This is the Truth Network where you hear from ordinary people instilled with an extraordinary fashion. Together, we explore the stories of men and women who love God turn their passion into kingdom pursuits now up for the day on kingdom pursuits. I'm really excited about it. I hope it will be soon.

We have one special guest with us today is name is David Dusek my same error I David. David is an author of rough cut man, but he also has a ministry called rough-cut men and I couldn't tell you how much I love what it says in his website it says it is mission is to encourage and equip man to lock shields with other men in the battles of life. Welcome David. I have taught that principle before from the Greek failing's idea that later became a Roman idea. I'm tart that the Greek mothers would tell their sons that you either come home with your shield or on it.

There shield was such an important part of their armor because it was the one piece armor that they defended their brother with we just celebrated our 10th anniversary speaking ministry in February till February 09 was the first time ever present the content in a live setting in Dothan, Alabama, United Methodist Church, and it just kinda grew legs and became what it is now, which sometimes is hard to control. Only one of me, but God has opened doors that are clearly only God can open with our relationship, US Army chaplain Corps worldwide and with essentially every denomination you can think of and have a laser focused mission and that is to connect men together below the inch deep and a mile wide that you'll find most most guys connected in the church you know it all for the great nametags but at the end of the day were all facing struggles financially, relationally, merrily, it's just it's incredible what you hear when when the guard comes down and guys go toward for each other so you can see that we are loaded for bear today on kingdom pursuits, but you know when I heard the name of David's ministry.

I couldn't help but think, but speaking of cut deep cuts were made in the guillotine in history had heard about this Pedro say something.

They take beautiful pictures and cut them into pieces human out of her this but when Stevie wonder cuts his lawn. It's a mind blowing case of line mowing. That's really black.

That's really bad right you might like this one. Even worse, the environmental committee held a meeting on Saturday. They decided we need to cut down on all this deforestation can happen.

And of course my new weed Wacker is cutting really. I thought about this.

It's got cutting heads technology yeah yeah those are anything at the end of all the shenanigans I would actually have a riddle for you today on kingdom pursuits and this one you may think is in bad taste, but it's a men show, so I figured, you know, I might just go there so here you go, the men of Shechem would certainly tell you that the first cut is the deepest one.

Why why is that 866-34-TRUTH 87884 866-34-TRUTH and if they can tell me why the first cut is the deepest of the men Shechem chief tell him what the wind is a magazine analyst and Christian farmers out there you go, you can win in this armband is really cool by the way in their magazine for Christian farmers outreaches got way more in it than you might imagine, all you have to do to win his call in and asked this answer this riddle, which I know little tricky, but you know if you been studying your Bible you may know what happened to the minute, Shechem, and you would say they would tell you that the first cut is the deepest why is at 866-348-7884. So David, I am interested in are clearly the story always has a beginning like you are out there and all the sudden you know, apparently God rough-cut you first yell to weird characters. What started out as I order the marketplace and go very well in real estate in Florida, which was work or live in. I just kept feeling that call to do something with man because I have lived a life of 32 years pre-salvation and human value as a believer of having another guy. Don't drag me off the field on LifeLock my leg drop, so to speak, so I tried. I joined a group called man in the mirror out of Orlando. If the book was written by Pat Morley back in 1986 and ultimately became a training ministry organization.

I was training men in Florida on on the elements of building a sustainable ministry demanded there was one piece was still yell the best system in the world is only as good as a system in and it was up there was a moving part that felt it was missing, relationally, because you can have the greatest ministry in the world of men don't drive into deeper relationship with each other than you really burning pancakes on a Saturday morning and I also have a diehard passion for movies which will kind of segue into the name of the ministry will have his passion for movies and I got asked to speak at a church in Dothan, Alabama back in 2009 for the entire weekend and now I was doing for our training at that point in the course of renewing the ministry as a vocation spell for about 15 years full-time.

I and so it's almost an honorarium I should of course be all be happy to do it for weekend and I had a 7 Hour Dr. from Panama City back to my house to realize that I had no idea what I would talk about for the entire weekend and when I got home my wife, who is the spiritual giant and all I said I don't want to talk about but go shooting with a check so I gotta figure out what to do because we really need this to continue to drive forward administration want you to stay colors, movie clips you've written down and make something out of them.

Clear all relevant to men. What was parenting her relationships are broken relationships, altering treatment suffer from. So I literally chuck these clips well little buddies out back then I had to go to Blockbuster, rent the DVDs with out the pieces that we needed in and sanitize them of any bad language and forcefully out of the spread of the TV producer so we burn them all onto a DVD. Off I went to Dothan, Alabama to present the first ever rough-cut man without a name and when I got home I still really resonated and I molecularly need a name for this thing.

