Is dry when Josh Graham drive. This support is yesterday was the most shocked and saddened I've ever been because of the support for to be one of those days you remember every detail of upon learning Kobe Bryant, his daughter and seven others have been killed in a helicopter crash and it was even more surreal for me because I was in a basketball arena when it all happened specifically I was at Joel Coliseum.

Wake Forest had just lost by two points in overtime to Virginia Danny Manning was conducting his postgame press conference and during press conferences. I'm on twitter I'm live tweeting what Tony Bennett, Coach Manning and a couple of the players have to say after games. I'm not usually on my phone and on twitter. Contrary to popular belief I don't have notifications on my phone. Aside from calls and text messages, but since I was on twitter during the presser, I saw my mention and they started lighting up with listeners saying Josh, did you see this, have you seen this report. Have you seen this story, and they all involved.

Kobe and helicopter crash.

At that point nothing was confirmed except by TMZ. None of the details were out yet, except Kobe dead, 41 helicopter crash. That's what we had for the press conference in and it's myself and less John's walking up to the podium and less asked Danny the question hey did you hear about Kobe and I think there are enough people name Kobe on this planet. To this day that Danny is right and responding the way he did. He asked Kobe who Kobe Bryant and we told the news Danny manic. I've never heard him curse of my life, but he sitting there at the podium in a chair right after the press conference ended and he just responded with holy bleep.

The way that everybody responded.

It's understandable that somebody would react that way. So I walked outside of the press room across the doors across from the front of the media room is the visiting locker room inside the Joel Coliseum, Virginia. Their players were elated. They had just won in overtime on the road.

They were happy they were celebrating. I saw somebody who I knew to be a Virginia staffer and told him the same thing I told Coach Manning hey Kobe Bryant just died in a helicopter crash and much like everybody react. He was in disbelief but I was overheard by a 10 to 12-year-old girl outside of the Virginia locker room who yelled across to me. Hey, what did you just set and I had to repeat it again and there was a lot of that going on as the room was spread with the same news and it spread like wildfire. She was emotional. She began going on her phone and calling people just to see if they were okay. Players were bordering tears she was bordering tears and outside the locker room Tony Bennett. He walks out and gives her a hug. It turns out it's Tony's daughter players one by one walked out of that locker room and they learn the news that we were all still trying to process and these players who most of them had to idolize Kobe had to have idolized Kobe it it was it really resonated with me. There it really did seeing being in a basketball arena and seeing basketball players learn in real time that one of their heroes had passed and surprising tragic fashion that something that's always going to stick with me.

You could tweak the show at sport sub try 336-777-1600 is the phone number if you have reaction to the news. Robert Walsh is the producer of this program. Aaron Gabriel is here in the law offices of Timothy D. Wellborn Studios will get perspective from the voice of the Charlotte Hornets John folkie in about 25 minutes fresh off the trip to France. The Hornets, the first ever team to play regular-season basketball game and that state, or in that country. Excuse me, playing in Paris, so were working to spend a lot of time obviously on Kobe Bryant legacy. We are wrestling with what to do one today show because I understand many of you come to this radio show for some laughs to have some fun sports usually it's lighthearted and get get you a ways from some of the things that are bothering you, whether it's at work, whether it's in your home. It's used as an escape in many ways this is one of those rare stories where the sports headline is what you might want to escape from, but I feel like years from now, decades from now, people were going to be asking where were you the day Kobe Bryant died in a helicopter accident.

So I ask you Robert Walsh. Where were you yeah when the news happened. I was on the way to my friends house to watch the Royal rumble. We always do a poll killing a lottery system or whoever wins a get some money so I know you change so I went through a Taco Bell drive-through and as I'm going through there to pick up my Baja blast. I look at the girl after I've read the news. My phone and I was like holy crap Kobe Bryant just died and she looks at me and goes, whose Kobe Bryant and I just wanted to drive off and throw my Baja blast back to the window. What's the most stunning thing about that story three options here. Number one that Robert decides to go to Taco Bell in order to get change to that that lady. How would you say she while she was 16 and 17 years old but she had no idea who Kobe Bryant was or number three. The Baja blast still a thing or 2001. It's delicious. I cannot quit it. I've never had a blast. I will get you I'm bringing you in a Baja blast tomorrow Aaron what's the most surprising part about that story.

There, Robert would visit the talk will build in general… How are you surprised by that in any way.

