This is Lee Habib Mrs. L American stories we tell stories about everything here on the show including yours. Send them our American stories.com next story from our regular contributor and clear, and is a teacher organist and choir director is also a World War II history buff, you can find her stories@thenaptimeauthor.wordpress.com up next to story on the Bremerton Naval yards in Washington here's an tell the story of all tell the 1940 Franklin Delano Roosevelt made a campaign speech in Boston which is going inside we know that didn't last more than a year because change is impactful in American history profound impact on everybody in the country in different places differently. One place that had a really interesting historical action with the whole Pearl Harbor attack, and with the way World War II Bremerton state of Washington. Bremerton is not Metropolis. In fact what actually grew because of some needy connections across Puget Sound from Seattle on a peninsula which is a peninsula sticking out from the larger Olympic Peninsula on Puget Sound does have access to the Pacific Ocean, which is why in 1891 it was picked to be the site for the Puget Sound Naval station, which was the first naval establishments in the Northwest.
Pretty big deal because backplanes if US ships needed major work, they would have to go all the way down to mere islands and barnyard have to go all the way out to British Columbia so this gave a facility where American ships could be tended on American soil. Now over the years the yard grew and changed significantly. Back in 1928 and work on the very first US aircraft carriers Saratoga Lexington Saratoga spent enough time in Puget Sound that eventually got the nickname Sarah from the workers there, and as the fleet was authorized to build up by Congress in 1934 there was more work again in the yard for the people who were there on the invasion of Poland in 1939 FDR declared a limited national emergency and the dog more dry docks for ships and expanded the ones that were there and began preparing to be able to build ships themselves also became involved in something called deep permit. See once Germany went to war with Britain.
Germany started mining British shipping lanes and 80s magnetize my which of course is a problem for any ship that's coming through those areas.
So one of the jobs that was done in shipyard area was creating these big electromagnetic coils that would actually deem magnetize the holes of ships so they wouldn't attract mines. Ideally also the battleships of the last specific fleets were getting overhauled and repaired during this time, which kept about 6000 employees very busy.
Now the first real look at war that Bremerton got the first first-hand luck as it were was actually through a foreign visitor. The yard hosted the HMS war site the summer of 1941. This British chap had been pretty badly beaten up in the Mediterranean and had limped its way across the Pacific to Bremerton which was exciting for the citizens to host these British sailors and a lot of them, invited them into their homes and try to show them hospitality and were naturally also very curious about the ship though course I kept up a pretty strong security even stronger than shipyard itself had had in past days because times are changing but still, even though it was a look at Laura look at people who experience it more still felt fairly far away until December. December 7 Bremerton is according to memories of people who were there, stay for December in the Pacific Northwest. People were palaces coming home from church out and about with friends, going to their jobs when word came through that Pearl Harbor and I like some different parts of the country that were further away from Hawaii Harbor was not entirely know your name on Bremerton and it was a bit of a shock, because while Hawaii mileage -wise is still a good distance way just geographically felt uncomfortably like I guess it's a like a neighbor had been hit and they wonder the people in the area wondered if they might be next in line Bremerton. The yard is where the damage ships would come they had the facility place on the West Coast really that would be able to repair any damage battleships so as soon as word came out that Pearl had been hit. People started looking to the skies. They were concerns and Claire was a teacher, organist and choir director, which is also one heck of a World War II expert in both when we come back more. This remarkable story Bremerton moving towards these kinds of stories have been all around this country. Arsenal democracy was put into hard more of this remarkable story and clear towing story Bremerton Naval yards to tell Americans if you love the stories we tell about this great country and especially the stories of America's rich past. One person wrote about hearing shots while he is writing the ferry home and walking out to see a rifleman standing in the front of the boat fire into the water because their minds and Puget Sound. He hoped that they get that the war site, which was still docked in the yard was turned around to face the word and every afternoon for piano being disconnected from all of the lines connected to the land and all buttoned up just in case they had to go into some sort of combat situation they start imparting barges in front of the different dry docks to try and put up some sort of barrier to protect ships that were being repaired barrels of water in boxes of sand and rakes are put up around the shipyard tape crisscrosses were put on Windows just in case. Blasts might blow out the glass and people start looking for ways to create area shelters as well. There basements of some buildings that would serve but also just in case you can get them in time. Ship boilers are brought out and cut in half to make certain dome-shaped shelters that at least according to the signs and them could get 30 people inside and to give them some sort of protection in case the bombs started falling.