So she said I'm good to go movie terminology and the first thing that popped up was the term rough-cut which is the first law unedited version of the movie before any sound effects are fully work I has been done and you get a glimpse of what the finished product will look like you don't actually see it until it's gone through the final production phases.

So the rough-cut is just a rough idea of what the movie will ultimately look like and she said no that's just like what the Bible says in Philippians 160 were confident you will carry on the completion of the work is begun in as you know you men are working progress manner rough-cut so that's what we should call it and go it cuts out the ministry name was birthed. That's morning and will you may not. You may know that we also host a master journey, radio, or we use movie clips every week on the radio show we use the audio from uncle and we do boot camps John Eldridge style where we also use minutes not been doing this for a number years, so we are put together by mutual friend Paul Shelton and it is just so clear that that Jesus spoke in parables, and those things awaken the heart so we can get a chance to talk to Dave. I'm really excited about talk about that key in High Point has an answer for us and fell down through the break of what why these messages would say. The first is so we got home. Am I excited about the rest of the show today on King of receipts day to summer passion and uses it to build the kingdom and I do have a little bit of a teaser for you and alt and in David is with us today and he works with teen challenge actually tomorrow morning I leave with teen challenge on a mission trip to Jamaica where were going, but with some folks over there and actually do boot camp had a movie clip experience over there for them in Jamaica.

I meant to be there for the weekend. So next Saturday and alt are you know used to be on adventures and odysseys you know that voice.

It's a wonderful bit encryption card I theater she is going to be hosting Pat Boone the Pat Boone I understand you been drinking milk the whole deal during the show next week so we might not want to miss next week show with Pat Boone but right now we've got Keith is in High Point. I know everybody that's dying to know about the first cupbearer did it keep your kingdom pursuits. Good morning good morning so yeah yeah that that yeah that was hard when it I mean what shenanigans that you know the boys of Jacob Colette on the nanosecond and you know it's just a it's one of those stories that just like oh my goodness it will go to work on right and I got whacked out a blank yeah why did they got it and then interestingly, Jacob. You know it's almost like Levi got dispersed in Israel when you look at Jacob's blessing. He was really he stayed mad about third it all out.

He just realized that that was part of the judgment of God that that that would be a different blessing for them and Judy would end up with the Neo scepter, so to speak, but that Levi would be dispersed through Israel if dipped it really change the whole story. While my hand really good at it like in God changes client law when man finds the best signature Keith, thank you for your wonderful Bible knowledge in your quick answer to my Reynolds. They got bless thank you for your Showboat quote. I appreciate got bless you to you to Keith about Tobias so I have to ask you David was we were talking before the break.

He loves to take movie clips and use them to illustrate stories, Jesus used parables, and so I can't help but wonder David, what's your favorite along with probably my favorite movie of all time if it will sit down to watch it again even though I own it is we were soldiers. Now back started out because very good friends with all of the men that were there in November 1965 my oncoming book is actually based on that battle. My upcoming book, which you done this afternoon or my agent good at My 12 principles to Biblical manhood learned in the eye at Green Valley Vietnam and Iraq privilege of interviewing. Basically everybody I go to the reunion every year with the guys from the first set of tabs and lose a lot of them displayed general more rest in February 2017 table finally got started. Later we lost back in October 2012 at night are getting older, but it's always a thrill to be with them because I would rather be with them in with the actors that betrayed him say you you met the actual Sgt. major and and I'm good friends with family and I I've sat more than once were Joe Galloway, VPI reporter who wrote the book didn't and yellow. I I've hung out with Ernie Savage, the guy who handled the cut off soon on our downrange and couldn't get back I got surrounded an Alabama fan, so we never talk about football because of the gator yeah I do every year we go to the reunion. We get to hang out with them so you know, as I think about it that way. That movie to trade that Sgt. major like man if I was to be trained in the military I would want that guided me oddly what major probably is a cultural phenomenon in the Army and there is so much but I did miss portray one significant part of him, which is never sure he was devoted to his wife, for I believe 74 years they were married 99 on January 1 this year and an eight years electric I mean this guy is one of only 273 soldiers in the history of the Army to have been awarded three combat infantryman badges, which are only given for wars not not battles but actual war so the legend and was one of the things that really I ask a very specific question to one of his kids his daughter as to what would you like to grow up in the home yellow under the mantle of leadership of the Command Sergeant Major Beto Plumley and the answer shocked me.

