How Thanklessness is a Mark of a Society in Decline

How to think what this is a mark of the society in decline as a topic will discuss today. This Thanksgiving weekend here on the Christian worldview radio program where the mission is to sharpen the biblical worldview Christian and to share the good news that all people can be reconciled to God through faith in the person in the work of Jesus Christ. We hope you all had a nice thankful Thanksgiving weekend or in the midst of that right now and working to discuss.

Thank less nests and thankfulness today here on the program and on the first two chapters of his letter to Christians in Rome. The apostle Paul establishes that all people are sinners and separated from God and he spans the spectrum from nonbelieving Gentiles, pagan or spiritual or otherwise, to those who are the religious Jews of his day the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Those who are very moralistic at their all under sin. He describes what leads the that former group the nonbelieving Gentiles in Romans one into this this downward spiral written read this passage today. This this downward spiraling degrees of sexual immorality and other sins that it is because they suppress the truth and they don't acknowledge God. That's why there is this decline in society. This further spiraling downward, and that makes sense when you read it when you reject the authority of God in that me make man the authority that goes a long way to explain why. Let's say our American society is what it says. Toward the end of Romans one that is quote depraved and full of strife and arrogant inventors of evil and gives hearty approval to those who practice sin.

That's right from Romans one, but there's another reason given in Romans chapter 1 that leads a people to being as it says in that passage given over by God, to unrighteousness. Very interesting.

Verse 21 says, for even though they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks in other words, not giving thanks to God for who he is and all that he gives leads to a society in moral decline. No. Why would that be. So this weekend here on the Christian worldview ring to discuss why think listen is not just the suppressing of truth in the not acknowledging of God thankless. This is at the root of our society's brokenness and how Christians need to speak and model something very different so we just read this passage in Romans chapter 1 may be as familiar to many of you but for those who aren't familiar with it. I think it bears reading to get a sense of this downward spiral of a society whether secular or religious in rejection of God, says Paul writes in Romans chapter 1 before he gets into that downward spiral. He talks about his purpose. He's writing to Christians in Rome and he's in a will come and visit. So he says so.

For my part, I am eager to preach the gospel to you who are in Rome for I'm not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith as it is written, but the righteous man shall live by faith and would that be all of our fury follower of Christ. Would that be all of our mission in life to be not ashamed of the gospel to notice the power of God for salvation is the only way the only door to being right with God is the good news that God sent his son Jesus Christ to live a perfect life than to offer himself as the substitutionary sacrifice on behalf of our sin, to satisfy God's wrath and justice so we can be forgiven him a right with God. That's the gospel and that is received by the way, not by going to church your becoming a better person is received here says in verse 17 that the righteous man shall live by faith. This is received by faith, not in what Jesus did, plus what we do but is received by faith solely 100% on what Jesus did on our behalf in excess of the begin from the person and work of Christ, who is Christ is this perfect son of God, the sinless son of God, so therefore the only one that could be the sacrifice for our sin, even if the die for his own sin, because he was perfect he was sinless, and not only the person of Christ, who years, but his work. What he did for us in his perfect life in a substitutionary death in his his supernatural resurrection from the dead. That's how you if you never believe that message of the gospel. That's how you can be forgiven and made right with God by believing in who Jesus Christ is and what he did for you on the cross is the most important decision that you that you will have to make in this entire life with you receive that that news that revelation from God, whether you reject it is going to determine your response to that will determine the Bible says where you spend eternity whether you reject God and what is revealed to you or by faith. You receive it so we hope that you will receive that that most precious, most important, most invaluable gift that God offers. That's right there in Romans one, but then it goes into the consequences for rejecting the unbelief.

If you reject that message of the gospel. Here's where it goes not only for you personally imbued to varying degrees, but for a society in general that the rejects the truth, the gospel of God says in verse 18 of Romans one for the wrath of God is revealed not. We see the goodness of God.

