Clemson Head Football Coach and 2-time National Champion Dabo Swinney and Rich discuss his new contract extension, why the current chaos engulfing College Football will bring about major changes in the way the sport is structured and governed, if there’s a chance the Tigers could leave the ACC, why he’s not that much of a fan of expanding the College Football Playoff to 12 teams, and if incumbent starting QB DJ Uiagalelei could be unseated by 5-star freshman Cade Klubnik.

Former NFL GM Thomas Dimitroff tells Rich his reaction to his former protégé Les Snead’s Super Bowl win as the GM of the Los Angeles Rams, how Russell Wilson’s move to Broncos will have a ripple effect on the Seahawks, what could be holding up Lamar Jackson’s contract extension, if Bill Belichick can fix the Patriots’ offensive woes, why the Buffalo Bills are his pick to win the Super Bowl, and which rookie QB will be the first to take the field as a starter this season.

Rich and the guys react to Jameis Winston’s thoroughly entertaining press conference where the New Orleans Saints QB demonstrated a THOROUGH knowledge of his body from head to toe.

He's given be joining us about 20 minutes time, but we turn to the Mercedes-Benz vans phone line for Mama just ate his Clemson Tigers just beat Georgia Tech in week number one there the fifth-ranked team in these United States entering week to the college football season is a newsmaker of the first variety, and he just signed a new contract extension and Clemson.

Two-time national champion head coach on the Mercedes-Benz vans phone line from Clemson Dallas when the item coached red man okay well I am doing fine so congrats on the contract extension. How long is this been in the works for yourself, well appreciated and it honestly is something that our new A/D RAM that approached know my age is about really last December and so something I think he just wanted to be really kinda drove the timing to be honest with you and so thankful and mumbled grateful to him at a boarding just in all the players and staff that we had for all the years here, and not have the opportunity to know call comes in our home then here is my 20th season and you know in my 14th head coach so in operation.

As you said you got three kids of Guthrie kitchen and they all have grown up here. Clemson my baby was born here and so it's been a I got to graduates of Clemson and my youngest just became a freshman. So certainly a placement that we love and not just thankful that Opportunity to continue to do something that I love that place a lot will normally when I'm talking to somebody like yourself with your extent of your stature in your resume and you just signed extension long-term extension after having been where you are for so long. I would ask how things have changed since you been there and we all know how this changed so I guess my question would college football is out what you think it's gonna look like in 2030 coach I that's more valuable question here with the state of affairs.

Don't you think we will what you look like in 2024. Probably more valid it down right now in college athletics, a lot of change but of unknown. I do think things are hidden in a good direction. I think you know that the popularity of the sport never been better. That's for sure. And there's there's you know I think is certainly some type of major change, probably structurally sooner than later when it comes to you know I think government structure how the power five is organized in you know we got expansion, and I mean there's a lot of moving parts but people love college football. No doubt about that and and now you know I think were well positioned. You know we we been up a school that has kept the main thing the main thing for years and know that one of the top academic football programs in the country many years now and you know our planet that continue to be the case in and continue to win at a high level and on and off the field and you have a program that graduates of players and and really know them and equips them for whatever comes next after football next Clemson. Make sure they have a good experience in and make sure we win championships and it's really that that really hasn't changed, but there's a lot of new things to navigate as we go through it but I do think that again. There's always unintended consequences from from good changes that come about only were hidden in a good direction. And no, honestly, the more chaos the better. My opinion gonna get there sooner than later world when you think it's going to be, well, I mean you're in the midst of playing season. Now I know you are getting ready for sermon on your schedule.

Louisiana Tech in the near ACC schedule right after that.

But this is the first time I have spoken to you since you said that the sport was headed for a complete blowup and you call the transfer portal total chaos referring to is tampering galore so that that would indicate that you thought football was headed in the wrong direction so abjectly change your stance on the subject matters now. No no no I still don't know we still have chaos.

I just think it it it it's going to ultimately lead where you know I think it's going a narrative of restructuring of a college football, you know, because I think Kosovo needs that college football. In particular, the power need a new governance structure, and there's no doubt about that. I think for the first time really since I've been in college athletics, the decision-makers think agree with that and you know figure out what that looks like I think is the next step, but yet there some of the unintended, the transfers good.

The fact that God can go places.

That's great, but there's a lot of unintended consequences that come with that and know there is tampering. There is no young people being manipulated and making decisions for wrong reasons. There's a lot of things to come with it. But the good from it far outweighs the bad, and not think we will all settle out. So yes, chaotic for sure right now been more chaos when it comes to just you know where we are organizationally structurally governance, while others you know portion of rules almost. I think a lot of moving parts but I do think that that is going to ultimately drive us to a better place.

