Today on Summit life with Jeannie Greer best when you apply the principle is one day all week to focus on rest relationships doing that is one day to be rather than to one day to focus on God to focus on relationships and just enjoy his creation there and I'm your host Molly benefits yesterday on Summit life. We began a new teaching series here on the program titled rest and distraction. You know, Jesus promised that all who came to him, he would give them rest in today's society where overworking is the new normal. Most of us simply hear Jesus's invitation as wishful thinking. So is it a nice sentiment from the Bible or can we truly experience this rest that Jesus I'm looking for that answer, and you probably are two right now let's rejoin Pastor Jeannie Greer in Hebrews chapter you love them or know that I have done love me less about succeeding at my job, get all the praise of people make you love me one bit more and if a sale today is to make you love me one bit less. At least with the phrase to you all on the everlasting joy.if you got your approval.

If you're looking at me saying that's my son. Well done. If I walk in the records that you will cherish what a bunch of no account earthlings think about me. It means I got something better. I've got an identity that I don't work for tomorrow because it was gifted to me in Christ is the reason this is so personal and important is for such a long time, I found my identity and how good and successful.

My work was paid by the way I felt about myself was always in direct proportion to how good sermon was not preached on Sunday, which is why the priest a bad sermon by Veronica could scrape me up off the floor Monday morning with a spatula, but I just felt terrible about Mike because it's like I had 35 lonely minutes every weekend to stand up your justify my existence. 5055 lonely minutes of your justify my existence because of their was proving my worth, I can do this well, but I got value and you should respect me how I felt about myself on was based on how well the church is doing. If we had a dip in attendance to select felt terrible. I have a bad week if attendance was great if we got you a surgeon attendance.

I dislike I was competent on top of the world. It led to constant pressures on me in constant worrying and irrational fears have told you.

Looking back on it now just a silly but I used to drive in the church of the weekend you come in and to services and I would have this fear that I would show up and that would be the day that we do Sunday all of you all of you decided to go to another church and just be me in the middle room with Veronica Simpson on the front row and should have been her headphones listening to Matt Chandler because he thinks he's funnier than I am.

Anyway, that would be it.

W how this whole thing came crashing down and so these irrational fears that I have, but it was because my identity was tied up into how well I perform to hear what that meant.

Even when I took a day off. My soul was not rest my soul was always anxious because my identity was built on the success success that I was responsible to obtain. If I hear some of your writing things down like this down apart from Christ, you will work even when you're resting with Christ. You can rest even when you're working even when you take a day off you take a month off in your soul still to be at work because you got to establish your identity. You got to obtain your success at all rest on you and that means you can never really rest. But if you're in Christ, you can rest even when you're working with is not on you. Which leads me to number three Christ my security God declared Israel if I rescued you and your helpless slaves will surely I'll take care of you know that your beloved sons, and you should take a day off. You should reflect on that you should reflect on on who I am to you now know the early church. They shifted the Sabbath day from Saturday the seventh day to Sunday, the first day and the code of the Lord's day because Sunday was the day that Jesus had resurrected and they felt that that day. Best commemorated their salvation yet on that day. They were to reflect on the exact same things.

If God. Paul said to not spare his only son for us. We were his enemies. Now that were his children will he freely give us all things that we need you. God took care of my sin of slavery may, of course, is to take care of my day-to-day needs. So we see that the Sabbath was fulfilled in Christ. Christ, my righteousness Christ my identity, Christ my security but listen just because the Sabbath was fulfilled in Christ doesn't mean we stop practicing the principle of the Sabbath in our day-to-day lives.

You see, I would say that a lot of overzealous theologians will count as it will settle will fulfilled in Christ will lead approximate all anymore but got loaded into creation. It didn't make its first appearance of the wall got loaded into creation, which means all people in every time. Our to practice this principle of the rhythm of work and rest in bed if you will let me giveyour what I want to do is show you that the Sabbath principle shows up, not just in one day a week that you take off it shows up in multiple places in the Christian life reader to see the Sabbath principle come into play. Let me give you a handful of them.