The gospel the previous Earth. Now all of a sudden you reject that I here comes the wrath of God. This may not have been told you in church you may go to a church that only emphasizes the, the love of God. That's not what the Bible says God is a God of love, but he's a God of justice wrath and he's angry over sin.

He is the King of the universe. He deserves our full allegiance and obedience in Marie reject his ways and reject him. He's angry as any sovereign will be angry except he's perfectly, righteously angry says the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men. Here's the first category of why this happens is downward spiral, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them. For God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world his invisible attributes, his eternal power and divine nature. They have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made so that they were are without excuse for even though they knew God a here's the second one they did not honor him or give thanks that's rogue and a focus on today. I get more into that today, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools in exchange the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures and what they make idols they worship things that are God, whether it's money or materialism were just idols. They carve out a wood whatever they just they just go in this downward spiral. And that's what we get in Romans chapter 1 to the end of the chapter 32. Here's the downward spiral and it keeps on repeating this phrase. Therefore God gave them over. Therefore God gave them over in the God is basically saying you want your own way you can have your own way but there are there is a consequence there it in going your own sinful way. So in verse 24 says, therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their flesh to impurity so that their bodies would be dishonored among them, and here's another condition here of why this downward spiral happens at suppressing the truth. Here it is, for they exchanged the truth of God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the creator who is blessed forever. Amen. Next verse 26.

Another gave them over. For this reason because they exchanged the truth of God for a lie. God gave them over to degrading passions see the spiral he is getting deeper and deeper degrees of depravity for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural and in the same way. Also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their air. Verse 28. Here we go again, another giving over this downward spiral continues and just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer. It would gone from suppressing the truth to exchanging the truth of God for a lie to not seeing fit to acknowledge God any longer. Here's another giving them over, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil, full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice.

They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful, and although and although they know the ordinance of God, they know it, that those who practice such things are worthy of death where they do they don't. Not only do the same but they give hearty approval to those who practice them.

This is a powerful powerful passes and this doesn't just describe. I think the culture in America at this time. I think it does describe that describes any culture, any society over time that suppresses the truth that exchange the truth of God for a lie and that does not see fit to acknowledge God any longer. What once individuals do that or wants people to do that they are given over and there is this downward spiraling digression of immorality and all kinds of other sins in this this idea of suppressing the truth is, if the idea of knowing truth. What you do when you suppress something you know about something we try to cover it up. You try to hide it like they know about God and he says in this pastor, they know about God through creation. Just looking around us leads us through to think well, wait a second here since this couldn't happen by itself. It didn't just note spontaneously combusting and or arise out of nothing. There had to be a look at a building or had to be a builder.

We look at creation had to be a creator so he says through creation.

We can know there's a God and also through our conscience. We know there's a guy said that this passage that they even though they know God.

They did not honor him or giving thanks that that we we know we know inside of us. There are certain rights and wrongs who who put that inside of us. Why don't animals know that an analyst animals don't know is wrong to steal and kill each other, but we do not just intelligence something in us that that knows that's the conscience that God is put inside of us. So even though we we know those things through creation are conscious, a conscience, we suppress the knowledge we suppress the boat. We exchanged the truth of God for a life likely to hit we we hit we have something in her hand was a not want that will exchange it for something else and we want to acknowledge God any long.

We push them out of society and finally there is this hearty approval of sin.

Not only do we suppress and exchange and what acknowledge God but then we disapprove this this depraved of base society, but that one phrase in that passage in Romans one is very interesting.

It makes sense why the suppressant suppression of truth in the exchanging of truth for of God for a lie in one acknowledging it, that makes sense why that would lead to really a bad state of a society or a person, but it's what it says in verse 21 for although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. That is interesting that a lack of thankfulness to God is part of this downward spiraling into depravity. It's interesting because mom are not.

Thankfulness is going to get in today. For all his good gifts with her life or breath or health or the creation around us or for food or for his incredible design. What is that lead to.