You know and bring about some of the think big change need to have an account lining those changes would would probably be easier to implement. Yes, there was a smaller subset of schools in its own world to govern themselves right and and I'm here in Los Angeles, Dallas, when the other was now known as Big Ten country which I never thought was possible right so so the question is is is what lets you see there is a smaller subset of schools right and you're part of it and they ask you what do you think needs to be done to guard rail matters. What, what would be your stance on essay and IL on that front.

The guard rail on that anything I great again in summer is being used in that way is not intended. I think in aisles. Another great opportunity for us to further equip our guys to be ready for the world, you know, part of the education process things that we we always try to equip our guys with financial literacy and tax education. All these things and I you got a chance to have some real world application of that I which I think would be good. I think just, you know, again, the way your structure now. It's just not feasible anymore. And honestly it's probably been antiquated for a while but I'm not saying I think there still should be. There's deftly a role for the NCAA Order. You have to have structurally you know you have to have some type of guidelines and rules in place, and without it does lead to chaos and uncertainty in you know we've got a situation right now college football world worships it just to mess Lotta great meeting you know where you got. And that leads to tampering and a lot of people being involved don't need to be involved and and I think it more importantly, it distracts from the main thing and that is our responsibility in college athletics. That is to educate young people you know I just I believe that we have to stay focused on the scholastic aspect college athletics and you know we know 98% of these these men are not in a planned approach and we we have to equip them and I think you know as we modernize the game, modernize the structure of you know, you further share and incentivize players, but do it through the the academic process and in many incentivize education graduation and and and all those things I think there's a lot of a lot of moving parts and people a lot smarter than later, will figure out what I do think to do that. You gotta have a different governance structure because you can't have you know we we have a football oversight committee. For example, in you know the makeup of that is not reflective of the needs from the power five you will and in that you know where that's good or bad, whatever.

This is the way then you have what counsel where they know you're you're trying to make soccer the same as football or whatever and just… Different world and and I think that there's a real role still for the NCAA.

But I do think being able to streamline things to be much more efficient and decisions that need to happen like that could happen in a day or week, you know, takes years and in that whole process is just it just doesn't work and you know so that's what I mean by the more chaos the betterment of living ultimately is driving everything to a better place that were going and when that it were when we get there on next year to 24th 2031 and she said there.

I don't know but I do think there has to be some type of break where things can be done on a timely manner that are reflective of membership and so it just is not our reality right now but you think college football get there some point be a lot of smart people and what is that look like you know is there is there a commissioner are the other leagues or of a division know as the expansion grows how all that you shake shaken out a lot of smart people figured out. I know this man are our main objective is to build great men to the skate and into make sure that we teach them to use the game in Outlook again use them and you know that that has to be the objective and no college athletics provide access and opportunity in relationships and experiences and and and you know opportunities to create life-changing transformation throughout people's lives so I think it's a great platform and again a lot of good days ahead. Sometimes you gotta go through some stuff but order to get there. Well I'm getting there faster which you sent a couple times two minutes left Dallas when the Clemson coach could blow this thing completely. If you choose war. Clemson chooses to tap out of the ACC at some point and I understand there's television right some things that will make my eyes glaze over and I'm sure my listeners and viewers and somehow sure your eyes glaze over as well, but if if Clemson decides to move on and join another conference that would speed this process up.

I think considerably. Notre Dame's another one you guys play each other by the way, get ready for these questions that week leading up to that team to dabble swimming have how active is Clemson on that front. Right now, can you share with us, man.

I have no idea. I leave that up to people that are involved with a charter member of ACC for long time you know we gotta greatly gather some complications there some challenges but again I think ultimately it's it's got all be driven by a group of people that eventually will get in a room together and put all all feelings aside and do what's best for college football.

I think ultimately will get there and I think things where we are right now is is is probably really very different in a couple years and will probably looking back in today know what happened and it didn't so I don't know about all that stuff. I just know that you might retweet my job is to is to have our team ready to make sure that that we have a program that you know is it is a model program in college football and that's what were going to continue to do what it were in ACC. The FTC debate in the big 12 pack.

