This is Chris shoes with the Christian perspective podcast with Chris shoes. We encourage our listeners to engage the culture with Jesus Christ your chosen Truth Network podcast is starting a just a few seconds.

So enjoy it. Sure, but most of all, thank you for listening to The Truth Podcast Network.

This is the Truth Network, good morning. Thank you joining us on the Christian car guy Robbie is at a men's retreat. This is Bill Mixon filling even if my voice sounds familiar, it means you might listen to the show the first Saturday the month. We really enjoyed you being here and we want to remind you it's a call-in show 336-896-0830 got 35 years in the insurance business of insurance strikes you, feel free to call in with got John Holland, who is a Holger ride to Capt. which will find out a little bit more about and Dr. Britney speed is an emergency room doctor, Dr. speed, say good morning to everybody. Wonderful John is a longtime Harley-Davidson motorcycle enthusiast.

John tell us what in the world is a ride Capt. with a hall or personal thank you Bill for having me on a ride. Capt. is someone who is taking out groups if you will, on safe rides. That's probably the most concise way to say that we have on our Harley owners group rides.

We have charitable rides, or even just club rides and we have intersections we have to be concerned about one make sure that everybody gets through them safely and make sure everybody's arriving safely in the spacing is safe and so the right captains in the front and the back kind of mental art, monitor those rides to make sure everybody is safe and arrives alive over the years I've had many a friend that was a motorcycle enthusiast and some of them love to tell me about all the different metal parts they had in their body and took pride telling me that they would set off metal detectors anywhere they Whitley and so I would assume.you have seen a few motorcycle accidents in your life. Tell us a little bit about what you think we should know when it comes to motorcycle safety and yeah I wondered if I come up on an accident.

What I should or shouldn't do. If it's a motorcycle accident well and happy to hear more intricate part of how the type of work best on the road and came to safety for gear and helmet and all of that out lately quite a bit. It is more likely to have a crash on a motorcycle, but it can be quite enjoyable if you think about it number one thing that I would think that the helmeted priority.

You know they states that don't require it. From what I understand that just because you can doesn't mean you should and helmeted St. Mark's can count memorable one being in government came in the Helmet agreement shaved off from being drug along the road and you can only think that would become an otherwise very important for the helmet. Even if you not required by law, and eye protection in the shield or you can buy eye protection, data protection and important. Just like they recommended clothing to protect writers from small debris that flies around to get an accident or the letter is pretty tough. And a lot of those materials are tough enough to withstand from the road rash and they protect you from not only the sun but again the small debris that can fire around the and recommend helmet not protection appropriate clothing for writing include glass covered shoes, ankles and feet always get banged up if they're not wearing the appropriate she vanquishes actually think it's a pretty good protecting the lower extremity and about what we recommend reflect including help at night helps people see the motorcycle a lot better of the things I would mention off the top my head and coming across the scene is number one. We keep a lot of courses wilderness medicine on making sure that if you are doctor you are going to stop at a scene, you protect yourself. Make sure your cars off the road that you don't injure yourself in the process of trying to help and no fires around being fake with yourself. You want to make sure they know the patient is then hey what's your name, make sure they're talking make sure there greeting you can check up. I'll find out how to get and play online if you need to take a basic training course and if there injure you want to make sure you get the appropriate response team there while you're waiting to make sure their calm, keep them safe and watch the scenery around you and keep them warm there that elements keep them dry. If you can, and don't try to remove helmet leave them be. Keep them still.

If you cannot follow. And you know training stuff.

If you see something bleeding and put pressure on it or and basic think it's in the car. It's always great to keep a tourniquet in the car and use it if you need to get all that's really good if you take a basic Earth Day class a training class to. So how do you decide to somebodies and pain line position went to help them roll under more comfortable's position on Windows so you really should move out. I think the most important thing conflict helmeted head. You want to be careful with the neck. You can have injuries to the neck quite easily.

And you don't want to move them around too much and that terms, but if there's something that you know their legs and under something light you can adjustment be more comfortable and be careful with. They look like to have an obvious fracture that through the skin, you don't know them too much because bleeding can occur that can really just if they're in an uncomfortable situation looks relatively simple to maneuver and get them to more comfortable position. I think that's fine. But again, it's best to call 91 want to finish you can get the rescue squad.

There they can assess the situation. First John put you till new newbies coming into the motorcycle world. But what type of advice to try and keep from getting into one of these X comes down to first of all, not just hopping on a motorcycle a lot of time so people just go more so they might not even going to the motorcycle endorsement and I think they just think well I rode a bicycle when I was a kid, or the dirtbike and now I'm just going to get on something a lot more horsepower and torque looks great and everything will be fine.

