Fretting Is Exhausting

My high school chemistry teacher’s name was, no kidding, Mr. Faile. While a hilarious and exceptional teacher, he made the dreaded (for some) class even more daunting by posting a sign over the chalkboard that read, “Flunk Now and Avoid The Rush.”

For those born after 1980, a chalkboard was an ancient education device that doubled as a screeching torture machine.

That sign still sticks with me, and I’ve appropriated the message into other areas of my life – particularly as a caregiver. Accepting reality and not delaying the inevitable becomes a path of wisdom rather than a depressing conclusion. As caregivers, we place unreasonable demands on ourselves to achieve or alter things we cannot change.

Despite extensive striving and colossal anxiety, caregivers will inevitably “flunk” at changing most of what we worry about. Embracing that premise allows greater peace of mind today.

I passed high school chemistry (barely), but Mr. Faile’s most important lesson to me had nothing to do with formulas and equations. A simple sign meant in jest communicated a greater truth that still helps bleed off stress – a lifetime later.

Rest now and avoid the crash. We face challenges better when not exhausted by fretting.

“The pitcher has got only a ball. I've got a bat. So the percentage in weapons is in my favor and I let the fellow with the ball do the fretting.” – Hank Aaron

This is the nation's number one program family care a hold on with you for the 65 million Americans right now are serving as a family caregiver for you. One of, if so, you're in the right place if you will be part of the program that something you want to share common liver go to help the caregiver.com. Hopefully caregiver.com visual forms are, and whatever is in your heart if you want me to email you back and try to do that because he from the program that whatever is on your heart. I encourage you to reach out, you know, we caregivers struggle with isolation is one of the biggest issues we face and the disease of our love.

One of the impairment of her love, one often lends itself to isolation for a lot of reasons. Some of it because of logistics others because behavior can be very embarrassing. A friend of mine is a mother of two children resulted in taking her small child to go get a haircut was difficult to imagine that putting scissors around the kid with autism rhymes on his face, and she wanted. We had a meltdown but get a haircut into one have a T-shirt on those that don't judge his autism because you people don't know and then then people can be difficult when they see things that they don't understand. So sometimes we caregivers isolate ourselves just avoid that none of those are good things. If you go back and look at Genesis, they did the first thing the guys I will consider this the first thing the gods I said that was not good was that man was alone.

That was before man fell, and you know being alone. God himself that that's not good. And yet we caregivers try to do this alone. And that's not good.

So what can we do about it. Well, we can reach out to one another. We had these conversations. That's why do this program and I'm very grateful for all of the networks affiliate security this program. American family radio Truth Network's radio so many other affiliates around the country that run this program. I'm very grateful to the because for the vast majority of my journey as a caregiver. Now my 36th year and I didn't have any, support system, I like what were offering here and quite drizzly there really is no other support system like what were offering here on this program. A lifetime of experience to offer a lifeline to fill caregivers to learn concepts and precepts and strategies in biblical principles, how to navigate this a little calmer little healthier and dare I say a little more joyfully and so if this is where you are.

We are glad to have used for the program. If you're struggling in this area you're in the right place.

The thinking being a part of what were doing.

I want to talk a little bit about two words that you find in Scripture.

Psalm 37 the first two words that since Fred not rec.for it in that a great word for it. Fret not over evildoers is what he says and holiday resistance on the reasonably mistake that, fret not, how much threading do we do is caregivers what's our life like on a daily basis when it comes to stress and anxiety and angst and all those things and I'm reminded of a teacher I had in high school now. I was not the best student I freely admit this. I graduated.

Thank you. Loud and chemistry was a daunting subject for me on a good in my teachers name and I really like this Person actually would sometimes electric would play chess.

I was learning play chess at upbeat topic to my chemistry teacher there asked what his name was Mr. Hale.

I kid you not. His name was Mr. Howe set forth features and you go in his classroom. He had great sense of humor, wonderful teacher, one for you would be. I just was not a good pupil chemistry that was just not my subject. I did did well in history and things such as that in English and but not in chemistry or physically taught physics to we had a sign over the chalkboard. Now, by the way, for those of you who don't know what chalkboard is.

It's an ancient teaching device that was used many many many many years ago. Also, if you ran your fingernails done it would provide a suitable torture device is well for many, but Mr. Phil had the sign over his chalkboard as you walk to room six. For now, but avoid the rush flock that with the rush that was particularly funny. But it is stuck with me all these years that sign was a funny it was meant to be funny and I know this is a comical message but it stuck with me and I think that for me that sign just becomes increasingly relevant in my life as a caregiver, because accepting reality and not delaying the inevitable can become a path of wisdom rather than a depressing conclusion. I'm not advocating that students cut in flood classes early, but the principle of it is it is caregivers. We replace unreasonable demands ourselves to achieve or alter things we can't change. You know, and despite extensive striping and we do a lot of that I do, but you but I do and colossal anxiety that I do a lot of that to caregivers will inevitably flock that changing most the things that we worry about were going to flunk were not going to change these things but that it would stop us from fretting we fret, fret, fret, and embracing that premise of flunk now avoid the rush except reality now.