It was just lots and lots of planning a short time trying to figure out what we do.
If the Japanese came. If the invasion happens invasion by the Japanese. Of course we know did not come to Washington state. The invasion was of the U.S. Army actually a week after Pearl Harbor on December 14. Lots of army trucks started rolling into Bremerton, which is quite another big change for this Navy town and tents cropped up and playfully old and in parks and soldiers were sleeping in people's gardens or garages are finding lodging in different houses and build up a lot of space and that was also amplified.
A couple weeks later when the 303rd barrage balloon battalion rolled into town as well. If you see pictures of Britain during World War II.
You might've seen pictures those big silvery balloons floating above London or at the beach is also when you are doing different invasions in Europe and things barrage balloons were designed in Britain, diesels were actually created in the US and the idea was that these balloons with long steel cables coming down from them would actually stop planes from divebombing of plains tribes divebombed the tables could share off the wings of the planes and would provide protection to the ground area so Bremerton was full of barrage balloons wherever they can find a good open space to plant one. They planted one, but the barrage balloons. An interesting addition to the town cause some problems because the high wind came up and he was able to bring the barrage balloons down in time, they might snap their cables and go flying off. There's quite a few stories of barrage balloon cables checking out chimneys, horror, powerlines, and since the barrage balloons also were flammable. There was one unfortunate incident in 1943 where one actually blue on the ground and injured seven soldiers were taken care of at one of them critically. So all these precautions, all these different things protect Bremerton were changing the whole landscape of life in this town and that fact affect the shipyard itself was trying to camp its number of employees because there was a lot of work coming in the town itself was getting so full that there stories from people working at the YMCA. During this time.
Just go and set up cots on the gym floor under The Gym and They'll Be Rented out. They Have People Actually Reserving Seats for a Place to Sleep in a Place to Keep Their Belongings While They Are Looking for More Permanent Lodgings in the Cover on the Pool Table at Night and Having a Couple Guys Jump up on Their Knees. That Is a Bad I Heard Stories of Hotels Actually Renting out One Bed to Three Different People and One Person Be Working First Shift and Then They Go off to Work in the Next Person Would Come and Sleep the Night Shift and They Go off to Work the Next Person That While They Were off Work As the Shipyard Was Looking for Workers They Just Couldn't Seem to Fill the Slots Quickly and Now No Matter How Full the Town Was Getting. And so the Teenagers in Town Recruited to for Different Jobs Which Worked out Well Because the City Was so Crowded That the Schools Could Actually Hold All of Their Students at One Time so the Students Were Going to School in the Public Schools, At Least in Two Shifts Half the Students When the Morning HalfLytely Afternoon so There Was a Certain Amount of Time for out Side Employment As Well for the Kids and It Was a Very Very Busy Time for Everybody Yard Was Keeping Busy with A Lot Of Different Projects.
Of Course There Is Shipbuilding and There Is Refitting Other Things I Two Days before the End of 1941 the First Pearl Harbor and Ghostwriting Yard That Was a Pretty Significant Event.
The Ship's Fellowship Wasn't Really a Ghost. Japan Had Reported Five US Battleships Were Sunk during the Attack on Pearl Harbor, Which Actually US Was Able to Salvage Get Back to Bremerton Repair and Put Back into the Fight.
The First of These Ghosts As They Were Jokingly Named since Ships Have Been Declared Dead in Our Back out about Was the USS Tennessee and It Was under Its Own Power, Even Though It Had Been Battered by Bomb Hits and Also by Debris from the USS Arizona's Explosion Next Day, December 30, the USS Maryland Made into Port As Well. The Ship Yard.