She said it was still we did not know who my dad was until the movie came out in 2002 I would come only to the Army change uniforms to me was just daddy. I use that in the live presentation. Our kids just don't feel I don't care what we do for work in just one thing he did a phenomenal job of just being a dad and a grandfather and even his own family didn't know how legendary he was until Wendell Wallace came out we were soldiers in 2002. That's what I need need need experience, and so what we talked about a lot of the masculine journey radio which showed which actually comes on right after kingdom pursuits is the band of brothers that we have a relationship like what you're talking about what we want to get out of for a number of years and end in I think anybody who actually sat in on one of those meetings will be shocked that is not a Bible study it's it's people talk about real struggles and talk about real war with the real enemy and and and and some of those things and so how cool is it that you're out there teaching that and and actually amongst that kind of band of Brothers that's been in that kind of battle together. I disguised just so phenomenal. I just wonder when those guys get together like that. Those guys whether they talk about those guys already have a culture statement that I always lead we met you very soon. Right at the outset of any church-based event that we do and it's all about the fire chain and your fire team is a four-man team typically in the desert warfare scenario will be happy over the global war on terror dealing with now. This is for men to jump into a hobby every day and go outside the wire on enemy ground near the Bible does say that we have an enemy that wants to steal, kill and destroy them. John Chapman Peter said you crawled around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour it for think tactically. A lot of us in the church are forgotten very real enemy that's decided drive very tactically that if you take a man out you correct your family or marriage the children. The legacy comes after this one shot multiple kill the enemy of our souls. Each is no idiot. And I think we forget that a lot. So what you think the crosses over from a lot of the work I do with the military is that brotherhood formed inside that Humvee when you're outside the wire. You cannot communicate with brigade or division. No class a uniforms everybody covered in dirt, you got a guy driving the leaders usually riding shotgun. He got a guy on communications in the back and that you are the fourth guy got his head through the roof, put his head on a swivel I would a chance mount up on a 50 Cal to make sure that enemy doesn't take you out before you take him out and honestly everyday as men of God.

We need to be connected to a fire team. Yes, we have to be part of a division that would be our Sunday morning when were in our class a uniforms. Everything is perfect in our kids are in between us and then we got smiles on our faces, but instead is that inside the Humvee moment when when the fire team really ends up under fire. The only thing at that point the matter to surviving that attack and living to fight another day in our live all four guys will make it back inside the wire to the forward operating base every day when there winter downrange so they cut already organically have that brotherhood. Interestingly enough, a lot of what were seeing in the military now revolves around the fact that there's not a lot of ability to recognize nonverbal signs of distress relationally.

You know you I grew up in a generation where was all Gail face-to-face communication and I apologize were necessary and encouraged when as often as possible in a High Court technological generation. They just don't have those conflict resolution skills. They don't have the ability to look at the Giants are you okay because they're used to looking down screen and I think that's what were seeing more often than not, in the context of a brigade, for example, is the younger generation which are now in five and a six-year-old saw Sgt. some staff circuits were leading these fire teams and squad. I don't have the disc inherently. Most of them don't have the ability to walk by a guy whose punch down in front of the Derek smoking a cigarette every day. Never engage with anybody to never bother to ask a are you all right and we need to be doing at the church as well. It's great to do a Craig Craig Rochelle study are doing a book called chilling kryptonite of my small group now, I don't lead I just go because I want to be a guy and until we spent time together.

We will trust each other. Trust is developed over time will have a relationship until we have that trust to the lampstand all about to spend time together whatever context letter shooting fishing, playing golf, small groups are the more intentional we are about it.

That is, man.

I am not excited about the next half hour. This is what I couldn't be more excited to hear more from David my new friend who I've never talked to before the baby so side of the pump and I am looking forward to it. Again, you may have a question or comment for David. Now that you hear some of the people he works with whatever I know that I would be shot, so feel free to call Lily 8663 for 87884 is a number to call him with David. I can't help but note that your name is David and as I listened to you speak it, you know, biblically speaking, you you be pretty hard-pressed to find a tougher warrior than David, yet to be pretty hard-pressed to find a more tender individual and and so when you and I'm I'm I'm very curious about your 12 principles you know where.

Where is there a principal in there like that.

I probably shut the book up to the battle history and bullets instead of in paragraph does. I'm a guy I read quicker winter and bullets augmentative.