He comes in almost every boarding say Betty sick as a man, I may have eight and some not even something and I ask what you eat as if I don't know you rather read Taco Bell you might feel sick. I just had a Baja blast. It was full Taco Bell meal was at a carbonated beverage about hobbling this story. It almost sounds like the Peter King tweak from five or six years ago where he puts out every time he puts out a tweet he says what cities and as if he starting to calm or something Milwaukee asked restaurant host, did you hear about Robin Williams host now be died, he killed himself thought he might cry sir if this teaches you anything. People in the service industry are heartless, they do not care about what's going on the regular world I can I can second that is a bartender debtor so you must been tending bar last night. You do some of that on the weekends. So what was the best story you had in tending bar why this while this all happened there only, unfolded with guest. It was during brunch hours, so long you have the mimosas employee Mary Zakaria.

No answer. Money came in and said you know God you hear what happened with Brian first thought was you live through teeth. It was not true as Internet hoax needed to find resources. We compared Sprint jibber jabber like that. And of course part about it was true in 1015 minutes later television picked it up. So it's kind spread around. Bar TMZ is still that one place where you hold out just a one or 2% piece of hope that it's not true. Like if it's reported by the AP or by conventional media, traditional media will call it you just assume it's right with TMZ even though they've gotten Michael Jackson right in first Prince Whitney Houston.

And now this. There still that one or 2% hope why because seven or eight years ago they got little Wayne wrong.

They killed the white a few years ago you still hold out that one or 2% hope when it's TMZ but it's it's a strange deal when something like this happens you just want to talk to somebody. I found myself calling family members and I was on the way home filling up getting some gas at Cosco. There was this random stranger behind me at I really badly wanted to start a conversation with a complete stranger. Just because in a moment like this.

The first thing you want to do is tell somebody else, but also you want to talk about it with someone if it means that much to you.

Odds are it might mean something else just as much to somebody else.

Yes Rob for sure yet I not after I realized that I didn't get the necessary change. I stopped at a gas station actually did.

I was like you know I'm to stop. It was always like I told a joke that no one heard, and I do say it again when the gas station I asked you guys hereby Kobe Bryant and everyone was shocked and appalled.

It was like finally I got that punchline. I got that that validation that I needed that all it's not just me that felt bad about this quote that sticks out to be the most based on all the great stories and tributes I read yesterday comes from Bill Polaski of the LA times who said this on your best days, the days you landed the big account or aced a big test or just survived the battle with traffic you felt like Kobe you were Kobe and in the end, as he retired into a life of movies and books and coaching. Gianna's basketball team. He was us. Now that's a great quote and something good to think about Robert, is there anything you've heard or listen to the last day that has really stuck with you as a great tribute. Yeah, I mean it's my favorite. Honestly, my for my favorite Kobe moments ever and it is you give me some giggle sometimes.

How much more do you want from me and how much more success would you want me to be more successful. How many records, records, break more records from where are you a different animal, and the same beast.

What the that mean Kobe Bryant walk that Kanye West's economy there in the audience of this Nike commercial different animal.

This is being talked about the not enough today because the story is not funny and anyway but Kobe is a very funny guy.

Kobe is very entertaining. He has awesome comedic timing and commercials. He used to do.

They were always on point coming up. Aside from that clip you just heard and Kobe's comedic timing.

One thing I take solace in knowing with Toby's passing.

This is the lesson you're on the drive with Josh is safe with her 1996 NBA draft select Kobe Bryant as you know Kobe Bryant drafted 13th overall in 1996 by the Charlotte hornet Lakers had of course the right to Kobe and that was the trait with Lottie Deeb on something that were going to recount.

I think certainly today, but certainly as the decades go on and continue to ask what is John pokey the play-by-play voice of the Charlotte Hornets kind enough to spend time here on sports of dryad I've seen that Marvin Williams was out the speaker earlier today and also James Borrego wasn't feeling well today so he didn't see his comments on Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, the Hornets owner. He had his statement yesterday.

What reaction from a player or coach that you see in the last 24 hours with the Hornets stands out to you or jacket. A good moment to go there and watching as Nick, but to Marvin earlier mild bridges negotiate. Triano spoke on the you could hear it in their voice kind of how how heavy this situation is it a good fit in their eyes to you know this is this is it that no other way to put it it devastating like that you not think what what Marvin said about the impact of the Kobe had, you know, not only on the guys that they competed against him.

But on the generation are coming after him.

I think really stood out to me that basically you know we all took something from Kobe whether that would you you took a move whether you wanted to emulate his drive.