He Took a Break from Lots of Other Projects and Put People to Work on It Because We Desperately Needed Ships in the Pacific and They Were Actually Able to Turn Those Ships around Get Them Repaired and Get Them Ready to Fight Upgrade As Well.
In Just 53 Days Maryland and the Tennessee Had Sailed Back out in February the Saratoga Aircraft Carrier Was Back at the Shipyard to Because It Had Been Hit by a Torpedo Not Drink Pearl Harbor, but, on January 11 and Then by May 1. The Third Pearl Harbor Ghosts. The USS Nevada Had Made It to the Shipyard Just to Get Some Perspective on Level Damage on the Ships Took about 700,000 Man-Hours to Get the Nevada Ready to Go into the Fight Again. The Last Two Pearl Harbor Ghosts to Show up for the USS California and the USS West Virginia and Damage the Most and They Had Been Sunk and Flooded and Full of Silty Soil and Needed Quite A Lot Of Work but Eventually They Were All Turned Back into the Fight. And These Five Ships Were Not at All, Only One Set the Yard Work Done during World War II. All These Workers and All These Employees Coming in and Teaming up to Work Together to Repair and Equip These Ships Did a Tremendous Job There about 32,500 Employees in This Workforce and during the World War II. They Built 50 New Ships and Repaired 363 Was a Pretty Pre-Tremendous Aid to the American War Effort and Special to Monty Montgomery for the Production of a Piece Is Unclear Who Was a Teacher and Organist and Choir Director Is Also World War II History Both World War II and History Contribute Be from All Walks of Wife. You Don't Have To Have a PhD in History, No History, Virtual Storage, My Goodness. 50 New Ships, but the Crazy Memberships Folks Story in a Way of Your Small Democracy Story Bremerton Movable Yard Here on L American Story. We Returned to L American Stories up Next Going to Hear from Richard Herzog Offer His Childhood. Richard Always Longed for a Role Model to Look up to Help Them Navigate the Hardships He Was Facing in the Home but Is Inspiration, Not Being a Person at All Sports News, Richard with the Store. I Grew up in a Small Section of Romulus and Historically.
It's Not Much Different from New Orleans Per Se Is the Culture We Had One Room with a Large Number of People Living on Top of Each Other in One Bed You Really up in the Beginning You Have One That's Maybe Three or Four Boys Were Sleeping in a Warm Bed and Eventually Got Some Bumpy Road, so You Want Top or Bottom Maybe Two or Three Planning a Big Nemesis to Reliant on the Couch in the Living Room. You Are Always on the Go to Because You Know You Will Buy the Rule You Just Stay outside until It's Time to Eat. You Know Your Is Involved in an Games That You Make up Your Own Little World of Climbing on Trains Jumping Trains to Get to the Ballpark Is Removing Me Come on, You Go to Trial, That Once Right Swimming in the River. You Could Just Get up on the Barges Jump into the River so That Was Fun Views, like Growing up like Tom Sawyer and We Didn't Lack for Anything Because We Didn't Know What It Was like to Have Anything Where I Can Describe. Growing up Where I Grew up All You Needed Was a Pair Shorts Underwear New Good to Go Now.
You Have Sort Well You Know New Orleans, so You Either Going to a Celebration Where You Go Make One up Is Never Worry, You Just Go on the Next Day or the Next Thing the Next Event.
New Orleans Is Not a Part of This World As Far As I'm Concerned, but for Me It Affected Me so You Know, It Affected the People. The Drug Life of Sin People Died an Early Age Friend to Lost Overdoses and Fighting Came Early and Often and I Was Pretty Good so You Know It's a Hard Environment to Get Out Of Their Entrenched Footage. It Has the, Spell on You so Home It's It's an Abusive Situation Do Not Have My Share of Abuse I'd Seen My More Than My Fair Share of Abuse My Mother Suffered Severely with the Brush and Strawberry Six Children in a Small House. My Dad Was a Blue-Collar Worker and Their Marriage Was One Big Ball of Conflict I Would Scratch My Head Every Day Thinking How Did They Get Married so I Watched A Lot Of Wars. You Know the New Doctor in This Small Space. You Got to Witness Alcohol but You Were Also Living under These Guidelines Are This Paper by Color Orders. This Is What You Do. This Is How You Do It You Don't Ask Questions, Get Moving. So Your Curiosity Was Shocked to Life's and Motion All These Things That Are Happening inside the Home Gets Often Somewhat by Sports.