It does allow a greater peace of mind today. Drill is what I could change this now past high school chemistry. But Mr. fails most important lesson to me decades later had really nothing to do with formulas of education. I don't think I can remember eating chemistry formulas. Nothing comes to you. Trust that I don't think I get the weather simple sign that he had in his classroom. It was mid and just communicated a greater truth that still helps me bleed off stress lifetime later rest now and avoid the crash. That's with that science estimate rest now and avoid the crash we face challenges better when were not exhausted by Freddie. Don't you agree Freddie is exhausted. It is truly exhausted. Fret and to stay torqued up try for an hour and you'll be you. You want to take a nap we need is exhausted and yet we constantly do this to ourselves. Hank Aaron baseball great Hall of Famer baseball great Hank here. He said a quote that I really like you said the picture as that only about seven I got back so the percentage in weapons and is in my favor and I let the fellow with the ball do all the Freddie now they say that hitting a fastball major league is one of the toughest things. It almost forced to be able to do, but here's Hank Aaron homerun king Hank Aaron just amazing towering individual on the national landscape and he's not ready when he gets in the batters box, accomplishing the hardest thing that you can do in sports which is to hit a fastball major league fastball is a holiday. Got to go for it think Hank Aaron was onto something.

Maybe we don't have to get into the batters box and face the things that a lot of people say would be very daunting.

Maybe we don't have to fritter maybe we can just relax into it and swing away, but the bat on the ball know you put the bat on the ball speak a baseball you put the bat on the ball three times out of 10 when they put you in the whole thing reality and putting this unreasonable pressure on us to achieve perfection or to achieve some kind of result that is beyond our abilities cripples us and it compromises our ability to live a healthier life. But it's always healthy caregivers make better caregivers talk about this a bit more this is Peter Rosenberg Hopefully caregiver but is that what you think it hopefully caregiver.com will be right back up your Rosenberger many years ago when my wife Grace became a AA PT.

She sold the importance of quality prosthetics. He saw the importance of a support team and people that could help her regain her life after losing both legs.

She had this vision of creating an organization that would help others do the very same thing while pointing them to Christ and for more than 17 years we been doing just that we purchase supplies. We send equipment and we train recent teams over to West Africa.

We've been working with the country of Ghana. Several clinics over there now and each week more people walk because of Gracie's vision 2011. We watched the new program outreach to family caregivers. Drawing on my mail 36+ years is gracious caregiver through medical nightmare for insights have learned all of the hard way to fellow caregivers to help them stay strong and healthy will take care of some is not. You would be part of this go out to stand without.com/giving stayed with the calm/giving stayed with hope and those careful daily without.com/giving. We hope we caregiver the speed Rosenberg. This is the program for you as a family caregiver were so glad that you are with this here American family radio as well as the Truth Network's radio at all of our other affiliates. Glad to have you part of the journey of helping caregiver.

Stay strong and healthy while taking care of someone who is not. Hopefully caregiver.com and while you're out.

It hopefully caregiver.com. Take a look around. I put out some of the recent articles I've written. I very grateful that a lot of different folks choose to publish my stuff and I like to write and they seem to be willing to keep publishing so there's couple things out there, Tribune media has picked up and put in a bunch of their family of publications New York Daily News and so forth the other part of that family and they carry some of my things. The Washington times.

I don't really go into the political world too much as a writer for like the others play people's going that they don't leave my two cents. But I do try to speak to things in that world.

The caregivers point of view and there's one out there that I think that you will find meaningful. It's about elected officials who just refuse to retire but you notice that in their serving way past their abilities and this is not new to me, and yet we see this a lot in today's 24 new cycle, but this actually started minimizing myth years ago, one glaring example is Woodrow Wilson, who was basically incapacitated for the latter part of his presidency, but nobody knew it except the inner circle. I'm sure it was open secret to a lot of folks in Washington, but his wife, Edith pretty much ran the show and she admits it and I wrote about this in this column that the Washington times published and in fact Woodrow Wilson is one of the reasons we have the 25th amendment, but as a caregiver you will understand the trap that we can fall into within a blink, you know this is something we talked about how this program a lot and a lot of people are propped up way beyond their capabilities of Strom Thurmond.

I'm from South Carolina and Strom Thurmond was seen at reception pocketing buffalo wings into his suit jacket pocket in the barbecue sauce and sauce whatever was dripping out of his jacket pocket, a big reception at the time he was fourth in line to the presidency another guy from Georgia. I don't remember this back in 2010, but he was in a congressional hearing and they were talking about building up a number of Marines on the island of Guam and this representative who is still in Congress.

May I remind you that you don't interjected he was concerned that the surplus population in the island of Guam would cause the island to tip over. I kid you not. Look it up. I kid you not. And so we see these kinds of things happening. And there's this enabling component that we know the stories of of drug addicted rock stars went out on stage and and and all kinds of stuff and there's always this bunch of people seems to be around. That's fueling this on because they're making money off these people. He sent them out there to do it but they're making money off of their in power because of it, and there were reticent to have an intervention. Essays time step off the stage there that you be like killing the goose that laid the golden egg and so these poor folks are set out there to continue doing this you can look at the news today and see it for yourself see the ones who are being propped up and it's not limited to politics you seated churches you see it in universities you see it in every walk of life. The difference is in politics with you have elected officials, particularly national figures.

