Genesis chapter 9 this is an interesting chapter you're familiar with this. Most of you, Jacob, who has as we got to say got a lot of playing time in the Old Testament a lot about his life, good and bad. By the way there's a lot of good and bad about our life and you know usually we can put on a pretty good show for folks at church but of people knew all the ins and outs of our life. It might be a bit embarrassing.

And yet God's chosen certain individuals to tell us the good the bad and the ugly. If you will to show that God's grace is sufficient, and his mercy is everlasting and him but as Jake got a lot of playing time.

We know that Jacob had his sons and we know really the most about Joseph who is a picture of Christ and the word of God and I Joseph younger brother Benjamin but then of course he had his older brothers that we don't know quite as well some of them we do and there were obviously these Jacob sons became kind of what we know as the 12 tribes of Israel different things. You know all that. But in chapter 49 Jacob is on his deathbed, and Jacob calls his sons in the begins to talk about their lives a little bit. I guess you would say kinda gives his last words of advice, but he kinda gives his last blessing his last warning and there are things that are interesting that Jacob shares there are some things in this chapter that he shares with some of his sons that they had no idea that their dad even knew about.

It's a reminder that you and I will one day answer for the things we've done in our life. God sees everything I know about you.

I'm glad I am forgiven and covered by the blood of Christ.

Thank God for that. But if you'll notice in verse 22. He begins on Joseph and Joseph. Obviously we know wasn't treated that well by his other brothers and as he makes his way down from the oldest to the last in verse 22. Jacob says this Joseph is a fruitful bow or bow. Some people call its bow.

This means a young tree that is bearing fruit, even a fruitful bow by a well whose branches run over the wall.

The archers have sorely grieved him and shot at him hated him, but his bow abode and strength. The arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob. That's really good in that he gives this phrase from fence is the shepherd.

The stone of Israel. Lord I love you and Lord as we discussed today the subject of learning to be triumphant when we feel that we are the target Lord you given great example in the life of Joseph.

Lord I can't wait to see you face-to-face one day and I have always enjoyed the thought of getting to meet Joseph.

Many of our Bible heroes that you have chosen to use in your inspired word and Lord through everything this young man went through you wanted him because he honored you prayed that we would look at this closely how we can apply this to our lives. In Jesus name we pray. Amen we can just kinda block out the verse before and after listing verse 23, just for a minute. Verse 23 is not a very positive uplifting verse. The archers have sorely grieved him and shot at him and hated him's not a very uplifting verse, but may I say that this sometimes can describe seasons of our life.

Let me put it this way. We all have arrows coming at us. I don't know if you heard that we all have arrows coming at us. We all get shot sometimes Joseph had some rough experiences in life. I want to look at a couple things real quick first, I want you to see is the word of God puts it first want you to see Joseph's archers verse 23 is amazing. The word that God uses here the archers have sorely grieved him. Now I cannot find a time in Joseph's life, at least biblically, where we see that Joseph was in a position where he was in a battle and he took on arrows from an enemy. This is not what God's talking about here now.

Joseph faced many battles in his life, but God is not necessarily speaking here of physical arrows that were coming at him like in a battle or in a war. Although there were some things like that that Joseph faced, we don't find reference to that, anywhere, literally, in the book of Genesis that would lead us to believe that this is what God is speaking of through Jacob. God is literally describing in Joseph's life. Spiritual warfare and God here says that the individuals that came in. Joseph or so skill that he called the archers using our people to just shoot a bow and arrow which would be me.

I thought about bringing a bow and arrow and an thank you baby I appreciate always wonderful to have encouraging wife that I am good with a bow. I think I don't you talk it's bow tie. Anyway, I am but I like him but I was like I'm not an expert.

I could not have been in services were eventually set up targets in the background above a person said get back here, they sit right there in that you know kind of thing I would I would do that.