So I recommend taking one of many motorcycle safety courses out there, give you an idea of the things that will hopefully keep you from your bike down and says Dr. Sweeney talked about all the safety gear that you should be wearing about. I'll agree with you wearing a helmet and I've been a lot of states that don't require a helmet you can take it off if you like, but I if you look at my home about got plenty of dings and gashes from rocks that have flown up from vehicles that would be really nice on my four head if I did have a helmet on and with glasses same kind of thing and even had bees hit me and that would be great 65 miles an hour if I didn't have eye protection on to have a yellow jacket come into my eye so the safety gear that you have to have making sure that you've taken the course of the some idea of the risk that you have with other vehicles are on the road. I know that there are a lot of folks out there that think motorcycles are dangerous, will they can be. If you're foolish if you're not prepared him out looking around and observant but also is that I think a lot of vehicles are aware of how they should drive around motorcycles. So there's always you have to be protected. But I think there needs to be some safety around vehicles around motorcycles. I know, about a minute and 1/2 from our heart break here so let me interrupt you speedy you know anything about the good Samaritan laws and little bit.

Will there a lot of people are scared to get involved in something when they see a problem on the side of the road. They keep thinking they could be sued if they stopped and they help somebody under the good Samaritan laws are supposed to in some way make that much smaller concerned size wondered, I assumed you heard or taken a class you know more about it than I did have to get their laws to protect her acting in the nature of American Art and good nature does not do an appliance system and a Craftsman chicken, craft, and you know for a physician if it does differ a little bit. I believe it our scope of practice, but for the money right along the road you witnessed the accident and you stop and you see that there an responses you don't necessary have to intervene in any other way other than calling 911 or making sure that there greeting or if you need to start CPR things that are lifesaving maneuvers and Internet. Veronica called the very off the better off they are so you don't have to and being or be concerned that you're getting in trouble for that.

Sometimes it's very simple and felt good next month to people in print situation and understand not everybody is Dr. pulling over to help that you can really make a difference in time functions take about.

It always amazes me the traffic will come to almost a complete stop driving and driving.

I drive and you get up to the accident and there's no reason for everybody and slow day off through a bottleneck but I appreciate both of you will come back and talk a little bit more remember where call-in shows 336960830.

Call if you got questions were stored you're listening to the TruthNetwork.com wonderful gifts of the show with us… Britain's got John Holland and would talk a little bit about road safety, motorcycle safety. One thing I one thing I was thinking was that there are lots of times when I'm driving down the road and flashed my lights to warn other drivers that there's a particular hazard up but I'll always think about things that I motorcycle rider would be concerned about like gravel on the road. John, what are some of the things that you till new drivers on motorcycles and remind older drivers on motorcycles is a ride Capt. what are some of the safety issues you go over with them. Well, you know, in the spring and summer when motorcycles come out mostly right we don't ride too much in the winter, but the conditions of the road like you mentioned gravel. The other one which is very common is grasses been blown into the road by someone using a mower and I don't think the homeowner realizes that with only two wheels on the road and you're driving with the back tires are steering with the front.

You can end up losing the bike as I grass becomes actual lubricant on the road so bad in them.

Gravel obviously will be loose under it. So those are the things that we try to remind folks look out for and we actually have signals that the row captains will have been in the front when they recognize a pothole or even a 2 x 4. There's a lot of times you'll see folks that are holy things in pickup trucks or dump trucks and things like that they might lose part of their load that is an object that you can strike and if you strike something for that front tire.

You can either reject you or it can happen to one of my friends with the chapter just recently to buy for the road and actually dented the wheel and blew a tire and she was disabled on the side of the road so you try to do all you can to be observant, what's going on, as were these rights will end up signals so we can track you better be safe… Despite what are some things you'd recommend people carry in an emergency kit in their car just in case they come up on the next great era of God keep a large band education interrupt something and really good economic appointment can be useful in print situation not only accident in general any case that you have an accident or injury attorney kit is one of my favorite tools used in a first-aid kit and the general public can easily find one as long as you learn how to use it at appropriately to be used in the right setting, characters really save a life or limb and think and I think it just the basics. Something pressure on something to wrap and clean object that you can use to cover wound until the emergency personnel can get there. I started college and we got a lot more snow and ice and cold weather than normally was in a couple things I started putting in was a warm blanket and the got these aluminum blankets now that will really keep somebody warm. So I make sure I got one of the aluminum blankets in my kit water I'll rarely go anywhere now with that at least a couple bottles of water that kit in the back.

John, can you think of anything else that would be good to keep an emergency kit will obviously flares or triangles would be great.

