The heart of every man is a great image or one doesn't usually feel that way. Jesus speaks of narrow gates wide roads masculine journey is filled with many twists and turns. So how do we keep from losing heart trying to find a good way when life feels more like a losing battle and something worth dying for, grab your gear, request your band of brothers will serve as the guides and what we call masculine journey masculine journey starts here now. Welcome masculine glad to have you today and I can hardly believe that were almost in July next week and the beach (that's right around the corner July 1.
It's hard to believe that the wording there years, almost crazy Nairobi people your age is a starkest transformation grant) doing it for a while is grandpa talking about the well been talking about this topic last couple weeks and we've been talking about what is a Christian man is were talking before the show.
There's just so many aspects of it. We could do that topic before year in our more about just cannot do it for four weeks and we touched on the first week which was what remedy member compassion compassion man shows compassion.
So how would you define compassion you know you're talking about a Christian man shows compassion you talk about you from my guys if you think about when Jesus showed compassion was posted respect to model ourselves after him. So when did he show compassion while one of the times is when the lady touched his garment in the he was busily moving through a crowd on his way to supposedly save the officials. No child and all the sudden he's interrupted, which you know for most important people in their interrupted. If you've been around important interrupting them is not part of the plan, but here you see somebody that just actually stops and really intends to what seems to be as important an issue as the other in support of that compassion as you talk about that Rob is in a meeting trying to help meet the needs of others to do it in a loving way just for their benefit in him you see Jesus do that quite a bit through Scripture Dennis last week we talked about a Christian man is remember what was strong. I believe strong, so how would you find strongly. Referring back to again Jesus were sometimes a Jesus showed strength. I think the first thing that I think of this is when he was when he was in battle with the enemy vessel comes to mind for me because it took a tremendous amount of strength to fight that offer the amount of time that he did which was really kind of a testing for him before he started his ministry. I certainly think of being strong in that regard, battling with the enemy like in the desert for the after the 40 days. That's when talking about Dara. That was a long time 40 days this week were to be talking about a Christian man submits to God, so what's the time of Jesus submitted to the will of his father. Well the what I was thinking about for strength is a great example of left he did not have to go to the cross, he chose to and submitting all that by asking you take this cup from me. If it's possible, but father said no and he quietly went and died for us young. That's a big one that honestly equipment me to play is how I feel most the time when I'm asked to submit and I don't know what causes that elicit this clip from Kramer versus Kramer, which is an older show with Dustin Hoffman but so listen to him and his son, and whether the lessons willing and I got it you got it because of them. Your listening rather than saying for those of seen the movie is kind important to note that during the time when you hear him. The father going off on the little boy saying don't do that. Don't do that, which are not seeing is that he's gonna get the ice cream out of the freezer and he slowly unpacking yet he takes the spell and he sticks it to masking the father saying don't and you'll hear this in time and time again, and that's clearly a test of are you going to submit and he is proving that you know he's got iron welder's salary. We love all the great who are not allergic to address last week and remember I told you I was little but delicious well know you're not is not yucky probably needed. Yes, I did remember to bring the truck home any of it you eat all your dinner and the need to meet where you going back to right now that that is not right that morning you hear me you listen to me now] morning there didn't like that put that ice cream in your mouth and you are in very very very big trouble. Don't you dare go anywhere beyond that I am not going to say it again, I am not going to say it again I wouldn't compare Dustin Hoffman our father father Bentley. I can see myself sometimes in the way his son Zach on about you guys but is it hard to submit sometimes my work that there's something built-in about authority like you just got a test like this person is really gonna tell me what to do.
