And and and this is caregiver. This is Rosenberg this is the show for as a family caregiver more than 65 million people right now are putting themselves between vulnerable of what even worse disaster may be that you feel are you doing what's going on with you that this show is all about strengthening the family caregiver healthy caregivers make better caregivers and you can see more@hopeforthecaregiver.com and we are glad that you are with this and if you want to be part of the show. 885-8988 40 888-589-8840 before we get into our topic for today in the Scriptures about to give the Scripture on the front and because this can give away the song, but I like to start off with a song just go to the caregiver keyboard and do a salty you may know, and if you do know, feel free to call and we'll talk about why the song means something to you but the larger picture is why this is something something to fiddle caregivers and what can we glean from this so head over to the caregiver. This is a very easy little course came out many years ago and I've always loved this love people seeing this is around singers around but see if you know the so you know this is a simple song is based on several places in Scripture. 888-589-8840 888-589-8840 if you know that so and talk about why that applies to kickers. I want to get them something very quickly here that we as caregivers don't necessarily talk about very much, but it's important for us to Gracie's home.

My wife is home. She those you don't just enjoying the show.

Couple weeks ago she had a bad fall and her prosthetic leg was stuck in. She twisted and fell, but her leg did not interfere broke.

It was a pretty dramatic and and airlift during surgery and you got it was pretty uncomfortable. She's home and she is recuperating. That is where the seat was fast.

She liked but she is doing well all things considered I've seen surgical events with Hurco really self, and this is this is been relatively smooth, considering her complications when she is home caregiver authority caregiver authority. You know what I mean when I talk about that we as caregivers have developed particular if you been doing this for some some time we have developed a an understanding of our loved one that is significant and significant to the medical community that will be treating them or that district. Most people will get a couple minutes here there with our loved one, but you and I spend a lifetime doing this.

In my case, you know 35 years and I don't necessarily need to know the science of all the goes on with Gracie but I know Gracie and I'm there all the time and just for the longevity of what I do I pick up quite a bit. Now I've a graduate from music school. My degree was in composition in arranging and piano principle they can teach me anything stuff and music school, and I do talk about the other professor at least once or twice a month from college and he's well.

It is 80s now and just a wonderful fellow and he said he periodically said, look, you didn't even cover this kind of stuff you do in music theory class. But this is that this is life and and I've had to adapt and be flexible and learn on the fly. So what is that knowledge worth that I've amassed over these years, and I've been in many situations with medical personnel who wish to tell me to step off you know and and polite way sometime sometimes not so politely and they think they jump in with both feet into Gracie situation, thinking that they are going to do this and this and this and you know I can't always that that's a difficult thing to tilt to navigate because I don't want to interfere but at the same time. If she gets hurt because they do something out of ignorance to the complexities of her case. I have to be the one cleans it up and I've been there.

I've been there when they given her too much stuff to little stuff the wrong stuff and I've been there when she's seized when she's coded when she followed out of the hospital bed. I would not would when there was a fail, but that left her for a few moments the nurses must wash her shirt if they did and and I'm the one that has to clean it up and I'll bet you are to that's what we as caregivers do we we clean up and I learned a long time ago. Of these two words that I think a good be important for each of us as caregivers to hang onto it as we go through various things and rarely do I give tips on caregiving on this show on the task of kicking because it's unique to every situation. I can't tell you how to take care of your level anymore. You could tell me how to take care of mind but there are some common principles that go along with this and I want to remember these two words okay you write them down if you have to put it in your phone just remember these two words caregiver authority.

To my knowledge I coined this caregiver authority. You have authority as a caregiver of your love one you know them. You know their chart. You know the circumstances, you don't have to know the science but you know them and it's very important for you not remember that in situations now the world is moving away on a lot of things in the way they they do medicine there doing care by committee now and I had an experience of that recently where I had to sit down with the committee and they started in a couple of these folks started in a little bit with me rather heavy-handed and I was I was not combative doesn't just too tired for that of been there but I'm just too tired, but I was not, but I didn't back down and I think that these folks were not used to somebody that approach than the same way I did as a family member secured but I looked around the room and I realized very quickly that I was taking care of Gracie were some of these people were even born and I realized they were bringing Mitch patient equation cannot experience.