Whatever the are the new world college football league. I have no idea they were Clemson Clemson. This is a special place in always be a special place in always be one of those programs. It's that you have seated tables do you like to close team playoff idea that was sorted apparently proved to let me know, traditional college guy and you know I'll be honest with you I like the BCS… Was just fine and old computers. I think you like the computers in the slide rule and all you like that I can figure out. I just think well I think with the governance structure that's one of the reasons why I think it needs to be a new governance structure could have another tournament with 131 teams you know for football because football is really not a total score in you know I think it waters it down and that's another reason why I think if expansion is what we want, then there has to be some change there. You know the NFL has reason why they have 32 teams you know and so it is what it is.

People people want that and in their spiritual consequences that will come about.

Think it's it's gonna be great. People love college football you know and and and people think that more is better. And maybe that will be the case and in love. People can debate but there will be some consequences were that when it comes to most maybe some some know in season type of things but I'm excited about it and you know because again we all knew this was, so the sooner the better know and we can move on to focus on what we gotta do to manage get our teams ready, and what the calendar to look like, how do we know prepare all those things will be a lot of change that will come with talking quail so it will certainly create more access for more teams but you know were will be ready when will it here to participate, however, shakes out well over eight or 16 or whatever I let you go to quarterback competition. Maybe on your hands and your current hello okay we got it we gotta left tackle competition over saver competition is not about competition. Competition reminiscent we got three five-star quarterbacks in our room and you know DJ is is is earn the right to be the starter without question and but we got, you know, Jade has demonstrated that man you know he can take and when force based on what we sing and practice and then we finally got a chance to get a little bit a game experience.

But he's certainly proven that Haiti deserves the opportunity to correlate data within within flow of the game or season. As we go and also have a lifetime contract. You know in college football man you got gotta show every week and you gotta gotta go permit nonwritten.

I don't think were any different than that in a lot of places out there, but we were very fortunate man. We got really good players.

DJ J is very talented young man and do a lot of good things last week session 2nd half and then not give dictate in their was a blessing to so hopefully we can get Hunter job.

Some opportunities will very talented players. We've got a good situation and that we certainly have competition in every position which I think makes us know a teammate that has an opportunity to be put to sleep last one for you coach.

I've not seen quarterback coming to the league like Trevor Lawrence and have a set of circumstances around him in his first year quite like what Trevor Lawrence went through last year. Have you spoken with him and connected with him about what happened last year and how the Syria mutual Todd let a fresh start. My goodness, I don't even know how you can evaluate off of that first season, so not seen him talk to Lauren many times you know during the season last year after the season, which preceded a me he's in a great place no matter what happens, we all learn and grow from the good and bad. Sometimes you learn more from the bad and the good is that he's in a good place when he said he knows where they are. I don't have any doubt that he's got better days ahead.

No, both individually and also you know with 13 there Jacksonville Summerside seemed back at it and he's excited and just said he's grown a lot and I learned a lot. Again, good and bad to build on that §greatly appreciated. Let's connect down the line if you don't mind throughout the season. Your your your Clemson Tigers well-positioned after one week notes early on but appreciate the sense to sense figuratively and then congratulations on your top is incense in your and your long-term contracts your family appreciated so much. Take care. Let's dabble swinging the head coach of Clemson football here on the retries and show let's take a break and when we come back and return the world of professional football.

I just remember him being here in Los Angeles, California with his right hand man talking about the future of the Atlanta Falcons's right-hand man was nameless need tonight let's need is a general management team raising the banner and he's got a new contract being the general manager of the Los Angeles Rams 2026. Same thing that Sean McVeigh is locked up joining us here back on the rich doesn't your Mercedes-Benz vans form on the host of the GM journey podcast and so much more. My friend Thomas Dimitrov what's up Thomas so greatly. Thanks.

While I can't wait to connect them in. Let's do it. I mean your limited time in Los Angeles that you you is you a lesson, I will have a drink and look at last man right look or less is today.

Unbelievable Appling them. Maverick GM in this way can I love it. I cannot talk more regularly now that would probably never have been. It's been a really enjoyable journey. Watching him develop and evolve managed. It's really cool rich wants to do. Maverick, I guess you're referring to is the axing of text that but it's not all the pics you clearly they make draft choices and their important draft choices for him to make in for him and his staff to hit on.

But what what are you willing to share with everybody about his general managing and his thinking that's led to tonight's banner raising Thomas a great point Emily. I look at it is, of course, let us know the importance of personnel, draft related personnel.