It would be horrible to find out you can't do that right. The morning service like the August old, so sorry, ma'am, I'm sorry, that would not be good on the Sunday morning service, but I can shoot a bow, but there are archers and these people are trained to know exactly what they're doing and they can hit a bull's-eye just about every time and so God literally here is not describing that this is just everyday life and there are just things that came a Joseph God was saying that there were some very skilled people that came in. Joseph Joseph faced an onslaught above the average individual. He had archers shooting at him. He had a lot of enemies with interesting is you won't find in God's word. Hardly any reference were Joseph ever did anything wrong to somebody now he was in a perfect individual, but he had archers coming in second.

I want you to see Joseph's arrows verse 23, God describes the things that came a Joseph in his life and and it might be it might describe some things that have been coming at you or have come at you it seasons of your life. Notice verse 23 says the archers have sorely grieved him and shot at him two different things. They grieved him. They've shot at him notice this third thing they have aided him. So Joseph literally dealt with in life. The fact of people grieving him. The fact of people that were literally shooting at him trying to cause harm, and the fact that he had to deal with people that hated him no different.

Even if you have done anything because it's not fun to know there are people that you it's a hard thing to bear and Joseph took all this, let me discuss if I cannot, you can picture if you're the target in life and sometimes if you're like me, sometimes you gotta feel like you're the target almost like an in life, you're either narrow or your target and preacher. I feel like I'm the target of your life looks a little bit like that or feels a little bit like that target over there. You taken some hits along the way, let me if I can just describe a few of the arrows that Joseph took on in his life.

First, there were arrows from family arrows from family by the way these part B had a very dysfunctional we could call a relationship with his brothers.

His brothers were very spiteful towards Joseph. They mocked him, they stripped him. They threatened him they sold him they thought that he had literally died of a thought that they were rid of him were jealous of him and this is just his family. Imagine when you go into the real world. I mean, don't you think there's anywhere you want to feel protected from the harm it would be family model one believe that today, and yet some of you sitting here have taken some arrows from family Joseph dealt with. They sometimes feel like they go deeper than any other error because of the source sink thing I noticed is that Joseph took arrows from accusation.

Joseph had found his way to work in Potiphar's house who was obviously in leadership there in Egypt and and here he's working for part of her and Potiphar's wife, who was obviously as we can tell the future a very very attractive woman and Joseph is up doing some business.

Obviously therefore Potiphar orange and Potiphar's wife literally tries to seduce Joseph and and she wants to do that and I'm sure that Joseph first, he felt the personal temptation of that.

But second he he wanted to keep himself ride. The Bible says, he said no he got out of there. She grabbed him by the garment and he literally got out of the garment to get out of there because she was trying to snatch him after he had literally refused her and decided to do right and had shown character and moral purity. She accused him said that he had come at her. Potiphar believed him and he is up in jail. I cannot tell you something about arrows of false accusation, there's really not much you can do to protect yourself from that, there's really no way you can stop that.

The only thing you can do for that is to be right towards God to have a clear and clean conscience and leave it up to the Lord. I will tell you this, that is not always easy having arrows stony you of false accusation that I live.

I believe a very very undeserved blessed life that I get to do what I do and I get to do it where I get to do this is I think the greatest church in the world there sometimes a tomatoes I wanted and what everybody in Kernersville walked in with don't want to be a discharge meter people felt the way I felt we would have to build five buildings. I just think is the greatest place in the world now.

I should because I'm the pastor. I guess, but sometimes I think you know how can anybody visit here not stay here. How could they not want this. I'm blessed to get to be here and I really feel that way but you would you would be fully yourself if you thought that I've never been falsely accused of something I get it all, we hear Kirwan's gone liberal that I have people here that think goodness gracious preacher. Can we do a little something that I hear from the folder live alder this out there that will he's there doing this now offers a go inside to tell you some of what I find out were doing in the services, but on the one of the services and I don't see it, you know, I don't feel it, but all are you one believe all that I hear you know what it is they assist people… This I know, but it still arrows sometimes are misunderstood.

Sometimes you have nothing but good motives which you're going to get some arrows thrown at you and shot at U of false accusation, some you might figure you just have so much of it in your life.