You know his focus. Whatever it is. Kobe get so much back to the basketball community and you know the community at large with the way he was able to inspire people in you Nazi people in the business world. People in the sports radio world talk about how Kobe inspired them to work harder in O2's impact went far beyond basketball and there's there's just been so many touching tribute, so many known former players or journalists who have covered Kobe throughout his career that offered their thoughts on it is really sad man.

The minute it's really sad.

It got, you know, when I got the news yesterday. I think I would like everybody else where. I didn't believe it at first and then start checking other sources and all okay this actually happened in any try to try to wrap your mind around it and you know because of the house was don't know that we've been able to do that yet. I think you know watching the fans yesterday flocked to the Staples Center and the respect he reminded me a lot.

Joshua when Prince passed away in Minneapolis for a couple of years ago and like didn't know what to do and you want to grieve together you want more together.

You want to celebrate who you get out together and after Prince backed away.

It was like focus started flocking to first Avenue.

The music venue. The print made famous in his purple rain movie and ended up shutting the streets down around first Avenue just turned into like a four-day dance party didn't know what else to do, and they knew that that would make him feel better and filled everybody show the Staples Center last night. The way that they didn't try to try to wrap your mind around here. It reminded me a lot of that it's still very surreal. Like I can't get my mind wrap my mind around the graphic where it says 78 to 2020. It still hasn't completely set in for me at John pokey with this.

The voice of the Charlotte Hornets being in basketball as long as you have in the MBA. What's the best Kobe story you've heard, and I look forward to good cover Kobe. Go to game and you don't watch watch Kobe in the playoffs against the timber will and I had an opportunity to cover the Western Conference finals in 2004 when liberals are playing the LA Lakers and I got up there early. I was working for forthright Arabs working for a radio station in Minnesota doing sports for them. There's a big outdoor festival and I got up I got up to the cities really early and was planning on like taking an effect on everything or drink everything got canceled. I ended up just wandering around target for hours before the game got started in Kobe came out to warm up Don and like the left, left baseline area judges going through the routine. There's a group of family were there they were united just just trash talking on an excellent element.

Kobe Jesse never broke concentration immediate shot after shot at going through the normal routine as he finally wrapped up never acknowledge the fact that all dialed in wrapped up eternities got a game that little Kobe smiled Kobe's American it was just fascinating to watch and you know his single-minded determination and focus. You know I you don't see that very often and I'm trying to think through my mind like up close and personal use one of the only other conduct on something similar was watching live as a no-hitter T-shirt and walked down there's thousands of people around you know trying to get his attention and Karen Martin Tiger just like he was. He was so zero in unit I was gonna that that focus that you saw out of Kobe in that moment, and then I was barely passed Michael Jordan the all-time yuppie adult ongoing list that he did that at Target Center and listening to him speak afterwords. Then, reflect upon it in the moment as they stopped the game. It made the announcement headed up again all it was. It was really neat.

It would need to be to be around those moment, then you know I never had any one-on-one interaction with Kobe but you know just been around for those moment the building for those moment you know those are some of the things that will stay with me real quickly.

Two things here. Nick's Hornets tomorrow night in Charlotte you know if there's anything planned Hornets are going to do an honor code. Water got dark after practice today that they're in there to discuss that and come up with something to me you thought it tribute yesterday.

I imagine there's going to be a pregame moment of silence and then there'll be some tribute you note done by by the hornet and the players or or by the two teams but we don't know what that is rent out a bit about that and figured out what was the highlight of the transcript highlight of the France trip. Honestly, I think, was was meeting a couple guys who are diehard hornet fan.

One was from London and one was from from France and you guys cover the team over there. They stay up till 3 o'clock. According getting a chance to chat with damages.

Hear their stories I think would really really be because you think about like how dedicated you know we got dedicated fans. The state, but outside what's cooking good embedded deep in our sands or were they wearing old school Hornets care. Now they were set up Hornets and fill out one of the guys with the big Kimball Walker fan at UConn and he became hornet fan and I'm going to let you know I'm still hornet fan and another guy with a friend from from a long time ago. He may have been a bobcats ran into hornet fan, but these were guys that have been fans for a really long time so that was really neat. That's awesome John. Next time we speak English speaking on better circumstances. It's one of the darkest days the MBA has had and certainly one of the more surprising headlines we seen in sports history. I think in our lifetime. So Jeff Pritchett you being here in that what's been a busy time with you guys getting back from France certainly appreciate that. You got it. That's John pokey. He's on Twitter at JW folky FOC KEI don't think there's a day you compare in NBA history to this. Maybe Magic Johnson announcing that he has the HIV virus that sticks out in the early 1990s Jordan picking basket baseball over basketball but he then returned magic. Everyone thought it was a death sentence.