If you just join us and in the first segment we won over this passage and in Romans one which describes how a person or society spirals downhill. Not that spiraling that regression. That digression occurs when that person or that society as a whole suppresses the truth and righteousness when they exchange the truth of God for a lie when they don't see fit to acknowledge God any longer. That's what happened. That explains why we are where we are in America today, but there's this other little reason given in there that seems that maybe not as strong of a connection to some of those other things to why we would be going downhill on its it's a society that does not honor God. But there are also give him thanks and when you don't give God thanks for who he is and what he gives for all his good gifts of just the gift of life are the gift of your next breath or the fact that your have been a relative health at this particular point in your life you're still alive or for the creation, the beautiful creation around you for giving us food to eat, giving us the capacity to farm and raise animals for food and the incredible design of our bodies and every just so many things to give God thankful for when you're not when you don't do that. What is that lead to results and serve complaining like while things aren't as they should be and I want things better in these two entitlement I really deserve something or it least it is the simmering resentment of bitterness or and all that starts to lead between strife between people and there's there's a rage and there is a there's a lack of peace in society that that describes the way it is in America today.

Just look at the news any given night, there is just such a division in this country and you can say all both political with Tromp and it's the liberals and the Democrats versus the yeah I mean that that's the surface, but where that really comes from is the ideas the worldview that undergird the different political philosophies are really comes down to to religion, so to speak your worldview.

That's what it comes down to if you reject and suppress God you'd you're not thankful just to be in an angry upset person. Things should be better because I deserve it. So thankfulness is really gratefulness for the for the situation you're in, knowing that you really don't deserve anything but judgment and that God is good and gracious for his every good gift and that things could be a lot worse if not for God's goodness. It is looking at God and saying you're in control you designed all this and I should be thanking you for whatever good gift comes in my life not expecting things to be as I want them, but to be trusting and the ways that you have them. It is not necessary. Lowering your expectations or giving up on improving your life. Not at all, but it's trusting God and thanking God over and above your own personal expectations. So this Romans, one chapter I think really does represent where America is today. It's is suppressing the truth is not acknowledging God. It's it's it's giving hearty approval to these sins and, above all, I think, is not giving thanks me. We have a political party. I'm not trying to put we don't. The Republicans are perfect, but we have a we have a political party in this country that literally stands for these things stands for the killing of unborn children that stands for homosexuality. Transgender is him the redefinition of God establishing a marriage stance for legalizing recreational drugs will stand for.

By the way soon. I'm almost positive euthanasia. The removal of anything Christian and is very is very not very supportive of God's chosen people, the Jews in Israel that's literally like their platform. It's this set exchanging the truth of God for a lie suppressing the truth in unrighteousness. That's what that party stands for. And again, not saying Republicans are some moral your theocratic print. Not at all, but this one party is so overtly this way now and so there's this incredible divide in this country and again the the political is just the surface is the worldview that under guard undergird to so when you stand for all those those things I just mentioned that are mentioned in Romans one homosexuality the perversion, the depravity and so forth was the result. The result is a complaining of strife ridden the divided a raging burn down the system fundamentally transform America.

No acknowledgment of God in the great country we have is what's left of it. Once we once had. And so there's this fit. They now feel in America slogan good to get into in the next segment is should we all be thankful to God, knows that watching the pilgrims story this this past week about coming to America really get into what the pilgrims have when they came to America versus what we have today and we really have any reason to be unthankful at all will do a little comparison and find out where this thankless nest is coming from. We live in the most affluent country in the world by farming the poor here in America. Just compare the poor here in America to any other place.

The rotor visited India or Africa or South America, Mexico. Places like that. I mean the difference in the poor there in the poor there is night and day, or visited repressive countries like China or Russia or North Korea mean when you start comparing and contrasting this country to every other country around the world begin to realize that we should be incredibly thankful to God for the incredible abundance and affluence that we have in this country.