At times it just got the best of you knew I does the third thing that Joseph got arrows from the failures of others, so anything well. There were two individuals that ended up but I know you know this, but I discover this brief. There's two individuals that ended up in Joseph's life.

Joseph ended up in jail for some he didn't do any meets I Baker Anna Butler and between this Baker in the Baller that both work for Pharaoh and Pharaoh was very moody and if you got out of my just boomed there in the dungeon. You know any ended up meeting both of these men and both of these men had dreams and Joseph was known to interpret dreams and so he can't help please guys out thinking. If I help them out and interpret their dream and God help me this maybe God could use this to get me out and he interprets the dreams for both of these guys and both of them forget Joseph. What's interesting is the Baker got out finally and then Pharaoh killed him. To make this get you better learn how to make biscuits give me know. This diet junk that's probably what happened. Probably the Baker made a free bread or something and Pharaoh was like skip quality back in her goodness gracious of surrogate loss talk about. Sorry.

So the mother got out and he forgot Joseph for two years.

I may not remember you mentioning you may think you make this up to you and they all forgotten.

While you sit in there for some he didn't do Joseph had not only people fail him that he had to sit in that jail remind that he was even there. Because of his family. He was still there because of his friends that Vanessa people fail you would like. By the way, guess what you might have a preacher failure. Once while it might be me about Tom sit down at the house and just kidding describe my week and I probably sit down, and also in so-and-so had summed on Tuesday, I forgot it written everything down I could possibly write down that I forget where I wrote it down and don't read it and just you fail people you know what, that's just part of life to take some arrows now say this, that fourthly quickly that Joseph took some arrows and followers. You see, Joseph ended up in a leadership position. He ended up literally the one in charge of food in Egypt and is God again honor him when you when God alters you and you end up in positions of leadership. Not everybody like that. It's not easy being the leader because everybody behind you is going to find something wrong with what you're doing so everywhere that Joseph went somebody was mad at him now. I know that doesn't sound encouraging, but it is encouraging to me that you know what sometimes you end up in situations it a matter either, so I can be upset arrows coming from family and you arrows come and revolve accusation you have arrows coming at you because people have failed to have arrows coming from the little like that you're in charge at all.

I wear position herein, and they wanted all the things that these things can happen in life, and Jacob. Literally this old patriarch of God is lying there looking at the second from last so much that he thought was dead and God brought back into his life and he looks at him and he says the art including some of these young men that were standing there with them his own brother.

The archers have shot at him. Dear friend, you and I sometimes were to be the part sometimes working to be with the others raining at it's just going to happen in life sometimes they will preacher this is a wonderfully encouraging message.

I feel so much better about life.

Not if you notice in this verse 23 he says grieved shot at and hated did you notice this in verse 23 Jacob looks at his son. He says that the archers have grieved shot at and hated the preacher what is that mean this implies mental, physical and emotional attacks. They grieved me mental. They shot at me physical. They hated me emotion. Joseph had literally taken on mental, physical and emotional attacks arrows coming at him from left and right. Jacob describes it going to be just a couple quick things.

For I let you go in just a minute about arrows is first, that arrows surprise arrows surprise you can hear an arrow coming arrows show up when you don't expect arrows seem to come out of nowhere there to see coming in. Jacob describes all that his son went through that literally he literally had to bear this from individuals that he never thought would do this to him. He never saw it coming with a girl brothers and try to kill you. Now that I have three sons. I could see the possibility I was an only child. I got all the food all present all the everything was or argue about life to.

I got three sons. Her final time was going on was going on. Life was going with what's wrong my 14-year-old is 14 today Dana mold as this is his birthday and you know I sure get your sons get older, you begin to think is a dad. As you pray for him every day. What kind arrows are to come with them.

I got a six-year-olds had a lot arrows at already. Arrows surprise to me. Some things happen you live you didn't see, you didn't expect this can happen. People sometimes circumstances whatever and you just just all of a sudden hitch something I say this arrows stick arrows go deep. That's what they're made to do their major piercing go deeper. They're made to do as much damage after they enter as when they enter.