He also understands the importance of projections is one of the most difficult things is a general manager per acquisition it's projecting in the NCAA and the NFL and what he has done in his group is done is make sure that the focus on the people out there if reagents have been acquiring paid the money for them don't have any uncertainties about the most part know what they are what they are acquisition cities may those guys are no necessarily completely alerted meetings. I will go under that know what it is and they know what to expect to get the most out of that player never really focus on those made rounded and try to make sure that you're putting the focus on the ground right at the front of the mode and I think they have a really really keen approach to this is not just relying on the value of graphics is putting the best team together nicely this time and again that general manager this week. I learned this from go about the question.

You know your team better than anyone else. Everyone else can project less knows HIS team knows what's best for he and coach McVeigh and I just again Adm. in his approach and what did you first meet him. Thomas will do great point lesson.

I ended up meeting way way back in the early years of my career.

I think men are almost 25 years ago we were close. We got along a lot from the standpoint of narration eating food. We work, we went out the party guys that we had a really good interaction with a lot of people in the league and our focus was on football as well as life in general and we both always had an interest in trying to grow professionally. Develop and that's where our friendship grew up communicating in between those times before we began partners know at the Atlanta Falcons and going to the Falcons at last to be there as my right hand guy was really really important at the outset, I needed the right soldiers around the inlets is great with that early on that process trust here on the rich eyes and show so we can one of the season for general manager I mean is is is you work pretty much done practice squad set roster set.

You know I mean you have to massage the A little bit, maybe get someone to me. I guess I just saw the Steelers.TJ Watts deal kind of redundant given some more Room what what is a weak one for general manager mean right now. Thomas week one, which I think you should hire roster you look at your organization, you're really focused on.

We kicking it off in the right way and a lot of talk out there about one you're hoping that your head coach of the general managers get really creative week one and I think week one presents these teams with the opportunity to be creative.

They control twisted approach because there is nothing really reveal for the most part in the preseason right so I think that's an important thing regarding roster and roster optimization. To me that is vital not only see what you have in place but you also need to continue to look out and always be in front of the curve. That's what I've always perceived it and soon the situation last looks at what is roster is what maybe coming up as far as contracts. Of course he got his staff out on the road already starting the college looks and he starts putting his mind as a general manager I'm talking about last see what is out there and what direction is going to go to fill those extensible minutes down the road with his group 1 pressure laden for sure that you need to kick it off like you just putting your feet and do it all dipping their toes in the ones that start you get into a role man. It is pressure laden coming to the first game and 101 all season was.

I mean we were just talking about a Thomas.

The first hour that this is good to be the best NFL season ever, because that March where we sell retirements on retirements and we saw top-notch A-list players on the move quarterback wide receiver and Bobby Wagoner being the last. I guess move of March. Now he's between Aaron Donald and and Jaelyn Ramsey.

Which of the March moments free-agent signings acquisitions trades retirement on retirement. Do you think is the most impactful for the season where he was a GM get ready for your GM journey podcast everything else going on in your world. You're like that's the one that's the one that's the difference maker which one well that so many out there looking like it's an amazing year. It's fun to watch. Now stepping back to get all land but you may only Thomas. You may only choose one that is the construct I'm putting you in the box. This is sports talk radio for crying out loud what he got from Russell Wilson might all eyes on it only levels on that furring to something like that. Yes, it goes way, way beyond the acquisition for George Tate and the Broncos what they like to know the repercussions of what's going on in Seattle with John Snyder and company that is another big big deal. There is so much going on how it can affect the rest of the division.

I was truly can affect the perception of quarterbacks in the 30s and the payment and the members are going about this really interesting crossroads.

Should I go all the way back to when I pulled the trigger on that line. Given his final contract when I was there and we we had everyone different different levels and get you the only 2.95% with 29 1/4 and making a decision to go to 30 million. Knowing that right around the corner in the next two months. Someone just passed him. This is amazing where the money is at all levels. Not only would quarterback situation general managers and head coaches. It's amazing to see it.

I think Russell Wilson is one I want you to close at all levels and then of course the Watson contract having so many ripple of sex even though Arizona number one quarterback and in Denver with another, Mary Russell Wilson did not fully guarantee the entire deal, the first two. So how do you see that plan out with Eric DeCosta and Lamar Jackson who said a Friday deadline on getting something done what your sense of their wonder what they know how important that quarterback.

I personally I feel plan out. They want to get that deal done and they should want to get the deal done so much that organization.

Of course there creative elements that come with a quarterback like Mark.

They also know there are challenges the right people around.

I love that organization. I think there so well thought out and of course Eric to do the right thing. I think it's it's taking care of business as it used to be.so what is, what do you think it is what sure what your assessment of what the holdup is God again contract like Watson sitting out there and then you gotta play representing himself.