One day a week for mass renewal and relationships will start with the obvious one. The best way you can apply the Sabbath principle is taken one day off a week that you focus on rest renewal and relationships. Again, that is one day to be rather than to do one day to focus on God to focus on relationships and just enjoy his creation. Now, here, here it doesn't have to be on a Sunday when the early church changed it from Saturday to Sunday they were showing that it was not a particular day that was essential for most of you it should be on a Sunday. I'll tell you why. The second but the big point is if at least one day a week where you cease from your labors and enjoy God and the gifts that he is given public worship should always be a part of it which is why say that for most of you it should be on a Sunday public worship should always be a part of that because your relationship with God is central to your life and of God, is the point the provider and the security know that the best way to do is come together and be able to celebrate that, but it's also the day to be with your family to be outdoors to be rather than to do and just to do things that you enjoy and you so I can afford take a day off. I'm telling you you can't afford not to. God promises to multiply the other six days you one quick little, almost silly example this for the first time I really since the promise and power my life I was couching I was a junior and never to the Sabbath now made all the other 10 commands, but I did not take a Sabbath because I had studied hard to do well and it will convicted about second semester my junior acid you know what I'm obey God in this and Emily and I for some reason I signed up that semester for an absurd number of classes was like 21 hours which is just crazy to do 21 hours. Have you thought I'd ever had and I said I will not study on Sunday.

I'm going to that they should be for church to be for reading good Christian books.

It is good to be for hanging out some of my my my friends and enriching those relationships at the Internet semester I particular the same on hours and cut my productivity go on seventh. I had the highest GPA that semester. I did of any of my semesters of college, and I think I was to show them you cannot give me to you.

Take one day a week that you offer to me you want.

So I multiply the others.

The first the second when you're Mike's price you just hear me out. Okay tight I know you like I got taught typing everything I not. Here's why. Hear me out.

Tithing is an application of the Sabbath principle go back and read Deuteronomy 7 and eight you'll see where he ties these things together. Tithing means giving a least one. The first temp of your income back to God.

You don't do it because you got an extra 10% of your budget that you just can't figure out what to do with you do it just like they took the Sabbath day off.

As a declaration that God is the provider and ultimately you trust him to make the ends meet, not yourself that's on people say to me.

Well I can afford to tie I say you can't afford not to. God said, you obey me by giving me 10% you think you can afford you want. So I multiply the remaining 90% documents when you exactly how he does it I just say that for 29 years now.

I have tied faithfully on what God has given me and I can tell you for 29 years. You cannot out give God an ounce after being a pastor here for 18 years. I've heard story after story after story of people who just believed and trusted God gave them the first and the best and help not one time have I ever heard a store where somebody out gave God. It's just like with the six days principal you lesson. You can't go to multiply the rest. It is those times in my life where I have not obeyed the principle that I've gotten into financial trouble. There's another one I might surprise you what you can apply the Sabbath principle you ready sleep take you one of my favorite passages in all the Bible and I got a tattoo to my wrist right about that someone 27 lessor built a house or to go to labor in vain what the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain is in vain to rise up early and go like the rest eating the bread of anxious toil, for he gives to his beloved sleep. According to that song.

What is the sign that you are beloved by God sleep looking I hear I can see that several of you are beloved by God. Right at this very moment. Okay sleep the sign which you are beloved by God. We are the problem. I was sleep if I'm asleep, who's got the city rebuild the house to get the crops on the day someone, threesomes, small service relives as will goddess God intended sleep to be a time every day like a daily Sabbath you lay down on your back horizontally and just declare to God with your posture. I'm not God.

Did you ever have to lie down because you're never tired of your transcript with you.