Especially when you have a low profile vehicle that vehicle is down one alert the passing public in their vehicles that there is a danger situation and just come a time and backing with Dr. speed ahead with wearing safety clothing was on a ride to Charlotte through Charlotte actually at a 65 miles an hour clear whether the bike went down person was wearing the proper protective gear and got up and basically skim the leather of the leather gloves got a hold of it from rubbing on the concrete and maybe have a little bit red rash on the inside palm of the hand, but walked away from so that safety gear is very important, but you have a bike down the highway, so you want to make sure that you have a way to alert the public what is a low profile for yet another thing is if you see road hazards. You can call 911 and say yeah there's a tree cover and half the rotor I saw a couple cinderblocks or there's other debris on the road.

We can use the 911. To help prevent an accident. The other thing I'm assuming and documented this better than me.

I would assume that these people and 911 no basic first-aid so if I call and report an accident and stop and I keep them on the phone. There lots of things that they could talk me through that I might not know how to do properly connected and help you get a Arbor event that happened in line to get them back up and instruct you through stressful time and make the right situation. I sort of assume with some of the helmets out there that your field of vision is considerably less than what the drivers would be in a car that's an assumption that either of you know that is an assumption I wear 1/2 helmet is full helmet service recorder helmets and then what you actually called a clamshell or half helmet most of the Eurovision protection that's built into helmet actually goes behind the peripheral vision to give you that. But you should rely on just peripheral vision.

But you have the beauty of not being in a caged environment with window columns between the doors and the windshield that you can actually swell your head and see pretty much 360° so for most people it is a problem with the you go up to the mountains and you driving down the Blue Ridge Pkwy. are you driving through some of those roads up there and you see one, dear.

Then you see three here that you think for the year you I was thinking it might be. Oh really challenge to be driving a motorcycle and have a deer hop up in front of me that's in the future. I think I'm to do a little bit more light flashing.

I see people come in and obscenity are just off on the side of the road will we've got one more break and we want you to call Leanne if you got any advice about riding a motorcycle or enjoy riding a motorcycle. If you got a question 336-896-0830 and it's always a little difficult to figure out exactly how to wind down with one of these, so we may cut you off in the middle of your answer John but how long have you been a ride. Capt. oh well, at least five years. How many trips do you design or put together in the year well. The chapter will have one basically one or two times a week and how many guys will use lower hemming guys and girls. How many folks we usually go out on a as far as row captains. What we want at least two, but that can happen that one person might be leaving the ride, but it just depends on the right we could have a charitable ride has 50 other motorcyclists riding along with us okay and so how would somebody join one of these chapters well for the Harley owners group you have to have a Harley-Davidson that's where we get the Harley owners group or hog designation. But there other motorcycle groups as well.

We will be right back.

We appreciate you listening give us a call.

You're listening to the TruthNetwork.com will were heaven just a few technical hiccups this morning.

Sorry about that.

This is Robbie's Christian car guy radio show Bill Mixon filling in. Remember remember Robbie in your prayers today.

He's leading in men's group. I'm sure they are having a wonderful time with good John Holland with this and Dr. Britney speed Doc you still there I said were heaven wonderful excellent and I'm just juggling just a little bit here. John had some wonderful ideas he wanted to share about information that he provides new motorcycle riders. I think another thing that we don't see enough of on the road is motorcycles understanding the spacing distance from other vehicles, even other motorcycle there is still a stopping distance.

You need to observe just as you would not want to tailgate vehicle and another vehicle because was a stopping distance so you gotta be able to cover if they hit the brakes. Same thing with a motorcycle there much lighter but at the same time. Are you still need to have that spacing, which is typically about three seconds and then other motorcycles should not should not be riding side-by-side with staggered formation.

If you have obviously two or more people and the idea being that you have room to move side to side.

If for some reason there is an object in the room and it also that being staggered. I can only be I can be 1 1/2 seconds behind the one that I met a 45° angle and say because I still have three seconds in front of me from the other vehicle so you can stay tight, but you're still giving room side to side, but you have the three seconds in front as you are running this staggered formation and one thing that I get asked questions about this will why have it so tight it will have seconds of it at that diagonal.

Well, the reason for that. If you have too much space between motorcycles. You can get a vehicle in between. And then you can lose side of motorcyclists and you don't have that if you will strengthen numbers of people can actually see the motorcycles as a group instead of smaller low profile vehicle sets were mostly acts of happiness. Motorcycles are low profile and vehicles are used to seeing these low-profile vehicles so it is one of those people with four wheels, but around me I should not try and move in between the chain of motorcycles.

I should give them a little bit of grace and let that long line of 10 or 12 motorcycles try to stay together.