He still with us today Len bias in the mid-80s that comes to mind, but it's different because he he was iconic in circles. The college basketball circles, but it was about a star that could have been. While Kobe he wants. He wants and I don't think the MBAs had a day that's is tough as yesterday was.

I really don't. But what a month it's been for the MBA.

Just think about it. January 1 of this year. David Stern passes away when the most important nonplayer figures.

This lease ever happened. Probably him and read our back then Zion Williams makes his debut in the day after Kobe Bryant is passed by Lebron James, Kobe dies in a helicopter accident just a wild month. A wild start to 2020.

Next, the two things that made yesterday's news more painful for everybody to appear on the direct hello the Loch Ness monster got her drunk driving with Josh grab like when Robert wants to cheer me up.

He just goes into the Coldplay library, like today's the day we all need to be cheered up after the depressing headline from yesterday and were continuing to learn more and more about the surprising and not indented. Kobe Bryant at 41 years old. The way I get past it.

By focusing on Super Bowl LIV which you can listen to right here on sports of dryad Sunday night and talking a little bit of Panthers football Jordan Rodrigue before we get to the footballing food portions of the conversation as a journalist interested in your perspective on where were at when it comes to breaking news stories such as yesterday did anything from yesterday bother you with all about how this story we learned about how it continued developing and breaking on and you know but yeah, I mean really people glad there are children involved in that. Tragically and so I would be disappointed and now by these very very public and widespread states that were being made in the journalistic process that basic confirmation in detail, waiting in panel confirmation and I know that there's been debate over what Mary said about and note can be should have waited here to report our quicker great story and found that the family farm informed and you know I go back you went on day one. Goran every turn of the training I get It programmed across the country. When the first thing they teach and harm and incorrectly better than right no effect on the crying when it comes to breaking your finger and arrow there and so on can come back to one that really were breaking the tragedy breaking the news of a tragedy like that really were never about with something that should never ever ever be about who got hurt should be who have been after information who approached the story with the care and the there, and foundation drink with us on twitter Rodrigue and we actually have some breaking news to pass along before we get to the football.

According to the athletic in the aftermath of Kobe Bryant passing away Lakers Clippers tomorrow night has been postponed. This is official tomorrow night there will be no Lakers Clippers at Staples Center. But Jordan, looking ahead to what you're more. What's more, your expertise in terms of what you cover Panthers the Panthers have a new coaching staff were still learning this could be a part of Matt rules staff and we learned that the Cleveland Browns have brought Andrew Barry back is there general manager. He was the Eagles VP of football operations at the Panthers were blocked from interviewing.

What do you think timewise at timeline wise the Panthers are going to finish up.

Matt rules staff and there been a higher VP of football ops to join Marty Harney in the front office pre-match and you know I'm I think they're waiting on like getting buyers written and headset taken right now. I really think it right down to that client asked her why we haven't heard anything official from Aquino, packing like you guys are coming out of Lake Island from Oliver and senior volunteer.

Kind of like parachuting in your bonnet you have yet to be in Charlotte nightmare that I am pretty much done point in terms of VP and interviewing people and you can't college is very important especially for free agency and my father whispered network combine quitclaim that's really crucial. I am now taking my time on that make and I think it meant that I get in the lack of urgency there have to do anything right now. When teens are prepping for the draft and the pandas are very embedded in creature crap and Cossack though you know part of me thinks that they could get very lucky for the draft look like what's the point of building. No hand in preparation for the draft bill. Either you're getting grain creating or have depressed back there.

Things like that and I'm wondering and you might hear something a little bit closer to the draft on after that one could write me everything crime in the crapper back in you. The creative really would like a lot of time, and you think that you know. It appears that my increased call control at the Process and I would that change which now Craig you think it happened but it very early on. I remember you and I had a discussion a few years ago about who the Panthers were highlighting with the top 10 pick and you said I think they really like McCaffrey I think it's a good fit and ended up happening in last year you were one of the people that pinpointed Brian Burns as well. I know it's early on. This is not something to be tied to minded to obviously because we haven't even had that the scouting combine or protease or any of that. But is there a name at seven that if a name drops their you can realistically see Carolina racing to the podium, or I guess taking one of those boats that they have to get to the stage in Las Vegas in order to get the pic at my accomplishment. I think I can live. I think I can guide you at the podium and yet he can't get it one of the I think became really very very retirement they don't have much That Roster Right Now and I Partner Karen Rent Controlled and I Don't Think You Finally Got around.

