Making Sam legend bigger than ever in his empire own Bellatrix writes in his book out where the West begins for mule cults life was the American story written in capital here to tell the stories.

Ashley Lubinski, the former cohost of Discovery Channel master of arms, former curator in charge of the Cody firearms Museum and president of the gun code LLC years famous quote got me and call back what actually happened five legend: why the first person to make a commercially successful revolver and are not familiar with a revolver. You think about the technology. So pistol or rifle.

I got all five or 6 pounds. Early on, and you would love each round into the kind allowing the seller to rotate in order to fire the next round which is a revolutionary concept environment prior to really industrial.

At any 19 and overseas were individually made our armory so those are typically single shot is important to note that repeaters have been around since the 1400 1 billion market anywhere in the military. Military purpose will slow to adopt new things really become civilian and military firearm around the time Sam called to make revolver important people read yourself. There were a revolving mechanism as far back 1500 and inspiration from the things he might be hard to believe they had never seen this firearm that was produced in people didn't know about. He did create one now so famous and so synonymous with that name easy to just associate him with the first life now and he has to get really serious really quickly because his father with his lifestyle and he started Amherst Academy in Massachusetts for school he excelled from the school and so he went to see on the core about that for many years. Around 1830 on Shatt Paschal account he would become fascinated with the ships rotated. There is also a wooden guy and he really started to try to create what would become one of the most iconic firearms in American history and international history initially over to England to his revolver noticed the first time that he takes out of 1835 in United States. He does take out a patent actually anything, 36, one in February and one in April. Patent process the 1790s, but was kinda hot mass and so there wasn't really a full movement to patent your invention until this time. That nation that was the patent act of 1836 and so after 60 see all kinds of patents and people suing each other trying to make things" really gets in on the ground floor and with his time five shot revolver and loudly with a handgun. Initial patent was actually for a rifle as well and so he would make love to, but he loved his rifle and he would make several different designs off of that revolving mechanism, and so he starts to make what is ultimately called Patterson revolver is the one with his first real product because his factory that he put into place in Paterson, New Jersey and now is ultimately funded mostly by his family and its business failure for him. He really struggling business and company went bankrupt a lot, but the one thing that he buys with the salesman and there are stories and talking firearms on the bottom of the time to try to get people to purchase this firearm so he maybe lacked incomplete business management prowess. He made up for in making people excited for his product. One of the more iconic revolver that came Patterson and all the different variations of Patterson was the walker revolver and it was ultimately designed in concert with a Texas Ranger named Samuel Walker. It was used by them on the battlefield in Texas and that God the caliber and issues you seen incorporation with colluding letter so it actually swings down and helps to load the guy in the packet and unfortunately you fired wine like I have never had any type of touch, so he would often fall down and in stock in the cylinder backup and fired again revolutionary for its time, but it was one of those things that I can't even imagine being on the battlefield and not being familiar with the revolver and expecting a single shot gun coming coming at the barrel of a repeating firearm. It doesn't have to be reloaded every time. So it's one thing that is progressive and also incites a lot of fear into people who are on the receiving end, the same thing about this patents that is a smart move for called is that he owns the legal right to make this type of technology. So basically couldn't really get his stuff together always in his business side the market. People could not make that time and configuration and she actually was able to get the patent extended so didn't expire until the 1850s, the market for 20 years, but there were people waiting in the wings, ankle, did make the stops and one of the steps is not getting any role in white who worked for him who developed this ingenious piece of technology where instead of having to awkwardly load the revolver from the front of the cylinder he actually needed to board three cylinders you actually could load it from the back of the gun which was really impressive at times increase the speed of everything anybody tickle Ankle is like now and I think you and Ron White lead goes across the street is minimizing the and not really accurate because is minimizing who would become one of the other iconic names with the revolver early on in history and he had his own very complicated, it is likely to die is known for.

Unfortunately great deal with as a war broke out, where he had to legally defend his patents. But when the war breaks out and everyone has to make many friends as possible that a lot of patent infringement, and he very much gets hit hard without the mother was smart enough to make the deal, but we don't talk about: light.is minimizing the smart as soon as close patent expired and seven Smith & Wesson popped up quickly and told the story of Samuel Colt story about so much for manufacturing sales itself in salesmanship. The story of Samuel Colt we last left off role in white, leaving Colt's new design was rejected white took his board through idea over Colt's competitive Smith & Wesson was returned to the story of sample with our storyteller Ashley Benson got some competition in the market for called names are still pretty well known today for firearms. And in some way. Some configuration are still around. And so I'm trying to get into the mass production of firearms for the American Civil War, which started in 1861 that years after you start getting more revolvers on the market and become a lot more efficient on the battlefield. Prior to that, the officers carried in the Civil War soldiers purchasing firearms. I including Colt prices were relatively recent for the time soldiers individuals that would buy the gun if they were not issued anything and so it becomes kind of a change in the way that we perceive technology on the battlefield because a lot of repeating technology and rifle farm that is available during the Civil War, but it's not adopted as readily and dispassionately as people adopted the revolver quote why is not always known for being easy to get along when he was a great salesman and a great I inventor he steps towards the end of his life and one of the issues and one of the controversy that surrounded his life was not leaving the American Civil War client down in the South that he continued to sell two tensions were brewing between the union and the Confederacy claimant.