Yes and we should be giving them a little bit more space than we normally would between us and a car in front of us and we've got to understand that if were following a group of motorcycles that they may see some road hazard that they've got to be real careful about, and they might have to slam on their brakes and they can stop a lot quicker than those of us in paired with four wheels. That's correct.

So giving them more space than we would with another four wheeled vehicle is a good idea. Yes, wonderful Doc, how you worked last night in the emergency room out of the all the emergency room patients that come through. I know you get a few people with marbles in their ears, but when it comes to vehicle accidents is that one of the biggest classifications of the victims patients that come through your waiting room and you know they show 100 older adults and 16/100 younger adults. Visit may be empty your motor vehicle collision accident related and in 2017. The study showed that 20% of the needed or related to some type of motor vehicle accident in about one in five others involved in actual injury is very important point that I mentioned in a helmet is important, yes, valuable thing I think that he could possibly wear it quite frequently. See not only motorcycle accident car accident and to be honest, a lot of the motorcycle accident. He are often not an air of the motorcyclists.

It's hard to see motorcyclists when you're in a car. We were talking about vision earlier, and how the motorcycle helmet allow them to have cursory vision and while am sure they need to be careful and diligent as well to the people driving the formula vehicles to also be prudent in checking their blind spot and give this motorcyclists extra space because state they do have different rules for stock energy and how quickly they can stop and how much she should give them. If you are on that motorcycle or your family members on that motorcycle would you want another car you know pushing them or encroaching on that given day you will be much more thankful you did. If you don't get an accident with the motorcyclists as well, though, making sure that the card based motorcyclists are checking our blind spot and just generally overall being driver in terms of that whole three seconds. The idea try it next time you're in the car you know the real count of three seconds slowly and see how much you actually travel to Italy more than you think it'll be.

I know we all think we can stop on a dime.

But it's not always the case.

Definitely definitely frequent visits to the area where my old sheet hit 200,000 miles and I took it to the couples shops to get some suspension work done in the third mechanic that laughed at me and said why don't you just buy a new car my hands that I got me a new Jeep and it's amazing to me. With these new jeeps. I've got a whole lot more blinding area but got this little yellow light that pops up.

This is hall you can't see something that I really wonder how well that little light does a motorcycles versus cars. I don't know but I do know I went out and got some of those old-fashioned little mirrors that you can attach to your big mirror said that that blind spot went away and I just feel a whole lot safer driving down the road so my point is, if you've got one of those fancy new cars.

With that, you little yellow triangle pops up and says ha ha there's somebody you can't say you might consider getting one of the little extra mirrors that you can put it did make that blind spot go away, but more importantly, that could be a motorcycle that's in that blind spot, and we've got to I know I kick myself without that little yellow triangle doesn't do anything as much to warn me as a picture this great big truck and that I can see you have any idea how often you have people show up in the emergency room because they moved into another leading and ran somebody off the road versus head on collision and happen to carry anything here, hung it in second blind spot and actually gripped in the country, though. Daddy taped nine years and I had to turn a look at my blind spot. There were no fancy lip triangle. For me, but I do think we give public in the days and it is very easy when you're tired. I know on my way home from work I have to be extra careful and check my blind when I'm moving over it.

It really is a good habit to get into and you know it also less stressful to drive on the road when everybody is outpacing kind checking their blind road rage is another topic of the be safe and check your blind thought and give people time to move ever because yeah people run off the road all the time and still get a careful, wonderful, and I would encourage us to also say the little prayerful we take a drive I do a good job of that.

When I'm taken a long drive probably death do a much better job say is that little prayer on the short drives to remember were call-in show would love to have you call 68960830 listening to the and TruthNetwork.com welcome Robbie's hobbies. I'm so with the Christian car guy give us a call at 336-896-0830. We've got Dr. Brittany speed with this.

We've got John Holland and John wanted to talk a little bit more about blind spots okay. We talked about the last segment about turning our heads use and mirrors, to get little lazy and just expect electronics to work and let us know there's a vehicle and that blind spot but there's a blind spot that sometimes we miss most of those window columns between the windshield and the front doors. I don't know if you've had this experience where you come in. Simon, you look briefly to the writer to the left and then you start pulling out into the intersection when you realize there's a vehicle there and the reason that you miss that vehicle is primarily because the vehicle coming through the intersection as right away is, going at the same speed as you are and that column covers that vehicle and that could be a large truck not a tractor-trailer but could be a pickup truck.

