Welcome to the Kerwin Baptist Church broadcast today. Our desire is for the word of God spread throughout so that all may know join is now for a portion of one of our services here at Kerwin Baptist Church located in Kernersville, North Carolina Jonah chapter 1 want to look if you would. Verse four will begin. There were we left last week, but the Lord sent out a great wind into the sea and there was a mighty tempest in the sea so that the ship was like to be broken, then the Mariners were afraid and cried every man into his own God and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship and he lay and was fast asleep, so the shipmaster came to him and send him what Minas thou, O sleeper, arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us that we perish not and they said everyone to his fellow come and let us cast lots that we may know, for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots in the lot fell upon Jonah verse eight then said they had to him tell us we pray the for whose cause this evil is upon us. What is thine occupation noticing this, whence comest thou, what is like country and of what people are doubts all the same question.

I mean, they're just there just on him. You know where you from working to be where you from where you live noticing? Verse verse nine and he said to them, I am in Hebrew and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land. Then were the men exceedingly afraid and said to him, why hast thou done this for the men knew that he fled from the presence of the Lord because he told them then said then him, what shall we do indeed of the sea may be common to us for the sea route and was tempestuous. Verse 12 and he said of them take me up and cast me forth into the sea, so shall the sea be common to you, for I know that for my sake.

This great tempest is upon you. Nevertheless the men rode hard to bring it to the land, but they could not for the sea rod and was tempestuous against them.

Wherefore, they cried unto the Lord, and said, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man's life and lay not upon us, innocent blood, for thou, Lord, hast done as it pleased the so they took up Jonah and cast him forth into the sea and the sea ceased from her raging notice for 16 then the men feared the Lord exceedingly and offered a sacrifice unto the Lord, and made valves now want to give special attention to verse 17 and then will begin with our second installment of the book of Jonah.

Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. I believe that the rest of this passage in chapter 1, I want to basically give you some principles out of it that God has made clear, the words this is the story.

This is what God has said that here some principles that we need to learn before we go any further I want you to understand one thing about the book of Jonah, especially about chapter 1 and about your life in my life to listen to me very closely. Sin always brings storms. Sin always brings storms into the soul into the family into a church and into a nation sin always brings storms number one want you to see this is morning fear of safety or fear for safety. The Bible says in verse five that the Mariners were afraid I gotta think about this for a second. All right, now this big storm is, it's not because of these guys on the ship is not their fault, not their problem they didn't cause this but here they are in the middle of the storm and sin always brings a store and now these guys were afraid know what you notice is word Mariners. What is interesting about this word is it means that these men were extremely experienced. Shipman. They had seen all kinds of storms. Now you take one of us that maybe we have been on a boat few times in our life maybe been fishing or maybe a small bass boat or something like that and it you know, with maybe we have been in the Navy and we have been on a lot of those things in and you know it might be that you put us on a ship like this and that little to see the storm comes up like this or storm comes up in order to get really nervous really get really scared because were not used to it were not comfortable with anybody when that boat starts doing this number and y'all know what I'm talking about it if you're somewhat inexperienced storms can start you little bit more but now wait a minute. These guys had seen all kinds of storms but this one scared them to death. Let me take something I notice here.

They had seen what nature could do, but they had never seen what God could do. You've never seen a stall until God brings these guys had seen everything there was to see. They have probably seen what we would consider horrible storms. They were experienced, and yet when God showed up with his storm scare them half to death different.

I want you to understand that when you and I determined to go against God and go a different route do things a different way.

You better hold on because while you think you can just about handle anything in your life. You've never seen anything until God starts intervening. You think things are bad now way to God starts his storm fear for safety, what you know to second. I see futile supplication. That means this Bible says look at notices and cried every man unto his God. It was worthless. These guys and supplication is basically obsolete trying to community and their calling out to their gods. And here they are wasting their time, their gods could not do one thing for them in this storm and we say IN the ridiculous.

So this is a picture of the unsaved. You know that our world right now. People turn to all kinds of gods to deal with the storms in their life.

I mean they're trying everything and you get people desperate enough, but it will finally get on TV and also watching some of these preachers and they'll get so confused and now we see all these Hollywood people and their turning to Kabbalah and their turning to the Christian science movement in their tone during Scientology and they're trying everything they can do to calm the storm in their life. And yet it is absolutely doing nothing and listen to me dear friend, you can try everything in your life to deal with the storm that God is brought, but the only person you can turn to that will ever call that store is Jesus what you notice. Thirdly, I see a fruitless struggle. Notice not only they say the Bible says they cried every man to his own job at notices and says and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea to light did of them all right prayed. I called out to the gods that did not did no good. So I guess I'm just at the start trying to come up with a solution myself and that's what we do. We try everything to fix it. And when we know that we so I don't have to fix it myself as a what they do. They got decided order for everything out of the ship in a light up the ship and maybe it'll keep us safe. Or maybe it will stop the storm a little bit and made we will rock you as much and not what I find.