They have an impact on the nation's security and economic health, and they make decisions or their staffers are making decisions for them.

You don't Edith Wilson said in her biography. My memoirs called.

She said I made sure that you know I didn't do anything. I decide anything, or I didn't think I but I was one that was that he what went to the president well but then he would go to the present. She's already changing things she's deciding nobody that voted for Edith Wilson to be president. They voted for Woodrow Wilson and so that's the kind of thing that we as caregivers can spot a little easier than some because we live in that work. We have folks are impaired. We've had the conversation of take away the keys. Sometimes we would take away the remote control to the DVD and yet their people with that level of cognitive impairment that are in our nations corridors of power. You know so much of what goes on in our country.

90% of this note.

Previous to this years ago. 90% of this could be solved by term limits. But how do you get people to vote themselves out of a job. That's not happening that I don't know the answer to this, I can just eliminate the issue from a caregiver standpoint and I think the people who are family members of these elected officials really are the most culpable they know they know their loved one is impaired, but there propping about sitting about there in front of the light and do it all the stuff just so they can stay in power or further their agenda. You go read your papers. Look at the evening news. You don't have to do more than five minutes on a Google search and you'll start seeing who these individuals are and there's no way to hold them accountable. At this point there's nobody out there clamoring for this to stop at with any kind of teeth to it is just partisan, whatever, but I felt the need to write about it, thought it and see if you like the article right next to that one as I know I write for rugs they should call the club reports a publication that it deals with a lot of doctrinal theology stuff that goes up to the PCA and the reformed theology world and the editor there, Dominic Willow, who's been on this program.

He's very gracious to publish my stuff and I've got one that was prompted by call to the show. You always ask callers how are you feeling and I member this color sheet you will start off with a blast. But then she lost into this real diatribe against her mother and and I'm not so sure. I have to go back and listen to the call, but I'm not so sure she didn't say I blessed but I hate my mom took everything in it was visible the invisible good was radio it was palpable. Even through the radio. It just used a five dollar word from the five dollar word box you don't, but you could tell her demeanor changed.

But the issue was not the. The feeling she had towards her mother. So I wrote the article, it's the fact that she leads off with this spiritual God talk and and I don't think that we in our bifurcated society which you say about that work which is straining already to have any kind of you know peaceful conversations that we need to have this God talk. I think people need and want and deserve quite truthfully just plain speech. I mean I think about all the doctors that if helped me with Gracie over the years well over 100 physicians that I could go through and just listed, then all the ones that were on call or whatever and always appreciated the doctors who didn't try to talk over my head you know that they they just talk to me like normal and they didn't use a lot of fancy words to put me in my place or to Sam or whatever they just help me understand what was going on it, you know, for those of you with chronic medical conditions. I know you, but in that situation and how much do you appreciate you know when somebody does talk over your head or when you get a bureaucrat that's trying to tell you all the forms you get aside and they just did you feel like this to fill out this this of the 229 three to unite all the stuff might come on just talk like a normal person will we do that with our faith do we do that with matters of the heart. If not, why not just talk like a normal person if I wrote about this in the acquittal reported that you could see other things that I've written there.

Put a link to see all the other things that I got several things in Washington have several things it's been lots of things at Fox News and various things it just kinda hit me and I write from the perspective of caregivers you know it and I I see these things differently. We talk about our government being $30 trillion in debt and so often write about things like stewardship, which is a word that we don't use a lot more society, but we as caregivers understand the concept. We have to be good stewards of our resources including ourselves because we are the primary resource for somebody who is impaired or is extremely needy. Are we being good stewards and if we have a mountain of debt have to we care for someone else will think about that from a political point from our nation. We have a mountain of debt. How can we care for ourselves. Let's look at the southern border national security if we have no boundaries.

How can we be a healthy nation we think about. It's not a political issue is a stewardship issue. Now it's made into a political issue because people have agendas they want to compromise stuff they want to alter this but you and I know as caregivers that the healthiest way to take care of someone is to incorporate appropriate boundaries in our life and and when we don't were overrun by the needs of the level Mercury for sometimes we have to take a step back, sometimes we have to secure a border, a boundary what's so hard about that and so those are things that apply in the political world that we as caregivers understand healthy caregivers make better caregivers.

We talk about that the last block you know when were fretting all the time when were getting all worked up about stuff will our country right now is just as toxic brew of threat. Everybody is just dealing with high levels of anxiety and how is that going to help us be a healthy nation were just mountains and it everybody's at each other's throat we're we are split down the middle. We've got this now this thing with Roe versus Wade. We get all these things that are just clawing at us, how in the world. We can be healthy nation and I think that we look to the principles that help us become healthy caregivers is the same way. We need more grace. We need a sense of purpose and direction that unites us how all of these things we talked about at the show, and when he good stewardship GPS. This Peter Rosenberg got more to go. Got a great interview. The next block will be right back