Imagine you've never had something like that you dealt with back in your day. But what what is the issue best you can tell yet. I personally again.

I think you should make sure that they again made me realize the value of this is quarterback.

Of course they just want to make sure again not with age. I am not I'm not dealt with that before that if that is new to me but the idea of a jump in and say we are committing for X amount of years to assist them in an approach that we know what you have to approach with this type of quarterback.

I think that ways undermine I don't think that easy. Although I think it's really really important for them to check the box on and make sure it's not here like you put your check whisper on knowing him or being around them for as much as you were back in the day what you think is going on with the playcalling there. I mean all of New England is leaking out. Going into this number two season for Mac Jones. After a remarkable first year making the playoffs.

As a rookie, and Josh McDaniels not being there handing the playcalling off the two guys he knows very well for one guy knows very well and and handing it off to somebody's never done it before.

What you think is thinking is right now. Thomas, I believe that Bill has a very good understanding of what's around them. That's one of the things that Bill is all he had always taught anyone it comes to their you know your group. You know you're intelligent, I don't think Bill gives a about what any of us think about this you will know that, and secondly I think there's a whole bunch of banjo out there about who should take the lead on I think Bill knows you down the overview of all of you got to really important smart people and that will whether the defense of minor offense of minor. I was curious to see how that would play out and I really believe that no one's a little bit of a mystery to it.

Never wants to if I may speak about him. I don't think he ever wants to reveal anything he wants to be a little bit of history to the people can't point to any different. Any elements, playcalling leading wouldn't be yes I still have the temerity to question, wouldn't it be more sensible to get somebody who has done it before and bring that person in and teach them the patriot way the Bella check way rather than bringing somebody was fully worse than the patriot way in the Bella check way and handing them the reins of very important season for their sophomore year quarterback Thomas. I just think with check.

I think his approach is always that he knows – and putting his group and are in the right situation as they are whoever whoever he ends up on the trigger on the playcalling plan for that already and and I can't sit there and sort of project why he's doing it necessarily but for the fact that he knows that he already had those guys and I'm sure you know on the board many many times talking about how they would approach it and I think he's extremely competent with his intelligence level.

There and in the end Bill is Bill Bill. Bill does not think. I believe the does anyone believe that you could go toe to toe with them per the logistics and the playcalling of his team last one free Thomas sports talk radio question.

So here you go. You can only choose one roster the Super Bowl winning roster. Would you take like you can take one roster on the National Football League and say I will take that roster to win it all.

Which roster is an entering week one we got them the game tonight on the bills. I just think a lot of the bills are right now. I love what they're doing with Brandon the lead of it all notices of loss related to Bill Mershon she know Sean McDermott as a coach GM Bill. That's a big thing for me warily on the roster with Josh out of course on I made like I just think they are rounded they have the approach they know, a lot of fierceness to them and I think I think they are there bunghole and very great folks to come and pick a lot asking the situation. I go with them. You like the bills just like I'm one, onto Thomas amount until you just look at the way that they are roster them put together and then what beats inside when they actually play the game.

It's just it's tough not to take it really is. You know, I agree. I think again you know what their faith anything coming in with that background in your approach and what the putting money into how they're looking at things in understanding the importance of morale and growth and evolution that's been fun watching that and anytime anyone put together a winning type of team still so many layers rarely in my mind course the ball has to bounce your way. But again not only talk about the roster itself. You talk about how the organization set up and I just think bills a class organization with a lot of upside. Of course I was more you want to get best guess in the first situation where rookies can start we got something from either what your best, your old stock.

You will spot Pittsburgh could possibly be Tennessee Washington. We offer me when I think it I think they're well right now I don't think so, let's talk. Let's talk eventually to talking on day one know I'm talking about.

Which invariably the rookie drafted rookie gets shot what he what you think where you think the first one is, there is a Desmond Ritter in your old spot. Could it be too risky. Setting because they they think pickets ready. Could it be Sam how in Washington could be Malika Willis, who looked terrific in the preseason, but it is preseason. That's my guess is your option area which I'm sitting here down the street from the stadium and I will say Ritter I think Mary is a great soul.

As you know, great. This organization I think believe they know what they have in markets and they know they need to start getting this organization their heads around a growing prospect for the future and likely would not lie in way back. Very creative without put him on the scene early eventually surrounded him with the right people. They done a nice job (online, as far as putting together that office of group after coming off some major moves with with the receiver group leaving a course in Matt Ryan leaving a lot around this organization that needs to help Ritter grow understanding need to increase their running game on the run.