Here is fruitless struggle and they're doing all this stuff and it wasn't doing any good. There were working so hard, but they were accomplishing so little. What to notice how often you and I work so hard to fix things but we are wasting our time. We work so hard working to fix our kids working to fix our marriage. Working to fix our job working to fix our finances were going to fix it all and I'm good to come up with a way and we work hard and we plan part and we put forth all the effort, but it's absolutely doing nothing in our life. We gotta turn to God. We need God's help in our marriage and we need God's help in our finances. We need God's help in our job. We need God's help. Reason those children it's got to be God you can cast everything off the ship.

If you want to is knocking to do anything to help you in that store what you notice forth. I see false security Bible says this, but Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship and he lay fast asleep and was fast asleep. False security was difficult to get this here he was in danger, but he was unaware of it and unconcerned. Does that not describe us. Sometimes, here we are. We are doing things in our life. It is absolutely reading it, leading us down the wrong road and here we are laid-back relaxed think everything's fine, because were happy and were do we want to do and little do we know we are unaware and unconcerned and don't even realize how bad the storm is coming here in the middle of the storm in the boat, tossing and turning. Jonah is fast asleep, unaware and unconcerned.

Sometimes I feel like that sometimes would charge because Satan is fighting and as a pastor I see kind of an overlook of everybody's life for many times, all you see is maybe your friends and things that, and I'm gonna responsible for a lot of things that I look and I think is fighting any winning the battle sometime don't even seem to care.

We had tried to get even getting the call, unaware, unconcerned were basically sleeping while the storm is going on in which understand something that is I really thought about this.

Listen to me. Why was Joan asleep and here's what I thought, perhaps for some time. He had been avoiding sleeping because the Bible says that God kept coming to Jonah in a dream, saying, go to Nineveh go to Nineveh and as Jonah was fighting against the will of God.

He might not have hardly been sleeping every time I go to sleep God says go to Nineveh go to Nineveh and I want to go to Nineveh and probably through this whole struggle, sleep, and he wasn't getting any rest and finally when he gets down to that ship and he knows that ships are just about to take me to Nineveh and his constant struggle. He probably wasn't sleeping. Was this inward struggle constantly and finally, I think he thought when he got all that said that God would leave them alone. Now I can finally sleep told God no. And maybe God will leave me alone. I think that maybe Jonah finally thought he was out of reach of danger or you get this like I am, he thought. Finally him on this ship. I've made my decision. I'm on my way to Tarsus. Maybe God will finally leave me alone now and I think Jonah probably lay down and there wasn't no dreams come in and there wasn't any commands coming in the dream, and for the first time in a long time. He was sleep and rarely good but little did he know God one sooner dream this time he was soon in the storm.

You know how often you and I will be struggle with what God wants us to do.

How hard it is to sleep we go further and further away from God and almost sometimes we get so far from God on the stay away from church because I get conviction a church metal preacher preaches hard and you holler from the pulpit fence on the stay away from charge and on like you to read my Bible market. I have my devotions and we think we get far enough away from God that we can probably get some rest and you'll finally leave us alone, but different. God love you too much to leave you alone. I think this is probably the best sleep. Jonah had gotten for a long time, but he was finally free God's will.

This to me. I think if I could put it plainly, I think Jonah felt when he left God's will that God would leave him alone. Guess what, dear friend. When you leave God's will. You have this false security that you're doing fine.

You have this false security of faith.

Things are finally there's not as much stress now my life you know what, I'm not as busy. I used to always be running a bus route doing things and visited all the stuff you know now got away from all that. Now I just a more relaxing life just better, you can give yourself all the false security you want to. But I'm here to tell you, you have no ideal. The storm that might be heading into your life.

Here I believe he was in danger and he was unaware and unconcerned when you become a verses that I think along Romans 1311 and that knowing the time that now it is high time to awake out of sleep for now is our salvation nearer than when we believe about is Isaiah 51 beginning in verse 16 God gives instruction to his people and saying design, thou art my people awake, awake, stand up to Jerusalem which has drunk at the hand of the Lord, the cup of his fury that has drunk in the dregs of the cup of trembling and rung them out there is none to guide her.

Among all the sons, whom she had brought forth.