The ID opportunity in this country. The educational system opportunities we have in this country. The high standard of living comparatively to the rest of the world and all throughout past history. The longer lifespans. We live was watching the special on the pilgrims this week. Mean people living till there 30, 40, maybe 50 years old back then.

What's our life expectancy now in America today with the healthcare we have is late 70s, around 80, but it did the incredible natural resources we have in this country.

This is truly a beautiful land that the diversity and variety in the various areas of this country is just amazing. We have the most powerful military in the world which which which keeps bad actors in the world from overtly trying to take over a land lease, at least at this point we have relative peace within our country ethic.

Now there is violence and there is murder and so forth. But you know, for a land of 300 and some million people you're going to expect in a fallen world with sinful natures. There's going to be violence but relatively speaking, there is not coos and things going on like their RSA in Iraq or Syria or North Korea, or you no overt slavery and persecution of people like in China imprisonment without due process, and we have the we have these freedoms enshrined in our Constitution, a freedom of speech and to assemble and freedom of religion. We have the ability to voting influence whose gravure leaders. We have a charitable coming. It just goes on and on and on and it is sweet.

There's been no country as blast.

Maybe aside the nation of Israel back in the day. At certain points in history.

No country as blast as the country we live in today and yet a lot of our country are going to vote for someone in believe that there skeptical of this country. There are haters of this country like we need to burn down the system we have an oppressive country. It's racist and sexist. It's unjust.

It's immoral. It's genocidal, it's just not, it's no wonder there's so much strife and division is no wonder there is this downward spiraling into all kinds of property. This God giving them over dynamic that's at work in our country today.

So despite all this great abundance and affluence in our country we have this attitude of, well, it should be better. We can create utopia were not were not there. We we have a inherently unjust structural problem in our country. I want to compare where our country is today from a positive standpoint.

All that we have two what the pilgrims had when they came over in the early 1600s may play a short little soundbite here from radio host Bill Meyer. He was firmly one of the that the host of the Focus on the Family program you created this little two minute feature on Thanksgiving as you prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving with turkey and pumpkin pie. Why not teach your kids about the very first Thanksgiving. The 17th century was a time of religious struggle and want to follow the established church.

Somehow different booths about how to practice their faith of those groups decided to travel to North America to a place called Virginia, they believed they were seeking 60 or 66 days of seeing the Mayflower's. They arrived on the coast of what is now Massachusetts hundreds of miles from their original destination. Most of that first winter living on the Mayflower began to build a few small cabins on shore with the cold and illness began to take a terrible toll by April. Half of them had died mainly from pneumonia. That spring, an Indian warrior named Santos that walked boldly into their camp introduced them to another Indian name Squanto would been to England several years before the pilgrims gave the Indian gifts and the Indians taught the pilgrims where to find the best fishing how to plant corn with fertilizer by summer their crops were plentiful to celebrate. And thank God for their survival. They hold a three-day harvest Festival in the fall of 1621 and invited the Indians to join them in his journal, Gov. William Bradford wrote these words, our fathers were Englishmen, which came over this great ocean ready to perish in this wilderness, but they cried unto the Lord for their voice and looked on their adversity.

Let them therefore praise the Lord because he and his mercies were forever free of the pilgrims needs to be a reminder every Thanksgiving. I hope you spent some of your Thanksgiving reading and be reminded of who these pilgrims were and what they came over what they believed in what kind of life they had in their thankfulness is truly incredible. We watched the PBS American experience video or film is a two hour film on the pilgrims in their crossing. Of course the PBS is a bit of a leftward slant to it, but I thought it was overall fairly fairly accurate and fair and it's just a great reminder me think about these people think about where we are today in American all we have these people the pilgrims they were persecuted in their own country. In England they had to sneak out of their country. They could leave their country for to sneak out of their country to go to Holland so they could have more religious freedom they had to work super long days, their children had to work in Holland, just to be able to survive. Then they had this perilous ocean crossing because they were seeking greater religious freedom. Half of them died is like 100 and some that came over half died. They had nothing materially. They spent every waking minute in the New World whether they were on the Mayflower in the port waiting to go on shore they're sick.