In my experience trumps opinion and hearest us to talk about that will come back 589-8840 885-8980 Rosenberg. This is the show as a caregiver or banging your head against the wall and sleepless nights doing laundry late into the night. What care of a loved one. If you been back and forth. The pharmacies doctor's office, hospitals, rehab centers, if this is your life you in the right place and were glad you with us. 888-589-8840 888-589-8840 would go to get the calls a minute.

Here's a caregiver keyboard.

Here's our song for today display little bit of it. If you know that song 888-589-8840 refresher. The reason I do these folks that's got a very easy title to remember and we need easy titles to remember as caregivers, we cannot remember complex thing sometimes when it's all hitting and we got have simple things that can that that that anchor us into a greater truth than what were facing right in front of us got the what were facing in front of us is not truth is just there is a greater truth and that greater truth is the reality of the gospel and if we know if we can hang on to those things in the midst of it would adjust all goes completely we can navigate these things a little easier to go back to what we talked about in the last block caregiver authority want you to remember that once you write that down. You have caregiver authority. You do not have to know the science in order to have this you just simply know your loved one and it's okay. It's very intimidating to talk to train medical professionals at time. I'm not quite as put off by that is I used to be when I first started on this journey. I mean, I thought doctors were God and a lot of reinforce that thought with her came to be a point when I had to push back because some of them get it wrong. All of them will get it wrong at some point, but some got wrong with when dealing with grace and one doctor. He was can give me a little bit of attitude and I stopped in for moment and I looked at him and I said with all due respect Doc, I was taking care of her when you were in junior high school, so let's get this thing in perspective here. I look at the folks who had said that with this care committee team now and obviously could graciously do this is a bureaucracy, but this was the first major surgery I had with Gracie in some time and she said smaller stuff this is this a major event and and so they, they, swarming with this committee approach now and I'm used to just deal with the doctor with the flow stuff from there okay whatever, but I watched all these kids telling me this and this and this and if there was a little bit of condescending I'm being diplomatic. I got a friend about his listing right now and I know that I'm going to Texas. It was not a little bit of condescending. There was a lot of but there was condescension going on. You know whom I have just some guy just disgraced husband and I had to let them feel the weight of who I was and understand the complexity of this woman in what they were missing, but I do this in a way that they would understand and respect and and I did but I wasn't combative with there was there with. I think they thought they went up back me up and put me in my place, and in adding back and I'm not going to because I'm the one that has to clean up when it goes wrong and it's not that I want to tell them how to do their job is just that I don't want them to number one do something out of arrogance or ignorance. This could hurt Gracie further and make my life more difficult make Gracie's life much more painful. So that's it is nothing more complex than that and that's weight is for all of us is caregivers particular would do with long-term stuff like this where we are the ones that are having to do the vast majority of the.

The hands-on work, you know, the surgeon worked on Gracie with his expertise.

He fixed her leg but on the gathered seer 24 seven.

You know, and so we we know these things as as caregivers we know these things and it's okay for us to wield that authority wielded responsibly. We don't want to come across as heavy-handed, but we don't have to back up and I just felt like some of you all would benefit from that. This morning, knowing that you have to back up. I got a cousin who who has a special needs daughter and she's a tiger shoe sheep shoe. There is no backup in her. My brother and my sister-in-law. They have especially stuck is no backup there not mean people they just just so experienced this, I got friends of ours down in the valley here where we live, we live several miles down the valley and and and they got especially son.

They they have to fight and they're not mean-spirited people.

They just know that you know in this hustle and bustle world complex cases kind of get you know there's there's a lot of moving pieces and when it comes to your your father or your mother that you're taking care of your special needs family member.

