John Bridge CBS sports.com one of the super friends of the big six podcast and what a great time to talk about the National Football League, which actually this past weekend look like they were to play good football. Finally, was really good.
I thought this was a borderline really good week which we haven't had too many of John a atonement I am doing fantastic and you know it is a good week. Once we figure out what the heck rubbing the catheters and what is it tell me right now.
I said this the Friday after the Bengals and Dolphins play and I thought okay were spending a lot of time as we should talk about concussions and wide to what was even on the field when he clearly was concussed the week before in the I just went over the bills he should not of played he should not of Québec and then again so we spent all that time.
I just wonder how come we are not talking about the fact that tool was like whipped and slammed to the ground and I said I swear I said that Friday.
If that were Tom Brady, the flag would be out before Brady hit the ground and actually there good Grady Gerrit roughing the passer penalty on Brady wasn't even close to being as bad as to what being whipped to the ground and of course it came out and Arthur Smith life. You look like he swallowed like chewing tobacco look like it was going to throw up on the sidelines.
That was bad to Chris Jones one was bad, but replaced to solve it all.
John yeah you wake up, which was met with aftercare for you. Bring replay and the rest of the new UI and is the subject of how I think I was right. The plaything of the field, but I do think replay could have helped last night situation where you say all right the defender when we had the ball in it. He had, how can he be called for rocking the factor that he got tackled by Garrett Carr Derek Carson incredible Apple they're not Dr. Stroud being called for rocking the pastor it's I think last night situation was a little different than what we seen. I realize that it always want to error on the side of safety when it comes to the quarterback, especially after what happened to rightly should have some sort of mechanism in place to stop the unit affect what happened with Christian global equity essentially is not allowed to recover. It is with NFL rulebook says which was just a little ridiculous as a lot of things I think your point really was that Ms. replays knocking really solve this issue. Anyway, the pit is an issue not I don't really want to talk a ton about the Panthers. Although I am going to ask you about it in the second but the Panthers in the opener there was a roughing the passer calling will blow to the head cold against Brian Burns on the Brown's final drive that really led to the drive and the loss to Cleveland with replay in place they get that call right they overturn the roughing the passer call and may be met.
Rule was five and no and among the am just kidding of course. But give it it would've worked in their favor. What's going to happen is what happens in every sport. If we do that to nitpick every little single thing to call more roughing the pastor is not less, we want more yeah you I think one of problems is I think the medical media pointed out this morning is that haters actually been your roughing the passer called this year there's only been 28 through five weeks with the carbonated. I can think of, or off the top of my head that were horrible calls you measure the Brian Burns one. Obviously the Grady Gerrit and Chris Jones. There's another one earlier this the art last week and so that 4/28. That means 15% of five extras that I can think of the top hat. I'm sure that are more so when you wrestled butchering called it is a 15 yard penalty and completely change the complexion of the game fair 50% of time looking like a problem. It was a home plate umpire would be absolutely losing our minds right so you guys jumped into emergency podcast mode when the Panthers fired Matt rule.
What was like the general consensus of all you guys over there, including will, including Ryan including others was was a good idea for Matt rule to even get year three. Based on what we saw in here to I think that David Pepper was just telling himself, you know why there is like a firecracker two years trying to build something here. He doesn't have a franchise quarterback. Let's see what he can do that made a lot of smart off-season moves in the sense that a they rebuilt this offense of line K. Christian McCafferty finally going to be healthy and so you don't want to have Matt rule there building. All of that up and not get to see what he can do it back and you know what you said you look at the first game against the Browns that the game they probably should've wanted and got hosed over by a bad Paul the second game against a giant team that we now know was good also was a very winnable game and then they dominated the saints, and so it is this the entirety easily could've gone a different way and you know to crack the five no thing but it's not too crazy to think they could at least be ready until media can form wanted the ball would bounce a few different ways so you I don't think it ever looks horrible for letting him have your authority and I know he accord when he had to didn't let this go into the midseason into December.
So I don't without temperamental but I think it was a mercy firing.