It Was the One Thing I Was Really Good That I Could Enjoy a Didn't Know Was Always Lands Away from House Plan Ball You Can Get on the Ball, Feeling Fresh Grass and Sweaty Uniforms Basically Knocking This Not out Each Other.
If You're in Football and Enjoying It Not Get Arrested for Throne and Attention.
Whatever It Was like Man I Could Do This. My Mother's Cousin Was Mellott and I Knew Had Some Athletic Influences in Me. You Know Would Watch Some Things on TV but See Athletes Play Not Going to Replicate and I Keep Working out until I Got Pretty Good and Loved It Just Absolutely Love the Love Computing and No Determine to Be in the Best on the Field All the Time. I Played Ball at School so You Know Growing up Has Success at Sports Have Allowed Trophies Trophies Were Put on the Mantelpiece and I in a Very Interesting Environment and I Had a Shotgun and a Record Player in a Crucifix around It.so Heavy-Handed Home Was Coming down on a Pretty Good at Bronze Scared Everything I Just Witness and around Trying to Get Back into the Football Game Because That's Where the Comfort Was Never Got to Have a Relationship with Someone, Soften the Blows or Maybe Give Me Some Sage Advice or Disappoint Me along the Way.
So I Think from the Part of My Childhood Going in Right before Get High School I Was Wanting Something, Say That You Know Richard You Are Decent Human Being Are You You're This You Are That and Come to Build up My Self-Esteem a Little Bit Instead of Always Being Held under Phone and Just Generally Just to Feel like Being Loved so I Was a Pretty Pretty Confused Child. I Have A Lot Of Talent from My Shoulders on down at That Point, but I Did Not Have a Whole Lot of Confidence between My Ears.
Richard Went to an All Place Catholic School One Day a Boy in His Class Decided to Play a Prank on the Teacher When He Invited Richard to Take Part in It. He Declined so Eventually the Guys Caught and I Wanted to Check to See How the Teacher Was.
I Was Being Sincere or Purposely Missed the Ball Stayed after School and Went to Visit Her in Her Classroom. She Was There Grading Papers and Knocked on the Door and We Start a Conversation and That's Were Really the Relationship Began It out. She Was Heavily Influential on Me Because She Was a Mother Figure to a Degree. She Was My Teacher. She Was the First Homecoming Queen at Universe in the World. She Was Absolutely Gorgeous out She Had It All and the Way She Interacted with Me. The Conversations We Had Felt like for the First Tom. I Was Learning and Actually Talking to Someone Gave Me the Time and Attention and Felt Sincere about the Mind Goes to These Places Because You're Hoping and Thinking and Wishing That the Slaves Going to Set You Straight and Help You out after Richard Talked with He Offered to Give Him a Ride Home from School.
We Walked to the Parking Lot and There Is a Burnt Orange 1972 Montego and I Thought for Gosh, Teachers Must Be Paid A Lot Of Money and I Got in the Dosage of This Brand-New Smell. The Ride Home Was Unlike Anything I've Experienced in My Life Was Call. It Was Musical. It Was Fun and Funny. It Was with Being Sure It Was Laughter and It Stuck with Me but the Drive Home.
Later That Day Was the First and Then Just Asked Me If I Need a Ride Home.
On the Bus and Started Running with Her and Relisting to Richard Herzog, Author of Peter Share His Story with Us. Growing up in New Orleans, Small House, One Bedroom Bunk Beds Always on the Go As He Said We Stayed outside until It Was Time to Eat.