I can set the stage for it and of course the big idea of the entire book is everything that that team did downrange. They also did hold order intentional, not just as leaders and and warriors, and in the fight. They were also the same kind of man. It holds you the vast majority of you guys are believers, so they went into combat know as as knowing that God was her sword noted that that they were carrying with them your mantle of leadership that have been divinely ordained, not just ordained by Washington DC so one of the most important principles of the new book is really about maintaining your headquarters tent one think that they do it all in a situation like they did when they were landings on x-ray. By November 65 is a you got but you got to protect your headquarters, like protecting your flag meal.

Boardgame strategical. If you lose your flag, which is your flag it always at the headquarters tent for your communications medical everything your leadership all the battle plans are corralled into this one area in the middle of of the battlefield and in life like a gentleman often spent together in ministry for ministry in almost a good dinner ministry to other people won't be any good. I because the number one ministry God gave us the ministry throughout all my wife or kids or grandkids. I mean, that's that's our primary area of operations as men of God and these guys were very clear about defending that that that headquarters tent in the field.

We should be as well because that involves how we communicate with our wife, how we, the words that we choose to speak you. The Bible says in Proverbs 1821 of the tongue is the power to bring life and bring that I can walk into my house at any moment coming back from a trip and in three words or less. I can either build my wife off her rocker Joy the same diet just a matter what I decide to verbally fire downrange, so to speak, and so those are the kind of principles, but even a rough cut men movie experience event which dates back 10 years now and I'm very cognizant and very deliberate about is the tenderness part. You know you can fight the enemy all day long, but what the enemy is not your help. Your life is not your enemy, and a lot of I think the responses that we have as men come from deep-seated wounds that we have it don't even involve them. We were spot I've I found myself responding to my now 83-year-old father more often than not when my wife talked to me because of the shortcomings. I feel that I have the disappointments that I that I laid out in front of him and every response I got from him. I was the really operated in the inverse and didn't really build me up at night by myself responding a lot of time to do simple request for my wife as if she sang a look in all your great husband, but you still have an organizer garage yet so you're a lousy husband.

That's how we respond as men and such really want to anchor focuses in the book is obviously broken into different chapters. You have to be aware of your your capabilities. You need to know what what you have on your team. You need to know what what your resources are all those things are just as important as men of God as they are in a in a situation were those guys were ambushed mean they were outnumbered five to one, they landed about 2000 men division only 395 would sound a lot like my morning going to get us a lot of stuff that translates really well battlefield to the battlefield of life. One of the neat things it actually one of my best friends. That is by far and away his favorite black and he's actually discouraged about the movie so I may have him listed as podcast disease can go crazy when he finds out, I'll rob you got to talk to these people and I did concede coming he he lives, eats and sleeps in breezes and he was one of the founders of the ministries that that I'm involved in. And so one of the first things that he incorporated in our ministry was the ability to call in a broken arrow and so that when you are totally overrun by the enemy and in that happens in life on all sorts of occasions and I can remember a number broken arrows. I've called in on myself were in a list of like oh I can't deal with this and to have a band of brothers that are in a position to do that but from speak to your perspective on what happened when they called it in because I'm not a military person so I don't grasp out like I believe you wanted that particular broken arrow arrow is simply a technical term for a we are outgunned and outmanned that if you do not deploy every available resource within radio distance of us.

We are going to die. That's basically what what what what just like I call the general bullet that that he was a Lieut. Col. at the time. What then Lieut. Col. Moore did what he should look where they're about ready to take her headquarters tent, as I alluded to earlier, this is our last last stronghold were about ready to lose it again outnumbered 5 to 1. Admit that they were victorious in that particular battle. Now, if you read the book there's another battle that you wouldn't want to make a movie out of the resulted in the death of nearly an entire battalion but the victory that x-ray versus being lost at landings on Albany which is the second half of the book we were soldiers once in young Billy reason that they were victorious that they would because they they called in. They had planes stacked every thousand feet from 5000 feet to about 30,000 feet to put everything they could interrupt the battlefield. It was no bigger than two football fields, so that was that was what wasn't in my personal life back in by Memorial Day weekend last year my wife was diagnosed with cancer. Out of nowhere and I had to preach that following weekend and the first thing I did was you I can't. I can talk a lot financially. Relationally I've had prodigal kids.

I've been a prodigal kid were blended families will have somehow managed to survive raising two of my own, and three of of her but Alan was a gut punch and and so that's exactly what I did was I I figuratively speaking. I reached out to my my battle buddies I should look I got nothing, so this is one of those moments where you say what spray is all on you. I got a focus on her and now was probably the worst broken arrow moment I have ever had to go through yeah I my youngest. I can remember to three that did that. I do still have any clue how to express the value of having that group that when something just really really really tragic like that happens that you have got people to share that with that. You know you've taken the mask off with they know the real Robbie Delmore.