Neither is there any that take of her by the hand. All the sons that she have brought up away away stand up oh, Jerusalem, sometimes you want to say wake up wake up wake up Church of God wake up there's a storm outside your little ship want you to notice before going to the next point. I wrote this down. I want to read this to you as I wanted to make sure I put it down right.

It is the policy of Satan went by his temptations. He has drawn men from God and from the duty God had assigned to rock them asleep in carnal security that they may not even since their misery or danger. Listen to me folks I believe it is Satan's policy when you go against or away from what God wants, he will make you as secure as you've ever been. He will almost make you so secure that you don't even realize the misery in the missing pieces in your life.

False security watch. Look at verse six. If you would. The Bible says this so the shipmaster came to him. Now I want you to understand the shipmaster was the oldest, most experienced, accomplished person on that ship, he was the captain. He was the head. He was the one that had seen it all done at all. Bought a T-shirt off the T-shirt he had he had done everything he knew everything there was nobody ship.

He knew everything there was to know about storms there was anything he had seen.

He was the most experienced. He was the shipmaster and he's the one that came to him in verse six and send him what Minas aloe sleeper arise call upon thy God. Obviously, their gods didn't work and their efforts didn't work so he finally comes to Jonah and says you call upon your God, if so be that God will think upon us that we perish not now what you do is think about this picture for second different. We will have a long time ago just got a few more things in which listen to me. I literally you almost want to PD Jonah that he needed to be reproved from a shipmaster. This was a man of God. We got me this was a preacher, a man of God and yet it took an individual that wasn't even a Christian that knew nothing about God. It took him to reproved Jonah how bad a shape you have to get it as a Christian, where God has even knew somebody say to get your attention. How far away from, do you have to get for that shame. Sometimes the pastor to see individuals that have just determined because they want what they want they get so far away from God. Many times, even individuals that don't even profess to know God or claim to know God. They can even see how wrong it is what they're doing. I've had people come and they have family members that don't even go to church on even Christians. And yet they give better advice to them than they have given to themselves. That's how bad it can get folks when you get away from God.

Even a person that doesn't know God have more sense than you will want to notice verse seven we begin with our principles and I'll go through these will be done this morning and they said everyone to his fellow, let us cast lots that we may know, for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots in the lot fell upon Jonah. Of course it did first principle you see from this passage is this God is in control number one God is in control, dear friend. The Bible even says later on, that God controls the casting of lots. You may think it's luck, you may think I can't get a break dear friend it is nothing but God, who is in control different. I want to know something God will constantly do things in your life to remind you he is in control.

He just is. We can get mad at it we don't like it we can get frustrated, it's not going to change the fact he's in control. What you noticing like a verse eight.

Then said they had him tell us we pray the for whose cause this evil is upon us.

What is on occupation when scum is that what is my country and of what people aren't out here.

Jonah was asked by God. Listen to me to preach to an entire city. He was asked by God. You go went to the Lord, that entire city of Nineveh, and he had not even witnessed the three or four men on the ship, then you know is a Christian then you know is a preacher they didn't know he was a Hebrew. They did know. He feared God because he was generated. Tell them is in the next verse he got on that ship, he did represent Christ.

He didn't share Christ didn't tell anybody about Christ. God wanted him to go to reach a whole city and he could even reach a few men on about anybody else will be convicted by the want you to know to secondly you will always affect others with your decisions. These men didn't do one thing to cause the storm and yet they were in the middle of it to. I watched men that decided they were to do what they wanted to do with there will flesh wanted that marriage broke up.

They hurt a wife.

They hurt children. You go ahead and have your little stubborn thing. Les got on the do what I want to do. Nobody's going to tell me what to do. Nobody can tell me I can't go look at a bunch of mess and do a bunch of mess and you don't get on the computer or go to wrong places.

Nobody could tell me I can do that met with you.

Go ahead and do that must you'll find out the storms that you caused you to bring a whole bunch of people in that storm with your decisions always affect others is selfishness, sin is selfish what you notice there in verse nine and he said unto them, I am in Hebrew and I fear the Lord, what is a shopper, the God of heaven which have made the sea and the dry land. Other words God controls the water fellows. God controls the land. It's me on the problem. Nobody else controls the water. But God know what else controls the land but God. He owns all he's in control what you notice. Thirdly, verse 10 then were the men exceedingly afraid and send him, why hast thou done this.

That's a real good question in what you do it. I've sent off the people.

Why did you do this to your wife number three there is never a good reason to run from God, never a good reason.

I mean you us and always big on teenagers because a teenager go out to some absolutely ridiculous and mom and dad a ring. As I watch you do it was just a young person.

However, it will only bring you in mom and dad let me ask you something what you do this what you're going down this road. Why are you making these decisions different.