Whatever you have caregiver authority. Are you okay with it if you want to know more about that. Feel free to call at 888-589-8840 888-589-8840 were going to get to the song here in just a moment, but I will go to the calls here will see this is Robin in Virginia Robin good morning are you feeling I have working all night. 9 o'clock last night, but not particularly doing a caregiving job point in time, just a different kind of a job, but I an overnight job so I could be available for my mom 95 and will hurt you, how you feeling today I'm working a job and that I just feel like I'm excited to be doing something that's a little bit more creative and artful as a predicate, like working on the overnight with FedEx or the packet handler that I am. I only worked about 9 1/2 hours so my fear tired, but my spirit is good and listen to you for about a about a year and half now and that I thought I would try to, not that I'm currently being a caregiver and a pain situation. I have been in the past.

Her like a friend of the family who had gone through brain surgery to take it to route that would about 27 years ago 26 years ago, my mom is 95 and I know that she is aging and that things are going to happen.

My sister and I are being much more available to assist her live and I've been a couple things Robin if you don't manage company at one of Ms. Michelle is not really for paid caregivers to get something out of what I'm talking about the show is for the family caregiver for those solicit differences of a paycheck. That was the difference you Gracie LB a lot of backpay. Just a lot of backpay. The second thing I love what you said your mom is 95 – she's aging know Robert you Bob sorry all you you are a stay at that full you know, I love that song but ironic thing is your topic.

It would my mom worked in count 84 1/2 and and so, as she had been a caregiver professionally for her career since she was a high school or college youth actually trained IBM by the Army and then he met World War II, she couldn't go in there, but I think sometimes when people are sharp and her mom lived to be almost 100 when people are sharp and they're smart and they do care you know and she firms you could be a good charge nurse when she needs to be.

I feel like he'd be able calm and loving and kind as I possibly can because in a cross 13th and Dr. eyes.

Even now she's doing really well.

So I get to like it can be a challenge. That's the main reason I took an overnight job that can be with her during and spent time with her now.

Well I think that is what I was talking that there's a rancher friend buy down the road is 95 as some last month is the birthday that's it is that here's your birthday today so what is as it was August 12. Lisa will yet is assisted you 95 Bill. He looked to be tilted as it is that you know that's got old and blessed Bill you are so old it when you went to high school you drove a chariot of the your your old well but he sees is a ways out, walk around and have a great time and live in this.

I guess that's the benefit of hard-working clean air out here in Montana but your mom sounds like she's that same kind of person. Just just keep on chugging. It will tell you very will go to break. What's the song and for those who want to get on the song even if somebody else gets it. The point is not to have musical tribute.

The point is, for what is the song mean to you, but what is the song Robin Wright my mom Montana and found I that'll do it right and to Billington.

He was born just north of red light will I know exactly what is because we just that for a while. The best leagues at the hospital are so right, the song you are my hiding place on my hiding place and not a great so what I'm doing now is the fact that she can still walk around your building and sometimes I feel like that's when the Lord can think in terms of just taking a quiet walk with her. Even though her knees are going and I just felt something fall that the Lord through Corrie 10 boom and Paul great. You know Corrie 10 boom led Gracie to the Lord is this, that she was like six years. Great story that will get into another call we got to go to break and think that it best to your mom.

She sounds like she is just one this Rosenberg this is hope for the care.

This is the show for you as a caregiver.

888-589-8840 will be right back speaker Rosenberg and my 3 1/2 decades as a caregiver.

I've spent my share of nights in the hospital sleeping and waiting rooms on foldout cot shares.

Even the floor sometimes on sofas and a few times in the doghouse. But let's still talk about that as caregivers we have to sleep at uncomfortable places but we don't have to be miserable. We use pillows for my pillow.com. These things are great. They have a patented interlocking feel that adjusting your individual sleep needs and for caregivers.

Try to sleep in all the different places we have to sleep leave me our needs get ripped up significantly.

When using your promo code caregiver is my pillow.com promo code caregiver family care staff part of doing here and get a copy that she did want to hope the caregiver.com works is giving you can help us do more if you like to show up as to what we just probably we have two different program outreaches. We have these. The caregiver outreach were doing right now and then we also have a prosthetic limb outreach the Gracie vision. After she gave both of her legs and we purchase in ship equipment and sponsor patients over the West African country of Ghana primarily have other countries we work with periodically. Mostly there and we just shipped over regular supply a supply of resident acrylic resin we could use your help on doing more disk as this is an ongoing need of resin to make the sockets that the limbs fit is equipped to hope for the kick of her.com get involved today if you like what you're hearing on the show help us do it more so today is you are my hiding place. Robin got that and the lyrics of this. You are my hiding place. You always fill my heart with songs of deliverance when ever I am afraid I will trust in you. Now let's go to the some 4017.