Kind of like Growing up like Tom Sawyer. He Described Not so Much for the Home Life Celebrations of New Orleans Well Lots of Drugs Lots of Alcohol. Lots of Abuse in the Family. My Parents Marriage Was One Big Ball of Conflict. I Was Lands Away. However, When I Played Sports and Then the Teacher of His Riches Taught about a Different World in a Car Ride Home in Peace Some Laughter and Some Encouragement and Love. When We Come Back More Richard Herzog Story Dear L American Store Stories and with Richard Herzog. We Last Left off the Gun to Form What He Thought Was an Innocent Relationship with His Teacher Open She Would Be a Mentor for Its Return to Richard Last Day of School and She Drove Me Home and Will a Thought Been Good but Got All This Tightness in the like. I'm a Loser I'm Not Get to Talk to Her Anymore Is Romanticizing but I Got Accept the Reality of It No Matter What I'm Thinking I Have To Accept the Reality She's Married and Myself to Go on Summer Richard Had a Job Working at a Local Family Owned Restaurant Called Purdue. I Think That Helped Me Move on Little Bit You Get the Things You Love You Got You Got Sports You've Got Your Job and so Learn How to Keep Busy in That Moment and Where Work One Night and Miss Perdue Answered the Phone and Understand Are Nearby and She Says Richard You Have a Telephone Call Them to Get Booze: Me at Work and It Was Her Set up and Thinking in a like Talking to You and like Being with You and I Want to See You Again.
Let's Get Together and Away We Went. It Was Then That Richard's Teacher Told Him If He Gave up His Sports Which Practiced Every Saturday I Can Instead Spend Time Together by Then I Was Heavily Influenced. Now She Is My Drug of Choice. Basically, so When a Whatever She Said. I Listen to and It Was like Yeah Okay. She Wants to See Me, to Give up Sports. To Do This so You by Then Pretty Much Foregone.
I Didn't Tell Anyone until It Started to Get Physical, but No One Knew What to Do about after Several Months of Spending Time Together in Forming This Inappropriate Relationship. Richard's Teacher Asked Him If He Would Come for a Ride with Her. She Was Quieter Than She Normally Was an Then Just Basically Just Tells Me We Can Go on like This Anymore Can't Do This Anymore.
I Think by This Moment in Time People Are Talking and There's Still No Answers As to Exactly What Happened Other Than That, She Said She Got Scared and Ran so That's What Was Left Basically Mean It Was like Right Then and There.
So There Was so Much to Deal with Could Tell My Parents Are Going to London That the Administration Certainly Going to Go to the Priest and That Was the Hard Part.
There's Just No Help in Shutting the Door Had Nowhere to Go. Had No One to Talk to.
I Didn't Think Anybody Would Believe Me and so I Would See Her on a Daily Basis and, Zombie, I'm in a Total Inexplicable Fog and so That's Home Living Every Day. Two Years of High School Going through. That Was Excruciating Sideways, but I Was Also Determined That I Was Going Get through. When the Q but the Time I Got a High School Do Not Had Jobs That Were Just Crazy. There Were Going Nowhere Fast I Could Accept Things As They Were Now Live Where I Was Living, Drink Beer, Get up and Do It Again and Think Life Was Good. It Could've Settled for That but I Got to Thinking That You Know What of Wasted All My Talent That This Is Not What I'm Supposed to Be.
I Just Was Not Fulfilling My Potential Date. I Think God Had Given Me at This Point Richard Started Going to Football Games at the High School He'd Attended to Watch His Friend John Who Was the Quarterback I Would Sit in the Stands and I Would Be Filled with so Much Anger and Resentment and Not Towards John of the Team or Anything. I Was Pulling for Them, but the Resentment of That Could've Been Me, so I Would Walk Out Of the Stadium during These Games Being by the Meanest Mantis Person, Thereby Also Celebrate and I'm like You Know Just Get Away from Me As I'm Ready to Fight.
So That Was Me Standing in the Far. I Went in a Face That and I Knew It Would Be Hard but That Drove Me I Gotta Do Something. If I Can't Be a Ballplayer Than on the Coach and I Decided to Turn the Page Then and There. Richard's Friend John Was Being Recruited by Ole Miss to Play Football.