I wish you would've said it met rules are really nice guys. We why I am forced to watch Panthers football they are unfortunately no better today than they were when Matt rule took over. I have a question about Josh McDaniels and and I don't know. Maybe it's just because I don't like him I didn't like him in Denver, and I've read enough stories about what he was like behind the scenes. What he seems to me to be a guy was constantly trying to impress his dad and I don't know if I mean Bill Belichick in this regard, or just dad in general, but he seems to try to galaxy brain a lot of things I didn't get trying to go for two with 4 1/2 left. He ended up getting another possession not enough of my am I digging too deep on Josh McDaniels. I like his aggressiveness, especially considering you're playing the chief you know they're going to score and you know they went for important one earlier in the game got that 50 yard touchdown for Devante Adam and when you look at there's just too much being put on him going for two in that situation because if you opportunity don't get it down 3029 and you have to get the ball back to defense have to make a stop if you go for two in getting your 3130 but your defense still have to make a stop to get extra point in its 30 or 30 your defense to like to make a stop at some point, your defense is going to have to stop the chief impersonally. You know I get that you would rather be in the lead with defense, trying to make that so you know I think you probably want to put a little bit of pressure on the chief ticket because if you're up 3137 cheeks probably get the mode worker deploying for a field goal and you look at the cheesecake or did you miss the 41 yard field goal 37 are filled with the got called back on one of the weirdest families of ever seen in any had an extra point. Yuck.
Right. So for Josh McDaniels unusual pretty good picture of 1.0 going into the final five minutes of the game so I dictate the call. I'd like to understand what people didn't like it but in that situation. I know probably being aggressive. So the answer is yes Adam, you are allowing your personal biases against Josh McDaniels to clog your judgments. That's fair. Yet this that I will go always feel that way, I recall making this book I make no bones about it me this shows his bill at least half about my personality and who I'd like and dislike and I like you so I say nothing bad about John bridge, CBSSports.com, pick six podcast super friends as Brandon Staley split sixes. It in Las Vegas is because I will his own wide receiver who was hurt. Keenan Allen Twain from his couch was like what are we doing what is going for basically near midfield with about what is a minute or so to go with her, trying to run another end up winning the game anyway because the Browns super kicker missed the 50 some odd yard field goal, but that but Brandon Staley says that their relationship is now stronger mean that is more fascinating situation and this is where I feel like analytics get complicated because you know there's all these numbers out there that said, will he should've gone for exactly the percentage of said but there is like the psychological aspect that you don't see the fact that they think you Allen is a perfect example of this that he did not want his coach to go. If you go for this and fail and your team loses, that's where you start to lose the walk-through we saw Marcus Peter wanted to punch John Harbaugh last week in week four.
After they walk against the bills. When she didn't kick the field goal to take the lead in the final minutes and then the building up winning 20 through 2010, so that this situation at the Browns win this game.
Brandon Staley I don't know the players let him on the flight home and so you just see the lake. The players understand what the coaches doing to a point but it's if you're saying pay coach we only have a two point lead a full-scale misfortune, one tracking ticket 54 yard field are already noble Rachel can't do this. We had a client in the ground that every timeout so yeah that that was an interesting situation, especially when you have a star player like that. Just call out that coach my final thing for John bridge to CBSSports.com and this goes to how many really good teams are there, are the Giants really good. Or do they have a really good record. Yeah, I'm not sure I would qualify them is really good to see if you don't have to be great to get to the playoffs. You know II don't think their top three team in that conference grant ages did beat the Packers Packers spent the entire week complaining about being in London, you know, like you will get there other ways the date Justin fields in the Bears team. It does not approve the forward pass and they beat Panthers that they kind of eked out a win in week one against the Titans know you know they haven't done the Packer game was impressed, but besides that have been overly impressed by what they died but you have the form one and if they beat the ravens on Sunday and I will put them in the really good category.
Adam is what I promise I will get a hold you to that promise is the thing, even if they don't beat the ravens the rest of their schedule over the next really eight weeks is very manageable.
I heard somebody say I don't think the Giants can make the playoffs, the Giants are going to be in the playoffs unless they become utterly incompetent over the next two months because the schedule just does not allow them to lose a lot of games if there will coats and it does appear that they are well coached Tom over the next two months whether they beat the ravens are not forlorn. Now I just don't see a way they don't win because I don't know how they avoid winning 10 yeah I mean you, dear. You can imagine the schedule you have Jacksonville, Detroit, Houston, stop by the commanders twice to me. There's so many winnable games. It would be absolutely surprising if they don't get the 10 waves this point, all they have to do is go six and 6.500 football the rest of the way they get to 10 waves that should you go to the playoffs so you actually. I do think the giant that is a team you would want to bet on beautiful outbreak out jumping CBSSports.com John bridge on twitter.
I thank you very much. Minutes go podcast. I'm sure you guys doing a podcast later so it's just a drop drop my name to Willis.
Definitely I will let him know I take your time three CBSSports.com