As for me I am poor and needy. But the Lord takes thought for me. You are my help and my deliverer, do not delay all my God they must go to some 32 seven. You are my hiding place you preserve me from trouble you surround me with songs of deliverance, that why it is important to us as a caregiver.

If you've ever stood in the hospital hallway alone watching your loved one go off to surgery or if you've ever walk that long distance from the parking garage at the hospital to the rumor back and forth in the middle the night.

Whatever those songs of deliverance are surrounding you.

Even at that point.

If you've been woken up in the middle of the night was some type of trauma going on.

Songs of deliverance are right there if you've ever had to deal with the reality of a loved one with the addiction that is spiraling out of control will all addictions and control those songs of deliverance right there for you if you've dealt with the trauma of dealing somebody with mental illness. Those songs of deliverance are right there surrounding that's the whole point. The hiding place goes with you because God is with you all around you, you were not outside his purview.

Okay.

And so when it gets gnarly for us. That's what this particular song can settle your spirit and realize you are my hiding place. You always fill my heart with songs of deliverance when ever I'm afraid I will trust you. That's a soft caregivers with their soulless go to Luke in a Georgia Luke good morning Lupe Philip Norton what are oh I'm sorry says, looking at here. I'm sorry Luther Luther how you feeling well. What you get on your mother this morning. All of the counter, looking caregiver not come a lot with her family, on the letter, I found it very difficult for her, but my mom and my walk with you that you and I declare you're not an amount that was good you do with use. Luther you caregiving or should your wife. This caregiving you both are in you taking care of your taking care of whom now okay but not in what's going on with her sister will not working like that sister has diabetes and she is now on Higginbotham while my got television, overhead will if you could describe your wife's current circumstances and maybe one word, what would that be to get a better picture of what's going on with your wife will will is there anybody else that can sub in for herbicide. You want her brother. I am none of the heart found that 39 to bring in to bring in any kind of service that would help with your sister-in-law, and can't not be able to continue doing that on, what can you do it you know just like one day a week, fingers. It did even that's out of the reach, but is that a financial decision.

Okay how old is your sister-in-law. Okay, before going okay and and if it happens to you. If something happens to your wife. What's the plan for your sister-in-law. When I went on I care as opposed to her other sister. I don't think that would happen is that other sister unwilling or unable unable and unwilling does it.

Is it possible for you guys to sit and have some kind of meeting with someone. This involved with your sisters can't your sister-in-law's care. The layout of a plan of care because this is the at the rate you're going, basically here's here's what's gonna happen. Luther at the rate you're going, this is going to consume your wife and then ultimately consume you. Somebody somebody that have a funeral and weathers good to you, your wife or your sister-in-law. All three of you eventually go to have one. It just depends on how this thing plays out. It's visible in order to have the mid-so if go down first. If so, how is your health. By the way, Luther. Okay several bypass surgery Morocco well you fit okay look, if you have several bypass surgery, list backup okay is not the word I would look for.

Even though you could certainly cover my active life but how is your house you wait.

Luther hey Tony and how tall are you okay I has a cholesterol rank now, one cannot around 100 okay I got you got your wife's weight how's her weight try to get a new business. I just has has awakened our life 100 probably okay and how's her cholesterol okay don't so here's our plan. So here's what this thing is Hank hanging out Luther. Here's what here's where we here's where you guys are you guys are you guys are driving on a very, very winding mountain road and there's not many guardrails and it's at night in your headlights are not working properly.

That's how dangerous this is. So this is going to the stress of this thing is going to if your wife is wore out. She's on insulin.

