This is where you have even this is our American stories we tell stories about everything here on the show including your seven American stories.com. Some of our favorites. Next story from the American Civil War Museum in Richmond, Virginia that an ordinary object that has an extraordinary story behind it, but many didn't know until recently, Chris Graham, curator of exhibitions at the Museum with the story right.

It's not die. It's roughly woven and think too much about it because it's not a gun is a sword. This one. Plaintiff witnessed so much during this artifact in early 19th century 1905, 97, said this is a it was woven by Negroes on a plantation that donated this object is a object that demonstrates that material shortages and the comparative so that we had is that I got forces also by identifying it as something that was made by one of their enslaved people they could say that yes they with us in the same way the ways she self emancipated and what that means is that over the course of the 20th century as those people wrote about define what counts history of experience left out was made plantation in Darlington County South Carolina was made by this layperson was enslaved by Mandy Mitchell.

Mitchell King was a Scottish immigrant United States came over 12 or something but establish himself in Charleston became a lawyer and judge respected and extremely wealthy man plantations from Georgia to Carolina growing chiefly rice so he had a plantation near Savannah near to work.

United's army was encroaching on the sea islands of South Carolina and Georgia early in the war and United's army goes insulation will take what chance they can get to escape to it.

Slavers knew this day knew it measures to move their enslaved populations out of the way and so wherever you see United States Army going you see enslaved people running to the Army, but you also see slave owners taking their populations in this great of genes from for you might say going inland and so Mitchell King moved his population of his rice plantation near Savannah to Darlington South Carolina to grow cotton plantation near Island by a man died in his widow was killed by one of occasionally killed moving into a landscape population is broken up with tears. Mitchell King family therapy about 525 Savannah to Darlington South Carolina to grow, they didn't know to be the place waiting no and you can be secure from the temptation to escape to freedom.

And so it's this context that one of these people love this piece for this population was still on.

It was actually an island was that his son still plantation dispute emancipation. He wanted his people to continue working on that plantation and so use the freedmen's Bureau and agent to negotiate a contract with his family slave population were now free to contract for them to through the rest of the year five accounting and so this is perhaps I don't know the conditions under which they negotiated a contract certainly was. Maybe the first time weighted were able to negotiate from a position of freedom on matters in terms that free people negotiate contracts for work, labor or something happens that her agent comes back and looks around says we have working for you rice cotton this place look shabby. You should send them back to Savannah and that's actually what happened populations plantation back to Savannah and plantation had to scramble to find laborers from the existing population around and so there's some questions and choices they made to go back to Savannah today.

She was on the was it because they would rather grow rice and cotton was because they probably had family on other forms that they knew that there was a place called maybe they wanted to be there about rice.

Maybe they want to go home now. They have this opportunity.

Whereas in 1862. My elsewhere, but now maybe they had they had the choice to migrate again but on their own terms and a special thanks to Monty Montgomery production and Chris Graham of the American Civil War in Richmond, Virginia.
