizes. I'm finally feeling for it back. Welcome back to the rich eyes, and shall Riley fear filling in for Rich alongside TJ Jefferson Michael Del Teufel and Chris Brockman. Alright, so an interesting idea to me a couple days ago looking back it.

I posted the draft a coverage here in the rich eyes over the last two years, and when some of the decisions were made at the time and in and whether or not I felt like they were the right choices made.

I think we pulled a few from two drafts ago around a few players that I thought would the date they may have may have made a bad choice. I wasn't big on the wide receivers rate I 5 foot. I'm willing to take a few gel here with with the wide receivers because of where I saw the market go where the market went this year so if you can get one in the first round and get them on a rookie contract that, like the time I'm all in. Will see if it works out for you in terms of the bag. Now the running backs in the first round. I still don't get not to hear such pretty darn good guys really really good.

Really good. But guess what that team needed to build the offense align right. I think they can find a Ronnie I think you like I can without a running back later in the draft and did better up front and that would've been different. For this, not only for the quarterback but also run with the bombing not you ran his head into the back of their their backs a ton last year he just carries the half touches the house like a mountain a lot hello get your number right so once 500 this year. Writing: a few weeks ago we like grow you don't know ye, you really don't hundred and seven carries and 74 catches.

That's why quick math 381 total touches last year, while big number for rookie so I mean I mean the investing first-round draft pick in that it sounds good because of the matter touches and importance to the offense. He was what whether that team would've had any success without him made that that may be the difference maker in and whether my just my my analysis on that. Was I just I died I would not invest a first-round pick and running backs. That's just that's just how I as a general manager go about their business.

So the shows back up there again. I want to take a look at the Devante Smith one.

I thought he was. I thought he came along pretty well after he what he did have the impact would say Jamar chasing Jill and waddled it but I did get the playoffs right to do something that that Miami wasn't able to do. I like both those bars. I would argue this and that and people can come back to me on on the Jamar Chase what if the nice tools on the offense of line does there and I'll get the quarterback on the final play of the Super Bowl and out the pace was on the line and make the Super Bowl.

That's the bigger question Jamar Chase is in on that team last year say no.

I would argue that that that they were right right so this is like pigeonholing one picking one aspect of it.

You rather have been a school and then whatever or would you rather have Jamar Chase and in the way they rebuilt the offense of line this past off-season. I think we all choose the latter type that yeah with. With hindsight seeing how great Jamar Chase is right, and also he took the guard they took Jackson Carmen in the second round with the second pick last year, so they did follow that up with a guard right after they took Chase.

I agree, but I think as we seen and were in season, the right receivers who got paid this year Depot Samuel and Ajay Brown dizygotic to the second round.

Write things like that. There could've been a wide receiver for Cincinnati in the second round and I could have placeable in the first right and maybe any Job or as a catalyst know not to take charge, Chase exceptional player Joe Burrell is the straw that stirs the drink for sure but yeah I completely flip my script on terms of where you go wide receiver in the first row now because the rookie contract and what we saw this off-season terms what the market became like that it I can't believe the amount of money is being spent on some these wide receivers so if you can find in the first round to see what the see again what Tennessee does what Kansas City does, and what Green Bay does issue because they let they let the star receiver go for big money, and went and tried to invest in the draft so we'll see.

I would come back to speak with Rick's route all about the Tampa Bay situation and Tom Brady was gone down in South Florida. We come back another thing you spoke about nudging should the Steelers have gone offense will use the 24th pick another lineman lineman didn't get drafted until the 37th pick after him, so maybe they just simply want the best player available right is this a lot of pics between you know lineman or so. Maybe they just nobody was worthy of that that first-round great first-round is so interesting to me because of how important it's become right so I think in that instance with what they were to be able to do with the running back position and how he contributed I feel like they could've found that somewhere else and what they needed was an offense align Mensa to come to come in and bolster that offense align so I I'm still of the mindset I'm really as a fan.

I'm really thrilled that we got Nancy Harrison and how great of a play area right, that's that's big time for me but Travis ATM take a course of an urban Meyer get Trevor Lawrence and Travis ATN I long-term safety and apparently you're gonna love them too for your dynasty. Let's go fantasy I was big on him when I was at hand. I was a huge loss for them last year that work where it could went somewhere else in terms of succumbing urban Meyer in 19 they were not can have success so you can probably chalk up all last years to complete, waste, and where we go for now right and so you like to maybe have a player that that will contribute down the line and I think Travis ATN is gonna be that guy. I just don't know if you if you I'm sure you got them. The second round you wanted to take the second with it that they had the first overall pick in the second round to write Tyson Campbell, Devante Williams was there so they could and we were happily heard about that. We talked talk to Andy earlier these and he likes him in Denver right you can have a big year. I grew from there as well. So exciting times around around me being told I was wrong here on the rich ice shelf which he loved thing is my riches big thing is he went back and corrected his don't trade for John is taken kinda big on accountability here, and I know you're big on accountability. So when I came across it a few weeks ago I was like Ryan has to address you would you demand up you will times of been wrong in my analysis work over the last six years. Guy's 13.

More than I've been right. We come back.