She's diabetic Udo overweight and okay. She's got a lot of situations going on here and she's taking care of somebody who's also in bad shape. You are doing okay at this point, but you still have some some underlying issues. This situation requires immediate action list that immediate action sit down and have a care plan for all three of and that's can take a train, provide somebody that's got some kind of experience in and so forth to sit there with you guys like this thing out. There's going to be a funeral. This will be three funerals. We just don't know what orders are to come in yet but if if if your wife goes first.

Then your sister-in-law and you are going to have a brutal experience dealing with this.

If you go first, that your wife is left holding the bag.

If your sister-in-law go then you go to be taking care of your wife. All three of you made a plan of care.

When's the last time you saw your doctor. Luther all it was last time you wife saw her doctor last night and came on. What is the result of this oil are there will never find that know that since this is like. I like a lot that she got on her dating apartment and she had to okay Lutheran, Luther and I just could be blunt with you here because that just the nature of what we talk about here.

How sustainable is this moment exactly right. He asserted that best that's the right answer. You guys are really heading for some very dangerous water. If your doctor just say… You just keep on keeping on you to get a different Dr. Denise to be an aggressive plan of care for all three of Dr. Army anything to do that. Well if you don't have a doctor that you going to need to see some type of caseworker care work in some type of social worker somebody that can get you a plan of care have this thing is yours is a team would come out to all talk about this on the next block, next don't go to the right here.

I'll give you some thoughts and hang on just listen on and I will talk about what you can do the next block speed. Rosenberger never helped somebody walk for the first time I've had that privilege many times through our organization. Standing with hope when my wife Gracie gave up both of her legs follow this horrible Rick that she had as a teenager and she tried to save them for years and if it just wouldn't work out.

And finally she relinquished him and thought wow this is that I'm not happy legs anymore. What can God do with that and then she had this vision for use in prosthetic limbs as a means of sharing the gospel to put legs on her fellow amputees and that's what we been doing now since 2005 was standing with hope. We work in the West African country of Ghana and you can be a part of that through supplies through supporting team members through supporting the work that we're doing over there, you can designate Olympus all kinds of ways that you can be a part of giving the gift that keeps on walking and standing with hope.com would you take a moment ago what to standing with hope.com and see how you can give they go walking and leaping and praising God. You can be a part of that@standingwithhope.com. While in the emergency room with my wife as she was struggling with the covet 19 fires herself and I looked at are you scared she said, but I've been through worse certainty of mankind's history with uncertain an article by Peter Rosenberger and then as her fever was approaching 103 she started singing in Christ place my trust, glory in the cross.

That's how she has anchored herself in the certainty of Christ through her medical journey that is included in the surgeries both of her legs were doctors and now the Cove in 19 some sconces uncertain herself. Christ is the only place we can run to serve to read this article and more a.net/stand with 888-589-8841 to circle back to Luther. The last call here what's going on you to recap your what I was able to glean he was his wife is not well herself and she's taking care of her sister, whose even less well. Luther himself is had bypass surgeries and other issues but this is this is all very very very dangerous. Both are dealing with in the stress of caregiving is not noted for being a help to people who are already in bad shape. So, given that where you start with the support he starkly both saw the doctor last week and evidently nothing much is happening where you start well if his wife for his wife is diabetic and she's take care of her sisters diabetic and blind and has other underlying health issues that the diabetes is something that that can be addressed not 100% but certainly addressed with proper eating. So if you're overweight, guess what you have to get underweight. You have to get that weight off of you and change your eating habits you can do that right now that is something that can be done right now. Their playthings go out online and you look for diabetic menus that you can eat, and you start changing the way you eat, you start exercising and you start taking care of your body physically and if your doctor is not giving you that kind of support get a different Dr. there plenty them out there that would be glad to help give you some guidance to towards crawling back to a healthier lifestyle, but it starts with watching what goes into your mouth.

Okay, the last thing you want to do is kill yourself with a knife and fork.

So you change the way you eat and you change it today, you're not, you can get here overnight enough to get out of this overnight but you could start drinking a whole lot more water and a whole lot less soda or sweet tea or fruit drinks. Whatever the have so much high sugar in it.