Imagine how you could lose in that window, motorcycle that's at 90° from you. So it really means for other vehicles to really come to a complete stop at the stop sign when you're at a place road the other sides have the right away, crossing in front of you. So just make sure that there isn't a motorcycle and that path because then you're gonna T-bone that motorcycle or that motorcycles going to go into your side of the vehicle and there's nothing to restrain that motorcyclists. They're just gonna fly often it's it's going to be up to the Lord's mercy on how they survived that accident.

If there traveling in a race be actually will have the world am I going to do that in text the same time. John well, you know that's that's tough what things we need to just quit doing that one of them is speeding and another one is texting while we drive and another one is being angry and yelling and screaming at somebody that's in the car with this, we need to take a really deep breath and remember that it is a privilege that were driving down the road and not walking and take it is a job seriously instead of just a lackadaisical list just got out of not give any thought to it.

Dr. speed brought up the topic when we were all fear about holistic prayer and I would like her to do share will little bit more about that with me and let the audience know what she means by holistic prayer that I think it may be better at. I would like. I felt more comfortable if I knew Jonathan educating on the writer really get advice and be honest I'm learning things. I'm glad to be able to help is one of these.

My elder and he's a dear friend in these one of the smartest people I know and it's a pleasure to do any thing with him to come to cod will be five dollars. I'll get it later might even give you cement okay so holistic. Prayer is is too long a topic to the slide in here to add the community in an emergency department Mexico but by all means you know it important when you have an accident and a good point that makes me even if you cannot or don't feel like you can provide first aid to them when you come across an accident important to remember that even being there is a kind boy, to keep them calm can often help their overall prognosis or how things turn out. If you can keep them calm you can. I've asked them if there is a phone number that they can call family member may be disabled and unable to get their phone sometimes does get overlooked in the emergency department over stabilizing people initially like a family called sometimes even just being there for them you want me to panic you. You can face their family member want to get a hold of their responses, and that might be a big help to them that they'll remember that one thing I'm sure all good emergency room doctors are able to do that is to be calm in a situation that it's hard to be calm in and a lot of this need to just take a deep breath and realize that things will work out if we will think clearly for maybe a little bitter prayer will help get me centered and will help me address all the different things that need to be addressed in a priority of the most serious, to the least serious hat had to have is an emergency room doctor do that man in question that everyday. I think I would go although it does particular rigorous training in and make a dedicated in terms of keeping entered in common. Sometimes prayer.

Make sure that you're in the right mindset.

You really just have to trust the knowledge that you've been building that you've worked hard on obtaining and remember that you can't eat your faith is what they're saying that after you work with your reaction important to remember that you have to reflect everything inside but here calm and in control of the situation and the patient can come up here and there, often in a very bad position, though at remembering that that after Roland really I personally get excited when something serious happened that I have to play that role could, but we were trying for so and am happy to make a difference and you really feel I can make a difference when you're focused in your job like I'm very proud of my daughter who is a child life specialist and she designed the program for the hospital she's in and the emergency room. Part of her responsibility is when the children and the parents come in all flustered and upset and worried and not thinking clearly is part of her job is to help get them centered and relaxed and less concerned than they were before. Where yet. A lot of times we can make a situation worse when were so flustered that were not thinking clearly and in most cases if we would take a deep breath and say a prayer and do that one thing we know needs to be done dialed the 911 and get 911 on the line and show be in front of and do exactly what Dr. speed said is sort of exude a calmness even though we don't really feel the calmness that were standing there and were giving the person some reassurance. I've got 911 on the phone help is coming you can be absolutely sure help is coming and I'm when I asked 911. What we need to do so that you bring down the anxiety and you let the person know doesn't hurt to say I'm to be praying for you while we go through this need you to focus and talk to me tell me what your name is tell me where you were heading you. Is there particular part that feels uncomfortable and had the person talk to you and reassure them. Don't get worried will get through this, but let them focus on something in a way that relieves the anxiety and allows them to not be flooded by the pain that's there but be thinking about what's going on any other suggestions. If you come up on an accident you've got somebody that's in a lot of pain which you should or shouldn't do.I really like John Blair idea. I don't carry one of the great idea that everybody around here and be safe and calling nine online less important thing get somebody on the line get there soon as possible and say a prayer if there's more than one of you one of you have one responsibility and the other have another one person talk to the person is injured and the other person. Keep an eye out for the traffic. We appreciate each in Indiana. I appreciate are to guess there to my favorite people. Add please keep this station and Robbie in your prayers and keep an eye out for what's going on around you while you drive.

Say a prayer for that person.

You see, this seems to be educated.

Say a prayer for that person just cut you off. It's a whole lot better than waving at we want to thank you for being part of our listening audience. I hope you have a wonderful weekend. This is the Truth Network