So maybe this is helpful, but the more responsibility I didn't like the more trouble I seem to have sleeping and awake. About 33 30 the morning worried I wake up worried about who's watching the city. The city of my family. The city of this church, the city of whatever other responsibilities I have. See, here's what I've learned God insist I lay down each night, like a daily Sabbath just remind myself that I'm not him, and when I laid down to sleep I am basically saying God I'm turning myself all, but it's okay because you never turn off you stay on and got him go to sleep but it's okay because you never sleep and there's lots to worry about. I'm not going to beg there's nothing left to do.

I'm not going to bed because there's nothing left to worry about. I'm going to bed because you told me to because you said about blood by you.

I would sleep and that means that if I'm sleeping you must be taking care of everything else in your handle on it when I can and I know when I wake up at 330 that is not a time to God's appointed me to be awake. That is a time God has appointed me to be asleep because he's got the city and he's got the city I can rest because it's in his and not my back with the rest of it, but I wanted to quickly share a little bit about our brand-new resource estimate. We've just begun. This new teaching series titled rest and distraction our gift to you, my perfect next step. Now, let's return for the conclusion of today's message here is Pastor Jane some article. Why would rely Christian, but it was a small business owner who was talking about his promise. Sleep good. My golf on smelter and he said, as I was waking up to 33 in the morning. I was always worried about what was happening in the business. He said he said and then he says I did.

I just hired these data: virtual assistance.

Basically it's somebody on the summer in Asia that you can hire for your pretty good rate that you can give tacit duty since around 530 you email them the things that you needed to do and they work on them while you're asleep when you wake up the next morning they have them all done and you can you can take him back up. He said soaps hadn't given my virtual assistant.

I think she wasn't in the bed and given her these things to do and he said, but I thought the biggest pressure I have is a worry about all the stuff you know and the night. He sits on a single email when afternoon 530 I said dear and called her name. I'm really worried about these five things would you please worry about them. For the next 16 hours so that when I know you so I can know that you are so you said I got I got an email back the next morning from herbal sweet email about 830 said. Dear Mr. so-and-so just want you know I stayed up all night last night worrying about these five things in our worried about them so you can sleep and now ready to give them back to you so that you can take him back over this and I don't know really how to explain it, but somehow just waking up little night knowing that she was over there worried about that just meant that I didn't have to know that's silly. I get that. But what I've said that I thought that is actually what God is told me to do a Psalm 127 God said you go to sleep because I got it I got it for right now I got the city and I can handle city better than you anyway so you can lay down and sleep and you can declare to me that Al Gore the city. I'll finish the house, I'll pay the bills. That's my job. Your job JD's job just to be faithful and after a bit of faith like a lot of sleep, because leaving is an Seo.

Let me give you one really practical application form for the sermon you're ready. This might be your favorite sermon point I've ever given you the summer church gets more sleep. I don't apply right now like wait an hour to rest, but whatever. But those who study these things say that the vast majority of us need to be getting more sleep.

My last.

They say that only one to 3% of the population is sleeping too much, and those are called teenagers. By the way, okay what everybody else is about is not getting enough sleep, but you'll initial contacts up until 1879. The average American slept 11 hours a night. What happened in 1879 the light both women of the lightbulb and that's when everything changed so the point is the idea of the sleeper getting now.

It's a historical anomaly when you compare it that this is not how were designed and I say most of us need to be thinking about how to declare war, trust in God, not lessen the plight of this or lack of sleep contributes all kinds of health problems to show that were not designed like that. It makes us less efficient. I often tell his mom told anyway. I most want to miss Ted talk, and it was this neurologist explaining how the brain worked. And by the way, I'm not a neurologist, so I'll probably get some details are wrong, see might have.

Whenever there is a cringe when I tell this but the basic point of this is correct okay basically that the mind is not clear itself of waste away that other parts of the body do because of that have blood vessels all through soap instead of most cells give their waste of the blood vessel takes it out, but the brain doesn't have that.