Okay you do that today doesn't cost a darn thing to do that second thing is it's time to sit down with the with a sustainable plan of care as best as possible that you may be able to do this for the next couple of months then you want to develop another one little go even further.

But right now you're in crisis but you get to a short-term path a medium-term path and a long-term path because the three of them are not in good shape and there shall be three funerals which order are they going to go. It is the question and depending on who goes first is going to create even more drama and more heartache and more suffering. So we has to be a sit down with an honest conversation. There's there's there's family counselors that can help with this. There social workers, a lot of your doctors can refer you to a social worker who could sit down with you and have a plan of care, particularly if if one or more of these individuals are on Medicare disability and so forth their resources out there that you can tap into, but you gotta raise your hand and say were going to do this will take charge this, you cannot leave things hanging there is no open end this level just wait and see.

No we don't fit doctors tell me that before and and and medical staff as well were going see us and how long can only was overweight three weeks okay on three weeks to give you call that every that's why I do, I'd never leave anything open-ended if we are latency 45 minutes or 45 days.

It doesn't matter that is waiting is an action step, but there is not an open into this okay this is unsustainable. So for those of you are in similar positions where you're in a situation where you don't know what else to do you good study deal with what you can control first.

You can control what goes in your body. Okay, you can control what goes in your mouth then you can control what you're physically doing exercising some type of physical activity you may have neuropathy you may have ISSUES get it. But what does it to me like she's in pain all the time, but she physically pushes herself to do something whether it's doing you know arm exercises or whatever else but you. You can't just sit around okay. We were going to work in the cancer cells into a grave.

She got a physically move one of things I did for example, you know what I mean.

I was getting. I was putting on some house. Every character goes with this we get, we gain weight. I mean, I get so big picture fell off the wall. I beat it ghetto. It happens I started doing martial arts and and started working myself in the shape I got rid of a sitting desk and I went to a standing desk. They say standing is the sitting is the new smoking.

I don't know if that's true, but that's what they say. All I do is I stand. I'm standing when I do this show. I stand when I do this I'm always moving around and I strive to stay active but but you, you've got to do something, you get everybody can do something and and it's important to take action with that, sit down, have a meeting if you don't know who to call. Start with your pastor and say look when you develop a plan to give the pastor looks clueless. Go to the next person. You keep going aggressively until you get a plan of care that is going to give you guys wisdom and leadership and guidance throughout this process and you stick to that and is never going to be one thing, there's no magic bullet for this is just hard work. But what your options are a funeral and even more suffering. So were going to have to roll up the sleeves little bit. I member the first time I stepped into a martial arts class was hard work.

I started putting down sodas and grabbing water.

It's it put down the Snickers bar and get an apple and I still have relapses for how love to get a candy bar will tell you when the last one I had was yesterday, but I but I have to push back and keep going to mean I'm not I'm not having a Nazi approach the same word that you can't do this at all, just asking you start making life choices that are little bit better.

Eventually you start making a sequence of because the alternative is death and suffering. That's where Luther and his family are right now so you got it. A family history of diabetes you get Parkinson's about you get triple bypass or that's involved, you got a lot of different things involved in their all in the 60s anybody here want to weigh in on how this is Lillian this is this is not going to indwell without some aggressive stance on this okay. Healthy caregivers make better caregivers. I've been saying this since I launched my show. I would say this is I wrote my book and we caregivers somehow think were just going to just white knuckle this thing until we get this love lawn to the grave, not realizing that we are in danger of the grave ourselves so we don't take this can action were in trouble that starts a lot of time but it always starts in the heart and you you you can't just start try to do one thing without realizing your whole mind and heart got to change got thing on the podcast Glenn see it says it can we change the way we think. Yet we can't, we must is the most recent episode. Got to hope the character that comes free. Just listen to it is only 10 minutes of changing the way we think about the sort of things that we get aggressive about it. Be good stewards of our bodies of the situation were in and as we go through this, then the Scriptures the songs that I put out there for you mean something you are my hiding place. You always fill my heart with songs of deliverance whenever I'm afraid I will trust in you.

And as we put down a soda and pickup of water.