Arrows are hard to get out. You know that oftentimes you can hurt yourself worse by get an arrow out as you did when the era when in as they stick got some you a church. I don't try to overdo this year but I'm since I'm you in church or sit here, you look like a regular person to me. But if the heart was seen. That's what you look like you got wounds everywhere is arrows stick things that if Avenue, 20, 30 years ago still in your mind. That's what arrows do is an amazing how wise Jacob was what he was saying. Notice the third thing can I say this arrows steam hurt things in life hurt false accusation hurts family doing your own hurts friends that fail you. It hurts leather. There's no way to get around to face some things in life that are going to hurt you. And may I say this lastly that arrows sever no I arrows hurt you because as they enter they begin to divide and separate origins. They separate blood vessels, a few shooting dear yeah he'll keep writing all day unless you pierce them in a certain area and it centers things and when you take on now. Sometimes it hurts and it stays and it begins to sever relationships that can sever friendships that could begin to listen to me separate your relationship with God. I've seen people take on some arrows. And guess what got separated them, and God. God didn't shoot the arrow. Arrows sever so number three so I preacher you made me feel really good to be attacked mentally physically and emotionally is arrows go deep arrows stick arrows sever okay. Thank you for the good news of the gospel.

Number three I want you to see Joseph's accomplishments. By the way, one day God will know all that you been through. Don't think that all the arrows you taken over the years that you are aware, Jacob laid there as his father and knew exactly what he had been through I may I tell you that your heavenly father you might not always see him and you may not always feel him but he's there and he no what you got. The first thing that Joseph's dad brings up this megamillion one verse 22.

If you would Joseph is a fruitful battle first thing Jacob brings up his Joseph's fruit despite the fact that he's been shot at his entire life because he didn't let it affect them to the point that he was mad and bitter and angry and quiet and all those things. Because of that God has brought fruit through his life. Can you imagine what a complement is after all you've been through that you can literally save my life and from every reason he had to not be fruitful have been thrown. Joseph only. We have people to quit for far less dear friend, the more you, the more arrows you take on the more you keep going for God it's going amaze you the fruit that God will bring some you been through so many difficult things but you know what you're still here running a bus route on a Wednesday night you're still working in a junior church you're still serving God, you're still teaching and I want to class you're still coaching it upwards, you're still involved you still show up visitation you're still trying to disciple people are still faithful in charge you're still tithing, you're still serving God. And guess what I was coming at us. God will bring fruit.

Jacob said Joseph he's a fruitful tree notice. The second thing he brings up Joseph's fate. He said he is fruitful because notice this verse, even a fruitful bow by a what Joseph won the tree that just grew in his own Joseph won the tree that just happened to bear fruit on his own despite the fact that the arrows came in him. Jacob said you're fruitful because you've always been attached to the well anybody else excited on a Sunday morning or is it just me dear friend I'm here to tell you, you get your foundation will take care of itself when you're by the well you're getting fed arrows can, you have to leave the well why would I leave the very place I need to be, but I get excited about.

Jacob said Joseph you've been fruitful because you've always have the right foundation to look at me, you get a tree does not get any nutrients in ink and a take much use expression to knock it down and get a take much to blow it over, but you get a tree that by the well where the roots go deep you could take on some arrows and keep stand. Notice the third thing he talks about he talks about Joseph's father. Jacob was standing there with the bow and he wasn't staying there with an arrow. What is he talking about talking about his faith, he said, is that it about ensuring that is, means his faith did not fail. He kept his ground. He became a conqueror not be arrows coming at him to stop him. He had a in his God I love how the Bible says this that the arms of his hands were made strong, that is this, there might've been arrows coming at him, but he had some weapons that could do a lot more damage than arrows could.

It was his patients. It was his wisdom, it was God's mercy. All these things literally while arrows were coming at him. His hands were made strong, dear friend. You might have a lot of things, human life, but our weapons are not physical.