He Told Richard He Should Gather to for College. I Never Heard Ole Miss except for Archie Manning but He Knew Ole Miss Was the New Archie Manning Was What Does John's Good Recruited Him Living Right Next Door to Them. So All These Recruiters a Commander's House in Which Saad Said He Wants Us out with Ole Miss Archie Shows up at the House and of Course I'm over There and Beaten Archie Manning and Steve Sloan and Saw That the Thinking Him Ever like to Go up There Came up before Actually Not Enrolled in School and Saw No Slight. I like This Place, and Getting 78 Hours Away Was Kind of Cure for Me. You Know Could Separate Myself at That Point and We Were Something about It to Grab My Soul but I Also Know That I'm Here to Focus and I Want to Get My Degree. I Want to Coach Got on That Track of That's What's Happening and Demigod Must Been Looking at Me Something Because I End up Running the Athletic Dorm Here I Was in Charge of 400 Athletes and You Know That I'm Get to Travel with the Team and I Met Some of the Practices and Slight Wall.
But You Know and All This, the Darkness Is Still There.
The Problem the Issue Is Still There by the Law and by Definition, You Know There Was Statutory Rape Which Had No Idea What That Was. At the Time Because I Did Not Know the Difference between Improper and Improper Relationship in My Mind Is like Well to This Is Our Relationships Are Where the American and on That You Can't Really Commit to Something.
And That's What I Learned at an Early Age, so I Was in Therapy and Knowing Something Was Wrong. It Was Just like a Miracle and Lady Said to Send You to This Counselor Who Can Give You This Test and I Think She Can Help You. So Take the Tests and Escort High and It's Not a Good Thing but It Does Give You Answers, and the Answers for Me Were to Get into the 12 Step Program and I Felt like It Was the First Time I Have Been in Church in a Long Long Time.
With the Tremendous so Much Empathy and You Know Spiritual Togetherness That Your Old Rowing in the Same Boat Going in the Same Direction and Usually Want to Get Well.
I Quit Drinking Started Lifting Weights Started Running Doing All These Things Getting Healthier.
After Going through 12 Steps in Working with Ole Miss Athletic. Richard Then Went on to Become Head Football Coach at Another School in Tennessee and Led the Team to Four State Championship so One Accomplishment Is Billing on Top of the Other Which That in Itself Was This Therapy. If There Is Such a Thing for Me and Then As You Accomplished Something I Gain More Confidence and That's When I Started to Think Okay I Got Some Confidence Here. It's Time for Me to Be More Proactive Than a Band, and I Thought That Forgiving Was Important Because It All Boils down to. She Was an Adult and What She Did Was Abuse and Cause a Lifetime of Grief and I Wanted to Forgive Her. I Want to Forgive Myself for Giving Her Was Extremely Difficult Because You're Always Caught between Forgiving and Forgetting.
Then the Ugly Part of Me Would Know the Kind Would Rise Again and I Cannot Really Forgive Her Know You Said You Did Can You Really Do This and That Was Always Very Difficult but I Felt like I Could Confront All of It and Have Some Clarity and and I Was like This Gotta Be a Voice for People Who Have Had the Experience I Had This Happens to Males to Believe It or Not, and I Want Them to Know That If They Have This Sinner Going through What I Went through, They'll Have To Take Their Life They Can Win and You Know I Think the Best Thing That You Can Do Is Forgive so in the End of the Terrific Job in Medicine There On the Production of a Special Thanks to Richard Herzog, Author of Peter and How He Overcame the Sexual Abuse and Let's Face It.
That Was Sexual Abuse in Men Face or Two from Women and for Men This Is Important, Telling Those Insuring Those Stories Is When Women Do. My Goodness, Getting to Ole Miss and We Broadcast Right Here in Oxford, Mississippi 37 and Eight Hours Away from What Happened to Him.
But in the End Still Had to Face the Darkness the Way to Do It Was Forgiveness.
We Found That Again and Again That When the Victim Gives the Victimizer Life Story of Richard Herzog the Terrific Overcoming Story Here on Our American Story