They know the real Dick David to know the method wanted you know that that bit and so when those people love you when the in spite of that they really know you and investors to a different level of trust and and it's a different level of of of those kind of thing so absolutely I am so excited about where were headed. We just talked about one of his favorite got more so knows where this goes, we would still love to hear from you. If you have a question form. I mean, I'm sure you do is call 866-34-TRUTH 878 847. A few more minutes left in the show, so it's probably the kingdom today were so blessed really really blessed to have David Dusek with his. He is the author of root rough-cut men, his ministry, rough-cut men and so one of the things you that way as I'd mentioned, I'm on my way to Jamaica in the morning and I'm in a be using movie clips and one of the things that I think that is been stolen from our culture to an extent, is what is Jesus really look like. I mean, I don't know that I growing up in church, had any picture of Jesus as a warrior, David, and so in one of the things that John Eldridge is shows and teaches that in talks about that you know if we could get a good look at Jesus, we would have a better idea of the kind of man that God has that you have in mind that we were no destined to grow into his is there a movie clip that speaks to that for you. I know that that most of the clips I use so different melodies that men face so a lot of times I'm doing with the relational wounding in an relationships marriage money all at stuff we deal with diet, the identity of the identity of Jesus as I truly believe it will looking at Jesus for looking at got me nuts just the way that all plays out and I I believe that there's a chart I laughed when I read some of the stuff that Jesus says to his disciples to me. There are times when if you don't think that he was just a kid sarcastic occasionally use you commit some of the funniest thing he ever did to his disciples feel and they did a fair speech out to completely set them up at one point when he was asking about the baptism of John positive daughter was a man and so we don't know because they were totally drafted to a corner because they they had no right answer is you want to tell you either and I just love that about about Jesus because it gives me some give me some relief because I have the possibly a little bit of a vein of sarcasm really old man still is still in there. You know that yes my name is David but the old guy's name was Dave that I tell people all the time and David dead when I was when I and that was at the end of myself. I lost a marriage and by kids in my house everything else and that's why minimize the top of the Sunshine Skyway bridge over Tampa Bay.

When I cried out of the deal if you exist this bit excellent time to show up I think is compassion for me whether he still look whether he's a prophet or I are not. I do not know.

All I know is I was blind and now I can see in us the Jesus that I stay focused on the most threaded throughout everything that that I do is ministry, whether it's who has your six which is our military side or rough-cut men, which is the church so I whether Dr. or life form you see him in everything you'll see him and in a clip from the movie Rudy about about.

He's the perfect father so we weekend. Rudy detonated not necessarily in we see who God is through who who he's not going to look at man that's a really really good point and I'm curious when you had that moment there on the bridge were you in the military at the time felt you I will tell you right now that I quite like it.I look like it.given the ducks know that I'm not a doctor but I've never been a dark now I am I am not prior service. My dad was a lieutenant in the Navy underwater demolition strongman so I grew up there in an interesting household. His father left him. He was 12 for it was a huge handicap of my dad. You know we got a great relationship now after 20 years of a given particle but no, I why was not I am not prior service.

I don't think there's a guy it wouldn't take me anywhere anytime under fire because we have a trust there that I've spoken everybody for the hundred and first airborne of third seven special forces and first Airborne Division.

I've been everywhere and I don't know eventually asked like you did. I let them know but God has put me in a place where I just know an awful lot about the brotherhood that I spent an awful lot of time with and when I was on the top of that bridge. I have lost I lost everything because I was a selfish jerk and unfortunately 10 years ago may my former wife's mother might you kids passed away of cancer. She was only 40 at the time so we control a lot as good as a unit. Called to ministry to loss of mom to my son being a good 12 years of prodigal himself and God restoring on the last five years I managed to get my father and my son back so it's been a banner decade for God's restoration and how is your wife. She is great man.

Thank you for asking. We went through.

It was the hardest recovery week and 1/2 of my life in our hospital about 5 feet of the street from our house and she insisted I would go all and sleep in our bed every night so I would come home and sit on the couch and TV and then wonder why they're managing your wife to the hospital in your home alone forever really really gave me a new vision of American small as you for this one intensely connection and I'm hoping we can again sometime soon. God bless you, thank you so much for doing this today given the all the great so you in human organ.

Right now I okay all right will thank you David God bless you and we got so much more truth, and purging prayer followed by an attorney much more to