The second the war broke out, was happening they were going to be no guns going down there by the damage is already done with logic and reason are for continuing to supply firearms to sell up to the war. It really did so much damage to his personal reputation and get a regimented unit during the Civil War and hopefully he was hoping that would help everything. I'm also title before he died to a room and so part of the story is not a lot of the guidance that we associate court" with coal Colt single action Western clothes and a lot of people still see his name with design that happened after he died by his widow, who is in my opinion responsible for legacy continuing on, she came as Elizabeth Jarvis quotes she was born her socialite family and Hartford, Connecticut, where they factory would end up. She very quickly becomes the major shareholder close patent firearms manufacturing company and also passionate about his father is a minister so she will seem very close to the church charity for the rest of her life.

She was one of the richest women in America at the time she inherited millions of dollars in the controlling interest" her brother actually ran the company for a little bit after another designer would take the company die and she had a tragic story as well so she lost her husband and she also lost initially to children. She was pregnant. When uncle died, and I believe she lost one other child only sliding child named Caldwell Colt and so she was kind of marred by all that tragedy, but she was so well liked by the community that she was known as the First Lady Hartford now is because of her creation and gardens. Her love of the workers in the factory and her clips for the fact that Confederate sympathizers burned down the factory and she rebuilt and she retreated down iconic with the factory and she always took care of the workers called manufacturing facility actually house leather workers.

They had sports teams for them. They had music performances and educational opportunities for the family that worked for the cold factory and she continued to really cultivate an environment and learning that she did which was more or less successful when she created a church on-site kind of the entire town called self as it's called one of her hopes was that executives and workers alike could go and worship fascinating architecture look at it today. It incorporates so many assets technology revolving cylinders built into the architecture tool everywhere. There's something related to firearms and of course she had to immortalize her husband many different ways.

She had statues erected where he's doing the model is called. She also included a beautiful stained glass pane and the church where she casually incorporated sample into the collection so she wanted to not only the company and take care of people in Hartford. She also immortalize his lifetime that you hear stories about sample and they're not in a very favorable light. He was difficult to get along with that he struggled sometimes as a businessman and so when you hear call today, you don't always hear that story anything. Elizabeth played a very big role in kind of rebranding after his passing and creating on these things, where his statue surrounded by community prosperity and change a little bit. The way that the company was perceived now.

She died in 1905 she has been significantly Colt really was getting started. At that point and so her legacy still stands that all of the gardens on Jackson took her property arms near the house that Schinkel had lived Daniel together and she turned it into a home for the widows of ministers circle with all that taking care of people in the community, but there are also some iconic developments that happen they put coal on the map in terms of design and functionality and the future of the company and this is done by several designers that work for the factory whose names are lesser-known and I would be the designers of the Colt 1873 single-action army which is been seen in pretty much every Western film ever made, and then also they were on the forefront.

Automatic technology technology very loosely as not, you have a time where you press the trigger and continuously fires until you either release the trigger of ammunition which happened most the time when the fire malfunction. They worked went very well. John Moses Browning early on to create what's called the Comeau 1895, to believe that you 95 that are being used in the battle of San Juan Hill in 1898 and he also works with Browning to create a semiautomatic pistol. Technology means every time you press the trigger advised fires one round on any chambers around you can fire another one that is associated with that other various versions before this is the Colt model 1911, which is still very very popular today so you got a man you got a troublemaker.

The idea you got a personality with an idea and he takes that he was not always successful surrounds himself with people that you also know what they're doing and I guess to some extent, he surrounds himself with the right woman because she was able to really be the face of the company and run the company with her brother for a little bit and basically build up this entire dictation for her husband. We don't always hear her name because you got a woman that's now inheriting action facility after her husband's death and rebuilds that she needs to rebuild and does so much for community and because of her generosity because of her charity. I think we remember sample in a different light and she's ultimately responsible for how we perceive all about today are good and different, a terrific job on the right special for former cohost of the Discovery Channel's best reforms, former curator in charge of the coded firearms and president of she was so right troublemaker person surrounded himself with the right people the right after his premature death in 1862. His bride Elizabeth would live another few right so Colt greater success and recognition story of Samuel Colt and the birth of the revolt you want all Americans need life insurance but have diabetes, high blood pressure or on anxiety meds.