Now it's it's a difficult place but do you know that's part of why you know when you join the military was the first thing to do's boot camp to teach you how to submit speaking of November and that's the ninth through 12th and she can masking journey radio.org to register for the boot camp and this is one of the topics we'll talk about the Jimmy question for you when you see a wet paint sign, do not hesitate what you do generally attach it yeah sure sign is correct it's not because I can't see or do not walk in the grass resist this tendency to not wait a minute I can walk in it since that rebellious nature and I think it's more of just not wanting to give up control you. We have this this false feeling that we actually have control, but the Dennis, how often is that control worked out for you in your life and you psycho I got control of this God worry about it. All yellow not very well very well. I'm usually the one that wants to have the chocolate chip ice cream bypass the seller Thursday get right to the chocolate chip ice cream that sounded like you and Robby last weekend solid was so Dennis going to ask you a question. It's God had you over the last couple years. Learning this topic and submitting yes that's been a big part of your process wasn't over the last couple years you when I made a decision over two years ago the Winston-Salem rescue Mission's admission started the very next morning after I got there because I and I think I text it Robby you know I haven't seen 520 in the morning, long, long time, and people were giving me my schedule telling me this is what you're going to do this is where where you will be at this time so that process. It was, like unit boot camp in terms of what we had to do, but through that process. What I what I saw God doing was was bringing me to a place where it seemed like it was that at first, like I just have to do with these people say. But the amazing thing about it was as time went on, it actually became more of a blessing for me in my life that there was that discipline back there was a because in the morning. Then I got to start spending time with God, which I had done long, long time. You not I had relationships with other guys. Some of them still do which I hadn't had in a long long time, so that that thing that you look at when you first do it that all the submission is going to be so bad I wanted to write to the chocolate chip ice cream. Sometimes we have to walk that walk with God in order to come to a place of delight. If I may use that word absolutely think there's something in that you world fathers. I'm sure you guys have a story of some time when it sounded more like that little boy. And for me, the one that really comes to mind is a Christmas Eve, when Sydney would not eat her lima beans and presence or anything and she kept the same labor means in her mouth for two hours. Not sure him should not do anything with them in on so well together this little house is dryer her mouth from where she was drooling a little bit, but she just would not even the nationalist lima beans you know and she liked him a couple weeks before. It seems I can.
That's his kind how kids go through and look at that as parents we say well that's kind of silly, and yet we struggle with the same thing when God asked us to do things. Robby, can you think of a time when when God's ask you to submit on something that you had a hard time initially doing it.
Actually it started with my wife that I had a chance to teach a large Sunday school classrooms, 150 people may ask me and I agreed to do it before I checked with God or my wife and so I came home I told Tammy at Soquel equipment is working to be teaching them to him Sunday school class of the awesome normality shows no no no I want to teach special ministries and I'm like you got to be kidding me know that Skippy so the next morning. Interestingly, I have my Christian business men's committee meeting and I went to explain my dilemma to my brothers, thinking they were jump and oh yeah you gotta tell her old boss make it happen was his old missionary there by the name of Archie Jones looked at me and he said Robby under the least of these my brother and that didn't come from Archie.
It came from God.
I mean it was like I knew immediately like God was reinforcing what Archie said which was what my mother what my wife was telling me and although it made absolutely no sense to me and it didn't for some time. Here we are 20 years later, I would've missed one of the biggest blessings in my life that I'm not ended up submitting to something that I think going to fall Jim what about you well this week. I just went Robby was saying that story.
It's it's very annoying how often God sounds like our life and that's a good place to bring you is our willingness to him, probably either. I am November 9 Jim be there.
All of us are going to be there and you can communis come hang out with this, but more importantly you go hang out with God is God has in store for you.
There is something very special for you. It happens every time my son Eli talk about ways you can help support Lily smiled as he was on the information that Facebook.com where you can click the button waking into masculine once again, PO Box 552 7285 Sam this November's Boot Camp can literally change a lot of man's life.
I talked to a lot of men there saying they say they don't know what their places in the grand scheme of things they don't know how to behave as Christian men.
God designed us for freedom and is coming up at this Boot Camp. It is good Alaskan journey radio.org to register now just $169 early Bird pricing for four amazing days. Masculine journey radio.org register all you know. Could you pick Rich: saw it first time I heard it, God used it smack me upside the head with those lines because I am quite a rebel. The best way to get me to try to do something is tell me I can't, but when we left. You know, it turned out that Moses saw God in the burning bush. You see it in your why is voice explain that to us.
We talk about part of that is that God in his infinite sense of humor will come address for my direction that we may we know the man supposed to be the authority of the household, but God speaks to me through my wife more than anyone, and being kind of a typical guy. The last person I will listen wife but that's not entirely true, but it turned points my life. That's been the case and that's when God speaks through my wife is when I don't want to hear from her or him, don't you find that you know we hear a lot of people quote that wives be submissive to your husband the same things in Scripture. Elijah don't you know we don't harp on that part.
That's a good point Jim. I did appreciate the Sebi had their you said you know sometimes I don't like this. You had a thought on this topic you want to talk yeah I know her message a couple of days ago that really struck me in and I think going back to what we were talking about. From my experience before the break is that I would have to share in that to the before I stepped into the rescue mission that God, in many ways was saying you know son, we have a problem you know we have a problem with some the things that are going on in your life and it's not that we think a lot of times I think some guys out there. Maybe they have a father figure. Their experience of their father was was just that you were being told what to do and what not to do God came to me in a way that said, you know we we had these problems and in and what saddens me is it's getting between us.
These things are getting between you and I so when that submission started going to the mission. You know, I began to see in my eyes were opened. After a while that what what he was really dealing with.