So in the brain, which is an enzyme that carries the waste away. But here's the catch. This triggers that that the catch is it only releases that enzyme when you're asleep so literally at the end of the day we fought your mind is all dumped up and you can't think straight. That literally is true. Your mind is so full of waste because you haven't been to sleep because it hasn't carried it out. It just shows you that God is not designed you to be on all the time he designed you to turn off is God's mind never gets dumped up in God is always thinking clearly that you got a later back in the glare.

I'm not God's asleep is a way that you apply this principle of of of of of Reston Sabbath. There is 1/4 daily Sabbath daily Sabbath. Here's what I mean by that means you have daily times that you unplug and you refocus yourself that probably was more of these is doing a morning quiet time is a time is most important part of my day where I just can't re-center myself on the gospel, not God and I told him about the day that's coming up. It means building times throughout your day to re-center yourself. I know of a pastor who asked his assistant to build a five-minute space between each one of his meetings to so we can have some time to pray about the next meeting re-center his motives and his values people pause his day literally multiple times just to rest in Christ. Sometimes it means just unplugging and letting your mind go to rest about this one nap to be like this really is the best sermon ever like seeing men take notes, but had never taken notes of a sermon before recent study found that a 30 minute nap three times a week will cut your heart attack risk by the percent.

Other studies show that people who nap are actually more productive than people told this is the greatest sermon ever I loved about his last what yearly vacations you locations throughout the Bible we see Jesus commanded his people to take time off to remind themselves of their not ones are doing the work. This couple examples will click on this Mark 631 because so many people were coming to Jesus and knowing that they did not even have a chance to eat. Jesus said to them, to the disciples come with me by yourself so quiet place and get some rest was interesting is that this phrase follows this one because so many people were coming they want and rest because all the work was done, there was still alive. They a lot of people that needed stuff and just a stop. We had to go over your rest because when we were created to do this nonstop. And most important thing for us is to get some rest to reconnect with her father. Otherwise, what we do for him is not really good to be any good anyway. Now I realize you didn't get when taken on a vacation, but that's the principle of Sabbath, and it's the principle of it on my favorite examples accept one. Jesus is just given the great commission to his disciples. Great commission take the gospel to every nation never had a larger assignment been given to a less capable go preach the gospel to all these different languages. Most of you only know one language.

It's all on you. Now the first assignment that I want to give you is do nothing. Wait. Wait for the Holy Spirit. They waited for 10 days before they did a think I'm not trying to imply that that Jesus took them on vacation for 10 days that they went to Barbados really like that they start our room night. I get that when vacation per se, but it's the principle of it because they step back and if nothing else is reflected on the fact that this was God's work, not theirs and they were his instruments. They were the ones you had to own it and own all the responsibility for I see a matter principle that there are times that you and I disconnect so that we can reconnect with God we connect with others and that becomes the source of our strength. We were actually in the fight in the battle by the way, when I say vacations I know I'll lose some of you you like I can afford a vacation.

I mean, time for you.

Just unplugging focus on relationship fellowship with God without a state patient going to local parks get together and play games with family and friends loose just a handful of ways I think you can put Sabbath rest in the practice you stop and you proclaim Christ as your identity is your righteousness and your security. This is what I think Jesus was talking about. Matthew 11 when Jesus said, in the OU labor and are heavy laden up to the rest. Take my yoke upon you, Lord, for me from gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

For my yoke is easy and my burden is light to first think that statement sounds confusing to Jesus, for two reasons.

One is Burton was the cross house that alike burden yoke yoke an instrument used to work but doesn't the last thing that tired people need is a yoke they need a mattress. They need a pillow. They need a vacation is the key. Jesus was not offering them an escape from labor he was offering new equipment in the labor yoke got sooner places for two different heads so yoke. Jesus is offering for you is are you going one is available in Jesus done and when you and somebody much stronger than you were carrying a heavy load who ends up doing all the heavy lifting that in what Jesus is offering you is not just a temporary vacation.

This is gonna take your documents raise offering all new way alters Raymond's rows and all that thing out.