There's never a good reason to run from God. I get to the point in everyone and everything and you're not even have a good reason why you did bottom line is selfish or that's a real good reason to ruin her life, what you notice on both of these quickly, obviously. And by the way, there's never good reason to go against God, and run against God, but you always see it after you always see it after when it's all said and done, Blewitt we don't ever see it before but we always see it after when you notice next verse in verse Genesis for the men knew that he fled from the presence of the Lord because he had told him look. Verse 11 then said they had to him what shall we do unto the that the sea may be common to us for the sea rot and was tempestuous to me when the world can we do to stop this what you notice. Fourthly, running from God always causes turmoil always cause look at me running from God never causes peace. That's that false security. Satan will give you running from God never causes peace. It always causes turmoil.

You write it down a little black book.

Eventually, there's going to be turmoil want to notice verse 12 and he said under them take me up casting forth into the sea, so shall the sea be common to you, for I know that for my sake. This great tempest is upon you. Once you notice next we find this that God did not do this to Jonah. Jonah did this to himself. You get that principle. Everybody says they're gonna end up finally off the ship cast off into a C we find out obviously sit in the belly of a fish and we always want to say I just don't understand why God allowed this to happen. I don't understand why God and provide protection for me. I don't understand why God would let things get like this, dear friend.

We can't blame God for our sin. God didn't do this to Jonah but it was also understandably gobbled it up to me and put them in the belly of a fish. Can you imagine how nasty that was yeah I can imagine how nasty that was an old Jonah knows you better than anybody how nasty it was, but nobody did to Jonah. But Jonah Daniel Hunter.

He can't blame any of you for my sin is my all God to do this to Jonah.

Jonah did this to Joan know the hardest time is to have people understand you've got to take personal responsibility for your decisions.

Our society tells you blame everybody else get a government grant for which it is verse 13. Hello this one. Nevertheless the men rode hard to bring it to the land, but they could not for the sea rot in the tempestuous was against them. Now that is either going to try to outrun the storm. Bad decision once you notice next God will always win. God will always with a teenagers look at me fighting.

If you want to. I just want you know in your life.

God's can win is going to win moms and dads to get smart as you want. Think you can. You have accomplished everything you can accomplish and entice him start fight against God, he's gonna win. You can you can roll as hard as you can. You can fight the storm as much as you can, but that storms can wear you down and eventually you realize I cannot win this battle against God is never lost about yet. If Satan can defeat them. You think you're going to want to knows what verse 14 wherefore they cried to the Lord and said, we beseech the allure, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man's life and lay not upon us, innocent blood, for thou, Lord has done, as it has pleased the so they took up Jonah and casting forth into the sea and by the way, that's where all the unsaved friends are really is another lesson on its own. When the going gets tough to cast you out right when you get arrested there gonna blame you when there's trouble to be had to say was your idea. I give you illustration of illustration built in verse 15 so they took up Jonah cast forth into the sea and the cc were arranging. Then the men fear the Lord exceedingly and offered a sacrifice on the Lord and made valves. By the way, that's what's always done when a person finally fears God. Now they want to sacrifice to make about yummy time somebody makes a mess of their life buddy, their wife left him.

They been drunk so many times and gotten caught with this stuff so made up and the wife on the Lee Simmons had it and then they run to the altar and they want to say I promise on the promise got all never to get now they want to make the bow and now they want to make the sacrifice that should've been done.

We did before want to notice next. I thought this was good for 17 all this went on the folic acid in the water. Now the Lord had prepared a great fish. By the way, Matthew chapter 12 verse 40, God tells us it was a whale. That's the best word used in the King James version. You can argue that all you want to it. If you want to do we know is a great fish Bible says verse 17 now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights that phrase. Now the Lord had prepared a great fish. Listen to me if you think about the fact that he gets cast into the sea of fish swallows him didn't shoo him didn't bite him swallow him whole and the fact that he is swallowed by this fish that for us. Out of all that CN you know any of you ever been deep-sea fishing around large body of water. It gets very big out there, and the fact that that fish was right there where the ship was a member the snowstorm so that sheepskin tossed to and fro in the fact that the one fish that God had prepared the one fish was in the right place at the right time, and he swallowed him and he didn't shoo him and he lives in the belly of that fish, which means he was able to breathe air underwater say something you got a look at this whole thing about this fish will be different this fish did not swallow Jonah to kill him. This fish swallow Jonah to save him. He would drown you in a.everybody's is like you believe God would do that.

God saved his life and what I find interesting is is that God had pre-paired. That means it wasn't all of a sudden Jonah falls out.

God looks on a there's a fish, let me describe that fish over by this fish had been prepared.