I Think I Might around Create the Popcorn Caliber Player Immediately and yet They Weren't Know Claire, I Also Think One of Their Guide and I'm Really Concerned about Their Debt on the Line Heart Couple Years Ago When He Saw Corners after Letting Josh Norman Walk Our Software and He Went and Drafted Letter at the Crackle I Would Caution Again Something like That.

Let's Get into Some of This Breaking News. As I Mentioned the MBA Now Is Just Put out a Statement Saying That Clippers Lakers Is Going to Be Postponed. The Next Scheduled Game for Los Angeles Is Good to Be a Home Game This Friday against the Portland Trl., Blazers, according to Sean's karate.

He says that using shams would you say Sean's I'm a shams man. Shams got here.

He says that the Lakers are nowhere near ready to play basketball right now grieving the loss of Toby.

We saw Lebron on the tarmac yesterday, which I think confirms a lot of that NC State and North Carolina have taken to the floor for warm-ups in Raleigh and minutes after I said I have a feeling: Anthony's get up late at night: Anthony walks out in a suit, it's usually a pretty good sign that you're not gonna play if you walk out on the floor wearing a suit. Conversely, Manny Bates, who missed Saturday's game against Georgia Tech to the back. He is in warm up here and appears to be a full go. That's according to Joe, Julio of the Raleigh news and Observer.

What do those two pieces of information main trouble from North Carolina.

However, does common sense is common sense enough to out do what we believe to be NC state stuff NC state stuff right everything we seen in the ACC this week. It hasn't made much sense like Wake Forest.

They were without you do the math. They were without Brandon Childress thought it was a terrible sign I thought I thought Wake Forest wasn't going to score more than 35 and the game against Virginia. When I walk in and see him in a walking boot and Charlie Brown still wearing sweat notes on the Brown no Brandon Childress no Sharon Wright, Junior 35 patent continue over time they lost like Tobit was a great effort by bird bye-bye Wake Forest anything to be able to Georgia Tech beat since he states North Carolina hammers and injured Miami just expect the unexpected. We have time for one more call to advance was in Boone. What you got on Toby passing what what's your contribution, your Iran. All know that people know what to bring the rate case law in 2003. Even though it never even made it to trial court admitted and it seems like people want to drag people want to drag Toby down after the fact. All the don't I don't know the driver will request you bring up.

Appreciate the call. I think it's definitely something that needs to be discussed if we learned anything from the last couple of years. It's that women should not be dismissed just that simply should not be dismissed.

You should listen to what is set. However when you look at the 2003 case what people have interpreted is Kobe admitting that he raped that woman in Colorado. I think the way I interpreted it was him apologizing not just to the woman but to his wife, apologizing for infidelity you can interpret that as him saying that he was wrong and that he raped that woman.

No, he is settling to get this dismissed and to get it written and and and to have the case not hurting her in court she elected to settle as well. People always just look at the deep prominent figure in the subject.

He settled that means is wrong know the other side chose to settle as well. No one was forcing her to settle right so I don't know you don't know I'm not protecting Kobe in that regard.

But when it was first published by Washington Post reporter. That's the place I sought first person talking about the 2003 case after Toby passed away. It was less than an hour after TMZ broke the news right at the Calabasas Hills that were engulfed in flames and that had smoke in them all night that it subsided by the time people were already discussing. I take issue with that. Now, does that mean the people, such as that Washington Post reporter brought it up and was suspended today are wrong to do so. I don't think so. Or I don't think they should be punished for it. I don't think it's the right thing morally to do because that's the way you approached. You have a moral dilemma. I don't.

I think you should talk about these things.

I think you should talk about him calling the referee a homophobic slur in 2010, but the best line that I read today in addition to what Bill Polaski is rogue comes from Charles Pierce who said, quote Kobe will be measured by how deeply you believe he corrected his faults and what I've seen publicly what everybody is talked about is how much he loves his kids were his daughters and the way he's been an advocate for women athletes US women's national team for the WNBA that shows me that he's grown when it looks. When you look at the homophobic slur Robert. What are some of the steps he's taken to better himself in that regard.

After that slip-up that led to a big fine. I took a number of glad classes.

I don't know is what the acronym is, but I know it is something about fighting against the homophobic slurs and whatnot. He took those classes and then spoke at events for the people. One blast who used messages such as that on Twitter yet enduring games and fans would shout homophobic slurs he would correct them while on the court right so I don't think you should be defined by just the mistakes. It's how you respond to them and how much growth you show as a response and I see Kobe Bryant is someone who shown a lot of growth