They spent every waking minute trying to survive building shelters cutting wood for heat hunting for food, fishing, planting, caring for sick people making close. Think about it they couldn't they couldn't go down the street to the local supermarket and have a choice of your 17 different types of chips to buyer food or steak or chicken just sitting there. They couldn't travel anywhere didn't have cars or or trains or planes or anything like that. They couldn't discard the cider house and turn up the thermostat Winslow coldest trip to 68.

Please they had no running water, no hot showers, no hospitals, no roads, no transportation. They couldn't get two day shipping on Amazon for anything they needed. They had a constant threat from the from the native Americans, the Indians who lived in their region. Some of the more friendly the that the one tribe that they mentioned that audio came of the name of the that was in the Narragansett was the whop in August.

They were were friendly with them with other ones were.

Don't try to get them read them from that the eastern seaboard. There is constant threat of just just living they had short lifespans. There is death everywhere. There are constantly bearing their debt, they barely survived and get the second year there here they have a three-day festival about how thankful they are how thankful they are to God just to be able to survive in his his bounty.

Just compare that to the Finkel S&S that we have in America today. I was listening or watching this video recently of a is called brain pop.

It's a a video series that they use in the public school system in America isn't in the physical brain pop Junior you can find a lot of the user for grades K through three I'm gonna play this and just going to give you a contrast to that little audio I played from Bill Meyer there on Thanksgiving. It was home to a civilization that went back thousands of years and Plymouth's founding was a dark turning point for those people, they were pushed off their land not to adapt to a different way of life to survive that pattern was repeated across the continent for the next 200 years, which is why some Native Americans consider Thanksgiving day of mourning for those of us who do celebrate, we can honor that perspective taking time to consider.

It's fairly easy to be thankful.

One when there is blessing in your life. Things are going well. You're healthy and all that thankfulness to God is tested under trial and is during those times that we submit ourselves to God's sovereignty. His his authority to reign other as he causes or allows everything that happens to happen is trusting that he knows better that everything he does is for my ultimate good of sanctifying myself. According the way he wants me in for ultimately for his glory. It doesn't mean that during those trials that the trials don't hurt and you don't grieve that in the midst of them, you trust God in your your thankful knowing that he's in control and has purposes. For that you may not even see at this point in this says this all over Scripture. James one. Consider it all joy, my brother and consider all joy when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.

Psalm 107 give thanks to the Lord for he is good. His lovingkindness is everlasting. It's hard to say that in the midst of a trial. That's were called to do. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so we should be saying so being thankful to God first Thessalonians 5 rejoice always, pray without ceasing here this verse 18 in everything give thanks that means in the good things in the hard things for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. Thankfulness has to be reminded and reinforced every day because we don't naturally want to be thankful we not we would naturally want to raise their expectations higher weed we want more. We think we deserve more. Think of the the Jewish Exodus in the wilderness, they think God was right there in the pillar of flame and and and fire in an and in the smoke by day and night, and so forth. And they were not thankful for all the things miraculous and God was doing so in our hearts, not to be thankful but has to be reminded and reinforced every day and so we should be thanking God every day for that.

He just simply exists and that he's revealed himself to us through creation through our conscience through Christ and through his word, we should be most thankful that he's sent his son, especially coming to Christmas to send his son to offer us redemption from our sin offers reconciliation to him. We should be thankful for all the things of life for our country, but even life and breath in any kind of health that we have in family and country and that we have shelter over our heads are so many things to be thankful for and we will grow and that when we taken the word every day when we understand who God is and who we are, in light of God and what he's done for us are thankfulness will increase. When you focus on your own circumstances or other people's expectations are what society is selling to us the be the unjust country. The all that kind of stuff you won't be thankful.