More than anything is that all those years of isolation those years where I was depressed about things. A lot of that was getting between the two of us, so he didn't have to come to me as a loving father and say you know what I love, yet we have a problem. We have a problem with the way that you're living your life here right now and I really would like to see us change that and I think that's important. Submission is seen that God sees this larger story. This bigger picture is not just the life that were living right now but art fraternity. He comes on the scene with that because he wants to see change and that ultimately it's going to be up to us is to whether or not we decide to walk into the rescue mission or whatever it is we do, but I think that really struck me in terms of being submitting to God is that side of not agreeing a lot of what you're talking about, which were not to talk about on this shows that that orphan spirit we battle against and if you're not sure what that is. We do have a show on that or couple shows you back and listen to them on the podcast of masking journey radio.org and it talks about how we can go to God with that. We were talking about the love of the father is a clip now from a movie the shack and I know for some people that maybe hey I don't know about that movie.
I don't know about this or that you listen to the show long-term use all sorts of things in this biblical truth in all the movie clips. We use the whole movie is and so will you agree with this movie you don't agree with this movement you listen to this clip. It's about a father in this in this case being God showing up to a man in a way he could see him as another man.
I know you to listen to how he leads him through submission or something. It's going to be very sunny were on a healing trail to bring closure to this part of your journey. You kill my own. You know you do need to want to he should soar back to use the just get away with. Nobody gets away with everything. There is consequences.
But he did was horrible. I'm not asking you to excuse what he didn't. I'm asking you to trust me to do right and to know what's best forgiveness doesn't establish a relationship. It's just about letting go Mac signs rubbing you and Julian gripping your capacity to love because you can't stop because you want to slow just as you are thousand 10 easier will me. I saw the movie this last Saturday when Eli elbowed me and had a couple times and I was sleeping so when I got up at six in the morning and so I got up and went down watch the movie. In this clip just really spoke to my heart is for me.
I struggle with that forgiving some people it's not hard that they do really well at that. I want to hold onto grudges and we talked about last week and talk about before, but that's the place of the enemy gets a good foothold and even though logically I know exactly what God's trying to do versus this rebellious part of me that says nominal hold onto that when I finally let that go and I find more the abundant life inside of the all of us have been hurt. At one time or another. Maybe been hurt recently a part of the process. God will call you to forgive and in this movie.
The guy had actually lost his daughter and I got was fun to forgive the person who killed her in on it and it wasn't for that other person was for him and someone encourages us to be praying and asking the Holy Spirit kind of prompt you there because I can promise you from my own experience. It's there's nothing more freeing than letting go that bitterness and so Jimmy had seen this movie, I know that you'd like to buy the scenes in it outward. In particular, I'm glad you delayed some got choked up. That is such a great picture of God and yet he so far beyond that. But one of the real keys there that you can miss is the when he said so you're in control again and that's the submission we need to look at and there is nothing more freeing than letting go of control and trusting God do it perfectly techno but when I am at peace is when I'm trusting God with the outcome of everything in my life and as soon as I try to take back control of things things go south doesn't work out real well. We talked about forgiveness and how we can hold onto that those hurts and filigree letting that other person go. Somehow, what some of the other things that cause us not to want to submit notes of those other feelings we have that will keep us from submitting to God when he calls us to do something for what you mean by fear, like I want to go get on the radio and talk about whatever like are you kidding me I mean I can remember being absolutely terrified. I mean III don't even I couldn't eat for anything hours before I would come on because it scared me so badly.
But, oh what an adventure when you overcome your fears of England and the enemy enemy knows that he loves whisper those things in your ear telling you that you're going to fail or you don't know what you're doing those types of things I was really fearful.
And God called us to move to North Carolina and I can imagine what my life would be if we had to looking back, I just, I can even imagine not being here. The way that I've had friends around me is been around her family. When we went through things you know losing my mom losing other people and it's been priceless to have those relationships around Jim, can you think of another thing that keeps us a big one for me and maybe most people, but we may not see it as pride and arrogance. We are all under submission to somebody that we think has no business being a S we know better than I do and I got had to deal with me in a major way with that exact issue before I could be a pastor and here's a plug for boot camp. I thought I was going to start.
I was told I was good be taken on staff in March. I was teaching school at the time as well. This is perfect for shutting down the program on part of all make the transition during the summer and try to make this a short story, but dark August hadn't happened. September happened October still not November late November I went to the boot camp God use the story of Jonathan's armor bearer to tell me that basically I had to submit and that next day after getting home on Sunday saying two days later that submission is hard to really scratch the surface of the stubbornness is also to things that we could throw in there enemy knows our story. He knows what works on as he knows the things he can whisper to us for this and that positional place for just a moment neither don't trust the heart of God. We think we know better than the same thing like encouraged us to submit to God this week and something symphonies, needed to register for boot camp asking journey radio.org
